Microsoft details other 360 improvements, including hard drive game installs

Microsoft sure had itself a doozy of a press conference this year, but there's still more in store for Xbox 360 users than what was detailed during the keynote. First off, with the upcoming update, Microsoft will let users store and play back games from their hard drives. News: Apple settles Canadian iPhone trademark dispute
Apple has reached a settlement with Canadian telecom provider Comwave which gives Apple the legal right to use the trademark “iPhone” in Canada. Microsoft announces Lips karaoke game with motion-sensitive mics

We pretty much knew it was coming, but Microsoft just officially announced the Lips karaoke game official. Just like we'd heard, the singalong title will come with a motion-sensitive mic that lights up in time to your voice. The game interface is somewhat similar to Rock Band, where you have to hit various pitches accurately to rack up points -- but in addition to the game content, you'll be able to sing along to your own music off a Zune or iPod.

Microsoft brings Netflix streaming to the Xbox 360

After months of speculation and rumors, Microsoft just announced that it's partnering with Netflix to allow Xbox 360 owners to stream movies from their Netflix queues for no extra charge. Lucid Logix HYDRA tech brings together any GPUs for powerful matrimony

There's a lot of tech speak to cut through, but if Lucid Logix's claims are true, we might be looking at a revolution in the high-end gaming segment. Lucid is building a new "real-time distributed processing engine" system on a chip called HYDRA, which can mix and match any GPU from any manufacturer and work with any chipset, and piles it all together for performance scaling that Lucid claims is "near-linear" or "above-linear." ASUS points finger at Intel over lack of Eee PC 901s in the UK

Wer sich schon Wochen vor dem offiziellen Start das iPhone 3G per Online-Bestellung sicherte, hatte das Nachsehen. Wurde als Wunschtermin für die Lieferung Freitag der 11. First Milestones for the iPhone 3G
The second iPhone model achieved 2 milestones within 72 hours following its official launch. Apple announced to have sold one million iPhone 3G in First week-end. Sales were collected from the 21 countries where the iPhone is already available (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US), and France will join the pool on July 17th.
During the same period of time, Apple announced that iPhone and iPod Touch owners (using the Firmware 2.0) have downloaded more than 10 million applications from the new dedicated App Store, while the offer is now over 800 applications and among them 200 as freeware.

You hear of this new iPhone 3G thing? Doing pretty well, or so we hear. Apple says they sold one million of 'em this weekend worldwide, compared to the 74 days it took them to hit one million with the last generation. So far the little bugger has invaded 21 countries, with France next on its hit list on July 17. Oh, and that App Store isn't doing too bad for itself either, with 10 million downloads so far to iPhone 3Gs, updated iPhones and iPod touches. Apple sells 1 million iPhones, 10m app downloads
Apple confounded most estimates on first weekend iPhone 3G sales, delivering a record one million units sold by Sunday night. The company also revealed ten million applications to have now been downloaded from the App Store.
Only RBC Capital Market’s Mike Abramsky had anticipated global iPhone sales on the launch weekend would reach one million, while Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster had anticipated less than half this mark, 425,000 unit sales.
The news is certain to please investors, and provides slight justification in terms of the activation problems which plagued most customers in the US and the UK on launch day Friday 11 July.

PC World says iPhone king of Battery life
PC World has put together a graph (in color!) depicting the average battery life of some common 3G smartphones. We guess that Apple's 3G chip isn't so horible after all because iPhone came up on top. Konzernumbau belastet Philips im zweiten Quartal

iPhone 3G Display: Less Blue Therefore More Yellow
Several readers contacted us about the so called yellowish display of the new iPhone 3G as they could read about it on the web. Hereafter is a capture showing how less bluish is the new iPhone 3G display: iPhone 1G on the left and iPhone 3G on the right:
So, if you play with the brightness you will see the difference, but the new display is rather more neutral color-wise than the original iPhone which was offering a blue-rich display.
The display settings of the new iPhone 3G is very similar to the one of the first production batch of iPhone 1G dedicated to the US market. The blue-rich rendering appeared wit the iPhone 1G dedicated to the EU market. So it is NOT a display problem, rather a color calibration choice made by Apple.

Kurz nach der Vorstellung des iPhone auf der Macworld im Januar 2007 war Comwave bereits in die Verhandlungen mit Apple eingestiegen. I purchased an iPhone 3G last Friday, and I already had to reboot it 5 times over the week-end as it device does not support switching from horizontal to vertical display or the other way around. After rebooting it works fine till the next waking up from a sleep modeA topic about this issue is receiving numerous visits on Apple discussion forum. If it affects mostly iPhone 3G, the problem also impact iPhone v1.0 which have been updated with firmware 2.0. So, the accelerometer is might not be defective, but rather a bug in the iPhone OS Firmware 2.0.
In USA, Apple will exchange devices experiencing such issues, something easy when considering the number of opened Apple Store.

US-Apps auf deutschen iPods & iPhones
Wer mal einen Abstecher in den amerikanischen iTunes Store gemacht hat weiß, dass es dort teilweise andere iPhone-Programme als in den europäischen Stores gibt. Das Google Mobile App zum Beispiel: Per Fingertipp erhält man ein Suchfeld und nach Eingabe der ersten Buchstaben auch Suchvorschläge angezeigt. Das Google-Programm durchsucht sowohl das Internet wie auch das iPhone und lässt sich somit auch als Schnellstarter für Safari oder das Adressbuch verwenden (Screenshots und Video siehe unten).
Wer ein Konto im amerikanischen iTunes Store hat, kann Googles Suchapplikation dort "kaufen" (das Programm ist kostenlos) und heruntergeladen. Anschließend lässt es sich wie die über den deutschen App Store bezogenen Programme problemlos auf einem iPhone mit OS 2.0 installieren und dort benutzen.

GeForce GTX 280 mit sehr hohen Taktfrequenzen
Auch wenn Nvidias GeForce GTX 280 ohne Zweifel eine sehr schnelle und gar die schnellste Grafikkarte auf dem Markt ist, so ist der Vorsprung zur Radeon HD 4870 von ATi wahrscheinlich nicht so hoch, wie die Kalifornier es gerne hätten. Centrino 2 to Be Officially Launched Today
Intel will officially launch today its new mobile computer platform, Centrino 2. Among the new features, the important ones are:
- Support for DDR3, increasing memory bandwidth while lowering power consumption.
- Support 802.11n and Wi-Max (in option).
- New Penryn to be introduced with the Centrino 2, clocked at 2.4 and 2.8 GHz.
- Support of Displayport and HDMI.
However, only the Centrino 2 without the integrated graphic chipset X4500 HD will be available (so requiring a dedicated GPU from AMD/ATI or NVidia). So, if Apple could quickly offer a revision of the MacBook Pro based on the Centrino 2, one will have to wait further before seeing the MacBook adopting the Centrino 2 and its integrated chipset X4500 HD which is expected to offer performance levels in 2D and 3D equivalent to a dedicated entry-level GPU.

iPhone 3G lädt nicht mehr in allen Docks
Wir fragen gerade bei Apple nach, ob es weitere Informationen zu diesem Thema gibt. Jedenfalls lässt sich das iPhone 3G im Gegensatz zum Vorläufermodell nicht mehr in jedem Soundsystem mit iPod-Dock laden. Klappt es nicht - zum Beispiel im Altec Lansing iM600 oder in Boses SoundDock, so erhält man die Meldung: "Aufladen mit diesem Zubehör wird nicht unterstützt". Andere Systeme wie zum Beispiel das Alfie von Roth Audio funktionieren mit dem neuen iPhone ebenso wie mit dem alten: das Gerät wird geladen und kann als Audioquelle verwendet werden, allerdings wird um hässliche Störgeräusche zu vermeiden empfohlen den Flugmodus zu aktivieren.
