NVIDIA said to be dropping GeForce GTX 280 price in response to AMD

It only launched a few weeks ago, but it looks like NVIDA could already be set to cut the price of its top-end GeForce GTX 280 graphics card -- a move that would be prompted, as you might have guessed, by AMD's cheaper but powerful Radeon HD 4800 series. Scientists create sea-power generating 'Anaconda'

Scientists may have discovered a new way to combat the global energy crisis -- and they're calling it the "Anaconda" (we'll give you a moment to purge your mind of any J. Lo films). The system works by utilizing the power of the ocean and long, black rubber tubes (hence the name). The rubber "snakes" are laid just below the sea's surface where they're pounded by the ocean's waves. That movement creates "bulge waves" inside the water-filled tubes, which are then carried up through the devices to a turbine, which in turn sends the energy it produces to shore via cables. Adobe PDF ist ISO Standard
Vor etwa eineinhalb Jahren wurde Adobes Plan publik, die vollständige Spezifikation von PDF 1.7 (Portable Document Format) an die AIIM (Enterprise Content Management Association) zu übergeben, um sie von der International Organization for Standardization (ISO) veröffentlichen zu lassen. Die ISO hat das Portable Document Format nun in Version 1.7 als Standard anerkannt: In der Schrift "ISO 32000-1, Document management - Portable document format - Part 1: PDF 1.7" wird das Format detailliert beschrieben. Für Softwareentwickler dürfte es somit in Zukunft einfacher sein, Funktionen zum Erstellen und Betrachten von PDF-Dateien in eigene Produkte zu integrieren. Nanowire-based memory promises leap in storage capacity

Apple limits UK iPhones on unlock scourge
Up-and-coming gadget site, Electric Pig, claims the UK is the unlock capital of the iPhone world, saying Apple will limit supplies of the next-generation iPhone 3G as a result.
Citing insider sources, the report explains that fewer than 15 per cent of all the iPhones sold by O2 when it slashed prices on the 8GB model actually ended up in use on the carrier's network. The rest of them were unlocked for use on other UK networks, or were sold abroad.
That move likely reflects habit and custom among mobile users in the UK, who are now well-versed in switching networks to get the best deal. iPhone critics here have frequently slammed Apple's decision to offer the device through just one carrier.

Hitachi working on 5 TB hard drive, halfway to human brain capacity

If NVidia is mostly doing the design and outsourcing production, Intel does both. They recently entered into a open fight regarding the future of CPU and GPU. Apple rises as Windows market erodes
Windows usage could fall beneath 90 per cent by the end of 2008, while Apple's Mac OS X claims double-digit market share, Net Application's latest internet figures suggest.
Aggregating data collected from approximately 160 million website visitors every month, the company charts things like browser usage online, as well as operating system statistics.

Google introduces Google Talk for iPhone
Google has introduced Google Talk for the iPhone, a web-based version of the service that's compatible with existing iPhones, and will also work with the iPhone 3G, and, naturally, the iPod touch.

T-Mobile verlangt Gebühr für Upgrade auf iPhone 3G
Wie angekündigt wird T-Mobile deutschen iPhone-Besitzern vor Ablauf der Vertragslaufzeit eine Upgrade-Option auf die UMTS-Variante des Apple-Handys anbieten. Erst vor kurzem stellten die Entwickler von Mozilla mit ihrem Firefox-3-Download-Day einen neuen Rekord für das Herunterladen einer Software binnen 24 Stunden auf. Um die 8 Millionen Kopien gingen an einem Tag über die Server an den Nutzer. Viele Anwender von Firefox 2.0 dürften mittlerweile die neueste Version auf ihrem System verwenden. Nvidia senkt Prognose für sein zweites Quartal

Extravagant und ohne Strom: Das iPod-Grammophon
Etwas schräg und mit einem Preisetikett von 500 Dollar auch nicht gerade ein Schnäppchen kommt uns das vom US-Blog TUAW ausgegrabene iPod-Grammophon trotzdem als willkommene Abwechslung in einem derzeit leicht iPhone-übersättigten Internet.
Das Gerät ist komplett aus Keramik gegossen und verstärkt den Klang der in eine Halterung eingelegten Ohrhörer alleine über den schneckenförmigen Trichter. Die dabei erzielte Lautstärke soll sich im Bereich eines Notebooklautsprechers bewegen und der warme Klang eignet sich laut der Produktbeschreibung vor allem für ruhigere Stücke, weniger für basslastigen Sound.

According to Steve Ballmer, this system will remain closer to Vista than Vista was to XP. However, there should be a radically change in its programming; certainly this is what customers hoped for with the current version.
By that time, Apple should have already released Snow Leopard and should be working with ongoing improvements of its OS; based on the sound foundations of the OS this should bring a batch of innovations on the side of the user interface.

No sooner did we find that the Netflix Player would be streaming content from other players in the industry later this year than Roku opens up the source code vault. Overheating, slow market to affect Nvidia Q2 earnings

25th Apple Expo Paris Programme released, no Apple
Apple Expo Paris has a 25 year history as Apple's number one expo outside of the US. It is actually older than the Macintosh and started in 1983. September 17-20th 2008 will be the 25th year in a row that it has been a meeting place for Apple technologies and the people who love them.
Unfortunately, this year, Apple won't be attending.
That doesn't mean they are closing up shop. Apple Expo this year has a huge list of attendees including Adobe, Microsoft, etc. and quite an interesting programme.

NVIDIA says "significant quantities" of laptop GPUs are defective, stock tumbles
Filed under: LaptopsIf you're the type to watch the late stock tickers, you might have noticed that NVIDIA's stock just took a pretty big hit, down 24 percent to $13.56 -- that's because the company just informed investors that "significant quantities" of previous-generation graphics chips have been failing at "higher than normal rates," and that it's lowering its Q2 estimates due to pricing pressure. NVIDIA will be taking a $150M to $250M charge against earnings next quarter to cover the cost of repairing and replacing the affected chips, but didn't specifically announce what products were defective, just that they include GPUs and "media and communications processors." Roku's Netflix Player to stream content from other "big name" providers

Roku's Netflix Player got off to a hot start after launching just over a month ago, and apparently its creator has big plans for the plainly designed $99 box. According to a recent report over on Forbes, Tim Twerdahl, Roku's vice president of consumer products, has affirmed that a routine software update would be hitting later this year to enable content to be fetched and streamed from other "big name" providers. Mr. Asahi robot bartender makes its public debut

Asahi Beer has experimented with robot bartenders in the past, but it looks to have really outdone itself with its new Mr. Asahi bot, which just made its public debut at Selfridges in the UK.
