Olympus expands its point-and-shoot offerings with Stylus VH-410 and VH-515
Olympus has taken the wraps off of two new point-and-shoots, the compact Stylus VH-410 and the "high-performance" Stylus VH-515. The 410 features a 16-megapixel CCD sensor, a touchscreen and 5x optical zoom. It can shoot movies in 1280 x 720, has Dual IS image stabilization and supports Eye-Fi wireless SD cards. It's set to hit the market mid-October. Die Krux mit den Zukunftsvisionen: Wer erinnert sich nicht an all die ambitionierten Vorhersagen diverser Sci-Fi-Autoren und selbsternannter Zukunftsforscher. In der Realität des frühen 21. Facebook Messages gets retooled layout, improved search
It looks like those who rely more on Facebook Messages than email these days will have a bit of adjusting to do. The company has just announced a new look for that key component of the social network, one that now sports a side-by-side layout and support for multiple inline images -- not to mention emoticons. HP exceeds Q3 expectations: rakes $29.7 billion in revenue, still posts a loss
To say that HP is in a bit of a transitional period would probably be an understatement. As expected, the $8 billion hit it took over the EDS purchase severely impacted its bottom line. While revenue was down year-over-year to $29.7 billion, that five percent drop equated to a 568 percent decline in income as the company posted a loss of $8.9 billion. If not for the combined $10.8 billion in charges it was forced to absorb this quarter, the company's net-income would have stood at $2 billion -- which would have been a significant improvement over Q2's $1.6 billion

HTC Arrive makes its exit, leaves Sprint with a Windows Phone-shaped hole
Call it the end to a brief chapter in the Windows Phone saga. While there had been murmurs that the HTC Arrive was on its way out soon, any doubt has been removed now that the smartphone has vanished from Sprint's website and is likely on the endangered list at retail stores. The QWERTY slider's retirement leaves Sprint without any sort of Windows Phone in its roster, cutting the number of major US carriers backing Microsoft's platform down to three. PayPal expands presence in US retail stores with new Discover partnership
PayPal already has a partnership with MasterCard in place that lets you use its debit cards in stores, but the company has now expanded that retail presence even further with a new deal it's struck with Discover. Starting sometime next year, that arrangement will let PayPal customers use their charge cards at any of the 7 million retail locations that accept Discover cards, with funds drawn directly from their PayPal account. What's more, PayPal says that retailers won't have to make any hardware or software upgrades to accept the PayPal payments, noting that they'll simply have to let customers know of the new option with in-store signage. AT&T suspends 2G in Oakland after cell towers step on police frequencies
An $18 million dollar radio system purchased by the Oakland Police Department has been giving static instead of 10-30s in progress, and the interfering party has now been collared -- AT&T. Sony to bring Sound Forge Pro to Mac
Following a number of teases and hints, Sony has confirmed that it will soon release its Sound Forge Pro audio editing software on the Mac. A video posted by Sony on YouTube under the name "FinallyOnMac" touts the program, which has won a wide following in its Windows version. Adobe Connect Mobile 2.0 improves controls, sharing
Adobe has launched Connect Mobile 2.0, an update of the iOS and Android clients for users of the company's Connect conferencing service. Apple removes 'Genius' ad series from its website, YouTube
After pulling the ads from television, Apple has now removed the "Genius" series of three ads that aired during the Olympics from its website and YouTube channel, apparently considering them a failed experiment. The ads, which featured an Apple Genius (as seen in the retail stores) helping customers more fully utilize their Macs, drew criticism from some quarters.

Apple already preparing OS X 10.8.2 for developer testing
Apple is already notifying participants in the AppleSeed distribution program that OS X 10.8.2 is in the works, according to 9to5Mac. AppleSeed and Mac Developer builds of releases tend to coincide, which should mean that developers will soon be able to test the update. By extension that may imply that v10.8.1 is almost finished, despite a second beta having just been seeded on Friday.

Toshiba / Samsung joint venture hit with lawsuit by LG over DVD+RW/RAM patents
LG Electronics has found itself at the center of quite a few patent lawsuits in recent years (both as a plaintiff and defendant), and it's now kicked yet another one off. As Bloomberg reports, LG has today filed suit against Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology, alleging that the Toshiba / Samsung joint venture violated a number of patents related to DVD+RW and DVD-RAM technology. In the complaint, LG further alleges that TSST is knowingly infringing on the patents as they were previously licensed to Toshiba itself (and TSST as an affiliate company) as part of a deal that expired in 2010. Sennheiser boasts anti-counterfeit efforts, unveils new authentication technologies
You know Sennheiser's pissed when it holds a press conference just to talk about its anti-counterfeit efforts. In Guangzhou yesterday, the German audio company brought along two executives to debut its new authentication technologies on its retail packaging: a shiny Tesa PrioSpot authenticity label plus a "fool-proof" online look-up system. Photo allegedly shows complete sync cable for new iPhone
A Chinese accessory vendor, Veister, is circulating a photo it says shows a next-generation iPhone sync cable. The accessory is similar to Apple's current cables, but with a notably smaller head where it connects to an iOS device. The head is at least roughly consistent with earlier leaks regarding Apple's new dock connector format, which is believed to be shrinking from 30 pins down to about 8 or 9.

Neues iPhone: Sync-Kabel mit neuem 8-Pin-Stecker

This is a post that has been a long time in coming. Quite a few months ago, two manufacturers sent me keyboard controllers that are compatible with iOS devices, Macs and PCs, but it's taken me until now to get these two devices tested. The Line 6 Mobile Keys 49 (US$199.99 MSRP) and Samson Carbon 49 (US$89.99) are both 49-key keyboard controllers that are useful with music apps like Garage Band.

Report: 27-inch iMac in short supply from resellers
Retailers are reporting shortages of stock on 27-inch iMac models ahead of a rumored mid-September press event supposedly revolving around next iPhone model. Briefly: Google Saves, ooVoo multiscreen, Now TV Xbox
Google has added a function that saves settings for its search engine. Preferences set for Google Search will be saved to the Google account, which in turn will automatically configure search on other browsers and web-enabled devices using the same account. Separate options for desktop and mobile search will allow for different configurations for each, all of which can be adjusted by selecting the cog symbol at the top of search results pages after logging in.

Mehr GTA 5 Screenshots, aber immer noch kein Launch-Datum
Tja, wann kommt wohl GTA 5? Heute gab es frische Screenshots, die diesmal unter dem Titel "Leisure" liefen, vor zwei Tagen schonmal ein paar unter dem Titel "Transport". Daraus können wir uns jetzt zusammenreimen, dass man im neuen GTA wohl Düsenjäger, Fahrrad, Hangglider, Motocrossmaschine und Sportwagen als Fortbewegungsmittel hat und zwischendurch zur Entspannung auch mal Tennis spielen darf. Den ersten Trailer gabs schon letzten November, wird dann doch eigentlich langsam Zeit, wenn Rockstar Games das Weihnachtsgeschäft nicht verpassen wollen.

Checkout 3.5 adds Automatic Printing, new report types
Acclivity NYC has launched a new version of Checkout, its Mac point-of-sale software. The v3.5 update introduces the concept of Automatic Printing, which can print receipts and invoices without a print dialog; it will in fact automatically detect receipt printers, and open any cash drawers during transactions. The feature adds store logos to receipts, and prints two receipt copies for credit card payments.

iOS Kurztipp: Mehr E-Mails gleichzeitig in der Mail-App darstellen
Im Vergleich zur Konkurrenz ist der 3,5-Zoll-Touchscreen der bisherigen iPhone-Generationen eher sagen wir handlich. Dementsprechend effizient sollte die verfügbare Bildschirmfläche auch genutzt werden, besonders wenn man mehrere E-Mail-Postfächer sein Eigen nennt und die Zahl der täglichen E-Mails eine kritische Masse erreicht. Passend dazu ein kleiner Tipp für die Mail-App von iOS.
Standardmäßig stellt die Mail-App in der Listenansicht zwei Zeilen des E-Mail-Inhaltes als Vorschau dar. Dementsprechend beschränkt sich die Zahl der standardmäßig gleichzeitig dargestellten E-Mails auf maximal vier beziehungsweise fünf E-Mails je nachdem ob das Suchfeld dargestellt wird oder nicht.

Archos readying 9.7- and 8-inch versions of its 101 XS tablet

China Telecom subscribers rise on iPhone 4S sales
China Telecom added 8.35 million subscribers during its second quarter, something attributed to launching the iPhone 4S in March, Bloomberg reports. Net income dropped 10 percent year-over-year from 5.05 billion yuan to 4.55 billion yuan, or $716 million. The figure did however exceed a 4.4 billion yuan median between seven analysts; Telecom says the iPhone should improve long-term growth while putting "short-term pressure" on profit margins, since it is paying high subsidies for each iPhone upfront instead of over the course of a contract.

iStopMotion 3 for Mac released, can now use iPhone or iPad as remote camera
Our buddies at Boinx have just announced the availability in the Mac App Store of iStopMotion 3 for Mac. The new release of the stop motion animation app comes with a drastically reduced price point as well -- iStopMotion 3 will be available for a limited time for US$29.99, with a regular price of $49.99. That's down from the $499.99 price tag on iStopMotion 2 Pro.
That lower price doesn't mean that iStopMotion 3 has fewer features; in fact it actually has all of the capabilities of the previous version plus a bunch of new ones. The app has a new look and support for Retina displays, integration with Final Cut Pro X, and is compatible with OS X Mountain Lion.

AT&T responds to FaceTime criticism, says you should be happy just to have apps at all
In a move that will surprise no one, AT&T released a statement regarding FaceTime on its cellular network. Apple announced FaceTime over cellular at WWDC, but AT&T this month was quick to point out that only its Mobile Share customers will be able to use Apple's video chat tool. There appears to be no restrictions on Skype, Google+, ooVoo, Yahoo Messenger, IM+, Fring, etc. Why? Because none of those apps are pre-installed on your iPhone, whereas FaceTime is.

Fair Labor Association reports on Apple, Foxconn progress
The Fair Labor Association, a "collaborative effort of universities, civil society organizations and socially responsible companies dedicated to protecting workers' rights around the world," has been working with Apple on audits and recommendations to keep workers at supplier Foxconn's plants safe and happy. The FLA issued a report yesterday showing significant progress towards creating a better working environment for Foxconn employees.
Apple joined the FLA in January of 2012 after reports of hostile working conditions and worker suicides at Foxconn plants. The findings published in the FLA report show that all 195 actions that were due during April and May were completed. Fox

Facebook is adding a new tagging feature to its Open Graph that'll make it easy for Facebook users to tag their friends in any Facebook connected app. Called Mention Tagging, the new feature will scan text that is being typed into an app and look for phrases that mention the name of a user's Facebook friend.
Facebook describes how this feature could be used in an app like foursquare. Instead of directly tagging friends when they check-in, users will be able to enter the names of their friends in natural language. Needham raises AAPL target from $620 to $750
Analyst Charlie Wolf at Needham & Company has substantially raised his company's target price for AAPL stock, going from $620 to $750 in the wake of Apple's continuing price rise. AT&T attempts to defend FaceTime 3G restrictions
AT&T has posted an official response to complaints about the carrier's new FaceTime policy, which restricts 3G use of the app to people with a Mobile Share plan. Wi-Fi use is still unhindered. Rare iPhone prototype lands on eBay
Spotted on eBay by 9to5Mac is a rare iPhone 4 prototype that's running Apple's Switchboard testing software. The device looks just like an iPhone 4 with a few modifications. Noticeably absent are the two screws at the bottom of the device, the +/- on the volume buttons and the Apple logo. There's also a screw on the side by the SIM tray that holds the back onto the device.

Sky's Now TV service hits Xbox, beckons you forth with 30 day free trial
After launching it on the PC, Mac, Android and iOS, Sky's adding another big platform to its Now TV service: Xbox. Gamers in the UK can now stream content at 720i, including the service's 11 movie channels. Those with a Kinect lying around can also use the peripheral to navigate around the offering. Interested parties can take advantage of a 30-day trial for free, after which they'll have to plunk down £15 a month for access to Sky Movies Pass titles from studios like Disney, Fox, Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros. and Universal. Daily iPad App: Pocket Yoga channels your inner yogi
When I was living in Arizona a few years ago, I lived within walking distance of a yoga school. For a few months, I attended class a couple times a week and loved it. Since then, I've wanted to get back into yoga, but cost and scheduling prohibited it.
The solution comes in the form of Pocket Yoga, which gives you a good, basic yoga workout on an iOS device. While you can use it on the iPhone, it's best suited to the iPad. You also can use the AirPlay support to transmit it to an Apple TV.

GoNote 10-inch hybrid netbook / tablet bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to UK classrooms next month
Ergo Electronics, the company behind the GoTab, is looking to help bring Android to UK classrooms in the form of the GoNote, a combo tablet / netbook running Ice Cream Sandwich. The device has a 10-inch 1024 x 600 display, a 1.2GHz ARM Rockchip RK2918, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, expandable via a MicroSD slot. Aimed at students, the GoNote also has four USB 2.0 ports and a VGA camera on-board. It'll be hitting in the UK in September for £150 ($236) in black and white options. Nikon Coolpix S800c: Android an Bord, ab nächsten Monat zu haben
Da ist sie die erste Android-Kamera von Nikon und nach den Specs könnte sie durchaus interessant sein. Nikons Coolpix S800c kostet 349,49 Dollar, kommt mit eingebautem GPS, einem zehnfach optischen Zoom, 16 Megapixel BSI CMOS-Sensor, 3,5-Zoll OLED WVGA-Touchscreen, 1080p-Videoaufnahme und Android 2.3. Curiosity rover flaunts its battle scar, wind sensor is bruised (but not broken)
You can't win 'em all. Such is the case with the Curiosity rover, anyway, as diagnostics have revealed that its wind sensors have sustained damage. This Tuesday has for some reason brought a bevy of new apps and updates to the App Store, so if you're looking for something to download (or wondering what that little red circled number on your App Store icon means), here's what's new right now.
Both Skype for iPhone and Skype for iPad have a big new update the improves performance, and adds a few features into the mix as well. You can now share photos directly with the app, for example, so that should save on MMS charges.

Warhammer Quest coming to the App Store next year
Rodeo Games, the team behind the popular Hunters strategy RPG series, has announced a new title called Warhammer Quest, which is of course set in the excellent Warhammer universe owned by Games Workshop. Unfortunately, despite there being a short teaser trailer for the upcoming game, we don't know much about it at all. Given Rodeo's past, we'd hope that it's a strategy RPG title that borrows a lot of elements from the great tabletop game. Report: 'Nintendo Power' to close its doors
As children of the 80s and 90s, we're getting a little misty-eyed writing this, but it seems that Nintendo Power, once the final word in the gaming magazine world, will be shutting its doors. That news comes from a source over at Ars Technica and seems pretty well backed up by a number of tweets from the magazine's staff discussing plans for the final issues of the magazine -- which, for some reason or other have since been pulled from the microblogging service.
