Source: OnLive undergoing acquisition in wake of dire financials, laying off 'at least 50 percent' of staff
After a lot of back and forth from the rumor mill and official OnLive channels, we now have what we believe to be a far clearer view of precisely what is happening right now at OnLive headquarters in Palo Alto. We've spoken with a (now former) employee of the gaming service who ran down today's events for us. According to the account, a meeting was held at OnLive's offices at 10AM this morning, wherein the company's CEO announced a massive staff layoff -- at least 50 percent of the staff, according to our source's numbers. Xiaomi Phones may enter Europe next year, because China ain't big enough
Here's a bit of good news to soak in over the weekend. After the unveiling of the Xiaomi Phone 2 (aka Mi2) in front of some 3,000 people yesterday, a reliable source informed us that the Chinese startup is already looking to bring its highly affordable phones to Europe next year. Alas, we couldn't get a more specific time frame, but assuming Xiaomi wants to deliver its first quad core device to the Europeans as well, it'd likely be within the first half of next year, well before the next August 16th announcement (the company's managed to stick to the

Apple HDTV: iTV-Fernseher angeblich bereits in Produktion

Facebook stock 'lockups' expire, stock falls to new low
Facebook's stock hit a record low Friday, sinking to just over half the IPO price, as insiders and the first investors in the company became eligible to unload the shares "locked up" by federal trading restrictions since the commencement of sales. Experts said in response to the drop that the value of the stock and company could plummet further if early purchasers and employees saturate the market with their shares of stock as more lockups expire before the end of the year.

OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion gripe list
To be sure, I think OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion is the best OS Apple has ever released. It feels like a completed version of what Mac OS X 10.7 Lion should have been. It's fast, it's clean, it melds some iOS concepts to OS X and, for the most part, it just works.
That being said, no OS is entirely perfect and there are some gripes my colleagues an I have about Mountain Lion. We've compiled them into the list below. Now, most of these gripes are minor and they'll probably be corrected in future updates like 10.8.1 -- at least, we hope so.

Motorola schedules press event for September 5th, dubs it the 'day's main event'
September 5th is going to be a pretty busy day, by the looks of it. While we'll likely get to see a few Windows Phone 8 devices in Nokia's Lumia lineup in the morning, Motorola has scheduled a Save the Date for the afternoon. News: AT&T: FaceTime over Cellular limited to Mobile Share plans

EPL Holdings sues Apple over playback tech in QuickTime, iPhone
According to a report on Patently Apple, Apple is facing yet another patent lawsuit. This latest suit was filed by EPL Holdings, LLC and accuses Apple of infringing on two patents governing audio and video playback.
EPL, formerly Enounce, claims company founder Donald J. Hejna Jr. met with Tony Fadell, the former senior Vice President of Apple's iPod division, in January, 2002. The two sides discussed EPL's playback technology, which lets users speed up and slow down tracks. Considering the iPad mini as a developer
I give up. An "iPad mini" seems to be a good possibility despite my protestations. Many Apple watchers expect to see a small iPad being announced sometime Fall-ish. Although I'm somewhat convinced that I've wandered into a figment of John Martellaro's imagination, it's worth thinking through the possibilities.

CFO Oppenheimer sees no limit to Apple sales in China
Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer on Thursday told analysts that the company sees no ceiling on growth in China, according to ISI Group analyst Brian Marshall, who participated in a conference call. Oppenheimer also remarked that he was "very excited" about the possibilities of Apple Store expansion in China, noting that Apple will be adding more outlets in Beijing, Shanghai, and several cities in which the company has yet to establish a foothold. With the exception of a shop in Hong Kong, all of Apple's current stores are split between Beijing and Shanghai.

HTC gets second case involving Apple moved to Delaware
Late last month, HTC score a small but important tactical win over Apple in a case brought by the iPad maker over infringement claims on six Apple patents when the judge there moved to separate the HTC case from a similar Motorola lawsuit and granted HTC's request to move the trial to Delaware. Today, a court in Eastern Virginia hearing a separate counterclaim from Apple regarding the FRAND status of two HTC patents was also moved to Delaware, resulting in a delay in both cases.

Samsung gets green-light for $822 million R&D HQ in Korea
Samsung has received permission from local authorities to erect a 330,000 square meter, 10-storey high research and development center in Umyeon-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul. The facility, which broke ground last week, is expected to cost around 1 trillion won ($822 million) and will house around 10,000 employees. OnLive reportedly shutting down, new company forming in its wake
Well, here's a bit of a shocker. After a strong showing at E3 and partnerships with companies like Ouya, gaming service OnLive is reportedly closing down, with an entire staff layoff resulting. Tabü tablet poüch harnesses the power of memory foam, umlauts
If you watched TUAW TV Live this last Wednesday, you'll know that I made jest of the name of what is actually a pretty cool product -- the Tabü tablet poüch -- because of the proliferation of umlauts on the product packaging. At least that's what I think the product is called; the Kickstarter project from whence it sprang seems to eliminate the umlauts. Wondering what Skype's Windows 8 interface might look like? Apple seeding OS X 10.8.1 to developers
Reports have emerged that Apple has indeed begun seeding a new build of OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1 to developers. Build 12B17 is still in beta stage, and it comes less than a week after Apple began seeding the initial build of 10.8.1. This new build has no known issues, and Apple is asking developers to focus on Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange in Mail, PAC proxies in Safari, SMB, USB, and issues related to Wi-Fi and audio when connected to an Apple Thunderbolt Display.

Amazon Instant Video app finally adds search function
On August 1, Amazon launched an iPad app, Amazon Instant Video, so Amazon Prime members could enjoy watching movies on their favorite tablet. There was just one glitch, however: there was no search function. Today's update fixes that.
Now you'll find a search icon in the lower right corner, which will open up a search field that will suggest titles as you type. You can sort results by Prime videos, or all videos. Results can't be sorted, but when you tap on an item you'll either be able to watch it (if you're a Prime member, more often than not) or save it to your Watchlist for videos unavailable

Analyst claims iPad mini, Apple TV set in full production
Both a mini iPad and an Apple TV set are in "full production," argues Jefferies analyst Peter Misek. The iPad claim is based on checks with Apple's main supplier, Foxconn, which allegedly indicate that the company is planning to build 25 million new iPads during the September quarter, and another 30 million in the December quarter. The manufacturer also saw an unusual 5 percent monthly bump in revenues during July, which Misek suggests could be linked to building the new tablet. Steve Jobs' stolen iPad used by street performer
To close out the work week, here is a story from the Mercury News about the late Steve Jobs's iPad and how it landed in the hands of a middle-aged performer known as Kenny the Clown.
As the story goes, professional clown Kenneth Khan was given an iPad by his friend Kariem McFarlin. He thought McFarlin had bought a new iPad and was giving him an older device. Like any good clown, Khan loaded the iPad with some music and used it in his Bay area performances. "I didn't notice anything special or anything like that," said Khan to the Mercury News.

Apple, Google, Samsung, others partnering on Kodak bid
Apple, Google, Samsung, LG, and an assortment of other firms are bidding as a group on Kodak's digital imaging patents, the Wall Street Journal reports. Sources for the paper say that talks and even the group's composition are fluid. While Apple has often been in conflict with Google and Samsung, and is a rival to LG, the strategy could keep the patents out of any one party's hands, preventing some potential lawsuits. At the same time, the Journal suggests that the companies could potentially run afoul of US antitrust laws.

Earlier this week, The Wall Street Journal leaked information about upcoming changes to the Apple TV. There's a big security story blowing through the leaves today, and it affects your iPhone. Uncovered by iPhone hacker Pod2G, the issue involves SMS spoofing and shows up in every version of iOS for the iPhone -- and it's in the current beta of iOS 6.

Sky Motion for iOS lets you know what weather is coming on a very local basis
So many weather apps, so many to answer, "Will it rain/snow/flood/today?"
Sky Motion has an interesting approach, with a very localized view and a forecast that only looks forward two hours.
The free iOS app updates your personal forecast every 5 minutes, and claims a very high resolution grid (1x1 km) for the best information. It can detect rain, snow, freezing rain, ice pellets and hail, and their forecast technology works in both the US and Canada.

Judge blocks Samsung motion on Apple evidence spoilation
Late on Thursday, a magistrate in the Apple v. Samsung trial, Judge Paul Grewal, turned down a Samsung motion asking that the jury be told Apple may have destroyed email relevant to the case. In his ruling, Grewal cites the timing of Samsung's request as a major issue. "There is nothing at all unfair about denying relief to one party but not the other when the one but not the other springs into action long after any rational person would say it could have done so," the judge writes.

Security flaw found in iOS, allows spoofing of SMS messages
Security researcher Pod2g has discovered a flaw in the way iOS handles SMS messages that could conceivably allow for malicious texters to disguise messages as being from a known or trusted source, potentially getting users to reveal information they normally would not, or rack up inadvertent charges on their bill. Pod2g refers to the flaw as "severe" and plans on releasing a tool to allow iPhone 4 users to send messages in "raw" PDU format until the vulnerability is fixed.

New lawsuit says Apple violating media playback patents
A new lawsuit, filed through the US District Court for the Northern District of California, accuses Apple of using media patents in spite of negotiations for them breaking down. A company called EPL Holdings says that on January 28th, 2002, it met with Tony Fadell, Apple's senior VP for the iPod division, about technologies it had developed alongside another company, Enounce. On February 5th the parties met to talk licensing, and Apple's senior manager for iPods, Aram Lindahl, is said to have offered Enounce $50,000 for one of the patents.

Nein, Instagram wird weiter entwickelt, auch wenn Facebook es gekauft hat. Die neuste Version lässt einen jetzt nicht nur endlos durch die Bilder scrollen, sondern zeigt einem die eigenen auch noch auf einer Map an, damit man immer weiß wo man nun was eigentlich festhalten wollte. Wir alle kennen H.264, wenn auch nicht unbedingt unter diesem Namen. Die meisten der HTML5 fähigen Videos werden darüber ausgestrahlt, YouTube-Videos z.B. Die Moving Picture Experts Group aka MPEG hat jetzt endlich H.265 aka High Efficiency Video Coding vorgestellt und will die Kompression von H.265/AVC noch verdoppeln. Amazon recruits 5,000 UK corner stores for 'Collect+' delivery service
Convenience stores, cornershops, newsagents, call them what you will -- nearly 5,000 local businesses in the UK have now been signed up by Amazon to receive and look after its customers' precious packages. Apple files plans for Oregon data center
The Apple Oregon data center is moving closer to reality. Apple has filed formal plans with the city of Prineville, and it looks like Apple will build a 500,000-square-foot facility. It's likely the data center will serve the Apple app stores and iCloud.
The plan shows two buildings with more than 500,000 square feet of what are described as 'data halls,' The Bend Bulletin reported Wednesday. The plan doesn't say when Apple might start building.

Twitter's API v1.1 rules put user caps on third party clients, exert more control overall

US State Department cancels no-bid Kindle contract
Prior to payment and delivery, the US State Department has torpedoed its $16.5 million contract with Amazon, proposed in June, for Kindle e-book readers. The contract is headed to a normal Request for Information process, rather than the no-bid award that Amazon was initially selected to fulfill. The program was intended for use in overseas language programs, and any device chosen would have to support wireless connectivity, central management, text-to-speech, long battery life and a number of other requirements.

Samsung says Apple overestimates patent damages
Today in court Samsung entered its own dramatically lower estimate of the damages Apple would have suffered from Samsung's alleged infringement of the iPhone maker's design patents. The South Korean electronics maker said Apple made a number of faulty guesses in calculating its damage estimate, including its figure for Samsung's profit margin. As Reuters detailed today, Samsung's own figure puts Apple's potential damages at around one-fifth of Apple's $2.5 billion figure.

Sega Alliance launched, will provide marketing and production support for indies
Sega has announced a mobile initiative that it's calling the Sega Alliance, which seems like a publishing division of Sega Mobile.
Sega says the Alliance will "provide participating developers with comprehensive marketing and production support as well as creative consultation." In other words, this is Sega's version of Chillingo, where the company will find indie developers doing good work and back them up with production and creative support, as well as partnering in the revenues when the apps are released.

Motorola XT907 gets approved by the FCC with Verizon LTE on board
It's just another day in the life of the FCC, but it's a big deal to anyone looking forward to yet another Droid RAZR in Verizon's future. The XT907, a rumored midrange handset, just got pushed through the federal approval process today with Big Red's LTE bands, NFC and the standard CDMA / EVDO radios to boot.
