'Extreme' class solar flare heading toward Earth, hopefully bringing nothing but auroras
Yesterday, a solar flare set off from the sun, launching a coronal mass ejection (CME) heading toward Earth, and it's set to make an appearance in our fair skies this Saturday. While the wave of charged particles headed our way is much weaker than the most powerful solar flares (like the X28+ gust from 2003), it ranks in the extreme (X) class, and it's already caused a wave of UV radiation that interfered with radio signals, not to mention an uptake in solar protons swarming around Earth. Russian hacker circumvents iOS in-app purchases
This is why we can't have nice things. A Russian hacker who goes by ZonD80 has published a way to (using his servers) bybass the actual App Store's in-app purchasing servers and unlock content without having to pay. While slightly clever, this is bad for a few reasons.
First, you're stealing. That's bad enough, but should you need more it's important to note that you'll also be sending a Russian hacker info like the unique ID for your device. As much as you want those billion Smurfberries for free, we recommend you stay far away from this. Here's hoping Apple patches this quickly.

Merriam-Webster announces Dictionary API for developers, coming to a word game near you
Merriam-Webster just announced its new Dictionary API, which gives developers access to the full dictionary and thesaurus, along with more specialized content like medical, Spanish, ESL and student-targeted vocabulary lists. The API will let app makers integrate word definitions, etymologies, audio pronunciations and more. While this content will no doubt make it into a slew of educational apps, Merriam-Webster says it will also enhance word games, so maybe Scramble and Words with Friends will finally start

Apple backtracks, puts eligible products back on EPEAT list
Apple has reversed course on an earlier decision and put all qualifying products back on a list of products certified to the EPEAT environmental standard. The decision was announced today through an open letter by Bob Mansfield, Apple's soon-to-be-retired senior VP of hardware engineering. "Weíve recently heard from many loyal Apple customers who were disappointed to learn that we had removed our products from the EPEAT rating system. I recognize that this was a mistake. Starting today, all eligible Apple products are back on EPEAT," the message begins.

Make iOS app links open in Chrome
Google's Chrome browser for iOS has a lot of features to love, but unfortunately for most of us who use it, we still find that clicking a link in another app only opens that link in Safari. Google is hoping to rectify this issue by providing developers with sample code that checks whether or not Chrome is installed on an iOS device, and then adds an option to open links with it when it is installed.
The Verge notes that this is similar to adding an "open in Dropbox" option to a Word or PDF document in an app. Hopefully a lot of iOS devs

Peinlicher als ein ‘In-App-Klau’, geht’s kaum. Und trotzdem scheinen die ‘Cydia-Software-Perlen’, die Add-on-Downloads stehlen, weitreichend nachgefragt – auf YouTube, in Blogs und in den dazugehörigen Jailbreak-Verzeichnissen. Google starts shipping Nexus 7 pre-orders, writes a rhyme to celebrate

Roku 2, LT and new HD boxes upgraded for more languages, future remote apps
Over on the Roku blog the company just announced it's delivering a software 4.8 upgrade starting today. First up there's a few new features included right away like support for Spanish and German in the UI, performance optimizations and playback improvement for channels like MLB.tv and GBTV. Canadian Supreme Court rules no separate copyright fee for iTunes previews, game downloads
The Canadian Supreme court ruled on two copyright cases that affect music previews in iTunes and video game downloads. According to a report in Paid Content, the Court upheld the Copyright Board's decision that the 30- to 90-second audio previews in iTunes do not constitute a public performance and do not require a copyright payment to the music industry.
The Court also reversed a Copyright Board decision that a game download was a public performance of the music in the game and required a separate copyright payment. The Court chastised the music industry for trying to double-dip as game

Noise Industries has released a new package of plugins that allows users to create video scrapbooks by animating still images and adding transitions and backgrounds. Nattress Video Scrapbook includes six dynamic transitions, as well as a variety of motion effects, and support for Final Cut Pro, Motion, and After Effects. The software also includes support for creating stylized backgrounds for portrait images that don't fill an entire frame. Apple reverses course on EPEAT environmental standard, eligible products once again included
Apple has posted a letter from retiring senior VP of hardware engineering Bob Mansfield to its website, walking back the company's abandonment of the EPEAT certification for its eligible products. Per the letter:
"We've recently heard from many loyal Apple customers who were disappointed to learn that we had removed our products from the EPEAT rating system. I recognize that this was a mistake. Starting today, all eligible Apple products are back on EPEAT."

MacBook Pro Retina display ship times improve
That didn't take long! One day after the MacBook Pro with Retina display was released, shipping times jumped to 2-3 weeks, and then to 3-4 weeks. Apparently the initial demand for the product has been met or more of the luscious laptops are making their way out of factories, because ship times are beginning to improve.
In the U.S. online Apple Store, ship times are back down to the 2-3 week range; still annoying for those who want to get their new laptop now. The first markets that received the good news were those in the Asia-Pacific sector; now the improved estimates are visible in the Americas and many of the European stores.

Nokia Transport goes official: public transport departure times for over 100 cities (video)
Nokia's public transport update has now passed through beta testing and is available to download on your favorite Lumia handset now. The app refresh adds transit route options and departure times for over 100 cities and urban areas and estimated routes for another 450 places. Hacking technique allows free iOS in-app downloads
A Russian developer has discovered a way of getting in-app purchases from iOS apps for free, reports say. The hack can be performed without jailbreaking a device, and should moreover work on any iOS device running iOS 3.0 or later, even up to the beta of iOS 6. The technique involves installing a pair of certificates and changing DNS details under Wi-Fi settings. When making purchases from apps a pop-up from in-appstore.com should appear instead, which despite an unrelated message, allows people to skip paying.

New Food & Drink App Store category now live
Finding apps to help you cook and serve up drinks just got a lot easier thanks to Apple's new Food & Drink category. Announced last week by Apple, Food & Drink is now live in both the desktop version of iTunes and the iOS App Store on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Just like other categories, the new Food & Drink category tracks the top paid and free apps as well as new and hot apps. This new category may be a minor improvement for users, but it's a welcome change for developers who write apps that fall in this category. Previously, these apps were lumped into the much larger Lifestyle category.

Nexus 7's Smart Cover-like magnetic sensors
Google's Nexus 7 tablet appears to have a feature that isn't showing up in any of the official specs. Over on YouTube, user wwscoggin showed off an experiment in which he used a magnet to discover a sensor that puts the display to sleep. Does this sound familiar? Yes, it's a function that has been used in the last two generations of iPad to allow the Smart Cover to switch off the display when closed.

LCD makers settle price fixing lawsuit for $1.12 billion
Several LCD manufacturers are paying out a total of $1.12 billion to settle a class action lawsuit over price fixing, the Wall Street Journal reports. LG will lose the most in the arrangement, paying out $380 million. AU Optronics is on hook for $170 million, while Toshiba is due for $21 million. Several other companies settled earlier in the year, including Samsung, which gave up $240 million.

News: Hacker builds in-app purchase payment workaround
A hacker has discovered a method for obtaining in-app purchases without having to pay for them. Citing Russian blog i-ekb.ru, 9to5Mac reports that the method was published by a Russian developer, and works on all devices running iOS 3.0 or later, no jailbreak required. CyanogenMod developers slap Jelly Bean on an Optimus 4X HD, tease CM10 (video)

iPad: Starke Verkaufszahlen – bald mehr iPads als iPhones?

Neues iPhone: Chinesischer Schwarzmarkt läuft sich warm
Monate, bevor mit der Präsentation des neuen iPhone zu rechnen ist, läuft sich bereits der Schwarzmarkt in China warm: Diverse Anbieter nehmen Vorbestellungen für das “iPhone 5” entgegen. Einige lassen sich sogar schon vorab für ihre Bemühungen bezahlen.
Die Nachrichtenagentur Reuters berichtet von einigen Personen, die das Gerät bereits über die IT-Verkaufsplattform Taobao anbieten. Zum Teil verlangen sie eine Anzahlung in Höhe von 1000 Yuan – circa 130 Euro -, zum Teil den gesamten Kaufpreis, beispielsweise in Höhe von 6999 Yuan – circa 900 Euro. Is that tasty baked snack still too hot to eat? Omron's D6T contactless infrared thermal sensor should take the guesswork out of it and help to avoid future cases of burny-mouth. Hook it up to a phone, point it at food or drink, and it'll display heat levels on-screen. Aside from snack safety, the device is also intended as a general presence sensor. NVIDIA Developer Zone shut down, may have been hacked
Bad news from the land of Tegra. NVIDIA has shut down its Developer Zone forums after noticing what it calls "attacks on the site by unauthorized third parties." While the nature of the attacks isn't clear, what's troubling is that these attackers "may have gained access to hashed passwords." Nielsen Smartphonestatistik: Android und iOS legen zu, der Rest?

Es scheint immer weniger Platz zwischen Android und iOS zu geben. Jedenfalls in den USA wie die neue Smartphone-Statistik aus den USA des zweiten Quartals 2012 von Nielsen zeigt. Android führt mit 51,8%, Apple mit 34,3% wie schon im Quartal davor zweiter und beide haben auch noch ein paar Prozent zugelegt. In den letzten Monaten sieht es noch schlimmer aus, denn die Statistik über alle Neukäufer der letzten drei Monate zeigt Android bei 54,6% und iOS bei 36,3% und einen Smartphone-Anteil am Gesamtmarkt von zwei Dritteln. Jetzt bekommen wir mal ein fast fertiges iPhone 5 zu sehen, oder wie immer es heißen mag, wenn es dann mal Wirklichkeit wird. Das jedenfalls vermutet Kitguru.net, die ein Test-Sample nicht nur des Bodys, sondern mit Glass-Finish aufetrieben haben wollen. Etwas größerer Screen mit einem Hauch weniger Restfläche suggeriert das Modell neben dunkleren Rändern. Sonst scheint sich nach diesem Modell nicht viel geändert zu haben, was uns wundern würde.

In Japan hat man eine eigenwillige Idee. Das Auto oben, das eigentlich eher wie ein Sprössling einer futuristischen Kart-Bahn aussieht, soll man sich selber zusammen basteln. DIY GPS dog collar helps your pup fulfill its mobile computing potential
Yeah, you love your dog, but is he or she really pulling his or her weight? A new project from Adafruit brings an on-board computer to your roaming canine, tracking the distance to your and your pup's goal with a progress bar. The project is pretty simple, and Adafruit offers up most of the supplies, including the GPS and Atmega32u4 breakout boards -- though you'll have to procure your own fabric to make the big flower and some black nail polish to blot out the bright LEDs. Toshiba outs Tecra R940 and R950 for small business set, prices start at $600
Last month, Toshiba gave its Tecra line the Ivy Bridge treatment, outing the enterprise-focused R940 and R950 with fingerprint readers and the Smart Client Manager. Chinese sellers offering pre-orders of 'iPhone 5' on Taobao
Apple hasn't even announced the date for a press conference unveiling the "iPhone 5," but sellers on China's largest e-commerce platform Taobao are accepting preorders. The listings include composite mock-up pictures, rumored specifications, and fake technical illustrations of the phone. Orders are being accepted for a deposit of 1,000 yuan ($161) from some sellers, but at least one seller is asking for a full 8,600 ($1,349) yuan upfront.

Facebook Android app update requires Froyo, tweaks messaging and picture taking
Just an FYI, the folks over at Facebook have shoved another update to their app for Android out the door today. While version 1.9.7 won't add any new apps to your launcher, it does require some new permissions (phone status), require Android 2.2 and up, and offers some changes for the messaging and integrated camera experience. Nielsen: two-thirds of new mobile buyers get smartphones
Smartphones are now pretty clearly driving growth in the mobile phone market, according to new figures out from research group Nielsen. A post on the firm's blog claims that smartphones accounted for two out of three mobile purchases in the United States. Nielsen also found that the percentage of mobile subscribers owning smartphones has ticked up from previous estimates.

Apple updates iPhoto, fixes lingering Mobile Me issue
Users who downloaded their photos from Apple's now-closed MobileMe Gallery may have run into a modest bug that has now been corrected with the release of version 9.3.1, an update available from Software Update or from Apple's support webpage. The minor update, issued earlier today, fixes a problem during the migration of albums from the Gallery that caused some photos to be moved from their original events into a new event called "From MobileMe."

NBC releases Olympic apps for statistics, live streams
NBC and Adobe have unveiled apps for the network's coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The standard NBC Olympics app will give medal counts, schedules and other statistics on the games, while the NBC Olympics Live Extra app will offer live video streams to users of all 302 events across the 32 sports. The apps will be available in separate smartphone and tablet editions for both Android and iOS.

Samsung and Apple file pre-trial juror questionnaires
Late Wednesday afternoon, Apple and Samsung filed their prospective juror screening questions for their US District Court patent dispute scheduled for the end of this month. People selected from the jury pool to serve on the Apple and Samsung jury will have to answer 700 questions put forth by Samsung, and 49 by Apple, unless Judge Lucy Koh orders some narrowing. Samsung's questionnaire spans 40 pages, and Apple's covers six. The discrepancy in the size of the questionnaires may be an attempt by Samsung to bewilder potential jurors who lack strong technical abilities, or could be a simple atte

NPD: Nintendo 3DS sales hit 5 million in US, Xbox 360 still claims the console crown

PayPal kündigt diversen File-Hostern Partnerschaft
Seit US-Behörden im Januar Megaupload abschalteten und Monate später andere Großkaliber der File-Hosting-Anbieter ins Visier der Filmindustrie gerieten, haben es die verbliebenen Seiten schwer.
