Google+ expands custom URLs to 'thousands more' pages and profiles
If you're lacking the mental perspicacity to memorize that bizarre string that constitutes your Google+ profile (or business page) we've got some good news -- Google's continuing its roll-out of custom URLs to its most popular social network pages. RIM tries to patent system-generated blog entries, we quietly update our resumés
Research in Motion has applied to patent a system for automatically drafting a blog entry on your smartphone. In the examples, it would build out the bare-bones of an entry as soon as it hits a "trigger event," such as taking a picture at a pre-determined set of GPS co-ordinates. Apple files appeal over partial Kodak patent victory
Nearly three weeks after US Bankruptcy Court Judge Allan Gropper ruled that the company had no claim to two imaging patents in its struggle with Kodak, Apple has filed an appeal challenging the judge's finding. The two companies are locked in a dispute over the ownership of a total of 10 patents, with Apple seeking to block the auction of the two patents in particular.

Sources claim iPhone shipments could slip on supply issues
Shipments of the next-generation iPhone during the current quarter will likely fall under 15 million units, instead of hitting a 20 million unit figure previously forecast, claim supply chain sources contacted by DigiTimes. Part of the problem is said to be low yield rates for in-cell touchscreen panels. Earlier today LG Display announced that it's now mass-producing in-cell components; many of these could be headed in Apple's direction, given ties between the two companies.

Eye Trash: Replicating a commercial app in a few easy steps
Long-time Apple developer Circus Ponies recently announced a new application called iTrash ($4.95). The Mac app resolves the "issue" of the moving trash can, a "problem" that occurs when you have your Dock icons set to magnify as you run your mouse pointer over them. My first thought was "well, you can just turn off magnification for the Dock in System Preferences", followed by another thought -- "I bet I could replicate the functionality of the app fairly easily."
My goal? Replicate iTrash's functionality of creating a desktop-based, non-moving trash can that can be decorated with any number of other icons. Edifier announces Sound To Go PLUS for portable devices
Audio system manufacturer Edifier announced today the availability of its new Sound To Go PLUS portable audio system. The new micro speaker system is designed to accompany laptops, tablets, smartphones, and a number of other portable devices. Facebook launches promised overhaul of iOS app
Facebook has released a long-awaited overhaul of its iOS app, bringing the title up to v5.0. The social network says that the app should now launch twice as fast, and load the News Feed and notifications right away. Speed improvements extend to scrolling through the News Feed, which should now be smoother, and viewing photos, which should open instantly when tapped. Swiping downward closes them. A banner at the top of the interface meanwhile indicates when new stories are available, eliminating the need to use pull-to-refresh.

Ask iLounge: Removing songs from a manually managed iPod
Q: How do I remove music from my iPod, yet keep it on iTunes? My iPod capacity is full and I want to take some music off of it but keep it in my iTunes library. If I click on the ‘Music’ section underneath my iPod it shows the music on it. Facebook for iOS goes Obj-C native and speeds up, but that's about it
Millions of people check out Facebook on the go every day, and many choose to use the native Facebook apps rather than the mobile version of the website. Today the official Facebook iOS app was updated; the new version was engineered with Objective-C instead of HTML 5 at its core. The update, originally scheduled for July, is much faster and more responsive than the previous version.
Honestly, that's about all there is to say. Sure, there are a few tweaks like banners to indicate new comments or stories in your feed, but today's update was all about performance. For that, I am glad.

Amazon throwing press conference September 6th
We can't say we didn't see this coming, but we're certainly excited at the potential that Amazon's upcoming press event holds. DOJ accuses Apple, e-book publishers of 'unmistakable' harm

OSX/NetWeirdRC malware targets multiple platforms
A new piece of backdoor malware affecting OS X, Windows, Linux, and Solaris is in the wild, according to security firm Intego. Nicknamed OSX/NetWeirdRC, the code is said to be similar to Crisis in that it's a commercial remote access tool that was leaked to Virus Total. If a computer is infected, it can potentially allow an attacker to install new files, grab screenshots and system information, see which programs are running and steal encrypted passwords from apps like Firefox, Thunderbird, and Opera.

Apple releases OS X 10.8.1 to public
Apple has posted the finished version of OS X 10.8.1, its first update to Mountain Lion. The code is purely a maintenance release, solving a variety of bugs. First build of OS X 10.8.2 reaches developers
Apple is now seeding an initial beta OS X 10.8.2 to developers. The build is listed as 12C31a, and in combo form the download measures 641.83MB. Developers are being asked to test Messages, Facebook, Game Center, Safari, and Reminders, although Apple lists no known issues with the update so far.

The free Super PAC app has just been released for the iPhone and it gives you a look behind the curtain to see who is funding the political ads that are blanketing the airwaves and the internet, and gives you some places to check the 'facts' that the ads claim. In a way it is like the Shazam app that identifies a music track when you let your phone hear a sample of a song.

Netflix inks deal with Weinstein Co.-owned Radius-TWC, films coming to watch instantly next year

There's no visual overhaul as it just did yesterday with Facebook Messages, but Facebook has now announced an update for its iOS app that promises some fairly big improvements of its own. According to the company, the app was "rebuilt from the ground up," and is now twice as fast as the previous version. HP vermeldet fast 9 Milliarden US-Dollar Verlust

Synthetic cuts development staff, refocuses business
Even though Synthetic is still actively launching products, the makers of Hipstamatic have cut its core staff as it tries to refocus on the future.
The company has dropped to five employees, and those let go received full severance packages, The Next Web reports. It initially reported that Synthetic wasn't making enough money, though the company later contacted TNW to refute that. TNW also posted a tweet by developer Jonathan Wight, one of those let go, who said his team was "totally squandered where we are."

OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.1 update now available
Apple has released OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.1, and the update is now available in the Mac App Store under the Updates tab. A manual installer is also available for download.
In the support notes about the update, Apple recommends backing up your system before running the installer. A reboot is required in order to complete the update.
The update includes a number of fixes:

Apple Remote Desktop Admin update
With all of the fanfare of a mouse creeping into a dark, dank basement, Apple updated the Apple Remote Desktop Admin app to version 3.6.1 a few days ago.
Remote Desktop 3.6.1 requires either OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion. For Mountain Lion, the update is available via the Updates tab in the Mac App Store. For Lion, the update will be available in the Mac App Store if you purchased Apple Remote Desktop from the store originally, or as an automatic software update if purchased on disc. There's also a manual update available for direct download.

LG Display in-cell displays enter mass production
LG has used a press conference to tell the world that it is now producing mobile panels featuring in-cell touch screen display technology, reports WSJ. Although the company did not indicate the size of the mobile displays it is producing, one of the oft repeated rumors about the upcoming next-generation iPhone is that it will feature a 4-inch display using in-cell technology. LG Display is already acknowledged as one of Apple's display manufacturing partners, with the timing of the announcement in line with reports that Apple plans to announce the eagerly anticipated device on September 12.

Apple gegen Samsung: Die Slideshow von Apples Schlussplädoyer
Nach sehr intensiven Wochen vor Gericht liegt nun die Entscheidung in einem der größten und wohl auch wichtigsten Rechtsstreits der Tech-Geschichte in den Händen von neun Geschworenen. Chrome Browser für iOS bekommt sein erstes Update mit Sharing für Google+, Facebook und Twitter

Seit Juni gibt es Googles Chrome Browser nun auch für iPhone und iPad und jetzt hat er sein erstes Update bekommen. Das Hauptfeature des Updates ist Sharing von Webseiten mit Google +, Facebook und Twitter, aber auch diverse Bugfixes hat es gegeben, die unter anderem Spracherkennung, Synchronisation und das Auftreten von leeren Seiten im Inkognito-Modus betreffen. Auch wenn die iOS-Version noch nicht ganz auf der Höhe der Android-Version ist und immer noch etwas langsamer als Safari (was sich wahrscheinlich auch nicht ändern dürfte): Interessierte finden Googles schlanken Browser im App Store, mehr Infos zum Update hinter dem Quelle-Link.

Dell hofft nach schwachem Quartal auf Windows 8

FTC complaint: McDonalds website violates child privacy law
According to reports, 17 child advocacy groups are teamed up this week to file five separate Federal Trade Commission complaints against McDonalds, Subway, General Mills, Cartoon Network, and Nickelodeon, for collecting children's email addresses without parental consent. Cross-platform 'Crisis' malware infects Windows, OSX, VMWare
Researchers from Kapersky Lab have released a description of a new malware delivery platform capable of spreading itself and its payload to Windows, Max OS X, VMware virtual machines, and Windows Mobile devices. iPad thief: Find My iPad vigilante illegally trespassed
An alleged iPad thief is attempting to rely on a unique defense, claiming a victim illegally trespassed on his property after utilizing the Find My iPad security service. The iPad's rightful owner used GPS coordinates to locate the device on the property of Canberra, Australia resident Alden Harder, who has been ordered by the court to provide fingerprints. Extradition of Kim Dotcom halted until US produces evidence
The New Zealand high court has ruled that the the United States must hand over all evidence in its case against Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom before any extradition can take place. The decision shut down the US Department of Justice's appeal of a lower New Zealand's court decision earlier in the year blocking the extradition pending case information.

Xiaomi Phone 1S ships August 23rd with avalanche of backorders
You know you're doing well when even your warmed-up, older smartphone is triggering queues before it's on sale. Xiaomi has just promised that the Phone 1S will reach the market on August 23rd, but with 200,000 units to share -- a slight shortfall when there are 1.3 million reserved phones. Facebook purchase of Instagram cleared by FTC
In a 5-0 vote, The Federal Trade Commission has voted to close the investigation of Facebook's acquisition of Instagram. The FTC has chosen to do nothing to block or otherwise hinder the merger, but reserves the right to "take such further action as the public interest may require." Mark Zuckerberg claims that Instagram will still share content out to non-Facebook sites, and it would still be possible to add and share with friends who aren't connected even after the merger.

Chrome for iOS updated with new social and stability features
Google has posted an update for the iOS version of its browser Chrome, and the app now features the ability to share content via Google's own G+ network, Facebook or Twitter. The update also has a host of bug fixes per user feedback, according to the changelog, so it should be faster and work smoother.
Not quite as smooth as Mobile Safari just yet, unfortunately, as Apple has access to API calls that third-party developers still can't use. But if you're a big Chrome fan and would rather use that browser on your iOS device, it's good to know the app should run better than ever. The update is out now and of course Chrome is free to download.

Here's a surprise on the App Store this week -- Infinity Blade creators Chair Entertainment have suddenly released a politically-themed parody of their own game, called VOTE!!!. Final Kodak patent auction hearing scheduled for August 30
Eastman Kodak is scheduled to appear before federal bankruptcy Judge Allan Gropper on August 30. Kodak is in the middle of an digital imaging patent portfolio auction to attempt to raise billions of dollars to pay back the lenders that supported it through its Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The August 30 hearing date suggests that Kodak expects to have the auction process wrapped up by August 23, as according to judicial instruction, the company has to give at least seven days notice of an auction conclusion hearing.

Sound Forge Pro apparently coming to the Mac
A series of teaser videos have revealed that Sony's popular audio editing and production app, Sound Forge Pro, is finally making its way over to the Mac. There's unfortunately no details on a release date or any other release information, but a site called FinallyOnTheMac.com has been teasing a big Mac release very soon, and it's now been revealed that the release in question is Sound Forge Pro.
