Jelly Bean pre-release for Verizon Galaxy Nexus now available from Google
More timid users might want to sit this one out, but for everyone else, you'll be glad to know that a pre-release build of Android 4.1 is now available for installation on the Galaxy Nexus from Verizon. IBM to bring Watson to smartphones
IBM is looking to bring the technology that powers Watson to smartphones. The technology giant says that advances in both battery power and computing efficiency make it possible to bring a new version of the smart computer, dubbed Watson 2.0, to mobile handsets within the coming years. The new version will bring the voice recognition capabilities the system is already known for, but IBM is also looking to add more senses to the technology, allowing Watson to recognize images as well.

Sega brings Total War Battles back to the Mac
I really liked Sega's Total War Battles when it first arrived on iOS. Classic RTS developers Creative Assembly did a lot of good thinking about how to bring that complicated genre over to the iPad's touchscreen, and they did an excellent job, keeping things simple and accessible without compromising on depth or complexity. They've done so well that Sega is now bringing the game back to the desktop. Total War Battles Shogun is now available on Steam, for both the PC and the Mac.
There's no new content, as far as I can tell, but the game has been made completely compatible with Steam, including leaderboard and achievements for that platform.

Windows Phone 8 may land October 29th, just days after its desktop brother
Word on the street is that Windows Phone 8 will get its official launch on October 29th. When asked for confirmation, Microsoft issued a pretty standard "no comment," which leads us to believe there might actually be something to this rumor. GIMP now (finally) available as a native Mac app
This is something that's been a long time coming, and it's finally here. GIMP is an excellent Photoshop-esque open source photo editor. While it's been available on Mac for a long time, it has required the X11 Window environment, which itself needs a separate (and somewhat messy) installation. For a long time, the programmers working on GIMP have been promising to eventually take it native, but it hasn't happened until just recently. As of version 2.8.2, you can now simply go grab the GIMP .dmg file from the main website, and then install and run on your Mac as needed.

Logitech's UE Smart Radio, Boombox, and Mobile Boombox give you wireless audio on the go (hands-on)
In addition to producing a slew of new headphones, Logitech's latest collaboration with Ultimate Ears has produced a pair of Bluetooth speakers and a Smart Radio. The UE Smart Radio comes equipped with 802.11b/g WiFi on board to pull audio from directly from the likes of Spotify and Pandora or from local sources like Mac, PC, iOS or Android devices. A 2.4-inch LCD is on the front, along with the usual audio controls, plus there are six preset buttons that can be programmed to easily access playlists from myriad locales. It's also got a rechargeable battery, good for a claimed six hours of playback, and will set you back $180 when it goes on sale next month.

Bastion arriving on iOS tonight, Ace Attorney later on this fall
Two big titles are coming to iOS, one very soon and the other later on this year. First up, Bastion is an excellent action RPG title that originally arrived on Xbox Live a while back, and then migrated to PC and other platforms. Tonight, it finally arrives on iOS in the form of an iPad app.
The app has already appeared on the New Zealand App Store, and should be in the U.S. store soon for US$4.99. Bastion is a great game that features several control schemes and a gorgeous soundtrack. It shouldn't be missed.

You've seen the little brother, you've seen the dock, now behold the wonder that is the Samsung ATIV Smart PC. Gamera II hits new high with unofficial human-powered helicopter altitude record (video)
The University of Maryland team responsible for the Gamera II human-powered helicopter NAA flight time record may be on its way to bagging another one -- this time for altitude. With new freshman pilot Henry Enerson spinning the cranks, the gigantic four-rotor design ascended to eight feet, an unexpectedly lofty level, according to the team. Samsung ATIV Smart PC dock hands-on
And hey, what's a Windows 8 tablet without a docking station? Sure enough, Samsung was showing off a snazzy one tonight that turns your bright and beautiful ATIV Smart PC (which is a bit chunkier than its brother) into a notebook. The tablet slots into the top of the keyboard dock, with the Window 8 button obscured slightly by the top of the dock. The device does look a fair amount like a netbook when it's firmly nestled inside, but we have to say, the quality of the dock doesn't match the beauty of the tablet itself, the plastickey bottom clashing with the brush aluminum backing, particular when the lip just up slightly on the rear of the device. Flipboard adds dedicated video channels, decides reading isn't everything

Samsung says Jelly Bean update coming to Galaxy S III and Note 10.1 'very soon'
It's not as specific as we're guessing some would hope, but Samsung confirmed during its IFA 2012 keynote today that a Jelly Bean update is coming to both the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note 10.1 "very soon." That is at least a bit more encouraging than the "later this year" that we last heard for the Note 10.1. Chinese knock-off clone appears ahead of actual 'iPhone 5'
A Chinese counterfeiter has allegedly released an Android-based knock-off of the alleged "iPhone 5" design even before its inspiration has actually been released -- or even announced. Hands-On: Samsung Galaxy Note II (Video)
Samsung hat jede Menge vorzustellen auf der diesjährigen IFA, los gehts mit dem Galaxy Note II. Das kommt mit einem größeren 5,5-Zoll Display mit 1280 x 720 Pixeln im 16:9-Format, fühlt sich aber ähnlich an wie der Vorgänger aus dem letzten Jahr. Mac 101: Use Image Capture to clear off old iPhone pictures
Last year, Macworld posted an update of an old trick from blogger Colin Devroe, which allows you to use your Mac to selectively remove photos from an iPhone or iPad without having to sync the device or download images. To do this, just launch Image Capture.
Image Capture sees your iPhone or iPad as a camera, just like iPhoto does. Unlike iPhoto, though, it doesn't make you import the images to your hard drive before you can delete them. Sony unveils top of the line HX95 HDTV for Europe at IFA 2012
Sony's latest and greatest HDTV popped up in Japan earlier and now it has made its European debut as the HX95 series at IFA 2012. We're not seeing pricing information or a release date listed, but the benefit of a native English press release confirms it features full LED backlighting as well as the company's latest image processing technology. TiVo Stream iOS transcoder box due September 6th
Earlier this year, TiVo unveiled the TiVo Stream, a streaming media device that sends TiVo content to your iPad and iPhone. TiVo had a prototype of the device at CES 2012 and later confirmed the Stream would land this summer. At the tail-end of Sony's IFA 2012 presser, Kaz Hirai announced two updates to the VAIO line, one of which was the Tap 20. Sony's Xperia J arrives in style and on budget, we go hands-on
The Xperia T may have been Sony's flagship phone for this year's IFA, but the company's promised some style for a tighter budget in the form of the Xperia J -- what exactly "budget" means in this case, we're not exactly sure. The style thing we get, however -- the J's a pretty nice looking phone and clearly in the aesthetic vein of its Sony Xperia brethren. The 4-inch FWVGA display is nice and bright (we had to turn it down a bit, even with that white Sony tablecloth in the background) and fairly shiny, offset by a matte black back. At 9.2mm, Sony's talking up the handset's svelte design. And it's certainly slimmer than a lot of handset we've seen -- though not even closest to the slimmest. Apple, Qualcomm tried to purchase exclusive access to TSMC chip production
Bloomberg is reporting that both Apple and Qualcomm were turned down by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in attempts by the two companies to invest cash and gain exclusive access to smartphone chips.
Each company proposed investing more than US$1 billion in order to have TSMC set aside chip production capacity exclusively for them. Qualcomm and Apple are both trying to secure the chipmaking capacity to satisfy demand for smartphones, and either one of the deals would provide Apple with an alternative to Samsung -- which currently builds the primary silicon for both the iPhone and iPad. Sony debuts NFC and Bluetooth-enabled SRS-BTM8 wireless speaker
Smartphones aren't the only NFC-enabled devices that Sony announced at IFA today. While they didn't make it on stage, the company's also officially announced some new wireless speakers that boast NFC connectivity in addition to the usual Bluetooth -- an addition that lets you play music simply by tapping the speaker with your smartphone. As you can see, the speakers (known only as SRS-BTM8) are also available in your choice of black or white, and they're designed to be portable, boasting an integrated handle and space for 4AA batteries that promise 20 hours of playback time. Samsung injunction hearing set for December 6
Judge Lucy Koh released an updated schedule for the many post-trial filings that follow the verdict in the infringement case between Apple and Samsung. According to a report in AllThingsD, both Apple and Samsung will appear in court on September 20 to discuss the current ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Samsung is asking the court to lift the ban now that the jury decided that the device does not infringe on Apple's design patents. Apple adds online specialist chat to four countries
Apple unveiled a new online help feature that lets customers ask questions when they are shopping for an iPad or iPhone. According to Pocket-Lint, the service debuted on Wednesday in the UK, Germany, Spain and Brazil. Customers who have questions can click on the "Ask Now" button which is present on the iPhone and iPad product pages. The feature will connect you to an Apple specialist who will call you on the phone or chat online with you.

Archos sind bekannt für ihre günstigen Android-Tablets, jetzt wollen sie auch den Handheld-Spielkonsolenmarkt aufmischen. Das GamePad läuft mit Android 4.0 und kommt mit 1,5 GHz Quadcore-Mali CPU und einem 7-Zoll Touchscreen. Die physikalischen Buttons werden mit Archos-eigenen Mapping Tools so unterstützt, dass auch Android-Games mit ihnen gespielt werden können, die eigentlich nut virtuelle Kontrolle erlauben. Das GamePad hat WiFi, 8 GB internen Speicher und einen microSD-Slot für Karten bis zu 64 GB, dazu gibt es miniHDMI für die Ausgabe auf dem Fernseher. Puzzlejuice plans a Steam release, dev goes to work for thatgamecompany
Puzzlejuice is one of my favorite recent apps on the App Store, and it's about to get a lot more well, favorite-er. The app is getting a big update this Thursday taking it to version 1.5, and celebrating the fact that the game has been included in the PAX 10 at this weekend's big video game convention in Seattle. The new version will have a tougher difficulty level, a new powerup, and compatibility with Spanish, French, Italian and Dutch as well as the original English. And because of the update itself, the game will be on sale for just 99 cents -- a bargain at twice the price.

It looks like IFA will be where many Windows 8 devices shown back at Computex get (more) official. Exhibit A is ASUS, which today pulled the curtains on the Vivo Tab and the Vivo Tab RT, previously known as the ASUS Tablet 810 and the ASUS Tablet 600, respectively. There's still no pricing info available, but the company has filled in some of the remaining spec gaps. ASUS Designo MX279H and MX239H monitors are slim, inspired by sundials
We'd wager that "inspired by sundials" isn't a phrase you expected to hear at this year's IFA, but there it is, in the press release for a pair of new monitors from ASUS. The Designo MX279H and MX239H have edge-to-edge screens, largely free of worrisome bezels and slim profiles at 14.5- and 17.5 millimeters, respectively. ASUS is expanding its Zenbook lineup to include a larger 15-inch model. The company just announced the Zenbook U500, an Ultrabook packing some pretty robust internals. There's an Ivy Bridge Core i7 processor under the hood, along with an optional NVIDIA GT650M graphics chip and up to 512GB of storage. Werbemarkt Smartphones: Android im Aufwind, Apple im Sinkflug
Im mobilen Werbemarkt verliert Apple Marktanteile. Einer Erhebung zufolge büßt das Betriebssystem iOS im Vergleich zur Konkurrenz sechs Prozentpunkte ein. Android legt um knapp 30 Prozent zu. Bei genauerer Betrachtung ist diese Entwicklung jedoch für Apple nicht dramatisch.
Laut InMobi, nach eigenen Angaben das größte unabhängige mobile Werbenetzwerk der Welt, ist der mobile Werbemarkt in Deutschland im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um 76 Prozent gewachsen. 2,3 Milliarden Werbeeinblendungen (Ad Impressions) liefert InMobi pro Quartal aus.

Viel mehr ist nicht zu sehen, ausser dass es relativ dünn zu sein scheint und ein (HDMI?-) Dock hat. In ein paar Tagen wissen wir mehr.

Apple, Qualcomm said to have bid for TSMC chip access
Apple and Qualcomm each recently made investment bids in excess of $1 billion trying to get exclusive access to chip supplies from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, according to Bloomberg. AirPlay Direct: Verbindung angeblich bald ohne eigenes WLAN-Netzwerk

RealNetworks cost-cutting continues, 80 people laid off
Digital media streaming vanguard RealNetworks has commenced layoffs of seven percent of its workforce. An additional seven percent may follow in the coming months. The moves are part of interim CEO Rob Glaser's plan to reduce costs by $45 million as rapidly as possible. The first wave of employees involved in the layoffs were notified today, and the second batch have been notified that their current positions will not be renewed at the completion of work, and they may be reassigned elsewhere if financial conditions improve.

First Swedish Apple Stores identified in Stockholm, Malmö
A Swedish site, Allt om Mac, says it has identified where Apple plans to open its first retail outlets in the country. One is expected to debut September 15th in the Stockholm suburb of Täby, specifically in the Täby Centrum mall. The second is said to be coming to Malmö as a part of the Emporia mall, which is still under construction. The Apple Store there is forecast to open on October 26th; in both cases, the shops should measure somewhere around 600 to 650 square meters, or between 6,458 and 6,997 square feet.

Seed-sized A*STAR antenna could open the door to 20Gbps wireless
Antennas have often capped the potential speed of a wireless link -- the 450Mbps in modern 802.11n WiFi routers is directly linked to the use of a MIMO antenna array to catch signals more effectively, for example. That ceiling is about to get much higher, if A*STAR has anything to say about it. AMD's Steamroller CPU architecture detailed, due in 2013
Tuesday at the Hot Chips Symposium, AMD's Chief Technology Officer Mark Papermaster unveiled AMD's upcoming CPU core. The new core, called Steamroller, is the third generation of the chip manufacturer's Bulldozer architecture and uses a 28nm manufacturing process. Steamroller is the first major refresh of the architecture of the CPU, and according to the presentation increases performance by 15 percent with equivalent power and clock speed.

Gogo gains required license for in-flight Wi-Fi in Canada
In-flight Wi-Fi provider Gogo has been given approval to offer its service in Canada. Industry Canada has issued a subordinate license to the company, allowing it to serve flights using its air-to-ground radio-based technology. Both internal flights and those crossing the border into the US will get access.

Adobe pushes Illustrator updates to Creative Cloud users
Some early Illustrator CS7 features are being pushed out to CS6 users who subscribe to Creative Cloud, Adobe has announced. The main addition is the concept of a Package File, which lets designers gather all of the files needed for a given project into a single folder. Users can now also quickly unembed images, and more easily access and track info on artwork through the Links panel.

Apple versus Samsung sales injunction hearing: December 6
Judge Lucy Koh, overseer of the contentious Apple versus Samsung smartphone patent trial, has set a December 6 court date to make a judgement on Apple's request for a permanent injunction against Samsung's devices found to be infringing. Gazelle sees Samsung resales jump 50 percent post-verdict
Device resale site Gazelle is citing Apple's $1.05 billion patent suit victory over Samsung as a main driver behind an increase in Samsung phone resales. Final Draft Writer brings desktop scriptwriting app to iPad
Developer Final Draft has released Final Draft Writer, its first scriptwriting app for the iPad. The company has had another iPad app -- Final Draft Reader -- on sale for several months, but as its name implies the title can only display scripts, not edit them. Apple said to be working on LAN-free version of AirPlay
Apple is preparing to announce a version of AirPlay that doesn't require people to connect to a Wi-Fi network first, says the Telegraph. The technology is said to be tentatively named "AirPlay Direct," and on track to debut at a widely-anticipated press event on September 12th. CruxSKUNK Kickstarter project: iPad laptop case with a smelly name
CruxCase, a Utah-based company that has created a number of well-done iPad cases in the past, today announced the kickoff of a Kickstarter project to fund the development of a new aluminum keyboard case for iPad that essentially turns the tablet into a laptop. The CruxSKUNK project doesn't seem to need any help -- it already has 542 backers and is just shy of its US$90,000 funding goal -- except for that name.

Liftport turns to Kickstarter for space elevator experiment (video)
Space elevators are slowly making the transition from science fiction to science fact but we're not quite there yet. Reports dispute likelihood of NFC in next iPhone
A pair of reports suggest that, like last year, Apple still isn't prepared to put NFC (near-field communications) technology into the iPhone. AnandTech comments that because leaks have so far indicated the next iPhone will have a mostly metal back, an NFC reader is "unlikely" to make it into the next hardware. Apple gives employees 50 GB of iCloud storage
There's a new benefit to working for Apple -- according to a post by MacRumors blogger Jordan Golson, the company now gives all employees a free 50 GB upgrade to their iCloud storage.
Free online storage isn't anything new; the company used to give employees a free MobileMe subscription to use. Since the standard free iCloud account only provides about 5 GB of storage, the 50 GB of storage is a nice benefit worth $100 annually.
