Software-News: Pixelmator mit Retina-Support, Things mit Cloud-Lösung
Am heutigen Donnerstag gab es gleich drei große Neuigkeiten aus der Software-Welt von Mac und iOS. Neben neuen Versionen von Things und Pixelmator, die primär mit Anpassungen für OS X Mountain Lion punkten können, hat MacroMates den Quelltext des Text-Editors TextMate 2 auf GitHub veröffentlicht.

Microsoft reportedly settles on 'Windows 8' as replacement for 'Metro'
We've already heard that Microsoft was temporarily using "Windows 8-style UI" as a substitute for "Metro" now that the latter is on the outs, and it looks like may now have a permanent replacement. According to some unnamed sources speaking to ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft has decided to simply use "Windows 8" as a name for all things once known as Metro. That means "Metro-style applications" will now be known as "Windows 8 applications," and that the "Metro user interface" will now be the "Windows 8 user interface." Things 2.0 for Mac, iOS brings cloud-synced tasks
All three editions of task manager Things -- for the Mac, iPad, and iPhone -- have been updated to v2.0, says developer Cultured Code. At the core of the updates is support for the completed deployment of Things Cloud, a service which syncs tasks between devices using a secure SSL connection. The apps have also gained a new Daily Review list, which lets people see all of the tasks scheduled for the day and postpone them as needed.

Pulse News comes to your favorite web browser
There have been many times when I have wishes that my favorite news aggregators like Pulse news and Zite for iOS were available on my desktop or Mac laptop. Pulse News has answered my requests with a web version of the app that runs in any browser.
You can log into your Pulse News account and get all the sites and feeds you normally graze in the iOS app displayed right in Safari, Firefox, or Chrome. The Pulse developers also had some help and probably a wee bit of cash from Microsoft to make the app work nicely with Windows 8 touch capabilities. There's a nice Windows Explorer logo in the upper right part of your browser, no matter which browser you are running.

Apple reportedly price matching iPhone discounts from carriers and other retailers
According to a leaked screengrab hosted up at MacRumors, Apple retail shops now have the authority to price match carrier and rival retail discounts on iPhone. Warner Music Group says streaming services now account for 25 percent of digital revenue
We've been seeing plenty of evidence that streaming music services like Spotify, Pandora and Rdio are pulling in more folks than ever, and we now also have a good idea of how that growth is affecting the bottom lines of music labels. In its third quarter earnings report, Warner Music Group revealed that streaming services now account for a full 25 percent of the digital revenue for its recorded music group. Group threatens to block Google FTC payout over liability
A non-profit activist group, Consumer Watchdog, says it is planning to block Google's $22.5 million settlement with the FTC for violating the privacy of Safari users, according to a press release. The organization notes that the settlement must still be approved by a federal judge, and says it's upset that the ruling may not require Google to admit wrongdoing. The FTC has accused Google of knowingly circumventing Safari safeguards to generate advertising cookies, despite promises to the contrary.

Apple Stores matching iPhone discounts from retailers and carriers
If you're in the market for an iPhone right now, you can take advantage of a new price-matching deal that appears to be popping up at Apple retail stores nationwide according to MacRumors.
The program apparently matches price drops that have been announced by carriers -- for instance, Sprint's recent $149.99 price on the 16 GB iPhone 4S. Apple is officially showing pricing at $199/$299/$399 for the iPhone 4S, $99 for the iPhone 4, and free for the iPhone 3GS, and if you purchase an iPhone from the online Apple Store, you'll still pay that price.

Gartner reports Western Europe desktop shipments down, portable PCs up in Q2 2012
When it comes to technology and the end of a financial quarter, you can bet your wage there'll be an analyst report or two letting you what's what. And according to Gartner's latest estimates for Western Europe, PCs didn't fare too well in Q2 of this year, with a 2.4 percent decrease in shipments compared with the same period in 2011. Apple Stores start matching third-party iPhone discounts
Apple Stores have been given the go-ahead to pricematch iPhone discounts from carriers and third-party retailers, a MacRumors source says. A chart supplied by the source shows Apple willing to provide a $49.01 discount on an 8GB iPhone 4 from carriers, RadioShack or Best Buy, and an identical amount off of 16, 32, and 64GB versions of the iPhone 4S sold by Sprint. With Target, only the 16GB iPhone 4S can be pricematched.

DEVONtechnologies has launched Mountain Lion compatibility updates for both DEVONthink and DEVONnote. The v2.4 updates include full support for Notification Center and the new Sharing Services, allowing users to quickly share documents via iMessage, Mail, Twitter, Facebook, and Airdrop. Neue Benchmarks der GeForce GTX 660 Ti im Umlauf

Google to pay $22.5M in FTC case over Safari security
Google has agreed to a pay a $22.5 million penalty to settle its tracking dispute with the US Federal Trade Commission, according to a press release from the agency. The payout was previously rumored but has only now been confirmed. The penalty is said to be the largest ever for violation of an FTC order; as a condition of the settlement, Google must disable any tracking cookies it said it wouldn't install on customers' devices.

Apple-connected suppliers see record monthly sales jump
A group of Apple suppliers tracked by Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White saw preliminary July sales rise 14 percent month-over-month, notes AppleInsider. White comments that the the figure is the best monthly growth the group has ever seen, almost twice the average 8.5 percent increase witnessed during the last seven years. It's gone through a productive growing season, and now Monocle Society's new Mac task management app Pomodorable (US$4.99 introductory pricing) is ready for harvest. New photos show supposed back shielding for the next-generation iPhone's display, according to Nowhereelse.fr. The images first appeared at a Chinese-language website called iColorOS which has since gone offline. They mark the first time, though, that any shielding for the next iPhone has been leaked. Ist diese wirre Apple-Schraube echt oder ein Fake?
Gestern wurde auf Reddit ein Foto veröffentlicht, das eine Schraube mit asymmetrischem Profil auf dem Kopf zeigt. Angeblich stammt das Design von der Firma Apple, die ja bereits die proprietären Pentalob-Schrauben nutzt. Das völlig unregelmäßige Stahlenmuster ist allerdings um einiges abgefahrener als das blumenförmige Pentalob-System. iFixit-Mitgründer Kyle Wiens glaubt nicht, dass das Design echt ist: "Mein Bauchgefühl sagt mir, dass das nicht von Apple ist. Daily iPhone App: Wizorb turns Breakout into an RPG
Wizorb is a title that originally came out on Steam, but it just recently arrived on iOS, and it's a nice one to have in our gigantic library. The game is a mix of breakout and the old 8/16-bit RPGs, and the combat is essentially the old Breakout game. You use a paddle at the bottom of the screen to knock a ball up into bricks and enemies above.
Wizorb wisely never backs down from its 16-bit RPG style, so the graphics, the spells, and even the music are delightfully retro, and should be familiar to anyone who played similar RPGs during that era.
The Breakout side of the game is solid as well. It can be a little unclear just what you're earning as you collect potions, coins or gems

Laut Patentantrag wird das Smartphone neu befüllt, wenn es in der Docking-Station Strom zieht und sobald das Telefon dann klingelt, macht es kurz puff und der Lieblingsgeruch verteilt sich dort, wo immer man gerade steckt. RIM escapes $147.2 million hit as Mformation appeal ends in victory
RIM has successfully appealed its patent infringement verdict against Mformation, letting the company off the hook for $147.2 million in damages. It was originally ordered to pay the stack of cash after a jury found that it had violated a remote management patent, but a California judge has overturned the decision after reexamining the evidence. Mformation still has the scope to appeal and thereby cause a fresh trial to begin from scratch, which could be fun.

Auf dem Handy-Weltmarkt konnte Samsung vor Apple zuletzt an der Spitze davonziehen. In Apples amerikanischer Heimat lag Apple im letzten Quartal allerdings mit 31 Prozent Marktanteil deutlich vor Samsung.
Die Marktforscher der NPD Group haben die Werte zum US-Smartphone-Markt für das zweite Kalenderquartal 2012 ermittelt und miteinander verglichen. Apple liegt demnach mit besagten 31 Prozent an der Spitze, auf Platz zwei folgt der wichtigste Konkurrent Samsung mit 24 Prozent Marktanteil. Dahinter folgen recht weit abgeschlagen HTC mit 15, Motorola mit 12 und LG mit 6 Prozent Marktanteil.

Multi-platform business integration systems software maker Thursby has announced that its leading Mac-Windows integration software has been updated to work with Mountain Lion. Top gaming platform of all time? It might be iOS
Horace Dediu over at Asymco has put together some numbers on gaming users for the various consoles. According to his data, iOS is a contender not only for the top gaming platform currently, but for the top gaming platform of all time. Game Center currently claims about 130 million users, and Asymco says that if that number can represent all of iOS' gamers, then it easily beats out the Nintendo DS' 150 million unit sales. The PlayStation 2 is one of the biggest traditional consoles of all time, and even that console sold also about 150 million units.

Akamai: peak internet speeds jumped 25 percent year-to-year in Q1, Germany tops the mobile world

iOS developer toolchain will bid farewell to the iPhone 3G
Cocoanetics has noticed something that's become apparent to most iOS developers already: with the advent of iOS 6 in a few weeks, Apple is essentially phasing out support for iOS on the iPhone 3G. Apple is slowly deprecating frameworks that iPhone 3G-compatible apps require from Xcode and app libraries, and the upcoming version of Xcode (4.5, currently in development) specifically states that it does not support armv6 devices or anything below iOS 4.3.

Apple updates drivers for Samsung, HP, FujiXerox printers
On Wednesday, Apple updated printer and scanner drivers for OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and higher, including the new Mountain Lion release. Samsung drivers have been updated to version 2.5, while HP devices have been updated to v2.9. Also updated were various FujiXerox drivers, to version 2.2.1. Users of older Mac systems will find the relevant updates for their systems through Software Update. Mountain Lion users will see the drivers through the Mac App Store for the first time.

MacTech conference returning to LA in October
I've been to the MacTech Mac and IT consultants conference a few years in a row now, and I have to say: If you do any Apple consulting or development, it's a great show to see.

Valve confirms plans to expand Steam content beyond games
Valve is set to open its Steam store up for non-gaming content.
