Shader Printer uses heat-sensitive 'paint' that can be erased with low temperatures (hands-on video)
Lovin' the bold look of those new Nikes? If you're up to date on the athletic shoe scene, you may notice that sneaker designs can give way long before your soles do. A new decaling technique could enable you to "erase" labels and other artworks overnight without a trace, however, letting you change up your wardrobe without shelling out more cash. Apple readying OS X 10.8.1 seed for developers, sources say
Apple is preparing to seed the first beta build of OS X 10.8.1 to developers, say sources for MacRumors. It's expected that the update will be a maintenance release, simply fixing any bugs that made it into the launch version of Mountain Lion. Apple has also likely been working on v10.8.1 for a few weeks already, since the Mountain Lion gold master reached developers more than two weeks before the OS went public.

Samsung patents perfume-packing cellphone... again
Seriously, Samsung, what the heck is with the scented cellphone patents? This isn't the first, or even the second time you've thought to put pockets of perfume in a handset. HP expects to take $8 billion hit over its purchase of EDS
Normally shake ups in management and earnings outlooks don't really grab our attention. But, buried in the PR for just such moves from HP today was a particularly intriguing tid bit of information. NPD: Apple, Samsung control 55 percent of the smartphone market, prepaid sales up 91 percent
According to NPD DisplaySearch, Apple and Samsung control more than half of the American smartphone market. The second-quarter figures reveal that while contract phone sales are flatter than month-old soda, those for pre-paid handsets have shot up by 91 percent compared to the same quarter last year. The upswing is credited to last year's flagship handsets falling down the price ladder, snaring lower-income customers who were unable to afford to be early adopters. NASA's X-48C hybrid wing-body plane completes first test flight
After planting a rover firmly on Mars' surface and testing a new methane-fueled lander, NASA has squeezed in the first test flight of its X-48C hybrid wing-body aircraft. Google app for iOS to get natural-language voice search
Google has announced that within the next few days, the official Google Search app for iOS will be upgraded with natural-language voice requests. Users should, for instance, be able to ask about the weather in a complete sentence and see a forecast, or have the app find the answer to a math question. PowerCam is a powerful photo app with a couple of gotchas
PowerCam for iOS is sort of a grab bag of photo tools wrapped up into one free app. It takes stills and video, and offers a tremendous variety of features for the photo enthusiast.
The app includes a tilt-shift feature for miniature effects, color splash for having specific colors appear in a black-and-white image, plus cropping, rotation, collages and frames. There is much to explore, and the app is easy to use and the results are good. You can even specify high or low resolution output.

IDC: Android more than two-thirds of smartphone market
Android-powered smartphones accounted for 68.1 percent of all smartphones shipped in the second quarter of this year. This according to new numbers out from the International Data Corporation, which found that Google and Apple's operating systems, when taken together, accounted for 85 percent of the smartphone market. IDC's numbers also reflected the declining share of Nokia's defunct Symbian platform and Research in Motion's troubled BlackBerry OS.

Valve announces new Software section for Steam, games to get some company September 5th
We've had some indication that Valve would soon be expanding its Steam offerings beyond games thanks to a new batch of categories that briefly turned up in its Android app last month, and the company has now made the move official. SuperTooth Crystal a decent Bluetooth speakerphone
The SuperTooth Crystal is a Bluetooth hands-free speakerphone for when you're in the car or not able to hold your phone.
Since I live in central London, I don't drive. So I've never needed or used a Bluetooth speakerphone. However, I do have extremely poor cellular reception in my house. Apple grows share of Chinese tablet market during Q2
Apple continued to cement its position as the dominant tablet vendor in China during the second quarter, according to new data from Analysys International. The 2.34 million iPads sold in the region gave Apple a 72.66 percent marketshare; units were up 7.8 percent quarter-to-quarter, and 63.4 percent year-over-year. Notably Apple managed the feat despite only launching the third-generation iPad in the mainland on July 20th.

Google Knowledge Graph coming to all English-speaking nations tomorrow, adds lists to results
Google launched its contextual and intelligent search service, Knowledge Graph, only a few months ago. Till now, it's been limited in its availability and, while most nations will still be left out, tomorrow it will be coming to all "English-speaking" countries. Verizon reveals 20 GB shared data plan
Remember Verizon's announcement of the Share Everything plans earlier this summer? The company has now revealed five additional tiers of data capacity that aren't posted on the Verizon website but can be purchased through arrangement with customer service personnel.

iFixit guide puts Retina MacBook Pro battery swap at $500
Repair outfit iFixit has posted a completed repair guide for the Retina MacBook Pro. The guide breaks tasks down by component, such as the logic board, left and right fans, or the SSD. Of special interest though is the battery, which iFixit estimates could cost $500 to replace "if technicians follow the safer Apple-suggested procedure and replace the entire upper case assembly along with the battery."

IDC: Android and iOS accounted for 85 percent of smartphones shipped in Q2 2012
IDC's Q2 2012 numbers are out and the figures are encouraging, but not spectacular for Apple. According to IDC, Apple shipped 26 million handsets and grabbed 16.9 percent of the global smartphone market. This is a 27.5 percent increase over the same quarter last year.
Despite its double-digit growth, the iPhone didn't outpace the overall smartphone market which grew 44 percent year-over-year. IDC says demand for the iPhone has cooled because of rumors surrounding the launch of the new iPhone sometime this fall.
iOS also still trails Android which grabbed 68.1 percent of the market share. Samsung was the dominant Android manufacturer and shipped 44 percent of the platform's total smartphones in the quarter.

Square, Starbucks partner on coffee shop card transactions
Square has agreed a new partnership with Starbucks Coffee, reports say. Beginning this fall, Square will handle the processing of both credit and debit card transactions at all of Starbucks' 7,000 US locations. Starbucks is also planning to integrate Square Directory into its own apps and network, which could potentially expose Pay with Square users to more merchants. At a minimum, Pay with Square will allow people to find a nearby Starbucks through the Directory.

Square and Starbucks make deal for cellphone payments
You could buy a lot of coffee with $25 million; that's how much money Starbucks is investing in Square as part of a deal to incorporate the mobile payments startup into its store systems. Starting in the fall, Square's Pay with Square app will be enabled for Starbucks purchases, and Starbucks will begin processing all its credit and debit card charges through Square.

Apple is now offering a range of refurbished third-generation iPads on its online store. Pricing for the refurbished units starts at $449 for a 16GB Wi-Fi model and goes up to $779 for a 64GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model. Evernote updates for iOS, adds tap anywhere to edit
If there's one thing that perpetually frustrates us about Evernote on mobile devices, it's the inability to simply start editing a note when we open it up. As is, you've got open one, then tap the edit button, then you can navigate to the portion of the note you want to tweak. Not exactly the most efficient of workflows. That's finally changed, on the iPad and iPhone at least, and simply tapping anywhere in an entry will immediately open the editing tool, with the cursor exactly where you tapped. Apple produces 2010 Samsung report comparing the Galaxy S to the iPhone
On Tuesday, Apple submitted as evidence a 132-page document from Samsung that compares the iPhone to the Galaxy S. According to AllThingsD, the 2010 document lists major and minor features of the Galaxy S and points out how the Samsung phone compares to the iPhone. It also provides recommendations on how Samsung should change the Galaxy S to better compete with the iPhone.

Und da die flächigen, kantigen Designs der Reihe Simplicity die Grenze zwischen Möblierung zur Architektur ohnehin verwischen, hat man sich jetzt als Marketing-Hingucker ein ganzes Haus im gleichen Stil ausgedacht - ein Glashaus im Wortsinn. Nikon's odd financial calendar means that the camera maker is announcing its first quarter results for 2013. Susan Kares Arbeit ist Mac-Benutzern aus früheren Tagen noch bekannt: Von ihr stammen Icons wie der “lachende Mac”, der beim Hochfahren auf dem Bildschirm erscheint oder die “Bombe”, die das System bei Systemabstürzen anzeigte. Sie folgte Steve Jobs später zu dessen Unternehmen NeXT, bevor sie unter anderem bei Microsoft arbeitete.

Parodie: Samsapple – think slightly different
Die ganze Angelegenheit zwischen Samsung und Apple beschäftigt natürlich nicht nur uns hier bei GIGA und alle andere Tech-Portale, sondern hinterlässt auch auf weiterer Ebene ihre Spuren. So auch bei dem amerikanischen Late-Night-Moderator Conan O´Brien, der sich in seiner gleichnamigen Sendung zu einer kleinen Parodie hat hinreißen lassen.
Man muss dazu sagen, dass Samsung in dieser Parodie wirklich alles andere als gut wegkommt. Temporary ban placed on phone AppleID password resets
On Tuesday, Apple ordered its telephone support staff to immediately cease AppleID password changes requests. The likely temporary change in procedure comes following the Wired reporter Mat Honan's identity hack over the weekend, resulting in completely deleted MacBook, iPad, iPhone, and GMail accounts as a result of an attacker tricking an AppleCare rep into resetting Honan's iCloud password, which started a chain of password reset procedures to access the next system, culminating in the reporter's Twitter accounts.

Bank of America app allows deposits through your iPhone or iPad
Bank of America isn't the first to implement this, but customers will be happy to see that the latest update to its iOS apps add the ability to make deposits using a camera on the iPhone or iPad. The iPad version came out July 26, and the iPhone update rolled out Tuesday.
You need to be enrolled in Bank of America's online banking program, and your transactions are encrypted. The update also adds push notifications and allows you to send money to others using their mobile number or an email address.

Apple rolls out new "All on iPad" ad
Apple has rolled out the latest in its TV ads highlighting everything you can do on an iPad, showing off the retina display. This comes out hours after the company was reported to have stopped its "Genius" ads that were shown in the opening days of the Olympics.
The new ad features the Twitter integration in iOS, FaceTime, Keynote, Square, iPhoto, AirPlay integration with the Apple TV and more. You can watch the entire ad below.

AppleCare freezes over-the-phone password resets in wake of hacking incident
The ripples from Mat Honan's weekend security incursion keep pushing outward. Earlier today Amazon shifted policy to prevent account details from being changed via a phone call, which blocks one avenue the hackers used to get the personal info used to compromise Honan's iCloud account. Now, according to Wired, the other shoe has dropped: Apple's phone support team is in a 24-hour freeze for account resets by phone.

Mac designer Kare: Samsung's designs 'beyond coincidence'
Early and influential Apple icon designer Susan Kare, who has also designed well-known icons for Microsoft, NeXT, Eazel, IBM and Facebook, was called by Apple to the witness stand in the Apple vs. Samsung trial to comment on the visual similarities of Samsung's products compared to Apple's. She said that the overall similarity of Samsung's icon, screen and other elements went "beyond coincidence" and reflected a deliberate attempt to mimic Apple's work, to the point that she once confused the two companies' products.

Samsung Best Buy survey details Galaxy Tab return reasons
According to a Samsung survey conducted at Best Buy locations in 2011 and released in the smartphone trial with Apple today, Apple's claims of customers returning Samsung products because the customer thought it was an iPad may be in doubt. Nach Honan-Hack: Amazon schließt Lücke im Kundensupport
Nachdem der Hack und das darauf folgende Löschen von iPhone, iPad und MacBook des Wired-Reporters Mat Honan am vergangenen Wochenende für Aufsehen sorgte, hat Amazon seine Mitarbeiter dazu angewiesen, keine Account-Änderungen mehr per Telefon zu erlauben.

Oracle and Google ordered to disclose astro-turfers by judge
In an unusual declaration, Judge William Alsup has ordered both parties in the Google versus Oracle Java patent case to reveal to the court the identities of bloggers, commenters, and pundits on their payrolls. Alsup doesn't state any detailed reasons for the order, but has said in his ruling that information on "whether any treatise, article, commentary or analysis on the issues posed by this case are possibly influenced by financial relationships to the parties or counsel" would be useful on any appeal.

Amazon responds to iCloud account hacking
Amazon is taking action after learning of the inadvertent role it played in Wired writer Mat Honan's digital nightmare last week, when his iCloud account password was compromised and his Mac was wiped. IRIScan Book 2 mobile scanner: Review and giveaway
Although I tend to use my iPhone 4S and Readdle's Scanner Pro (US$6.99) or JotNot Scanner Pro ($1.99) apps to do most of my scanning, there are still documents that need a regular scanner of some sort. Google has expanded its Maps traffic coverage before, but rarely on a grand scale. The search giant isn't standing on tradition this time: it just flipped on live traffic data for at least the major roads in over 130 cities. Most of the coverage centers around smaller cities in the US, although Google is tipping its hat to Latin America with first-time support for Bogota, San Jose (in Costa Rica) and Panama City. MetroPCS lights up Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services, starts selling LG Connect 4G
MetroPCS may not be grand in scale, but it's certainly not lacking for ambition. Just over a year after announcing its eventual transition to Voice over LTE, the carrier has officially launched its VoLTE services. Canon EOS 7D DSLR firmware ups maximum burst rate, more
Canon has issued a firmware upgade for its EOS 7D DSLR. Firmware v2 adds a number of improvements to the three-year old camera, allowing greater control of image settings and functionality. Changes include a higher maximum RAW burst rate, now up to 25 RAW files or 130 JPEGs, as well as a number of new in-camera editing functions.

Xcode 4.4.1 released as standalone app
Apple has finished smoothing out its Xcode releases with version 4.4.1, which finally brings Xcode out as a standalone app. Instead of just including the developer tools (such as legacy simulators and optional command-line tools), it now has sectioned those off into a separate downloads preference pane.
This is a smart way to go about things. It allow for Xcode to be easily updated from the Mac App Store. You can get Xcode 4.4.1 for free, though remember that actually submitting apps or developing on iOS will require a developer subscription, from the Mac App Store.
