Facebook speaks out on the big app rebuild
We posted about the Facebook app update the other day, and if you haven't updated your app yet, you really should. The app is a prime example of why native development is almost always better than trying to do things with cross-platform web connections, and why it's so important, even for an online service like Facebook, to make sure an app performs well on a given platform. The Instacube displays your Instagram pictures with class
Usually, I'm a little leery of not-yet-funded Kickstarter projects like this, but what the heck, it's Friday, and the Instacube seems pretty awesome. It's just a few thousand dollars away from being funded anyway, so the odds are pretty good that if you order one, you'll get it without a problem.
And yes, it's a digital photo frame, designed especially to grab your great photography work on Instagram. You get to see the photos taken at full resolution, and the unit, once hooked up to your wifi, will even connect up to a few different Instagram feeds, so you can follow more than one set of pictures. Briefly: Amazon Video, Evernote iOS, Google Button
Amazon has made a deal with NBCUniversal Cable & New Media Distribution to expand its streaming catalog. Hundreds of TV episodes will be available to stream through Prime Instant Video, including Heroes, Battlestar Galactica, Parenthood, and Parks and Recreation, in addition to the existing 22,000 movies and TV shows already on the service. Further content expansion in the future has also been hinted at.

Wall Street Journal provides New York, San Francisco Wi-Fi
Throughout the month of September, the Wall Street Journal is offering free Wi-Fi across more than 1,300 hotspots in New York and another 1,000 in San Francisco. The New York hotspots blanket the entirety of high-traffic neighborhoods like Times Square, West Village, and Washington Square Park. Popular locations such as Nob Hill and Fisherman's Wharf will be covered in San Francisco.

Get ready for hurricane season with CaneCast
With the hurricane season upon us, you might be looking for a way to get detailed information about the impact a storm may have on you. Fear not: there are plenty of hurricane apps for the iPhone. Some are from newspapers and TV stations rebranding National Weather Service info, while others have unique features that are worthy of note.
One app I personally like is CaneCast Hurricane Forecaster. It's a US$0.99 app for the iPhone that allows you to monitor current storms, get their exact position in relation to your location, provides a storm track and advises you what the forecast storm classification is at each point on its track.

Apple VP Eddy Cue: Apple TV not likely in the near future
If you were hoping for a 60-inch Apple-branded HDTV for Christmas, get prepared to buy yourself another toy instead. Pacific Crest analyst Andy Hargreaves met Wednesday with Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer and Senior VP for Internet services and software, and today he published a company update saying that "An Apple television appears extremely unlikely in the near-term."
Hargreaves noted that it doesn't appear to be technology that's holding up the entry of Apple into the TV or cable set-top box -- instead, it's the cable TV companies and content providers that are holding up the works. From Hargreaves' report:

DevJuice: Talking with Tim McMorris about royalty-free soundtracks
Several weeks ago, a developer sent a video as part of his TUAW product pitch. The app itself was interesting enough but I was blown away by the video's music. It was smart, it was contemporary, and it had excellent production values.
So I started to google to find out more about this music and discovered Tim McMorris and Audio Jungle. I've written in the distant past about purchasing royalty-free tracks for use in products and videos, but back then it was an expensive option with limited vendors. The track I fell in love with (Give Our Dreams Their Wings to Fly) cost just $14 to license in a video.
That's an amazingly reasonable price for nearly any software dev

TUAW Origin Stories: Pomodorable
If you're into time management principles you may have heard of the Pomodoro Technique. At its core is the notion of setting a timer (generally around 25 minutes) and focusing on one task for the duration. If this interests you, Pomodorable is an attractive Mac timer app that adds a few niceties, like Reminders integration.
I spoke one of the minds behind Pomodorable, Kyle Kinkade, at WWDC. Kyle helped organize IndieDevLab (where we filmed the first round of Origin Stories videos), which was a great place for developers who couldn't attend WWDC to gather and learn.

Briefly: Roccat updates, free font collection
Runecats has launched a new versions of Roccat and Roccat Connect. Roccat is a desktop web browser for Macs that features the option to backup open tabs, bookmarks, settings, and more to the cloud. The latest release adds support for Retina displays, and also includes webGL, Facebook integration, and a new feature called Flick. Flick allows users to quickly share webpages with other users on the same network. Meanwhile, Roccat Connect is an iOS version of the browser that lets users access any tabs open on the desktop client.

Apple vs. Samsung jury asks to stay late, work on verdict
The nine men and women on the jury for the landmark Apple vs. Samsung patent trial going on in San Francisco have asked the court for permission to stay in deliberations for an hour longer than scheduled today, more likely an indication that they are deep into discussions and don't want the session to end early rather than a possibility that they are preparing to wrap up their verdict.

Townsquare Media buys what's left of MOG
Beats' acquisition of MOG ultimately carved the company into two pieces, if not quite evenly: it left both the blog content as well as a music-oriented ad network that's popular, if without nearly as much cachet for the technology crowd as the streaming audio. How to get Notification Center to show you what's playing in iTunes
OS X's Notification Center was introduced in Mountain Lion and is now your one-stop location for all alerts. Besides the customary notifications for incoming emails and reminders, you can also use Notification Center for other content like the title and artist of the current track that's playing in iTunes.

Samsung's new Sydney store closely resembles ... an Apple Store
In case you've missed it, Samsung and Apple are battling it out in a U.S. federal court to determine once and for all if Samsung copied the iPhone and iPad too closely. The South Korean electronics manufacturer apparently still has a crush on Apple's designs, as a new "Samsung Experience Store" in Sydney, Australia's George Street looks surprisingly like an Apple Store.

Retina MacBook Pro owners link display issues to LG panels
Some buyers of the Retina MacBook Pro have been experiencing burn-in and ghosting problems with their notebooks since June, according to complaints received by MacNN and posted on Apple's support forums. The issue appears to be connected to the LG display panels used on some systems, since units that instead have Samsung panels are unaffected. Some users suggest that image quality is also better in general on the Samsung hardware.

Fujifilm retro-styled X-E1 mirrorless camera leaked online
Photos of an unannounced Fujifilm mirrorless camera have surfaced online. Japanese site Digicam Info published leaked images of the X-E1, a camera that looks similar to the Fujifilm X-Pro1 high-end model, complete with classic retro-inspired styling and a pop-up flash on the top. The model replaces the "hybrid" optical and electronic versions on the X-Pro1 and X100, respectively.

Eddy Cue mum on Apple TV prospects, hints at slow approach
Plans for an Apple TV set (or a more advanced set-top) may still be some time in coming, suggests Pacific Crest's Andy Hargreaves. On Wednesday the analyst met with Apple's CFO, Peter Oppenheimer, and its senior VP for Internet software and services, Eddy Cue. Hargreaves pressed the idea of a "more significant move into TV distribution," according to a new memo. In response, Cue repeated a frequent company position that Apple will only enter markets where it thinks it can create good customer experiences and solve major obstacles.

Cases for 'iPad mini' indicate camera, second mic on back
Despite the lack of any formal announcement from Apple, a handful of overseas manufacturers have once again jumped the gun and developed accessory cases designed to fit the so-called "iPad mini" said to be announced sometime next month. Apple issues takedown to outfit selling 'iPhone 5' kit
Apple has sent a DMCA takedown notice to the operators of iphone5mod.com, a site that was selling an "iPhone 5 conversion kit" resembling leaked photos of next-generation iPhone backs. In a letter from OpSec Security, which says it's acting on Apple's behalf, the site is accused of "offering for sale and selling merchandise bearing counterfeit Apple trademark(s)," something that violates US federal and state laws. The company behind the kit is identified as operating in Shenzhen, China.

One year of Tim Cook as CEO of Apple
Exactly one year ago today, Tim Cook took over the leadership of Apple from Steve Jobs. CNET's Josh Lowensohn reports that his first year at the company has been a huge success.
Not everyone believed that Cook, who had filled in for Jobs twice during his battle with pancreatic cancer, would keep the company on its incredible journey. Both Apple and Samsung lose in South Korea
Apple and Samsung faced off in a South Korean court and both companies came out on the losing side, says a report in the Wall Street Journal. In a split decision, the Seoul District Court ruled that Samsung and Apple both violate each other's patents. Both sides must pay limited damages and face an injunction on some of their products.
Samsung must pay Apple 25 million won (US$22,000) for violating patents that cover the bounce-back feature found on Apple's iOS devices. This allows the screen to bounce back when a user has dragged an item like an image past its boundaries. The court also ruled that Apple violated Samsung's patents covering wireless networking technology and was fined 40 million won ($35,000).

Daily iPhone App: Minutes is a simple timer for your tasks
Timer apps come in all shapes and sizes. Some are complex and let you time multiple events at once, while others, like Minutes -Timer and Stopwatch, are meant to be quick and easy to use. Minutes has a simple, but functional UI that lets you set a timer for a single event by dragging a pointer around the face of a pseudo-clock.
Once you set your timer, the app displays the time remaining in minutes and seconds. It also displays the time that the timer will end, which is handy for tasks that need to end before a certain time of day. WhatsApp konnte im vergangenen Oktober noch davon berichten, 1 Mrd. Nachrichten am Tag zu verschicken. Kein ganzes Jahr später hat sich die Zahl der Instant Messages verzehnfacht. Richtig, 10 Mrd. Nachrichten gehen jeden Tag ein und aus. Vor allem in den USA setzte der Erfolg des Messengers ein wenig verspätet ein. Erst diese Woche konnte die App auf Platz 1 in den amerikanischen iPhone-Downloadcharts steigen. TangiBot manufactures ethics controversy by replicating open-source Makerbot 3D printer
A Kickstarter entry has managed to stir the fairness pot by touting a MakerBot Replicator clone called TangiBot -- legally copied from the original 3D printer's open source plans. A Japanese site called Digicam Info has leaked pics of a previously unknown Fujifilm mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera, the X-E1. Neues iPhone und iPad mini: Apple plant offenbar zwei separate Events
Am 12. September wird Apple das neue iPhone vorstellen – da ist sich die Gerüchteküche relativ sicher. Im Herbst soll außerdem auch ein iPad mini erscheinen. Anders als bisher vermutet wird Apple das kleine iPad aber auf einem anderen, späteren Event vorstellen.

Unternehmen wollen Windows 8 nicht nutzen
Das neue Windows-8-Betriebssystem kommt am 26. Oktober 2012 in den Handel. Im Gegensatz dazu wird der Support für das in die Jahre gekommene Windows XP, welches noch bei vielen Privatpersonen und größtenteils Unternehmen zum Einsatz kommt, im April 2014 eingestellt. Im Rahmen der 23. Flaschenpost - einem Newsletter der Piratenpartei - ist mir eine Umfrage der Universität Erfurt begegnet, welche die Mediennutzung bzw. Nutzung von Nachrichtenseiten untersucht. Dabei wird eine Trennung in klassische und “alternative” Nachrichtenseiten formuliert. Der Begriff der “alternativen Nachrichtenseiten” wird in der Umfrage bereits verwendet, bevor er erklärt wird, was schon einmal schlecht ist. Gänzlich irritierend ist allerdings die spätere Erklärung:
Auf diesen Seiten ist es mithilfe von Open-Source-Software für jeden Leser möglich zu partizipieren, d. h. sich zu beteiligen, indem er Beiträge bewerten, mitgestalten oder eigenständig verfassen kann. Beispiele sind Nachrichtenblogs, wikinews.org oder indymedia.org.

Aussichten für den PC-Markt 2012 trüben sich ein
Die Marktforscher von IDC haben aktualisierte Analysen zum PC-Markt bekannt gegeben. Microsoft erhält neues Logo: Quadratisch, praktisch ...

Gute 25 Jahre hat Microsoft auf sein altes Logo gebaut und jetzt wurde es in Redmond scheinbar Zeit für einen Neuanstrich. In reduziertem Sans Serif und mattem Grau zeigt sich das minimale neue Branding und auch die geschwungene Windows-Fahne musste einem simplen Quadrat in Google-Farben weichen. Nach dem Break gibt es einen kurzen Promoclip. Was halten wir jetzt davon? A South Korean court has ruled that both Apple and Samsung are guilty of patent infringement, bringing an end to two lawsuits filed last year. The Associated Press and Wall Street Journal report that Apple and Samsung have been ordered to stop selling certain devices in South Korea, with a court ruling that Apple and Samsung have infringed on each other's patents. The companies are also ordered to pay damages.
The ban affects some models of iPads and iPhones, but the AP was not specific on which ones are banned. We'll update this article as we get more information.

AT&T promised it would have Mobile Share plans rolled out by now, and here they are. Remember that the only way you'll be able to use FaceTime over cellular is with one of these plans, so ante up or switch, compadres.
