Camalapse: Make your own panning time-lapse iPhone movies
So, you've always wanted to be able to take one of those cool time-lapse iPhone movies that slowly pans from one direction to another? Now you can do it easily and inexpensively with the Camalapse, a US$25 accessory that works with a Glif ($20) or other iPhone tripod mount to give your iPhone a spin as it's taking a movie.
Design
Basically, the inventors had a simple idea. Take something like a one-hour mechanical windup kitchen timer, put a tripod mount on top of it, and voilà! You can use your favorite time-lapse photography app while the iPhone (or other lightweight camera) slowly pans around up to a full 360°.

Facebook Camera update adds notifications, lets you pick and choose albums
The Facebook Camera just scored a nice little update in the iTunes app store. Now the filter-equipped shooter will let you pick and choose which folders to upload your pics to -- something that probably should have been included in version one. Apple Store opens in Cologne, more stores underway
Apple will be offering one new store opening and one re-opening this weekend, with a store opening its doors for the first time in Cologne, Germany on Saturday September 1 and the Bellevue, Washington store hosting a grand re-opening party. In addition, construction is underway on a second Apple retail store for Hong Kong and a larger refurbishment for the store in New York's Walt Whitman mall. Apple strikes licensing deal with Motorola in Germany
It's a minor thing, perhaps, but Motorola and Apple seem to be coming to a limited set of terms in Germany regarding the ongoing patent battles there. Very few details have emerged, but Engadget says, "The terms seem to include only 'cellular standard-essential' patents, which means the company's claims regarding WiFi and video codecs could still be used as an avenue of attack."

Motorola, Apple OK agreement on FRAND licenses in Germany
Google subsidiary Motorola may be feeling some pressure to negotiate in better faith following the Apple vs. Samsung case, a court filing has revealed. Apple and Motorola are fighting a case in Germany revolving around Motorola's charges that Apple infringed on some Motorola patents, with Apple arguing that Motorola's patents are FRAND-eligible and the company wouldn't licence at a reasonable rate. The amended paperwork shows Motorola finally agreeing to a FRAND license.

WSJ: Samsung to fight ban
After a guilty verdict was handed down in its trial with Apple, Samsung now faces a possible injunction that could ban eight of its smartphones from being sold in the US. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the company responded to Apple's injunction request with a simple statement that said, "We will take all necessary measures to ensure the availability of our products in the U.S. market."
Samsung will try to overturn the original guilty verdict by filing post-trial motions with Judge Lucy Koh. If this legal maneuver fails, then Samsung will file an appeal which could make its way

Java 1.7 zero-day exploit unlikely to impact most Mac users
For a widely distributed runtime like Oracle's Java, a zero-day vulnerability (a security flaw exploited to create malware before the platform's maintainers have a chance to analyze and respond) is your basic nightmare. US Federal Aviation Administration to re-examine in-flight electronics use
Chances are good that you'll still need to put your electronic devices away during takeoff and landing, but the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is forming a combined government-industry group to determine when your computer, smartphone and tablet can be safely used.
The major reason you're asked to power down those devices during portions of the flight is to prevent interference with communications and navigation devices during the most crucial phases. The group the FAA is forming will include participants from pilot, flight attendant, and passenger groups, as well as airlines, mobile companies, and aviation manufacturers.

ZTE launching Grand X LTE on China Mobile in Hong Kong
ZTE's LTE-capable version of its Grand X smartphone will arrive on China Mobile's GSM network at the end of this month. The Grand X LTE (T82) is the company's first single-chip LTE handset, coming with a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 8-megapixel rear camera and Ice Cream Sandwich. Samsung capitulates, will modify phones to avoid Apple ban
Samsung, facing possible US sales injunctions against a range of products that generate billions of dollars in US sales annually, is talking to carriers about feature removals and workarounds along with design modifications on some of its smartphones in an effort to keep the products available to US customers. AnandTech: NFC im neuen iPhone sehr unwahrscheinlich

Neuentdeckte Java-Sicherheitslücke gefährdet auch OS X-Systeme [Security]
In diesem Jahr sorgte der Flashback Trojaner für Aufsehen. Er ermöglichte es Hackern, über eine Sicherheitslücke in Java in OS X-Systeme einzubrechen und dort herumzuspionieren. Es dauerte einige Zeit, bis Apple das Problem in den Griff bekam, und spätestens seit dem Flashback Virus dürfte klar sein, dass auch OS X nicht komplett ohne Malware ist.

Twitter changes cause Tweetbot for Mac alpha to be pulled
We're starting to see changes to Twitter and Twitter clients following the announcement of new API rules. Late yesterday, Tapbots pulled the alpha version of Tweetbot for Mac. Paul Haddad explained that the company tried to work with Twitter to get around the user token limit during the beta-testing period. Twitter didn't find any solution acceptable, Haddad said, so the public alpha download was pulled. Those who already have the alpha client are still able to use it.

iTunes Festival: Konzerte lassen sich direkt auf Apple TV streamen
Auch in diesem Jahr findet wieder ein iTunes Festival statt. Während einige wenige iTunes-Benutzer über eine Verlosung Karten für die Konzertreihe in London erhalten haben, können andere immerhin über einen Livestream zusehen. Apple Stores still in turmoil, sources claim
The labor situation in Apple Stores is still in a rough state, despite promises by the company, according to sources for ifoAppleStore. The people say for instance that contrary to statements by Apple retail head John Browett, workers were recently laid off or fired, but later just rehired. And while interstore transfers are now going through, demotions aren't being reversed, overtime is still limited, and managers are assigning minimum hours to part-timers. A Chinese case maker -- Shenzhen Gekai Technology -- is selling what it claims are cases for the fifth-generation iPod touch, notes Giz-China. Adobe posts Lightroom 4.2, Camera Raw 7.2 candidates
Adobe has posted initial release candidates for two upcoming software updates, Lightroom 4.2 and Camera Raw 7.2. In both cases the updates add RAW compatibility for several cameras, such as Canon's EOS 650D (Rebel T4i) and EOS M, and Panasonic's FZ200, G5, and LX7. Tracking of stolen iPhone leads to San Francisco chase
Tracking a stolen iPhone led to an elaborate chase through the streets of San Francisco earlier today, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. Around 6:30 AM, two armed robbers stole an iPhone from a person on a street in the neighborhood of Ocean View. Using a GPS tracking app -- possibly Find My iPhone -- police were able to narrow the phone's location down to a place in Noe Valley. When the suspects spotted police closing in, they ran, and one of them tried to climb over a gate near St. Paul's Catholic Church.

Apple seeds fourth developer build of OS X 10.7.5
Apple has released a fourth beta of OS X 10.7.5 to developers. The download, build 11G45, is about 1.16GB as a delta, or 1.93GB as a combo update. FCC examines plan to tax broadband subscription fees
The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is evaluating a plan to place a new tax on broadband Internet service. The move would generate funds for the Connect America Fund, a subsidy created from the Universal Service Fund in 2011 to expand Internet access to rural and underserved areas. iOS and Android make for fastest tech adoption ever
Mobile marketing and analytics firm Flurry has another great research post up, this time about the speed of adoption for both iOS and Android. This one goes a little far into comparing apples and oranges, so to speak, but it's still interesting. Flurry notes that both iOS and Android app usages has blown up in the last few years, so much so that it's seeing traffic increases of over a few hundred percent from the past year in places like China, Brazil, and Chile.

Tapbots kills Tweetbot for Mac alpha over API limits
Tapbots has stopped public testing of the alpha version of Tweetbot for Mac and pulled the code offline, according to the developer's blog. The company blames a recent change to the official Twitter API, which restricts the number of "tokens" an app can have, in turn limiting the number of customers an app can support without Twitter's approval. New Java 7 exploit affects OS X, Windows, Linux users
A new security exploit in Java 7 is affecting Mac, Windows, and Linux users alike, according to an engineering manager for Metasploit, an open-source penetration testing framework. The vulnerability is described as "super dangerous," since an attack can be triggered simply by visiting a hacked or intentionally malicious website. NIST seeks comments on PC BIOS protection draft report
The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released a report offering advice to PC manufacturers on how they can assist the public good by protecting the BIOS used on servers. The report is a draft, and comments can be left with the agency until September 14, 2012. Pictures can be annotated with captions, which only appear once you've tapped an image. A second tap replaces the album backdrop with a black background.
If you have a Dropbox account, the albums can be saved there, and retrieved from the cloud if disaster strikes. Additionally, images can be emailed or sent to Facebook directly from the app.
