Apple Store App: Jezt auch iWork-Vorinstallation möglich
Nachdem wir bereits heute morgen berichteten, dass neue Macs mit den iWork-Apps ab Werk beim Kauf im Online Store ausgestattet werden können, gibt es nun auch ein Update der Apple Store App für das iPhone, die dies ermöglicht.

Apple's plan for Reno data center gets green light
Apple's gotten the thumbs-up for another data center, this one in the biggest little city in the world, Reno, Nevada. Unfortunately, the deal itself doesn't hold a lot of weight, but at least Apple's gotten another nod in the right direction. The Nevada Board of Economic Development put its support behind the ongoing deal, agreeing to bring in the data center, and provide Apple with up to $89 million in tax breaks.
Now, that board doesn't actually oversee deals like that, so a lack of endorsement by this board doesn't mean the deal would have been dead in the water. Local governments have already approved most of the tax breaks that Apple needed from Reno. But there were some concerns on this board, and ther

Boeing prepares to deliver United's 787 Dreamliner, we climb aboard for a tour

Apple does not plan to appear before Australian price inquiry
Apple is in hot water in Australia for refusing to appear in front of a House of Representatives inquiry into retail pricing, says stuff.co.nz.
A report by the House of Representatives standing committee on infrastructure and communications claims Apple (and other tech companies like Microsoft) charge significantly more for products in Australia than they do for the same products in the US. The committee wants to know why this pricing disparity exists and has asked Apple for an explanation. The Cupertino company handed over a confidential submission, but the confidentiality clause prevented the committee from using this information in its report.

Photos show expansion of Apple's North Carolina datacenter
New aerial photos obtained by Wired reveal some of Apple's recent progress on expanding its North Carolina datacenter. Immediately next to the main facility -- which handles iCloud and iTunes traffic -- is Apple's so-called "tactical" datacenter, which provides some unknown support functions. Across the road is a 100-acre solar farm, still under construction, which should eventually generate 20MW of power. Also seen in photos is a power substation, and small plot which may be where Apple intends to put its 4.8MW biogas facility.

Pink feather boa time! Fusion-io throws surprise birthday party for Woz
Apple co-founder and legend Steve Wozniak won't officially turn 62 until August 11, but that wasn't enough to keep flash memory tech company Fusion-io from holding a surprise birthday party for him last night. Ina Fried from AllThingsD was in attendance and provided a photo record of the event.

Apple, Samsung, Amazon, ASUS grow Q2 tablet shipments
Several tablet makers grew worldwide tablet shipments year-over-year in the second quarter, even as Apple continued its dominance, according to new IDC numbers. As a whole the tablet market reached 25 million units, rising 66.2 percent over Q2 2011. Deposition reveals iPhone prototype with curved glass

iPad "Smarter Cover" patent application would add display, controls to cover
Like your iPad Smart Cover? You can look forward to a possible future "Smarter Cover" from Apple if the company follows up on a patent application filed about a year ago for a Smart Cover-like tablet cover with a flexible secondary display.
As shown in the lovely, high-resolution color images filed with the patent application (one seen above), Apple's idea would take power from a connector on the side of the iPad to drive a flexible display in one of the cover segments for adding extra icons, controlling media playback, or displaying notifications.

Apple considered curved glass for original iPhone model
At one point early into its development, Apple was considering using a curved glass display, a deposition from a former Apple designer reveals. Douglas Satzger is currently the VP of industrial design at Intel, but held several jobs at Apple between 1996 and 2008, such as Industrial Design Creative Lead and Industrial Design Manager. The deposition -- evidence in the ongoing Apple v. Samsung trial -- has Satzger saying that Apple had "strong interest in doing two pieces of shaped glass," seen in a prototype identified as 0355.

LHC: Higgs kommt näher

Day One 1.8 adds photos, geotagging, more
My favorite app for both iOS and Mac, Day One (US$4.99), has received an update to version 1.8 that adds a number of features to inspire your imagination in personal journaling. The iOS version is now available, while the Mac edition is still in progress.
What's new in Day One? The app now adds photos to your journal, a great way of adding memories of a special day or person. On the iOS app, photos can be pulled from the regular Photo Library or snapped on the fly, and there's also integration with the awesome Camera+ app. The Mac app allows images to be dragged and dropped right onto an entry, or loaded through the standard Finder Open dialog.

Time Warner Cable lost 169,000 subscribers, spares DirecTV's blushes

Sharp's president says new iPhone screens will ship this month
Speaking at a press event after announcing its quarterly earnings, Sharp president Takashi Okuda said then company was preparing to ship displays for the new iPhone. Reuters quotes Okuda as saying, "Shipments will start in August."

Mass production of new iPhone not expected until late Sept.
If Apple is in fact holding an iPhone event on September 12th, it could create some unexpected problems, an investor memo from Sterne Agee's Shaw Wu indicates. Based on "supplier checks," the analyst notes that he only expects volume production of iPhones to happen in late September. If so that could meant that while suppliers will make a fair amount of money in the September quarter, Apple itself won't see a substantial amount of money until the December quarter.

AT&T agrees to acquire NextWave for $25 million, gobbles up WCS and AWS spectrum

Magic 2013 arrived on the App Store recently, and it was a long time coming. It's the first real version of Magic: The Gathering that we've seen since Apple's platform was first created. DirecTV waves goodbye to 52,000 subscribers in first ever net loss of customers
Viacom's frenemy, DirecTV, has announced that it suffered a net loss of subscribers for the first time in its history. Use Eve to learn Mac OS X shortcuts
Eve is a brilliant little program that I just installed on my MacBook -- it's got one function only, and that is simply to pop up on the screen whenever you do something with your mouse, and remind you that there's a way to do it with your keyboard.
I am a huge fan of keyboard shortcuts, but I have a terrible memory for them, and Eve is designed to fix exactly that problem. Most people know Command-X, Command-C, and Command-V for cut, copy and paste, but I often forget about other shortcuts for common tasks, so I'm hoping Eve can help me build up some muscle memory for them.

An Apple patent application first filed in August last year has revealed a design for a Smart Cover with a flexible secondary display. According to the patent filing with the USPTO, Apple says that flexible display technology can be integrated into the flexible cover without changing the overall form factor of the device. Apple seeks patent for Smart Cover with embedded secondary display
According to an application to the USPTO this morning, Apple believes it's possible to build a flexible display into an iPad cover in order to "greatly enhance" the functionality of the tablet itself. Taking power and data from a dedicated connector on the side of the slate, at least one segment of the cover could be used to augment the main display with extra icons, or operate as a separate media control interface, or simply display notifications. Microsoft bestätigt: Windows 8 ist fertig

Gestern abend hat Microsoft bekanntgegeben, dass Windows 8 nun offiziell fertiggestellt ist. Damit hat das neue Betriebssystem den Status RTM erreicht und wird an die Computer-Hersteller ausgeliefert. Entwickler mit MSDN-Abonnement und TechNet-Kunden erhalten die finale Version (Build 9200) am 15. August. Am Tag darauf soll die Enterprise Edition für Kunden mit Software Assurance verfügbar sein. Ausserdem will Microsoft ebenfalls am 15.August die finale Version von Visual Studio 2012 veröffentlichen, die die Entwicklung von Apps für Windows 8 unterstützt.

Nevada approves local deal for Apple server farm
The Nevada Board of Economic Development has endorsed a state-sponsored deal brokered by the Nevada City Council to entice Apple to build a data center in Reno. The deal springs from a state law giving the economic development agency's executive director free rein to negotiate deals with qualifying companies. The approved deal grants Apple $89 million in tax breaks in exchange for an iCloud data center and support facilities. After construction, the combined facilities will employ a minimum of 35 full-time workers and up to 200 contract workers.

AMD hires away noted Apple chip designer Jim Keller
Jim Keller, a veteran chip designer who started with Digital Equipment Corporation's Alpha processor before eventually starting P.A. Semi and subsequently joining Apple, has left the company to join Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). Keller will help lead the company in an effort to develop lower-power but more-efficient processors based on the ARM design, similar to the work he did with P.A. Semi and Apple. AMD recently noted it was now licensing ARM's processor designs.

Microsoft proposes principles for 'patent peace'
On the official Microsoft Technet blog, Microsoft has detailed what it sees as the path to ending the ongoing patent wars between tech companies. While oriented towards its battle with Motorola and parent company Google, Microsoft believes that "patent peace" can only be found through "good faith engagement that is based on two simple, common sense principles." Gmail 1.3 for iOS now saves image attachments
The official Gmail app for iPhone recently got a nice update, and in addition to a few bugfixes and performance enhancements, users now have the ability to save picture attachments straight to their iPhone (or iPad's) camera reel. That's a nice feature -- it means that you can browse and save attachments more easily.
I can imagine some nice use cases as well: You could grab an image from Gmail and put it right into a slideshow on your iPad, or send yourself some images from another computer, and insert them on to your iPhone or iPad's lock screen wallpaper easily.

Although there are many electrostatic styluses for the iPad for those who wish to use them, the seemingly unattainable goal of creating a pressure-sensitive stylus eluded peripheral manufacturers until now. Adonit's Jot Touch (US$99.99) became available to the public earlier this week, becoming the first pressure-sensitive stylus for the iPad.

Earlier Apple-Twitter investment talk linked to integration
Recently-reported talks -- in which Apple was rumored to be interested in investing in Twitter -- were actually linked to Apple's eventual integration of Twitter into iOS, the Wall Street Journal reports. Last week the New York Times indicated that Apple had "in recent months" been having discussions about investing several hundred million dollars into Twitter. The story died very quickly, however, when publications like the Journal revealed that the talks had actually taken place over a year ago, and hadn't led to any serious consideration by Apple.
