Firefox 16 beta arrives with web app hooks, Reader Mode for Android and VoiceOver for Macs
Firefox 15 is barely fresh off the vine, and we're already looking at a beta version 16 for both desktop platforms and Android. Adobe promises Retina support for Photoshop, other CS6 apps
The advent of Retina across Apple's iOS and Mac product lines has meant beautiful HiDPI displays for well-heeled owners -- and bountiful headaches for application developers who have to rework, revise and rebuild their products to take advantage of all those lovely little pixels. Samsung threatens Apple with LTE lawsuit, partners with MS
Among the numerous reactions Samsung has had to its sweeping loss to Apple in the first full patent trial against the iPhone maker, the company has demonstrated that it intends to continue pursuing litigation. In addition to entering talks with wireless carriers about design and software changes to avoid further infringement of Apple patents, the company has said it will sue Apple again if it brings out any LTE-equipped devices.

Delivery Status widget lets you track packages from your Dashboard
Some of us get a lot of packages. Whether you do a lot of shopping via Amazon, have a thing for Zappos shoes, or are just waiting for the goodies you won in a TUAW giveaway to show up, it's often nice to know where those packages are and when they're going to get to you. Reuters: Google, Apple CEOs in patent talks
Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Larry Page are said to have been engaged in behind-the-scenes discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing patent struggle between the two companies. According to Reuters, Page and Cook's talks are part of a larger effort in which lower-level officials have also met with the goal of achieving some sort of detente between the erstwhile technology partners. The exact scope of Page and Cook's talks is unknown; they could focus on a limited set of issues or they could be working out a broader settlement of many disputes.

Google and Apple may be talking about patents
Reuters is reporting that Apple CEO Tim Cook and his counterpart at Google, Larry Page, have been meeting to discuss the ongoing patent issues between the two companies.
The two CEOs apparently had a phone conversation as late as last week, and are expected to talk again soon. A source told Reuters that a meeting was scheduled for August 31, but has been delayed for unknown reasons. It's also unknown if Cook and Page are working on a possible settlement of the many patent disputes between the two companies or are focused on just a subset of issues.

Report: Mountain Lion already at 10 percent of Mac userbase
According to tracking from ad network Chitika, the latest version of OS X is already installed on over 10 percent of Macs accessing the Internet, a reliable measure of the active user base. The figure comes only one month after the launch of Mountain Lion, meaning the OS version is well ahead of Lion penetration at the same point in its release schedule. People toss around the term "fanboy" to the point where it means almost nothing, but if you're looking for a real fan of Apple's retail store aesthetic, check out David Wu's home office.

Apple rejects iPhone app that tracks military drone strikes
Apple has a reputation for sometimes banning apps for reasons that confound developers. The latest App Store rejection story comes from Wired, which talked to developer Josh Begley about his Drones+ app.
Drones+ is a simple, but informative app that alerts you when the US military executes a strategic strike using a drone. The information is pulled from a publicly available database maintained by the UK's Bureau of Investigative Journalism. Each strike is logged in the app and marked by a pushpin on a map. Clicking on a pushpin will bring up media reports about the strike.

Fido switches on LTE, gives Canadians a taste of slightly more budget-minded 4G
Canadians have had fairly limited options for LTE-based 4G if they didn't want to turn to the three main carrier brands: they could go to a Bell-owned Virgin Mobile, and that's it. Hey, it's a shoe-themed Bluetooth speaker -- because, hey, why not, right? Jabra announced the punnily named Solemate yesterday, and we happened to run into one on the floor of this year's IFA. It's a small, solid little speaker with a hearty rubber sole that sits on the bottom, protecting the device from shocks and the like. States reach $69 million settlement with three publishers in e-book price fixing case
When the US Department of Justice sued Apple and five major book publishers over alleged e-book price rigging, it immediately became clear that a few of these companies would do just about anything to avoid trial. That same day, three of the publishers -- HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster and Hachette -- elected to settle with the DoJ. Now, those same three publishers have reached an agreement in 49 states (all but Minnesota), wherein consumers will receive a combined $69 million in compensation. Amazon claims Kindle Fire 'sold out' ahead of new models
Just days ahead of an expected September 6 announcement of new models, Amazon has conveniently "sold out" of its stock of the current Kindle Fire and Kindle Touch, also reporting short supply on other Kindle models. The company, which refuses to release sales or shipment numbers, also claims that the Fire has captured 22 percent of the US tablet market, though it has no significant presence in e-reader sales outside the US, with IDC estimating perhaps a five percent share worldwide.

White is the new black in the automobile world thanks to Steve Jobs, says a report in Motoramic. BMW design works lead designer Sandy McGill told Motoramic that Apple has breathed new life into the color. Hidden photos found in Mac SE ROM
The folks from NYC Resistor found an old Macintosh SE computer on the side of the road in Brooklyn, NY. The team grabbed the device and started to dig into the Macintosh's ROM. Using modern tools on the old code obtained from a ROM dump, the team pulled four images that were added to the ROM as an Easter egg. The images, available on NYC Resitor's website, are reportedly of the team that created the ROM and each one shows a different group of people.
Besides images, the NYC Resistor team also found a fifth surprise buried in the ROM, but they couldn't parse it out of the ROM at this time. Based on the strings in the ROM, the team guesses that it could be an audio file. Yo

Designed for more realistic living quarters, LG's unleashed its Personal Smart TV to the IFA crowds. With a 27-inch IPS display, 1920 x 1080, you'll find the typical stable of connectivity options, including two HDMI, three USB, component, LAN and SCART connections. News: LaunchPort announces AP.3 iPad sleeve
LaunchPort has announced its new AP.3 magnetic sleeve ($150) for the new iPad and iPad 2. Available in black or white, AP.3 fits on the iPad, enabling it to magnetically mount to a base station or wall station for inductive charging. While mounted, the sleeve can be rotated 360 degrees. Announced yesterday, the device made an appearance on the IFA show room floor this week, boasting a big and bright 4.7-inch IPS display that makes the its brethren looking downright shrimpy by comparison. Rare Apple I to be sold at auction
Another piece of Apple history is headed to the auction block later this year. According to a report in Computer World, an original Apple I computer will be offered at a Christie's auction that will be held October 9 in London, England. The Apple I belonged to former Apple employee Joe Copson, who reportedly tried to sell the unit on eBay last year for US$179,000. This Apple I is housed in a plastic casing that loosely resembles the Apple II and is missing some DRAM, said Mike Willegal, an expert on the Apple I computer, who talked to Computer World.

Garmin today announced updates for StreetPilot Onboard and NAVIGON smartphone navigation apps to provide better orientation in cities. With Urban Guidance, users are able to integrate public transportation into their route, complete with detailed itineraries of transit stops.
The new Last Mile function automatically saves the location of the user's car when continuing by foot, making it easy to find it on the way back. While it might not be as huge as the Super Hi Vision panel lingering in the same darkened theater, Panasonic's new 103-inch demonstration display has the ability to offer up a 3D view to five different viewers -- as long as they're in the right visual sweet spot. The effect is subtle, natural, although colors felt little bit muted compared to the 145-inch prototype, with the demo videos drawing us in to its demo reel, rather than pushing out an image. Tucked away into a dark corner of Panasonic's booth is the clear highlight of the outfit's IFA 2012 showcase: a 145-inch 8K plasma display panel. NASA completes successful parachute drop simulation for Orion spacecraft
NASA has always used the desert as its own personal playground, and we'd imagine that its team had a blast in Arizona yesterday, as a mock parachute compartment of the Orion spacecraft was dropped from 25,000 feet above Earth. Die Idee ist so einfach wie genial: Mobile Geräte werden automatisch aufgeladen, sobald sie sich in der Nähe eines anderen Stück Technik befinden, zum Beispiel einem Ultrabook. Been holding out on that Kindle Fire purchase because you just can't wean yourself off the eye-friendly e-ink? Well, this patent application from the folk at Amazon suggests this is something they're not unaware of. The patent outlines a device incorporating two or more displays, one being static in nature (a-la e-ink) and the other more suitable for video (that'd be LCD or OLED etc). Dell announces XPS 10 Windows 8 hybrid, XPS 12 Duo convertible
Our next stop on the Windows 8 announcement train is Dell, which today unveiled the XPS 10, a Windows RT hybrid device that runs Microsoft's latest OS on a 10-inch touch-enabled display. Dell says you can expect up to 20 hours of battery life, though the company didn't touch on CPU and storage specs. Dell also unveiled the XPS Duo 12, which sports a 12.5-inch touch display. When closed, it looks like any old XPS laptop, with a machined aluminum built and carbon fiber surrounding the display. To enter tablet mode, you literally flip the Duo 12's display around and close it over the keyboard. Processor options will go up to Core i7, and the keyboard includes backlighting. Both products will be available later this year after the official Windows 8 launch.

Butterweich vorgeführt mit Epic Citadel auf einem ASUS Vivo Tab RT mit Tegra 3 deutet das darauf hin, dass die Entwickler keine größeren Probleme damit haben sollten, Xbox- und PC-Games aufs neue OS zu übertragen. The Chinese city of Shenzhen is set to raise its minimum wage by 13.3 percent in 2013, according to DigiTimes. Even though the city already has one of the highest minimum wages in China, the change is thought to be a way for officials to defuse possible civil unrest, since in recent years rising living costs have triggered a number of protests across the country. Logitech is bolstering its new Ultimate Ears range with four different headphones: one in-ear option and three headsets. Of the three can-style headphones, the UE 9000 boasts the highest price tag. Able to be folded flat like a pair of sunglasses, the headphones can take advantage of being both wireless through Bluetooth connectivity and its 10-hour battery, and through an optional cable connection.

Delta to deploy 4,500 iPads at US airport restaurants
Delta Air Lines is deploying 250 iPads at restaurants in Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, according to an announcement. Travelers can find the hardware at Concourse G's MinniBar, Mimosa, and Shoyu. The rollout follows one at New York's LaGuardia Airport, and is part of a plan that will eventually see Delta using over 4,500 iPads at three airport hubs within the next year.

Authors Group, licensing expert slam DOJ's e-book settlement
US District Court Judge Denise Cote of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York presiding over the Apple e-books pricing settlement case has granted amici curiae, or friends of the court, status to two opposing parties. Writer's advocacy organization The Authors Guild, and licensing expert Bob Kohn have been given permission to file an amicus brief with the court, decrying the proposed settlement, and pointing out what they see as flaws in the Department of Justice's arguments.

Mehr Windows bei Samsung: diesmal das Samsung ATIV Tab-Tablet, auf dem Windows RT läuft. Fühlt sich fast so an wie ein Galaxy Tab und macht auch einen dementsprechend soliden Eindruck mit seinem Aluminiumgehäuse. Einen S-Pen gibt es zwar nicht, aber dafür reagiert das mit einem 1,5 GHz Snapdragon S4-Prozessor und 2 GB Arbeitsspeicher gut gerüstete Tablet ziemlich flott. Video nach dem Break.

Rare but nonfunctional Apple I goes to auction in London
A nonworking Apple I board have been listed for auction on October 9 at Christie's of London. The unit, with serial number 22, came from former Apple employee Joe Copson. The unit originally came with just 8K of RAM and no case, keyboard or monitor. Only 50 or so of the roughly 150-200 units produced have survived, and only six are thought to be in working order. The auction expects the machine to sell for between $80,000 and $125,000.

GIMP debuts as native Mac app for first time
The developers of GIMP have, for the first time, released a native Mac version of the software. While the app has been available to Mac users for some time, previous versions required users to load it under the X11 Window environment, making it inconvenient. All releases as of v2.8.2 should have a DMG installer file available.

As iOS astronomy apps go, Star Walk is certainly at the top for graphics and depth of features. We've reviewed it favorably in the past. Version 6.0 today adds realistic sunset and sunrise effects, a completely new info window, and a new and improved gallery of astronomy images.
