OnLive sells company, lays off about 50% of staff
Just in case you didn't hear over the weekend, the cloud computing service OnLive experienced a little bit of a crisis: On Friday morning, the CEO of the company spoke to staff to essentially tell them all that they were fired, and that the assets of the company were being bought by another investor. The good news here is that the OnLive service hasn't gone down at all, and it reportedly isn't going down any time soon. But the bad news is that many of OnLive's employees have lost their jobs, and any investments in the company's potential future that they might have had.
What does this mean for those of us on Mac and iOS? Right now, not much -- both OnLive's gaming service and

Apple reported to be preparing direct sales in Russia, wanting more Macs for Moscow
Despite Russia's size, Apple has always had to sell in the country through carriers and resellers -- a pain for customers who might have to wait weeks beyond the initial launch of a device to see it in stores. If we're to believe tips from distributor insiders speaking with Kommersant, Apple wants at least some kind of first-party presence in the country. Could AT&T's blockage of FaceTime be an FCC violation?
Yesterday, TUAW noted that AT&T is planning on blocking Apple's iOS 6 FaceTime video calling app over cellular service except for those individuals who have signed up for one of the company's new "Mobile Share" plans. A few websites are now wondering aloud if AT&T's plans to proceed in that direction could be in violation of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) rules on network neutrality.

Verizon vacation ban may back September 21st iPhone launch
Verizon Wireless is blocking off vacations for all of its workers between September 21st and the 30th, according to a source in the company. Because carriers rarely institute this kind of ban, it's believed that the timeframe indicates when Apple will launch the next-generation iPhone. Tip of the Day: Using a 24-hour clock on your iOS device
While most civilians in the U.S. are perfectly happy measuring their time in 12-hour chunks, there are plenty of folks both here and abroad that prefer the more exact notation of the 24-hour clock. Luckily, iOS makes it easy to switch between the two. Simply fire up the Settings app, tap on General, tap on Date & Time, and turn on 24-Hour Time. Former employee suing Apple, says Steve Jobs promised him lifelong employment
There's really no place where you can be guaranteed lifelong employment these days, Apple included. But, it still angered former employee Wayne Goodrich, who had worked for Apple since 1998 and dismissed in December for "business reasons."
Goodrich has turned around and sued Apple, Bloomberg News reports, saying that Steve Jobs promised him a job for life during a meeting in 2005 and reaffirmed in 2010. "This express promise by Steve Jobs was consistent with a practice that Steve Jobs had of promising job security to certain key employees who worked directly with him for many years," Goodrich said in his complaint.

Dell reports Q2 earnings: rakes in $14.5 billion of revenue, nets $732 million in profit
After a couple of down quarters in a row, Dell needed to come out strong in Q2 of fiscal year 2013. Well, it's probably not as glowing a quarter as the company was hoping for, but a slight rebound in profits from last quarter should give it something to smile about. Revenue was up roughly $100 million sequentially, which translated into an equal amount of additional profit. Send a Tweet via Notification Center using this handy AppleScript
Wouldn't it be great if you could send a tweet via Notification Center's "Click to Tweet" feature without needing to take your hands off of the keyboard? Apparently Stack Exchange user Ewwis thought so, too, and he wrote up a nice little AppleScript to do so. Macworld's Kirk McElhearn, who is a fan of AppleScripting and shortcuts, highlighted this script this morning.

TomTom iOS app updates with Foursquare, Bluetooth hooks
TomTom has updated its iOS navigation app, available for a number of different regions, to v1.11. Several improvements have been made, such as Foursquare integration, which lets users find places to go via the service with or without logging in; after logging in, though, the app also lets users check in at a location. Nukotoys digital apps and physical cards available now
Back in January at CES, one of the most magical things we got to see was these new cards from Nukotoys, physical collectible cards that somehow interacted with Apple's capacitive touchscreens (probably with an invisible pattern, if I had to hazard a guess). The project seemed very cool, and Nukotoys told us that it hoped to release by year's end. They're ahead of schedule apparently, because the apps are now available on the App Store, and I'm told that the physical cards are out at retailers available to buy right now.

ePic is a compact and attractive slideshow display app for OS X
ePic is a US $3.99 OS X app for displaying photos in attractive ways. It has some realistic physics, and unlike many similar apps, you can interact with the onscreen slideshow.
To start, you point the app at an iPhoto or Aperture library, or to online sources like Picasa, Flickr, 500px or any local folder of images.

OS X 10.8.1 beta may fix MacBook battery life issues
The current beta of OS X 10.8.1 may substantially improve MacBook battery life for some users, an anonymous developer indicates. The person says that before installing v10.8.1, his MacBook was only displaying a battery life of 4 hours and 5 minutes on a full charge. Afterwards, however, that number shot up to over 8 hours, more than what Apple advertises for any MacBook model.

Dear Aunt TUAW,
I recently upgraded Lion to Mountain Lion. Such a beautiful and fluid OS. For a particular assignment, I wanted to convert a document into a PDF which Apple's Preview does it effectively.
The problem arose when I wanted to annotate a hyperlink in the PDF.
In Lion, I could do this simply by clicking Tools and then Annotate-Add a link. Apparently Mountain Lion has removed this important function!
Its like taking 3 steps forwards and 2 steps backwards. Do you know of any other cost effective/free ways of incorporating hyperlinks within the PDFs.
Adobe Acrobat is expensive!! Aunt, please help!!

German carrier announces new iPhone for September
A German phone carrier, Mobilecom Debitel, has announced that a new iPhone is coming in September. "In September, itís finally time for a new generation of smartphone to go on sale. mobilcom-debitel allows you to find free e-mail about everything worth knowing about iPhone," a translation of an announcement email reads. On a teaser page the carrier avoids using the term "iPhone," but does refer to common rumors about the upcoming refresh, such as it getting faster processors, 1GB of RAM, and a 4-inch display with an in-cell touchscreen.

Briefly: Remote Desktop security fix, Skype for iOS updates
Apple has released a security update for its Remote Desktop application, which addresses a problem with data encryption. According to Apple the previous release would fail to properly encrypt data when connected to third-party VNC servers, even with the "Encrypt all network data" setting enabled. In addition, the software also failed to provide a warning when the connection was insecure. Version 3.6.1 resolves the problem by creating an SSH tunnel for the connection, and preventing the connection if this tunnel cannot be created. The Verge is reporting that today's a big day in the UK mobile market. The UK regulator of telecommunications, Ofcom, granted approval for carrier Everything Everywhere to roll out 4G LTE service in the UK on its 1800 MHz spectrum before the official 4G auction that is expected next year.

FCC report says 19 million americans still without broadband access
The FCC believes that 19 million Americans don't have access to broadband, defined as internet access at a speed of 4 megabits per second or more. Understandably, rural areas are the worst hit, with 14.5 million out in the sticks without access, with areas like West Virginia lacking coverage for 45.9 percent of its population. Samsung to spend $4B on overhauling Austin chip plant
Samsung has announced that it will spend roughly $4 billion overhauling its chip manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas, Reuters reports. The company plans to renovate is current production line there and boost system chip production. Apple - Samsung 'peace talks' go nowhere; jury starts deliberating tomorrow
Yesterday TUAW reported that Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung chief Kwon Oh Hyun were going to have a phone conversation to fulfill a request from Judge Lucy Koh and hopefully make some headway in their patent dispute. Ex-Apple worker sues over Jobs' promise of job security
A former Apple worker -- Wayne Goodrich -- is suing the company over breach of contract and unfair business practices, claiming Apple co-founder Steve Jobs promised him he would always have a job, Bloomberg reports. In a complaint filed with the California state court in San Jose, Goodrich says he was fired in December for what Apple said were "business reasons" unrelated to his performance. Goodrich describes himself as a confidant and close adviser to Jobs, and someone who worked under him from 1998 until Jobs' retirement and death in late 2011.

Discovery Bay Games raises $15M for iOS "Appcessories"
Seattle-based Discovery Bay Games, a board game company turned iOS accessory maker, announced today it has raised $15 million in Series B funding, according to a report in TechCrunch. If your favorite audio or video broadcasts are spamming you with obnoxious ads (or anything else you don't like) an Apple patent could yank them out by the roots -- then substitute your own content. First, the system would check media content in real time through audio analysis or metadata scanning. Die Jungs von iFixit zerlegen ja prinzipiell gerne Geräte, aber am liebsten solche, denen man dabei wenig Gewalt antun muss, weil sich ihre Komponenten einfach abschrauben oder irgendwie anders regulär ausbauen lassen. Und diesbezüglich waren die Bastler von Samsungs Galaxy Note 10.1 begeistert, denn hier lassen sich jede Menge Teile ohne Rumgewürge austauschen, sogar das Abdeckglas über dem Touchscreen. Wie The Moscow News berichtet, wird Apple die eigenen Produkte ab 2013 auch in Russland selbst verkaufen. Auch erste Apple Stores seien geplant. Public Knowledge blasts AT&T over FaceTime network limits
One of the new features in Apple's iOS6 release due this fall is an enhancement to the FaceTime video call feature, allowing it to function on any cellular network. Friday, AT&T announced that the privilege only extends to users on its new "Mobile Share" programs, and not for users grandfathered on the unlimited or tiered data plans. Public Knowledge, a nonprofit Internet law group, believes that preventing other customers from using FaceTime violates net neutrality rules by blocking a service that competes with its own.

Apple details claims against Galaxy Nexus in appeals court

Daily iPad App: Puzzle Craft is puzzle farming bliss
I came to a realization a little while ago: I love grindy games. I really enjoy games with a certain amount of repetition to them, games where I slowly but steadily build up resources and a character (or an empire) while performing somewhat mindless but infinitely amusing tasks. Puzzle Craft fits right in that category -- like that other great puzzle/RPG mashup, Puzzle Quest (as well as the recent 10000000), it provides a solid and rewarding system of progression to a fairly basic but amusing puzzle system.

Nielsen: Android, Sharp, Apple tops in Japan

Apple stock hits record value, beats Microsoft's 1999 peak
Apple stock on Monday continued to climb, reaching a market capitalization of $623.5 billion and setting an all-time record for company value on a public exchange. Plants vs Zombies 2 coming next year
PopCap has made an announcement that will be music to the ears of flower-planting undead fighters everywhere: Plants vs. Zombies is getting a sequel, due in spring 2013. Unfortunately, no details have been announced yet; PopCap says that the game will have "new features, settings, and situations" but that's about it. That's probably not a problem, however, as fans will probably be happy with any new PvZ content they can play.

Details emerge about Motorola's ITC complaint against Apple
Fresh details have emerged in Motorola Mobility's latest US International Trade Commission complaint, the latest escalation in the company's patent war with Apple. The new complaint was filed by attorneys at Quinn Emanuel, the firm that previously represented the Google-owned company and is currently representing Samsung in separate battles with Apple. Apple expands Canadian retail stores with Halifax, Coquitlam

Fleksy is an alternate text input tool for the visually impaired
Fleksy is an interesting take on alternate text input for the iPhone. Designed for those whose eyesight is bad or nonexistent, Fleksy records the taps on the screen and makes a guess based on your patterns. It then says the word, enabling you to quickly construct sentences without even looking at the screen. Does it work? Absolutely it does, and as proof I found it was far more accurate when I didn't look at the screen than when I tried to type quickly while looking at the "keys."
Fleksy is simple enough, with a text area up top and modified keyboard below. As you type, it guesses what you're trying to type. When you go to the next word by swiping right, Fleksy reads the word it guessed, allowing you to delete it (swipe left to delet
