Set up Mountain Lion's text expansion options
Lifehacker has a simple look at how to set up Mountain Lion's built-in text expansion (or, as Apple calls it, "substitution") options. In System Preferences, under Language and Text, you can go in and set up any number of text shortcuts that will expand into commonly-used phrases and words.
There are a few built-in already -- typing "(c)", for example, will give you a copyright symbol. But you can put anything in there, so you can use a few quick keys to punch out your email address or phone number, or use some other phrase for anything you happen to type often.

NPD: Xbox 360 ruled a steadily declining video game empire in July
Microsoft must sometimes feel like its lead in the game market is a Pyrrhic victory. The Xbox 360 once again topped the NPD Group's hardware charts in July, claiming a near-majority 49 percent market share of consoles -- but the 203,000 units sold were a steep drop from the 257,000 units that traded hands in June, and a far cry from the glory days that would have given a victory more meaning. Photos show alleged dock connector plug for iPhone 5
French website Nowherelse.fr has uncovered what are said to be some of the first photos of the actual plug for Apple's new dock connector format. In the past, only images of matching ports on next-generation iPhone parts have been leaked. The plug is smaller than the current Apple format for portable devices, and in fact much narrower than a regular USB plug, closer to micro- or mini-USB. The images are believed to have been found on a Chinese-language site.

13-inch Retina MacBook Pro shows up in Benchmarks
Adding to prior evidence that a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro is in the offing, a new model of the high-resolution MacBook has shown up in another set of online benchmarks. As Mac Rumors details, the new model bears many of the same specs as the model spotted earlier this year, but with a few key differences. Google to downrank sites hit by valid copyright claims
Google has been dogged by claims that it facilitates the piracy of content through its search results pretty much since day one. Starting next week, the web giant will be taking a much more aggressive approach to sites hosting pirated material by downranking frequent offenders. The new results algorithm will take into account the number of valid copyright notices received against a site and penalize them appropriately in the rankings. Digiboo movie kiosks now do wireless, still insist on Windows
So far, Digiboo's movie kiosks have been severely limited by a couple of factors, before you even get to the fact that their content is SD only. Firstly, they've required users to carry a USB stick on their person, and secondly they've only been able to transfer rentals to a Windows device. Today, however, the company has cleared a major hurdle on its passage to relevance, by allowing wireless transfers to any "Windows-enabled PC, laptop or tablet." This should make Digiboo's next step -- Android support, which is promised to come this month -- a whole lot easier.

Briefly: Verizon tops, Spotify likes, Michael Jackson
Verizon Wireless once again claimed the top spot among US carriers in terms of customer loyalty. The company reported today that its second quarter churn rate was 0.84 percent. Verizon edged out the unnamed second place finisher, which tallied a 0.97 percent churn rate. Third and fourth place carriers saw churn rates of 1.79 and 2.1 percent. Churn measures the percentage of customers who leave their wireless providers in a given period. Verizon's churn figures represent only wireless customers with postpaid contracts.

Here's a quick way to browse Calendar events (I still want to say "iCal") in the Finder with Spotlight. Simply enter your search keyword into Spotlight. The results are sorted by type, as usual.
Move your cursor over a matching Calendar result and a pop-up appears, showing the event's placement in Calendar, as well as other surrounding events from the day. Click any event in this pop-up window to jump right to it in Calendar.
Note that this works with iCal in Lion as well as Calendar.app in Mountai

BlackBerry PlayBook: Neue Chancen bei der kanadischen Polizei

Es mag hierzulande eher als Exoten-Tablet gehandelt werden, aber BlackBerry gibt sein Playbook nicht auf. Es gibt eine neue 4G LTE Version in Amerika (siehe Galerie) und im Heimatland wird jetzt eine Polizei-App-Suite vorgestellt, die den Einsatz des Gerätes im Steifenwagen erlaubt und Zugriff auf alle Datenbanken der heimischen Polizei erlaubt. Mal sehen ob die Demo erfolgreich ist, und wir das Playbook demnächst in diversen US-Polizei-Serien sehen, die ja gerne jenseits der Grenzen gedreht werden.

The high-stakes Apple versus Samsung court battle taking place in the Northern District of California has seen highly confidential sales figures (pdf) for the US market released. Although Apple, unlike Samsung, has always reported actual units sold on to end-users, these have only ever been global sales figures that have never been broken down by region. Alibaba: Yahoo will seine 5 Milliarden Dollar lieber selber ausgeben
Yahoo-Chefin Marissa Mayer hat erklären lassen, dass der Milliardengewinn aus dem Yahoo hat erklärt, dass es seinen Plan überprüfen will, die Anteile des Unternehmens an Alibaba zu verkaufen und den Erlös in Höhe von 5 Milliarden US-Dollar an die Aktionäre auszuschütten. Das geht aus einer Pflichtmitteilung des Internetunternehmens an die US-Börsenaufsicht SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) hervor. Offenbar hat die neue Yahoo-Chefin Marissa Mayer vor, das Geld für Übernahmen einzusetzen. "Diese Überprüfung kann zu einer Neubewertung oder Änderungen bei unseren derzeitigen Plänen führen", schrieb das Unternehmen in der Mitteilung. Im Mai 2012 hatte Interimschef Ross Levinsohn am Abschluss des Plans gearbeitet, nachdem der chinesische Internetkonzern Alibaba 20 Prozent seiner Anteile für 6,3 Milliarden US-Dollar in bar und 800 Millionen US-Dollar in Aktien von Yahoo zurückkauft. iPhone 5: Gerüchte um längeres iPhone verdichten sich mit füfter App-Row und schmaler Batterie

Dieses Mal sind es keine Zeichnungen, Zulieferer, Hüllen oder vermeintliche Cases oder Einzelteile mehr, sondern die Nachricht kommt direkt aus dem iOS 6 Simulator. 5 Reihen statt bislang vier soll es auf dem neuen iPhone geben und damit wäre der Screen entschieden mehr Wide-Screen. Einen weiteren Hinweis gibt es durch ein Bild einer Batterie, das auch entschieden länger wirkt und vor allem Dünner sein müsste, als bislang. Die größere Kapazität würde auch auf das lang erwartete LTE hindeuten, alles andere wäre aber auch wirklich ein Desaster für Apple. Bild der Batterie nach dem Break.

Die Gerüchte und Bilder der letzten Wochen und Monate lassen keinen Zweifel daran, dass das kommende iPhone nicht nur im Funktionsumfang, sondern auch physisch in die Länge wachsen wird. Nicht 640 x 960 Bildpunkte, sondern 640 x 1136 Bildpunkte würde die Displayauflösung in diesem Fall betragen.

Some internal configuration files that reveal a list of Macs that support flash drive or USB booting in Mountain Lion may have inadvertently tipped Apple's hand on future iMac and Mac Pro configurations. WordPress iOS app update brings new UI, features
Talk about timing! Just yesterday, Mike Rose and I were talking about blogging tools on TUAW TV Live and had a discussion about the WordPress iOS app. Today, the WordPress team shipped an update to the iOS app that changes the user interface and adds features that should help power users with multiple WP sites get more work done while mobile.
Version 3.1 of the free WordPress app brings a new look to the universal application. HP brings AirPrint, ePrint to Photosmart 7520, 6520 printers
HP has introduced two all-in-one printers with remote printing, each aimed at students going back to school or college. Both the Photosmart 7520 and Photosmart 6520 use HP's ePrint technology for remotely printing from any web-connected device, Apple's AirPrint through any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch; as well as printing locally through USB and Wi-Fi.

Westfield app updated, now with Concierge Voice Control
The official Westfield mall app (if you're in America, there's probably a Westfield mall near you -- near me in LA, there's like eight of them) has been updated, and for a mall app, it's pretty powerful. In addition to maps and directories of all of the Westfield Malls around, there's now features included like turn-by-turn directions in the mall, search not only of stores but also of products, dining, and events, and even OpenTable and MovieTickets.com integration, so you can make reservations or buy movie tickets from right inside the app.

iOS 6 Beta: Wi-Fi und Cellular verspricht bessere Verbindungen
Nach der Veröffentlichung der vierten iOS-6-Beta werden weiterhin bislang unbekannte Funktionen entdeckt.

CM9's first stable release lands for GSM Galaxy Nexus
Well, it's certainly taken a while, but the popular CyanogenMod finally has a stable version of its ninth iteration. It's yet to hit the ROM's homepage, but that's probably because its only available for the GSM Galaxy Nexus at the moment.
