Apple SVP Eddy Cue wanted 7-inch iPad in 2011, internal email says
During today's proceedings at the Apple vs. Samsung patent infringement trial in Northern California, an internal Apple email came to light, where Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue suggested that the company manufacture a 7-inch tablet, anticipating a market for a smaller slate. Apple updates Apple Store app with software pre-install options
Apple's Apple Store app for the iPhone was recently updated with a new feature that'll let customers order a new Mac with the iWork applications pre-installed.
New Macs usually ship with the iLife suite of apps installed for free, but now customers using their iPhone to make a purchase can choose to add iWork apps like Pages, Numbers and Keynote to their Mac for US$20 each.

Verizon survey reveals FiOS Companion Android tablet, aka the Motorola Corvair
While it hasn't actually started to roll out yet, one of our readers sent in pics of a Verizon FiOS survey gauging reactions to a new device that "may be available in the future" as the FiOS Companion tablet. HTC revenues down 27%, blames competition

Apple fired another salvo in the ongoing patent struggle between the iPhone maker and Samsung, alleging that exhibits Samsung plans to submit for cross-examination are produced in a manner that deliberately obscures the South Korean company's imitation of Apple's designs. Schiller testifies, says Apple considered car and a camera, and Samsung's phone's a 'rip off'
Apple's Phil Schiller took the stand this afternoon in Apple's ongoing case with Samsung in a California court. He revealed a few hints at Apple's iPhone development and took some solid shots at Samsung.
In terms of Apple history, Schiller revealed that, before Apple began exploring the world of smartphones, it considered making a camera or a car. I'd love to see Apple make either one of those things, but of course they went with a cellphone, and the iPhone is that product.

AT&T plans to shut down entire 2G network by 2017

Propellerhead updates Figure iOS app with new features
Last March, Propellerhead released Figure for iOS. Figure is a music creation app designed with much of the synth power of Propellerhead's flagship Reason software, like Kong Drum designer and Thor polyphonic synthesizer.
The first iteration of Figure was very well received, especially at just US$1. Designed to be easy to use (even for those with no musical inclination) and loads of fun, Figure quickly became my go-to app for killing time on a commute (as well as filling my daily music making fix, too).

A few weeks ago I wrote an article highlighting the best London transportation apps for visitors coming to the London Olympics. In my article I divided the apps based on mode of transport: tube, bus, car, boat, and bicycle.
Shortly after the article went live I was having dinner with some old friends from Apple who were visiting the city; they told me about an app they've recently found that helps them get around London: the aptly-named London Transport. Schiller: iPhone, iPad born out of exploiting iPod success
The decision to make the iPhone and the iPad stemmed from the success of the iPod, according to Apple's senior VP for worldwide product marketing, Phil Schiller. The executive testified late yesterday as a part of the ongoing Apple v. Samsung trial in California. iPhone 5 panel shows mix of bigger, smaller dimensions
Although its screen size has grown, some other dimensions of the next iPhone have shrunk, according to ETrade Supply. The firm recently conducted measurements of what it claims is a front panel for the iPhone 5; it notes that the upcoming phone's screen should measure about 4.065 inches, versus 3.61 inches on the iPhone 4S. The panel is about 0.1mm thinner, though, and the Home button has shrunk by about 0.3mm. The area around the Home button has been reduced from 18mm to 15.4mm, and a similar reduction has taken place with the area around the earpiece.

IDC: Apple extends lead in tablet market
In a bit of news that should surprise almost nobody, IDC & Macworld reported on Thursday that Apple has increased its market share of units shipped in the tablet market to almost 70 percent worldwide.
By the numbers, Apple shipped a total of 17 million iPads in the April to June quarter of 2012, boosting its market share from 61.5 percent for the same quarter of 2011 to 68.2 percent this year. In that quarter of 2011, Apple shipped 9.24 million iPads, so a year over year comparison shows a growth of 84.3 percent.
According to IDC, the majority of consumers favor the iPad over competing tablets, and Apple also gets the nod in vertical mark

Dan Chung photographs the Olympics using an iPhone, Snapseed and some binoculars
When you think of professional photographers shooting sporting events, you usually visualize huge Canon or Nikon lenses mounted on expensive camera bodies on top of massive tripods. But as The Guardian's photographer Dan Chung proves, sometimes you can do just as much with a lot less. Throughout the Olympics Chung is photographing the games using only an iPhone, an app, and (occasionally) an add-on iPhone lens or some binoculars.

AT&T to migrate to iPad-based point-of-sales system
AT&T will soon start switching to an iPad-based point-of-sale system at its retail stores, 9to5Mac reports. Currently the carrier relies on desktop computers running software called OPUS, which handles sales tasks as well as checking inventory, corporate news, and customer upgrade status. In some regions the carrier has already tried to evolve by rolling out iPhones and tablets with scaled-back versions of OPUS; the iPhones, for instance, can only handle a few tasks like taking payments for accessories, or running basic account management.

Verizon Wireless sales staff allegedly dissing the iPhone
When Apple goes head to head with Android, it's vying not only for consumers, but also for the sales people who recommend the phones. According to Verizon customer Jeff Stern, Apple is losing that battle in at least one retail store.
Stern recounts a recent visit to his local Verizon Wireless store and mentions how the employees were down-selling the iPhone -- getting rather nasty about it, in fact. The sales associates allegedly said Apple "released the iPhone 4S because Steve Jobs died so they just threw in a couple more features and pushed it out."

Es ist zwar noch eine Zukunftsvorstellung, aber Behrokh Khoshnevis von der Universität von Southern California hat ein System entwickelt um ein Haus über einen gigantischen 3D Printer innerhalb von einem Tag nach eigenen Spezifikationen zu bauen. Strom und Wasserleitungen inklusive. Im Video nach dem Break kann man schon mal eine Animation sehen wir man sich das vorzustellen hat. Temple Run breaks 100 million downloads
There's big news from Imangi Software, the husband-and-wife team behind the breakout iOS hit Temple Run. The game has picked up 100 million downloads in within a year on the App Store.

Robot stock traders lose $440,000,000 in 45 minutes, need someone to spell it out
Humans never learn and apparently neither do robots. Autonomous trading AIs went on a spending spree at Knight Capital Group in New Jersey this week, buying up shares in everything from RadioShack to Ford and American Airlines (ouch) in a 45-minute frenzy of disobedience. Am 16. August soll Xiaome, der Chinesische Startup, sein Phone 2 präsentieren, und wie man hört könnte es das erste mit dem neuen Qualcomm QuadCore APQ8064 Chip mit 1,5GHz werden. Patentkrieg: Apple fordert Sanktionen für Samsung wegen Präsentations-Veröffentlichung
Neues vom Patentkrieg: Samsungs Entscheidung, eine vom Gericht nicht zugelassene Präsentation über die Presse an die Öffentlichkeit zu bringen, könnte für die Koreaner ernst Konsequenzen haben. Zumindest fordert Apple diese ein: Apple möchte, dass das Gericht der eigenen Klage als Sanktion für Samsung stattgibt.
Es ist eines der wichtigsten Gerichtsverfahren im Patentkrieg: Apple hat Samsung vor dem Gericht in Kalifornien bereits im letzten Jahr wegen mutmaßlicher Verletzung der eigenen Design-Rechte verklagt. Apple wirft Samsung vor, das Design des iPhone und iPad absichtlich kopiert zu haben. Sollte das Gericht Apples Klage stattgeben, könnte das eine Signalwirkung für andere Verfahren haben.

Eben erst im vergangenen Herbst eröffnete Google ein gigantisches Rechenzentrum in Finnland - und schon jetzt plant der Konzern eine Erweiterung. Sie soll 150 Millionen kosten und die Kapazität des Rechenzentrums verdoppeln. Es ist eine ungewöhnliche Serverfarm: Für das Projekt baute Google eine Papierfabrik aus den 50ern um, und zur Kühlung der dort installierten Computer wird Wasser aus dem Finnischen Meerbusen durch Tunnel der alten Anlage gepumpt. Dropped calls, slow download speeds rank among top gripes of mobile users
Everyone has an opinion, and if they all stink, then Pew must have one hell of a tolerance for foul odors. The research group recently surveyed a number of mobile phone owners to determine their primary complaints, and while it's not much of a surprise, slow network performance stole the show. In all, 77 percent aired at least some dissatisfaction with download speeds, and nearly half of all respondents cited frequent frustration. Samsung avoids lawsuit dismissal over evidence disclosure
Late Thursday, Judge Lucy Koh denied an Apple motion requesting the court declare the iPhone manufacturer the victor in the contentious smartphone patent trial currently underway in the US District Court of California. Judge blocks Apple on two patent claims against Kodak
US Bankruptcy Court Judge Allan Gropper has ruled that Apple does not own two of the 10 imaging patents the company was claiming in a dispute between the iPhone maker and the troubled photography pioneer. Evernote updates Mac client, offers LinkedIn sharing, more
Evernote has updated its self-titled cloud-based note and capture program for the Mac to version 3.3, adding a new Premium user feature, new keyboard commands, new user controls and the addition of optional LinkedIn sharing. Apple moves for summary judgement sanctions against Samsung
Saying "Samsung apparently believes that it is above the law, and that it -- not this Court -- should decide what evidence the jury should see," Apple has petitioned the US District Court hearing its case against Samsung to impose a severe sanction on the South Korean smartphone maker for its stunt of releasing to the press (with an obvious intent of influencing the jury) evidence that was barred from the trial for being inaccurate.

The day before the Apple versus Samsung court battle begins anew, Judge Lucy Koh entered her order on three motions from Samsung, ruling against the South Korean manufacturer in every regard. Aereo updates charging for New York service, adds tiers
Online television rebroadcaster Aereo has updated its pricing from its original $12 per month flat rate. The new charges for the service includes a free trial, granting residents of New York one hour of viewing a day, and a number of different tiers. Facebook 'sponsored stories' settlement in jeopardy
US District Judge Richard Seeborg said he has "significant concerns" about a proposed legal settlement with Facebook accusing the social media site of violating the rights of its members through the "sponsored stories" feature. Facebook is slated to pay $20 million to lawyers and charities as part of the settlement. In an effort to convince the judge that the package is a good value for the plaintiffs, Facebook attorneys claim that the settlement payout plus changes to privacy settings represent $123 million in value to the suing class and Facebook users.

Way back in the cold month of January, TUAW reviewed the Lantronix xPrintServer, a US$149.95 intelligent print server designed to put networked printers in reach of iOS devices. Macworld | iWorld Asia event begins in Beijing
The second annual Macworld | iWorld Asia event has begun in Beijing this week. IDG has hosted the conference twice now to serve the growing number of Mac, iPhone, and iPad users in China. It sounds a lot like San Francisco's version of Macworld | iWorld, with dev conferences, a big keynote event, and an open exhibition floor, with exhibitors like LaCie, Macally, and Logitech showing their wares.
