Pew Research finds 22 percent of adults in US own tablets, low-cost Android on the rise

TDK breaks the Hard Drive density limit, could go on to develop super-sized storage
While the old-fashioned hard drive isn't as fast or slender as an SSD, it can still lord its greater capacities and cheaper price over its upstart rival. TDK thinks it's extended the mediums lead in that area by tweaking the magnetic heads and recording medium of the hardware -- increasing the areal density of a unit to 1.5 TB per square inch. Motorola withdraws ITC complaint against Apple
Motorola Mobility was withdrawn the entirety of its second International Trade Commission complaint against Apple, says FOSS Patents. The move is unexpected, and Motorola provides no explanation for the decision in an official filing. The company says it wants to "terminate all claims in this investigation without prejudice based on Motorola's withdrawal of the complaint, with Motorola and Apple each bearing their own costs and attorneys' fees."

Pew poll puts Android at 48 percent of 2012 tablet market
Apple's dominance of the tablet market may be on the wan, as Android-based tablets are said to make up nearly half the market. This according to a Pew poll out recently showing that, among US tablet owners, 48 percent own a tablet running some version of Google's Android operating system. This latest figure represents a considerable loosening of Apple's grip on the tablet sector, and it does not yet take into account a number of other devices that may loosen that grip even more.

Fujitsu demos ad transmission technology, sends info from TV to handset via smartphone camera (video)
Another easter egg at Fujitsu's CEATEC booth was a system for transmitting coupons, URLs and other digital information from a TV screen to a user's smartphone. We'll back up a bit: the data ends up on-screen in the first place thanks to information embedded in light flashing at various levels of brightness (the frame rate is too quick to be detected by the human eye). Theoretically, when a viewer is watching a commercial, they'll see a prompt to hold up their phone's camera to the screen, and doing so will bring up a corresponding coupon or website on their handset. eBay UK launches Secretguru beta site, helps you find experts to get stuff done
Granted, the name sounds a bit questionable, but Secretguru wants to help you make your life a little better. Still in an early beta pilot testing stage, the site was launched by a wing of Ebay's UK staff in attempts to set professionals up with clients, from chefs to painters to vocal coaches to tour guides. The site has hand-picked a list of "gurus" that you can peruse and hire, and those interested in being named a guru can submit an application for consideration. YouMail updates, now allows 'numberless messaging'
We covered YouMail back in February of last year -- it's a voicemail replacement app for iOS, which allows you to access and send voicemails completely outside of the standard voicemail interface. UK carrier cooperation could see 4G LTE rollout ramp up by summer 2013

Apple Lightning connectors use authentication, source says
Apple's new Lightning connector format uses an authenticator chip to block unauthorized accessories, CNN Money says it has learned. The part is mentioned by one source said to have "knowledge of Apple's manufacturing," as well the owner of Double Helix Cables, who tore apart the new connector shortly after the iPhone 5 launch and discovered a chip in the path of the Lightning's power wire. The positioning of the chip is said to make Lightning "much more complex" than Apple's older 30-pin format.

AOC releases borderless 27-inch IPS monitor
AOC announced today the retail availability of the i2757fh, a new 27-inch IPS display with a bezel only 0.08 inches thick. First non-game titles now available on Steam, game dev tools lead the charge
Valve Software -- makers of the iconic Half-Life series, as well as proprietors of digital storefront Steam -- today released Steam's first non-video game software (original scheduled to launch in early September). Google withdraws recent ITC complaint in Motorola v. Apple case
Well, here's a bit of a surprise in the ongoing spate of Apple-focused patent disputes. Google's Motorola Mobility subsidiary has now formally withdrawn its most recent complaint against Apple with the ITC, which was just filed on August 17th and had been, until now, under investigation. Not surprisingly, details are light beyond that, with Google's filing only stating that it asked the ITC to "terminate all claims in this investigation without prejudice," and adding that "there are no agreements between Motorola and Apple, written or oral, express or implied, concerning the subject matter of this investigation." Steve Jobs' former friends, colleagues share memories
As we approach the first anniversary of Steve Jobs' passing, former friends and colleagues are sharing memories of time spent with Apple's former CEO. Several of those stories will appear in the October 22, 2012 issue of Forbes magazine.
One amusing tale comes from Randy Adams, who worked with Jobs at NeXT. The pair had bought Porsche 911s and always parked them side-by-side. One day Adams received a phone call from Jobs, telling him they had to move their cars. LinkedIn branches out with new blogging and 'following' features for select group
LinkedIn has always been based on the notion of "connections" rather than "followers," but the social network has made a bit of a break with that tradition today. Rumors of an Apple event in October
Over the summer we heard all about the upcoming iPhone 5, but that was to be expected. The rumored "iPad mini," however, has been much harder to spot by wayward components. Still, the stars appear to be aligning for an October Apple event.

Apple wins patents on wireless adapter, touch mouse
Apple was won a pair of new patents through the US Patent and Trademark Office. The more significant of the two may be Wireless adapter for interfacing between an accessory and a device. AppleInsider notes that the patent is actually a continuation of one from 2008 simply called Adapter, but describes a more modern implementation that would let media players connect to accessories through a special wireless receiver, whether attached directly to the accessory or sitting separately. The adapter could even adjust to incompatibilities with protocols such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

Rogers rolls out LTE in 18 new Canadian markets
Rogers has expanded its LTE coverage in Canada by 18 new markets. Previously promised in July, the expansion sees the carrier's LTE network grow enough to cover 60-percent of the Canadian population, only months into its second year of deployment in the country. EU Digital Commissioner requests better European 4G Rollout
Apple and other device makers keep upping the ante on speed by building support for LTE into their latest devices, but that's of little use to citizens of several countries of the European Union. In many cases, their countries have no 4G networks or operate on frequencies not currently supported by the latest iPhone or iPad. Today, the EU's Commissioner for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes called for EU member nations to support a plan to invest funds in 4G network expansion and improvement.

Samsung sues Apple over iPhone 5
As promised, Samsung has filed a lawsuit against Apple's iPhone 5. In a statement cited by Reuters, Samsung said, "we have little choice but to take the steps necessary to protect our innovations and intellectual property rights."

Productions yields of in-cell touchscreens for the iPhone 5 are improving, and imposing less of a burden on manufacturing the phone, according to Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu, citing supply chain checks. The screens have regularly been blamed for Apple's inability to keep up with demand. Now, however, the main issue is said to be just the complexity of building the 5, since the product is extremely minimalist and cased in aluminum and glass. Another prototype from DoCoMo aimed at Nihon's commuters, the i beam concept tablet forgoes any touch at all, allowing the user (once they're at the specified 'sweet spot') to navigate around apps and screens using your eyes. We're generally not fond of folio-style iPhone cases, but Simplism's Flip Note Style ($30) and Vertical Flip Style ($30) are two iPhone 5 designs that at least deserve a mention. In a sort of reverse-Project Glass, one of DoCoMo's latest prototypes flips its cameras back at the wearer. Duo Games reveals Gameloft-branded iOS controller, coming very soon
iOS publisher Gameloft has teamed up with Duo Games to make a Bluetooth-powered controller for iOS games, called the Duo Gamer controller. As you can see above, the controller comes with a tablet stand for your iPad. It features a d-pad and four buttons (as is pretty standard for these sorts of things), plus two analog sticks for FPS look/shoot movement or anything else developers want to use them for.

Der Effekt tritt bei Gegenlichtaufnahmen einer hellen Lichtquelle auf und hat schon diverse poetische Namen bekommen: von "Purple Haze" über "The Hendrix Effect" bis hin zu "Purplegate". Etwas absurd wird dann aber der Tip vom Support-Team noch, das empfiehlt, einfach nicht direkt die Sonne zu fotografieren.

AAPL stock buyback program begins, $10B to be repurchased
As previously announced back in March, Apple has now launched its plan to buy back some $10 billion in stock as a way to offset the shares it has awarded to executives and senior personnel. The purchase plan spans three years and, although technically underway, is controlled by the discretion of the board, which will determine the best times in the coming 36 months in which to buy stock and in what quantities. Apple kills off Ping music service, Chomp app search website
Apple used the end of its fiscal year yesterday to kill off two services; one it had created itself, the other it bought from outside the company. As previously announced, music social service Ping has been completely removed from iTunes through a silent update. The social service launched in 2010 but a failed attempt to integrate Facebook made users avoid it, and it languished despite the addition of Twitter integration later on. Preliminary injunction against Galaxy Tab 10.1 dissolved
Judge Lucy Koh of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California has agreed with one of Samsung's post-trial filings from last week and has lifted the preliminary injunction against the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The ruling marks the first post-trial motion to be completed for either side. Apple has filed for a permanent injunction based on infringement of other patents, so the matter may not be completely resolved in either direction until the December 6 hearing.

Apple to announce fiscal 2012 earnings on October 25
Due to Apple's fiscal year ending on September 30, the company will announce both Q4 and overall 2012 sales and revenue figures on Thursday, October 25 in a conference call with analysts that will as usual be streamed live over the Internet. The company's results for the year will include the latest sales figures on the 2012 iPad, the slowly-increasing Mac line helped by the recent refresh of portable models, and the first full week of iPhone 5 sales in at least nine countries.

Sharp's new 443 ppi 5-inch smartphone displays on show at CEATEC 2012 (eyes-on)
Here at CEATEC, the Japanese display maker is showing of its latest portable displays. Although the vivid 1080p displays were scurried away in the corner of Sharp's stand, we managed to grab a few photos of its 443 PPI smartphone screen yet. From these prototype samples (the screen will go into production later this month) the screen is looking pretty good, with Sharp's thinnest GS-Silicon technology reducing the layers between the LCD display and our eyes. Apple sued by software developer Ameranth over Passbook
Apple's Passbook technology has come under legal attack by hospitality software solutions purveyor Ameranth. The developer is asserting four patents against Apple claiming that Apple is fully aware of the existence of the patents. The suit seeks triple damages for willful infringement, associated fees, and any other relief that the court "may deem just and proper."

Apple updates iPhoto, runs customer survey on it
Having issued a similar update for Aperture over the weekend, Apple on Monday updated iPhoto to version 9.4.1, which likewise acts as a general bug-fix update that improves the reliability of syncing with iOS devices through iTunes and also addresses issues with downloading and viewing photos synced with a Facebook album. In a related development, MacNN has learned that Apple is surveying customers on their use (or lack of use) of various features in iPhoto, including the ability to buy printed products.

Tim Cook offers extended Thanksgiving break to Apple employees
It should be a happier Thanksgiving holiday this year for Apple employees. Once again Apple CEO Tim Cook has let team members know that they've had a great year and that they can take the entire Thanksgiving week off in the US to spend more time with their families.
That time off will be with pay; Apple retail store employees will have to juggle schedules to keep the stores staffed during the busy holiday shopping time, so they'll take their extra three days at another time; likewise with international employees.
In his letter to the staff Cook said:
"Apple is having another incredibly successful year, thanks to all of the hard work by you and your teams. Your focus and dedication to making the best products on earth is what makes Apple such an incredible place."

Apple Q4 earnings call scheduled for October 25
Yesterday was the end of Apple's 2012 fiscal year, and today the company announced that it will hold its 4th quarter earnings call on Thursday, October 25 at 5 PM ET.
The call will be the first real indication of how the iPhone 5 is doing in the market. As usual, TUAW will offer a liveblog of the earnings call, so stay tuned for further information about how to join our staff for insight into the numbers as they're announced.

Daily iPhone App: Rayman Jungle Run
Rayman Jungle Run is the kind of iOS game that should be terrible. It looks from the outset like a blatant cash grab by Ubisoft, re-using the various sounds, graphics, and gameplay from its popular Rayman Origins console platformer on iOS. But here's the thing: Rayman Origins is such a gorgeous and well-designed game that even this small-screen re-imagining is oozing with magic and fun. Yes, these graphics are being re-used, but they are still completely beautiful, and there's been so much new craft put into creating these levels and settings that Rayman Jungle Run feels just as fresh and enjoyable as the original console title.

Jorno Kickstarter project aims to put a folding Bluetooth keyboard in your pocket
Back in the days of Palm, I recall being thrilled about some of the folding keyboards that were developed for the iconic PDA. They connected to the Palm device via a mechanical connector and made it easy to type text into Palm applications. Now a California company, Jorno, is seeking funding for a pocket-sized folding Bluetooth keyboard to work with your iPhone, iPad or Android device.
The project currently has reached almost 58 percent of its required funding with 15 days to go, and the company has provided some incentives to reach the necessary US$100,000 goal by October 17, 2012.
