YouTube gains translated caption support, tears down another language barrier

Notification Hacking with Scheduled Notifications utility
A while back, Matt Gemmell wrote a great little $3 utility called Sticky Notifications that merged Mountain Lion's notification center with sticky notes. It allows you to pin reminders to your desktop.
Now, Jeremy Tregunna has released a time-triggered twist on the idea. His Scheduled Notifications utility lets you specify when you want to be pinged.
"I was using sticky notifications to remind myself to do a couple things at a time," he writes, "These were things which i didn't need to do now, but in 10 or 30 minutes. They were eating up space on my screen and covering my inspector panels in Xcode."

Foxconn: production to resume tomorrow
Following riots that shut down one of its facilities, Apple supplier Foxconn has claimed that the affected facility will return to production tomorrow. The Chinese company told CNet that the riot, which involved around 2,000 people, had resulted in no deaths and was now under control. Foxconn even disputes the "riot" nomenclature, preferring instead to refer to what happened at its Taiyuan factory as an "incident."

Apple expects to launch its Personal Pickup service for iPhone 5 at 10 p.m. tonight, according to reports. Customers can purchase an iPhone 5 online, then pick up the phone the next day when an Apple retail store receives inventory. Apple TV: Software-Update auf Version 5.1 verfügbar
Erst in der vergangenen Woche veröffentlichte Apple mit iOS 6 das Betriebssystem-Update für iPhone, iPad und iPod touch. Heute folgte das letzte iOS-Gerät aus Apples Portfolio: Apple TV kann nun auf Version 5.1 aktualisiert werden und bringt unter anderem die von iOS 6 bekannten gemeinsamen Fotostreams.
Neben den Fotostreams bietet der kleine schwarze Hockey-Puck mit der neuen Software aber auch die Möglichkeit, selbst als AirPlay-Sender und nicht mehr nur -Empfänger genutzt werden. Damit lassen sich Audiostreams an AirPlay-kompatible Lautsprecher oder andere Apple TV geschickt werden.

Imaging quality site DisplayMate has conducted a test comparing the iPhone 5's new larger display against that of the iPhone 4 and Samsung's Galaxy S III. DisplayMate ran a series of mobile display tests on the three phones, finding that the iPhone 5 has a much better display than the iPhone 4. The new iPhone's screen makes for better outdoor viewing and bests the iPhone 4 in all areas save viewing angle and brightness decrease. US Apple Stores start Personal Pickups for iPhone 5
Apple is opening up US Personal Pickup reservations for the iPhone 5 starting at 10PM Monday, according to AppleInsider. The option will let people buy an iPhone 5 online, but pick up their order from a physical Apple Store the next day. Apple is said to have briefed workers on its plans earlier today; to make a reservation, people will have to go to the iPhone 5 page at the company's website.

Don't forget to change your Blizzard Authenticator with your new iPhone
Apple has made switching over your iPhone when you buy a new one very easy, but there's one other task you may need to undertake, especially if you're one of the many players of the popular World of Warcraft game out there (or Diablo 3, or Starcraft 2, or other other Blizzard games): You'll need to switch your Blizzard mobile authenticator app over to your new device. Tip: Making ITPC links work with the official Podcasts app
My iPhone 5 arrived last Friday, and because my old iPhone 4 had gotten so cluttered with apps, I decided that instead of restoring from an old backup, I would go ahead and just start over completely.
Most of my important documents and logins are all stored in iCloud, so it wasn't a big problem to start from scratch. Doing so will allow me to cut back down on apps, making sure I only install the ones I'll use (at least to begin with). But one issue did present itself: Because I decided to no longer sync with my iTunes install on my Mac, I had to re-subscribe to all of my podcasts manually in Apple's new Podcasts app.
Most of those weren't an issue -- I mostly listen to famous podcasts like Adam Carolla's show and the

Apple TV 5.1 firmware adds multiple accounts, other changes
Apple has released a major firmware update for second- and third-generation Apple TVs. The v5.1 upgrade implements several new features, most notably the ability to save several iTunes accounts on the same unit and switch between them. App icons can now be reordered by holding down the select button, and new advanced network options can be set via configuration profiles. People with AirPlay-compatible speakers, AirPort Express routers, and/or other Apple TVs can use AirPlay to stream audio to them.

Apple TV updated with support for Shared Photo Streams and more
Your Apple TV has an update pending. You can move up to OS 5.1 by going to Settings > General > Update Software. Today's update adds support for shared Photo Streams (a welcome new feature in iOS 6), but there's a lot more to love here.
Something I've always wanted was the ability to switch store accounts, so my kids can load up their purchases. Now you can. Verizon has no plans to re-lock iPhone 5's GSM and 3G sides
When we learned that Verizon wouldn't lock the GSM-related components of the iPhone 5, we were waiting for a "gotcha" moment. Surely the carrier would clamp down and steer us back towards its more expensive roaming plans, right? First Looks: Speck FabShell for iPhone 5
Along with many of its other cases, Speck has updated the fabric-covered FabShell ($35-$40) for iPhone 5. Pictured here in the more expensive Burton pattern, it's made of plastic with a strong back and some give around the edges. Apple TVs of the second and third-gen variety are getting update 5.1 today, which brings shared photo streaming and iTunes account switching to Apple's set-top box -- the combination of those two finally freeing parents from the potential nightmare of discovering their child's "not safe for parents" photo streams, of course. News: Apple TV updated to software version 5.1
Apple has released an update for Apple TV: version 5.1 (10A406e) follows up on the March 2012 release of Apple TV software version 5.0.
Version 5.1 adds support for Shared Photo Streams, as well as streaming audio content from the Apple TV to AirPlay speakers and AirPort Express wireless routers. More to come.

My next phone will be a Samsung, not an iPhone 5
My next phone won't be the iPhone 5 I've been dreaming of for a year; it'll be a Samsung Android handset. Why? Two words: Google Maps.

Apple to meet with SBB over iPad Clock app dispute
Representatives from Apple are set to meet with people from Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) "in coming days or weeks," according to a spokeswoman for the latter company. "There's been no agreement so far, we're going to talk about it," Patricia Claivaz tells Agence France-Presse. SBB and watchmaker Mondaine have threatened action against Apple over the new Clock app in iOS 6, arguing that the faux-analog clocks it displays are similar to a design created in 1944 by engineer Hans Hilfiker, used at stations by SBB, and later licensed to Mondaine.

Liquid Information is one of those time-saving utilities that you can't live without once you start using it. Advertised as a "Swiss Army knife of text," the OS X utility lets you select a string of text in any app and search, look up, translate, calculate and share that information quickly. All you have to do is select your text and hit command-@ to pull up the list of available actions in Liquid Information.
Keyboard shortcut gurus can get fancy with commands like "command-shift-2 r,w" which will automatically search your selected text on Wikipedia or "command-shift-2-t,e,g" which will translate your text from English to German.

iOS 6: Talking to Siri about Religion
I had no intention of broaching philosophy with Siri, as earlier today I was trying to get it to recognize "Hail State!", which BulldogsRadio tweeted would connect to University of Georgia Radio.
That didn't sound right to me, but I thought a built-in easter egg might lead to sports rankings. It did not.
Instead, I found myself drawn into a theology discussion with my iPhone. Apparently, Apple engineers have found that people ask their cell phones a lot of intriguing questions, and provided tactful responses. Screenshots of my conversation follow below. I hope you get a chuckle.

Apple hunting ex-Google Maps workers for iOS 6 help
Apple is actively recruiting people with Google Maps experience to work on the iOS 6 Maps app, a source says. The person reportedly has connections with both teams, and goes into detail, noting that Apple is specifically targeting people who are/were working on contract with Google, rather than permanently. "Many" of the prospective hires are said to be eager to join Apple, since Google Maps generally only requires minor updates while iOS 6 Maps is a new product.

First Looks: STM Opera for iPhone 5

I'm not sure the innovative Color Lake app solves any real photographic problems I have, but it sure is cool to play with and try on some of my photos taken in the desert.
Color Lake (US $1.99) adds rain, snow and water with reflections to any image in your library. You can adjust the wave height, change the weather, and manipulate its hue while keeping the image at the original resolution if you desire.
I have a lot of photos taken around Arizona and Utah, and loved the ability to create realistic looking bodies of water that accurately reflect the clouds and the mountains. It's not that I needed this functionality, but it works well and has made a few of my photos more interesting than they would have been otherwise. Of course the depiction is a complete fantasy.

Ex-MobileMe users warned of upcoming iCloud downgrades
Apple is starting to notify some ex-MobileMe users of impending downgrades to their iCloud accounts. When Apple began pushing people to transition away from MobileMe, they were given temporary 20GB iCloud accounts as an incentive. The new email memos state that unless people pay for higher-end iCloud subscriptions, their accounts will be downgraded to the free 5GB tier on September 30th. Apple had originally set a June 30th deadline, but moved the date in May.

5 Millionen verkaufte iPhone 5 in 3 Tagen
Nur drei Tage nach dem Verkaufsstart vermeldet Apple bereits 5 Millionen verkaufte iPhone 5. Zwei Millionen davon wanderte allein am ersten Tag über die Ladentheken. Zum Vergleich: Vom Samsung Galaxy S3 wurden in knapp einem Monat 6 Millionen Stück verkauft.

Verizon's iPhone 5 ships unlocked, likely thanks to FCC
When the iPhone 5 arrived on doorsteps last week, some Verizon customers were surprised to discover the handset was unlocked on international and US-friendly bands, as iDownloadBlog pointed out. This means customers can sign up for Verizon, stick an AT&T nano SIM in the phone (or chop up a conventional chip) and it'll work out of the box. Granted, it won't connect on the GSM carrier's LTE service, but it will work fine on the older network.

Seitdem es von Apple die iCloud gibt, wurde der Service von MobileMe aufgelöst. Over 5 million iPhone 5s were sold during the launch weekend, Apple has announced. "Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible," reads a prepared statement from CEO Tim Cook. "While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. First weekend iPhone 5 sales top 5 million
Apple has issued a press release announcing that the first weekend of iPhone 5 sales saw 5 million units moved. No doubt that's a stellar launch for any handset, but it falls short of some analyst expectations that predicted up to 8 million iPhone 5 sales in the first weekend. Supply constraints are likely the cause, as Apple appears to be selling every phone it can make.
Apple also announced that more than 100 million iOS devices have been updated to iOS 6 since last Wednesday.

TiVo settles patent lawsuit with Verizon for at least $250 million, is 'exploring' Redbox Instant support
While some patent lawsuits continue to drag on, the battle between TiVo and Verizon over DVR technology has come to a resolution. In exchange for cross licensing their patents and dismissing all pending litigation, the two parties have agreed Verizon will pay TiVo $100 million up front followed by recurring quarterly payments totaling $150.4 million through July 2018, as well as monthly license fees for each FiOS DVR user above certain levels. Intel confirms dual-core Medfield chip with LTE inbound
Intel has confirmed with TechCrunch that it is currently prepping a dual-core Medfield-class Atom processor for mobile devices including smartphones. The new chip will also support LTE where currently its only smartphone processor shipping in handsets is only 3G-capable. Vesteckte Kamera: Ein iPhone 5 in Amsterdam
Das neue iPhone 5 ist seit Freitag im Verkauf und bereits schon vielerorts ausverkauft. Möchte man ein iPhone 5 sein Eigen nennen, muss man aktuell bis zu 4 Wochen warten. So manch einer würde sich dementsprechend glücklich schätzen ein “verlassenes” iPhone 5 auf dem Fussweg zu finden. Pech nur wenn es festgeklebt ist.
Ein paar Stunden nach diesem “Test” war das iPhone 5 übrigens doch verschwunden. Nur die Rückseite blieb hartnäckig am Boden kleben.

iCloud: Apple warnt MobileMe-Umsteiger vor nahendem Downgrade
MobileMe-Nutzer, die während der Einführung von Apples iCloud noch einen kostenpflichtigen MobileMe-Account nutzten, erhielten im vergangenen Jahr ein kostenloses Upgrade von 20 GB auf insgesamt 25 GB. Riots at Foxconn iPhone 5 Taiyuan plant, 40 hospitalized
A mass riot of around 2,000 workers at Foxconnís Taiyun plant has resulted in at least 40 people being hospitalized, reports Reuters. The plant is said to be under lockdown with all operations ceased while Foxconn works with authorities to try and determine the cause of the riot. Athough Foxconn does not officially identify which plants produce products for Apple or other companies, workers have reported that the plant affected is in fact among those that produce the iPhone 5.

Apple fordert Verkaufsverbot in den USA und mehr Geld von Samsung
Nachdem Apple Ende August einen wichtigen Sieg im Patentstreit gegen Samsung vor dem Gericht in San Jose in Kalifornien erringen konnte, geht es nun in die nächste Runde. Neben einem dauerhaften Verkaufsverbot fordert Apple auch weitere 707 Millionen US-Dollar von seinem Konkurrenten aus Südkorea.

Eigenes Netz: Iran plant nationales, isoliertes Internet

iPhone-Fabrikant Foxconn schließt Werk nach Unruhen
Am Sonntag hat laut Foxconn ein Streit zwischen Mitarbeitern zu einer größeren Unruhe in dem chinesischen Werk geführt, welcher erst Stunden später von der Polizei beendet werden konnte. Rund 40 Personen sollen dabei verletzt worden sein, einige Mitarbeiter wurden angeblich verhaftet.

iOS6-Maps - Viel Schatten und kein Licht
Viel muss man zu den neuen Karten von iOS 6 nicht sagen: Die Bilder sprechen für sich. Ich rechne mit etlichen Jahren Arbeit, die Apple vor sich hat. Im Endeffekt sind die neuen Karten das Windows Phone 7 - too little, too late.
Innerhalb von Berlin sind die Probleme nicht katastrophal. Es fehlen viele Parks, kleine Straßen und man muss damit leben, dass man jetzt in “Schöneiche bei Berlin” lebt. Für Autofahrer wird sich nicht viel ändern. Als Fußgänger oder Radfahrer ist es allerdings durchaus störend, da Orientierungspunkte einfach fehlen. Da ändert auch die manchmal vorhandene 3D-Ansicht wenig.

Boxee's Early Access program is looking for a few good testers, dangles Cloudee preview
While Boxee's oddly shaped set-top box is still its main claim to fame, it's been testing a cloud-based video hosting / sharing service for several months in closed beta. Opera Mini 7.5 update for Android adds Smart Page for social and news updates
Opera Mini for Android has been upgraded to version 7.5, bringing with it a new "Smart Page'" feature that aggregates social media updates and news from your most frequently visited websites. Smart Page works by creating feeds for your favorite web destinations and suggesting other sources based on your surfing habits. Foxconn's Taiyuan plant faces worker unrest, "2,000 person" riot
A Foxconn facility in Taiyuan, China is the scene of ongoing disturbances as workers rioted in the overnight hours. Engadget's Richard Lai, monitoring the Chinese microblogging and social sites, sees unofficial reports that the trigger for tonight's events was when security guards struck a Foxconn employee.

Security researchers identify transit system exploit in San Fran and New Jersey, create app to prove it
Mobile security company Intrepidus Group presented evidence during the EUSecWest security conference potentially identifying a major flaw in at least two US transit systems. Creating an Android app named "UltraReset" and using it in tandem with an NFC-enabled Android phone (a Nexus S, in this case), security researchers Corey Benninger and Max Sobell were able to reset and reuse -- free of charge -- transit access cards in both San Francisco's MUNI system and New Jersey's PATH system. Iran announces plans to create isolated local internet system, fate of global access unknown
