Report: Verizon iPhone 5 unlocked for GSM, hack allows HPSA+
According to reports, the Verizon iPhone 5 is GSM unlocked out of the box. In addition, using a cut-down AT&T Micro SIM to roughly conform with the Nano SIM standard, the Verizon iPhone 5 is able to acquire an AT&T signal, and connect to the HPSA+ network, AT&T's 4G-equivalent network.

Archos 101 XS available in Europe for £300 via the company's online store
The Archos 101 XS, a 10-inch ICS tablet packing a magnetically attached keyboard dock, is now available for purchase via the company's European websites. The slate, with 16GB of internal storage, is going for £300 (about $487). No word yet on when this guy will make it to North America. iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3 drop test
Android Authority bought an iPhone 5 and compared the Apple smartphone to the Samsung Galaxy S III in a durability drop test. The blog dropped both devices from three different heights in a way that simulates a fall under normal usage. They first dropped the devices from pocket level, then from about four feet (mid-chest level) and finally from about five and a half feet (head level).
Not surprisingly, the plastic casing of the Samsung Galaxy S III didn't fare so well, with both the screen and the outer case cracking from a mere four-foot drop. In the five-foot drop, the S III's battery cover went flying and the damage to the screen was made even w

Vic Gundotra says Nik's 'high-end tools and plugins' will survive. Snapseed? Maybe not.
After Google effectively killed Sparrow's apps when it purchased the company (they're still available and supported, but don't expect much future development) there was some worry about the future of Nik Software. Well, Vic Gundotra took to Google+ to salve some of those fears. Earlier this week I proudly welcomed +Nik Software to Google. They've been making pictures more awesome for 17 years, and we're excited to bring Nik's expertise to the entire Google+ community!

Dell launches 2013 S display line with five new models
Dell has unveiled the new S Series of displays. All five models feature 178 degree vertical and horizontal wide viewing angle, in-plane switching panel technology. Included in the new displays the Dell Image Enhance feature is said to improve visual quality. The Dell Display Manager allows fast access to software such as Auto Mode, which lets users select the preferred preset mode for specific applications.

Crossover broken by latest Apple OS updates, patch ready [u]
Updated with discussion of problem and Codeweavers update information According to an announcement post on the Codeweavers support forum, virtualization application Crossover fails to operate under recently-released OS X versions 10.8.2 and 10.7.5. Crossover reports that the bug "prevents CrossOver from operating any application that uses 3D functions" and that it is "working with Apple on this issue and we hope to resolve it rapidly."

News: Lightning cable torn down, authentication chip spotted
A disassembled Lightning cable appears to reveal an Apple authentication chip within the cable, according to an AppleInsider report. Briefly: Apple retail protest, Pangea app updates
In support of a strike among Apple retail employees in France, members of the Apple Workers Union around the world are taking place in a Day of Solidarity. This morning members in the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, China, Japan, and the UK stood outside local Apple stores to help bring awareness to the issues. The strike arose from a demand to increase basic services in the store, including a source of clean water for drinking. A similar event has been planned for September 28 in Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, and Sweden.

'Majority' of eastern Sprint shops low or out of iPhone 5
"The majority" of Sprint stores on the US east coast are either low or completely out of iPhone 5s, a spokesperson says. Where phones aren't in stock, the carrier says it's offering a $50 gift card and the chance to reserve a phone from an upcoming shipment. Rivals AT&T and Verizon have yet to comment on store stock, but since Sprint is still the least popular national iPhone carrier, it may mean that the two have far fewer units available.

DirecTV iPhone app now streams selected content
DirecTV has updated its iPhone app to support streaming, but many channels remain unavailable, including news channels like Fox News, CNN and MSNBC. Fortunately, entertainment shows and movies from HBO, Cinemax, Starz and Encore are included. The programs aren't live but available via stream-on-demand.
If you're on your home Wi-Fi network, the picture gets a bit brighter. You can livestream anything your DirecTV receiver can get. Call of Duty: Black Ops to invade Macs on Sep. 27
Get ready, Call of Duty fans. Aspyr Media has announced that Call of Duty: Black Ops will be available for Macs as of September 27.
The hugely popular first-person military shooter has been available for Windows machines anc consoles since 2010. Later this month it will debut in the Mac App Store and Steam for Macs simultaneously.
The game will cost US$49.99 and include the First Strike add-on pack. This will mark the first stand-alone Mac app that Aspyr has released to Steam.
And I haven't finished wasting time with Modern Warfare yet.

Google shutters Music Search in China, concedes battle to Baidu
Google has had a rough go of it in China. The company seems to fall farther and farther behind the home-grown search powerhouse Baidu. NFL Network and RedZone Channel coming to Time Warner Cable
You don't have to look high (or low) to find a litany of complaints regarding Time Warner Cable's service, support or pricing, but it's evidently aiming to right one particular wrong later today. Best Buy, other retailers delaying iPhone 5 preorders
Best Buy, Walmart, and Sam's Club are delaying sales of iPhone 5 preorders to some customers, MacRumors notes. One person says that they received an email from Best Buy warning him that he wouldn't have his phone today, and that it might take up to 28 days before it's in stock. Sony's stacked Exmor RS phone camera sensors detuned over quality worries
Sony would still like you to get excited about its upcoming Exmor RS stacked CMOS image sensors -- just not too excited. Both the 8-megapixel IMX134 and 13-megapixel IMX135 are scaling back from their original RGBW (red, green, blue, white) coding to an ordinary RGB over concerns that they aren't meeting Sony's "image quality standards" as originally designed. Consequently, either sensor will be less sensitive to light and diminish some of that high dynamic range magic. FreeWheelin helmet system delivers noise-resistant Bluetooth audio
Richard Solo's FreeWheelin audio system (US$150 street price) allows you to add stereo speakers to your bike helmet. As the picture to the right shows, it consists of three small boxes that use a high-powered variant of Velcro to mount to the helmet's back and sides.
It's about as dorky looking a product as you could imagine but dang if it doesn't deliver really fabulous sound.
I hooked up my test unit to USB power for a few hours before taking it all for a spin on my bike. Charging is really easy, but you either have to hook up your entire helmet or dismount/remount the speakers and control box from their attachment areas. It's not a big deal either way, I found. Pairing the Bluetooth was also super-easy.

Hulu Plus, HBO Go and Max Go apps for Android updated with support for closed captions
Sound familiar? Just days after the mobile apps for HBO, Cinemax and Hulu added closed captions support on iOS, a similar slew of upgrades have come to their apps on Android. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any change in the number of supported devices for any of them at this time. Japanese thieves steal 191 iPhone 5s on morning of launch
Thieves in Osaka, Japan managed to steal 191 iPhone 5s in the early hours before the phone's launch today, the Wall Street Journal reports. Police say that three stores across the city were hit; the first incident happened at one of carrier KDDI's au stores in the suburb of Ibaraki. Local residents called the police shortly before 3AM, saying that three men were skulking around the outlet. 33 iPhones were taken, and neither the men nor the phones have been found.

Apple's mobile devices have been targeted by thieves since the iPod debuted years ago. As the iPhone 5 goes on sale, New York City police are taking a proactive step towards protecting customers.
Today, Gothamist reports that NYC police will be at the 5th Avenue Apple Store asking iPhone 5 buyers to register their device's serial number. It's a part of the Operation I.D. program, which involves registering the device's number and the owner's name and address with the police department.

Im Modaco-Forum wurde verbreitet, dass One X Modelle ohne Vertragsbindung im Oktober in den Genuss von Project Butter nebst Sense 4.5 kommen und bis Weihnachten alle anderen Geräte auch folgen sollen. Swiss railway says it's 'proud' Apple is using its iconic clock design, still wants to get paid

Court: Samsung, Motorola not violating Apple touch patent
Germany's Mannheim Regional Court has ruled against an Apple claim that some Samsung and Motorola devices based on Android are violating a "touch event" patent, according to FOSS Patents. The judgment technically covers two separate lawsuits, but Samsung and Motorola were both accused of infringing on European Patent EP2098948, documenting how software can recognize or ignore touch interactions. News: Report: Best Buy drops ball on iPhone 5 preorders
Best Buy won’t be fulfilling all iPhone 5 pre-orders at launch, according to an internal memo posted by 9to5Mac. Fifth Avenue iPhone 5 lineup outstretches one for iPhone 4S
At 10 minutes before the iPhone 5 went on sale this morning, some 820 people were in line at Apple's flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York City, says Fortune. Die Upgrade-Rate auf iOS 6 unter iPhone- und iPad-Usern hat trotz Maps einen nahezu sensationellen Anstieg zu verzeichnen. Innerhalb von nur 24 Stunden hatten 15 Prozent der User schon auf das neue System upgegradet, die neuen iPhone 5 User sind da noch nicht dabei. Android 4.0 hat dafür (da gibt es verschiedenste Gründe und die Lage ist natürlich vollkommen anders) ca. 8 Monate gebraucht. App Store: Entwickler müssen Screenshots mit iPhone-5-Auflösung einreichen

Kein Wahnsinn wie in den USA, aber die iPhone 5 Schlangen in Köln, Stuttart, Dresden, Oberhausen, Hamburg und München sind ganz schön massiv und über Nacht ziemlich angeschwellt. OS X Server for Mountain Lion updated, adds iOS 6 support
Following the release of iOS 6 and an update for the client (user) edition of OS X 10.8, Apple has updated its $20 OS X Server application (which functions to convert the OS to the Server edition of Mountain Lion) to version 2.1, which adds the ability to manage the DHCP service, configuring DNS entries with second-level domains and aliases and iOS device management support to the program. The repair and disassembly experts at iFixit have commenced the teardown of the new iPhone 5. Apple issues statement on Maps, thanks users for feedback
Apple says it is working hard to correct some flaws and inaccuracies in its new Maps application, which replaces Google Maps in iOS 6. On top of complaints that transit and walking directions were dropped from the new applications compared to Google's, users have pointed out satellite imagery errors and other inaccuracies that include outdated images, less-specific road maps, lack of "Streetview" and some business names, and inaccurate names on points of interest. Apple thanks users for their feedback but also reminds them that the app and its service are new, and that it will improve.

Daily iPhone App: Plume is a simple and charming social network-powered reader
Plume was recommended to me a while back by fellow TUAWer Brett Terpstra, and while it does look lovely on first site, it's one of those apps that really only shows its usefulness after a while.
Plume is a reading app (currently for iPhone only) that pulls links and content automatically from your social networking timelines, so when your friends and follows link to blog posts and other content, Plume will pull out those links and re-organize them for you in an easy-to-read form. The functionality is similar to Flipbook on the iPad, but again -- this is an iPhone app, and it rolls up this content in a way that's so unique you kind of have to get used to it at first.

Codeweavers Crossover broken by latest Apple OS updates
According to an announcement post on the Codeweavers support forum, Virtualization application Crossover fails to operate under recently released OS X versions 10.8.2 and 10.7.5. The Wall Street Journal reports that Samsung is "likely" to add Apple's new iPhone 5 to its ongoing patent lawsuit against the company from Cupertino because, well, why not, right? Apple demolished Samsung in the recent ruling, and Samsung is now carrying out a second lawsuit against eight more patents, so the iPhone 5 may be thrown in there as well. A Samsung representative tells the WSJ that it will need to "analyze" the device first, but if it finds any evidence of infringement, it'll get thrown on the pile of evidence already set up for the case.

Apple says Maps "will get better"
It's been just over 24 hours since iOS 6 hit and pretty much the whole internet (myself included) is up in arms about the step backwards Apple made to mapping. I'm talking about the removal of Google Maps from iOS and the replacement with Apple's own mapping solution. Verizon CFO buries his head in the sand, claims unlimited data is 'going by the wayside'
"La la la la. I can't hear you." Verizon's CFO, Fran Shammo, might've just as well made those comments with his hands firmly cupped over his ears, as the firm's chief number cruncher told attendees at today's Goldman Sachs investor conference, "Unlimited is just a word, it doesn't really mean anything." Garmin, Embark bring public transit navigation to iOS 6 Maps
Garmin and Embark have announced that their respective iOS apps will bring public transportation features to Apple's new Maps app in iOS 6. Although the core Maps utility does not provide public transit navigation, Apple earlier this year outlined plans to utilize third-party services to expand Maps' functionality beyond vehicle navigation.
