Apple prohibits apps from promoting third-party titles
Apple has reportedly changed its App Store terms and conditions to restrict third-party app promotion. A new section in the terms prohibits developers from submitting iOS apps that highlight titles offered by other developers, fueling speculation that the company may be preparing to curtail the growth of apps that solely serve as a promotional platform for other App Store offerings.

iPad mini production allegedly underway in Brazil
Production of the so-called iPad mini is in progress at a Brazilian factory, says a source for Macotakara. The person doesn't name the manufacturer, but it would almost certainly be Foxconn, Apple's main supplier, which opened up a Brazilian plant just this year. Additionally the source claims that the production version of the new iPad is missing a microphone hole on the back, despite earlier mockups suggesting one, and the presence of a rear mic on the iPhone 5.

Firefox Retina display support almost here
TechCrunch is reporting that Firefox has inserted support for Apple's Retina display into its nightly builds, which means the official release will be in the public's hands very soon. Unfortunately, "very soon" in this case may mean "not soon enough" for many users -- while the Aurora release of this build should be out next week, the stable release might not be until January 2013. That may be too long for some users, especially since Safari supported the Retina display on day one (because it's made by Apple, of course), and Chrome released support for Retina earlier this year.

NEC announces business-minded edge-lit LED displays with inbuilt tuners
Lest we forget NEC doesn't just make Ultrabooks, the company recently announced its new E series of commercial-grade displays. They include a 32-inch E323, 42-inch E423, 46-inch E463, and a 55-inch E553, all of which are edge-lit LED models that are designed for educational, enterprise and retail use. Video: iPhone 5 speaker is loudest iPhone speaker yet
Lucky iPhone 5 owners (I'm not one of them yet) can be proud to know that their new device is the loudest iPhone yet. The folks over at iClarified thought that it seemed a bit louder than older versions, so they did the right thing and tested the iPhone 5 -- and every other model of iPhone ever built -- with a decibel meter.
What they found is that the iPhone 5 speaker is indeed the loudest yet, pumping out an impressive 100.3 dBA when a pink noise file was played in the Music app. That's greater than the previous winner, the iPhone 4S, which tipped the meter at 97.9 dBA. John Sculley discusses ARM and the Newton
One of the products often pointed out as the sterling example of an Apple failure is the Newton MessagePad. The product, which launched in 1993 only to be axed in 1998 by the newly returned Steve Jobs, was ahead of its time in many ways. The man who took the project under his tutelage in the early 1990s was then-CEO John Sculley, who recently spoke at a South Florida Technology Alliance event about the Newton and the ARM processor that powered it.

iPhone 5 data leaks also affecting AT&T, Sprint subscribers
Verizon subscribers aren't the only ones who have been experiencing data leaks with the iPhone 5, notes the New York Times and 9to5Mac. The Times writes that the issue may be affecting AT&T and Sprint customers as well. 9to5 goes into detail about the AT&T side; one person complains that he's already accrued over $100 in overage fees, while another says that they managed to consume 2GB of cellular data in three days.

Apple extends workers' Thanksgiving vacation
As it did last year, Apple is extending the Thanksgiving vacation time it gives to some of its workers for 2012, according to an email memo from CEO Tim Cook. "To recognize the efforts that made this amazing year possible, Iím happy to announce that weíre extending the Thanksgiving holiday once again this year. We will shut down with pay on November 19, 20 and 21 so our teams can spend the whole week with their loved ones," he writes.

News: AT&T iPhone 5 Wi-Fi/cellular data drain reported
While Apple has released a fix for Verizon iPhone 5 users experiencing unexpected cellular data usage while on a Wi-Fi network, AT&T iPhone 5 users are also reporting the same issue, suggesting that an iOS 6 problem is to blame. Rumor has iPad mini event invitations going out Oct. 10th
A major Apple investor, quoted by Fortune, is claiming to have heard from "multiple sources" that an invitation to an iPad mini event should reach the press on October 10th. Based on that timing and Apple's past launch strategies, Fortune suggests that it could mean a product unveiling on October 17th, and an actual launch on November 2nd. A launch would almost certainly take place before Black Friday, since Apple might otherwise miss out on holiday sales.

Brian Eno is one of the greatest musicians and producers in the long history of rock. His ambient music is beautiful and ethereal. I have listened to it for years to relax or let my imagination fly.
He's also produced music for U2, Devo, David Bowie, Talking heads and others. He composed the startup sound for Windows 95 which, I might add, he created on a Mac.

Apple has made a rare backtrack on some of its marketing, and dropped a claim about iOS 6 Maps being the "most powerful mapping service ever," reports note. Apple's website previously had a short blurb that read, "Designed by Apple from the ground up, Maps gives you turn-by-turn spoken directions, interactive 3D views, and the stunning Flyover feature. Apple facing European investigation of Apple Care sales
European Union Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding is asking EU countries to confirm that Apple retailers are advertising the buyers' right to a minimum two-year warranty for qualifying products.
Reding notes that "Apple prominently advertised that its products come with a one-year manufacturer warranty but failed to clearly indicate the consumers' automatic and free-of-cost entitlement to a minimum two-year guarantee under EU law" in a letter to EU members.

Analyst: iPad mini production may reach 10M units in Q4
Contract manufacturers may be preparing to build more than 10 million mini iPad tablets in the fourth quarter, according to Barclays analysts. Taiwan information minister chastised for promoting iPhone 5
When you're in politics, even the most innocuous statement -- or Facebook post -- can land you in hot water. That's what Hu Yu-wei, Taiwan's information minister and a government spokesperson, discovered on Sunday when he posted a photo of an iPhone 5 on his personal Facebook page.

Apple stock buyback to begin today
Part of Apple's plan to burn up a bit of that US$117.2 billion cache of cash starts today, according to Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt. Over the next three years, Apple will use US$10 billion to repurchase shares of AAPL.
Elmer-DeWitt notes that one Wall Street analyst, Bernstein's Toni Sacconaghi, was less than thrilled by the announcement of the stock buyback when it was announced back in March. Sacconaghi wanted the company to give back some of the cash horde to shareholders, in particular the institutional investors who hold 70 percent of the total ownership of Apple. iTunes terms-of-service glitch briefly halts downloads
An overnight error with iTunes prevented many users from downloading content via the service, according to complaints. The overriding issue was an inability to buy or update apps via the App Store; a message would pop up, asking people to accept new terms and conditions for iTunes before the download could continue. Merging Apple IDs still not possible. Now what?
TUAW reader Glenn Thorpe wrote about Apple ID problems:
"I recently upgraded to iOS 6 as recommended and I am now faced with some challenges when using FaceTime and Messages.
"My Apple ID account which I use to download apps cannot be used for FaceTime nor Messages. I had to create new AppleIDs for both of these applications. The frustrating issue is that I now have three AppleIDs to manage and I am not sure of what impact this will have when I buy apps or try to perform other transactions.
"Please advise me if I can somehow consolidate these IDs or will I be able to use my original ID again for all of my apps."
This has been a long-standing problem, made worse by the advent of iCloud.

Die Rolle von Übersetzern
Vor einigen Tagen purzelte der vor Monaten vorbestellte neue Terry Pratchett-Roman “Steife Brise” auf meinen Kindle. Nach Lesen der ersten Seiten stellt sich eine irritierende Fremdheit ein: Ich erkenne die Charaktere nicht mehr. Sowohl der Umgang der einzelnen Personen untereinander als auch die Beschreibung der Personen und ihre Dialoge wirken vollkommen unbekannt. Der Stil wirkt hölzern und leer. Jede Verspieltheit ist verschwunden. Es wirkt wie ein Neuanfang der Scheibenwelt, den ein vertrockneter Beamter in seinem grauen Büro verfasst.
Die Ursache war schnell gefunden: Andreas Brandhorst übersetzt nicht mehr. Und die beiden neuen Übersetzer kennen offenbar die Scheibenwelt nicht. Ebenso offenbar die Lektoren nicht. Wer konsquent “Du” durch “Sie” ersetzt, wenn die Mitglieder der Stadtwache ihren Hauptmann nicht mehr mit “Herr”, sondern mit “Chef” anreden und wenn jegliche allwissende, selbstironische Betrachtung von Situationen des Lord

Es wird mal wieder Zeit für ein paar interessante Zahlen. ComScore hat eine interessante Übersicht veröffentlicht, die zeigt, welcher Smartphone-Hersteller zu wie viel Prozent auf dem Markt in Deutschland vertreten ist. Und der Gewinner ist: Samsung.

Apple Ping nicht mehr verfügbar

Das habe ich vor einem Jahr schon einmal probiert und regelmäßig vergessen, das Essen zu fotografieren. In der Rückschau fand ich die Bilder allerdings ziemlich nett. Modbook Pro replaces hard disks with solid state storage

Apple quietly bumping iCloud storage to 25 GB until the year 2050?
Twitter user @mgleet tipped me off that Apple appears to have bumped his iCloud storage plan to 25 GBs until the year 2050. Multiple people here at TUAW are seeing the same plan bumps, though none of us has upgraded our plans, not to mention paid 38 years in advance.
Apple has been known to offer cloud storage upgrades for free in the past when their online services didn't live up to expectations (MobileMe). Could this be a way Apple is apologizing for the Maps debacle?
