Apple's Passbook: Helping to make baseball tickets extinct
According to a post on MarketWatch today, Major League Baseball would love to stop selling paper tickets. It turns out that Apple's Passbook might very well help them to accomplish that goal during the next year.
Traditional ticket sales have been dropping quite a bit anyway -- from 55 percent in 2011 to less than 33 percent so far this year -- as fans are picking up tickets from MLB and other outlets (most notably StubHub) in digital formats. But Passbook was apparently a huge hit in a test run during the final two weeks of the 2012 regular season.

Western Digital bumps My Book Thunderbolt Duo to 8TB, consoles regular My Book buyers with 4TB
Many of us may have liked the prospect of Western Digital's My Book Thunderbolt Duo, but there's no doubt some of us who discovered that even 6TB just wouldn't cut it. Project HOPE's accidental iPad ad
Project HOPE is a US health care organization that has been bringing medical care and training to areas in need around the world since 1958. In the video below, HOPE volunteer and pediatric physician Dr. Dana Braner talks about how the iPad helps him break down barriers between himself and his young patients, who are usually quite concerned about visiting the doctor.

Verizon: VoLTE coming end of 2013, in testing now
In a media conference call today, Verizon's Nicola Palmer confirmed that the carrier is indeed working on Voice-over-LTE capability, and the company plans to roll out the feature late next year. Verizon is reportedly continuing to test the service, which has been in the works for some time now. Estimates made earlier in this year pegged Verizon's VoLTE service as arriving in early 2013, though Palmer's latest statements disprove those predictions.

iPhone 5 gets approval from Brazil's telecoms body
The iPhone 5 has been approved for sale by Brazil's telecommunications regulatory, Anatel, MacRumors reports. A notice is said to have been posted yesterday, and lists Foxconn plants in Brazil and China as assembly facilities. Still left out of the document, though, is when Apple might plan to launch the 5 in the region. Apple is aiming at having the phone in 100 countries by December.

Note Anytime helps make notes easy and elegant
There are quite a few note-taking apps for the iPad, but I have to say Note Anytime has features that are compelling. Notes can be as simple as writing on a legal pad, or more complex with images, hand-drawn illustrations, diagrams and documents that can be helpful in anything from project planning to creating an ad campaign.
The app is free for now, although there are a host of add-ons that range from US$0.99 to $6.99. None are necessary to use the app in powerful ways, but some may want the enhancements, like different patterns for papers or more artistic calligraphic fonts.

Lodsys: 150 iOS developers give in to patent demands
Lodsys filed what many are calling a frivolous, "patent troll" lawsuit against a number of smaller iOS developers last year, claiming that while Apple may have licensed its in-app purchase technology patents for iOS, individual developers have not, and should be held accountable for using it. Despite the fact that this seems patently absurd (pun intended), Lodsys claims that over 150 developers have licensed the technology for themselves, with the majority of them actually doing so "outside of the litigation process." Taiwan asks Apple to obscure radar defense system in iOS 6 Maps
Another day, another complaint about iOS 6 Maps. Today, the Taiwanese government is asking Apple to obscure details of a new radar system near Hsinchu Air Base on the island that appear in satellite images.
Apple's doing nothing illegal; it's just a request to have Apple use lower-resolution images in the map of this area. While we don't know exactly where the radar system is or what it looks like, a quick look at the Hsinchu Air Base in both iOS 6 Maps and Google Maps shows that the Apple images are already at a bit lower resolution than the Google images.

Apple's Lightning authentication chip cloned
One of the "features" of Apple's new Lightning adapter on the iPhone 5 is a special authentication chip that must be built into the adapter or third-party peripherals in order for them to work properly. Apple is reportedly doing this in order to insure compatibility with third-party Lightning peripherals, but there's some concern about availability and cost of those peripherals due to this requirement. Unauthorized Lightning accessories spotted
Third-party manufacturers are said to have cracked the authentication layer Apple builds into all of its new Lightning connectors for its newest iDevices. A new iPhone 5 dock is currently being sold through China-based iPhone5mod.com, representatives for which spoke with Mac Rumors, confirming that they had obtained cracked chips that bypass Apple's authentication functions. Multiple Foxconn labor disputes disrupt iPhone production
In the last week, Foxconn faced several rounds of labor disputes that threatened to slow iPhone 5 production, says a report by Bloomberg. The disputes occurred on October 1, October 2 and on October 5. In each case, the company had to stop production lines after workers protested overly strict working conditions.
Bloomberg claims the Asian manufacturer lost two work shifts on October 5 at its Zhengzhou plant when workers became frustrated by increased pressure to keep the iPhone 5 free from scratches. Scratching of the iPhone 5's outer casing has been reported among owners who discovered the blemishes when they opened their new iPhone.

New photos show alleged back, dock connector for iPad mini
Two new photos allegedly show the back and the Lightning dock connector of Apple's upcoming iPad mini. Posted by 9to5Mac's Sonny Dickson, the photos have little context, and it's difficult to judge their authenticity. iPhone 5 selling out in Hong Kong
Hong Kong residents have iPhone 5 fever, and they are buying the smartphone at an astounding rate, according to a report in AppleInsider. This information comes from analyst Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets who is visiting the Asian-Pacific region.
White claims customers have a better chance at winning the actual lottery than getting an iPhone via Apple's online ordering process. Some recent experiences I have had with Apple on a personal level have started me questioning the direction that it is headed. From a financial perspective, the company has never been stronger ñ it has over $100 billion in cash and it is the most valuable company in the world based on its current market cap. So argumentiert jedenfalls die schwedische Menschrechtsgruppe Civil Rights Defenders, die eine Captcha-Variante mit Extra-Gewissensfrage entwickelt haben. Civil Rights Captcha soll dabei gleichermaßen praktisch sein und zum Nachdenken anregen, was erstmal nett gemeint ist, aber im Detail natürlich schnell fragwürdig wird, spätestens wenn autoritäre Regierungen das Prinzip übernehmen, aber auch weil man Problembewusstsein wohl kaum mittels Multiple-Choice-Logik

Ganz ohne großes Gerät wie CNC-Fräse funktioniert sie mit einer Fotozelle, die an einem AT Tiny Microcontroller hängt, der die Lichtintensität ermittelt und über einen Arduino einem kleinen Rotor den Befehl gibt, die Sonnengläser runterzuklappen. A developer training firm named Shiny Development has been tracking waiting times for the App Store review process as closely as it can, and it has bad news for would-be app developers: The waiting times for the Mac App Store are growing longer. Report: New Boxee TV box includes live over-the-air TV
Responding to some criticisms of the original device, a new Boxee media streaming receiver is being tested. As a developer, you're probably aware that selling your app can be just as important as creating your app. Today, one of the regulars in #iphonedev asked me to take a look at his pitch video.
Intended to sell the idea of his app to possible reviewers, blogs, and other media, his first attempt demonstrated many common pitfalls. After discussing these with my editor, we decided to run a DevJuice to offer some recommendations.
What follows are six tips to help you create tighter video pitches. Use these suggestions to help tune your product videos before you send them off to bloggers.

Apple joins consortium backing Open Web Platform doc site
Apple has joined forces with most of the other big industry players (HP, Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, Facebook and others) in supporting Web Platform Docs, a new site dedicated to documentation, reference and tutorials for the various components that make up the Open Web Platform. OWP is a community-driven project that aims to unify documentation on current and future web technologies from HTML5 to WebGL which is currently scattered among the various industry players' sites and elsewhere.

Boxee TV streaming / OTA set-top box and DVR pics leak out
If you've been wondering "what will Boxee do next?" there appears to be an answer. A tipster has sent The Verge pics of a new set-top box, still built by D-Link, that ditches the original's angular design for a more conventional shape and integrates live TV tuning support as well as DVR capabilities. There's no word on the storage capabilities, but the box advertises an included antenna and remote (lightly refreshed, losing the QWERTY keyboard) and implores owners to "stop wasting money o

Mac mini stocks running low at third-party dealers
Some internet and physical retailers are reporting shortages, or in some cases complete outages, of Mac mini stock. Internet retailers Amazon, MacConnection, MacMall, and J&R are all reporting partial or complete sell-outs of the diminutive computer. According to reports gathered by AppleInsider, Amazon is reporting only a few units of the Mac mini server with MacMall and MacConnection completely bereft of stock. Also, Macerkopf.de reported that supply of the computer is depleting in Germany.

Moto pulls phones and tablets from German site pending software update
We wouldn't quite call it an unexpected turn of events, but it certainly qualifies as dramatic -- Motorola has pulled almost every Android device in its roster from its German site, leaving only the RAZR HD and RAZR i behind. German site Areamobile first reported the disappearance, and received word from Moto PR that the devices were removed while the OS was "being reworked." Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, others to launch new Web standards resource
Apple is just one of quite a few big tech companies signed on to help support the Worldwide Web Consortium (known as the W3C) in developing a brand new web standards resource called WebPlatform.org. The new site is simply designed to get all available information about how to code for the various web standards out there (from HTML and CSS to newer tech like the Canvas API and various Audio plugins) all together in one clean, easy-to-find place.

iOS's Notification Center cares more about my contacts' birthdays than I do
I love Notification Center, but there's one thing that's bugged me about it since its introduction in iOS 5 and that thing is even worse in iOS 6: Notification Center always shows your contacts' birthdays no matter what.
In iOS 5 this wasn't too annoying, because most people probably didn't have a birthday listed for every contact in their address book (just the important ones -- like close friends and family).
