Daily iPhone App: Super Monsters Ate My Condo makes a great game even better
Monsters Ate My Condo, developed by PikPok and published by Adult Swim, has been one of my favorite games this year so far. It's a frenetic puzzle game that has you tossing apartment blocks into the various hungry mouths of gigantic monsters, trying to stack up the right colors and earn points all over a very weird but wild aesthetic. And yesterday, Adult Swim surprised us with a re-release of the game, this time called Super Monsters Ate My Condo.
The Super version leaves the basic core gameplay intact, but while the original version has an "endless mode" included, this one sticks with only the timed mode, and instead bu

Amazon rejects Apple's false advertising claim in App Store suit
Amazon.com has filed a statement in Apple's ongoing claim against the online retail giant, saying that the generic use of the term "app store" is not a violation of Apple's "App Store" trademark. Amazon also asked for judgment regarding the suggestion that its use of "Appstore" to describe its own Android marketplace would be considered false advertising, in an attempt to somehow convince customers that the marketplace was related to Apple's own iOS App Store. Amazon also cites Steve Jobs and other Apple executives as calling competitors' markets "app stores" as well.

Google adds CardDAV to Gmail and Google Calendar
Google has announced that Gmail and Google Calendar are now capable of contact sync via CardDAV. CardDAV is an open format, and should make it easier to sync Google contacts to third-party clients, such as the native Contacts app in iOS. Previously people sometimes had to go through harder workarounds, such as Exchange.

The A6 inside the iPhone 5 varies its clock speed for performance
One possible reason the iPhone 5 has such great battery life is the clever way the A6 changes its clock speed. While originally thought to be clocked at 1GHz, the chip has been clocked at 1.1GHz as well as 1.3GHz by Current Editorials.

China certifies iPhone 5, sales may begin in October
It looks like China will get the iPhone 5 sooner than previously thought, M.I.C. Gadget reports. Two models of the iPhone 5 received China Compulsory Certificate approval less than a week after it officially went on sale. Previous certifications took two months on average, with the iPhone 4S gaining its certification in December 2011 for sale in January 2012.

AT&T customers who bought their iPhone 5 off-contract can easily unlock their phone to work on another carrier, says a report in TechCrunch. Instead of faxing paperwork to AT&T and waiting for authorization, customers without a contract can simply connect their iPhone 5 to iTunes and restore it to unlock the device. Bank of America tests purchases using iPhone, Android
Bank of America has begun testing a new mobile payment system using iPhones and Android phones, Reuters reports. The technology was developed by a company called Paydiant, and unlike a previous trial, doesn't depend on phones and stores being equipped with NFC technology. Instead payment card data is stored on a server, and when a person goes to pay, they load an app that scans a QR code displayed at a register. iPhone 5 User Guide makes reference to Apple-made dock
The official iPhone 5 User Guide (PDF) makes references to an official "iPhone Dock" for the device, even though Apple hasn't updated earlier docks to fit the new Lightning connector format, notes MacDailyNews. One reference can be found on page 7, where the manual states that the 5's bundled Lightning-to-USB cable "can also be used with the iPhone Dock (sold separately)." Another is on page 34, claiming that a 5 can be connected "to your computer using the included cable and the Dock, available separately."

AT&T announces MiFi Liberate touchscreen hotspot
AT&T announced today that it would be the exclusive carrier of the MiFi Liberate, the first mobile hotspot with a touchscreen display. The MiFi Liberate, from Novatel Wireless, will connect to AT&T's 4G LTE network, and it will support up to 10 Wi-Fi devices. Mobile payment is still a bit of a wild west at the moment, and seemingly every technological and financial institution has a dog in this fight. New Java zero-day covers all versions, could affect Macs
First the bad news: a rather serious zero-day exploit has been discovered in all currently-supported versions of Java. And yes, this sort of exploit can be used to hijack a machine. Now the good news: Apple stopped bundling Java back in 10.6, and this exploit is a proof-of-concept and has been submitted to Oracle, who should be working on a fix as we speak.
If you don't need Java, we don't recommend installing it on Lion or Mountain Lion machines. If you do use Java, always be sure to install the latest patches. Oracle is due to issue more patches in mid-October.

Bank of America testing iPhone payment system
Bank of America is testing a new system that will let customers make mobile payments with smartphones, including the iPhone, Reuters reports.
Testing has begun in Charlotte, North Carolina where the bank is headquartered. Reuters reports the bank is using technology from Paydiant, whose mobile payment solution is in trials with several banks. The system works by printing a QR Code on a receipt or price tag. It's scanned with an iPhone or some Android models and the transaction is launched. QR coding is just one method being studied.

Der Webbrowser musste an die INtel-Hardware angepasst werden, dieser Prozess ist jetzt abgeschlossen. Some users of the iPhone 4S and third-generation iPad are reporting ongoing wireless connectivity problems after upgrading to iOS 6, according to a thread on Apple's support forums. People may, for instance, find the option to connect to Wi-Fi grayed out. Others may be able to turn Wi-Fi on under Settings, but nevertheless be unable to connect to their LAN. Tokyoflash Kisai Logo: Binärer Wolf im Schafspelz (Video)

Es gibt einen Neuzugang im Onlineshop des japanischen Uhrenherstellers Tokyoflash. Die Kisai Logo mag zwar auf den ersten Blick kryptisch wirken, aber verglichen mit den sich im hauseigenen Blog tummelnden Fankonzepten ist sie ein ausgesprochen zahmes Modell: Während ein Zahlenblock in der Mitte die Minuten anzeigt, wandert ein Rechteck wie bei einem normalen Zifferblatt rundherum die Stunden ab. Zu Knobbeln gibt's bei Bedarf trotzdem was, weil sich die Logo auf Binärsystem umstellen lässt, aber das seht ihr euch am besten gleich selbst im Video nach dem Break an.

Mechanisches Donkey Kong aus Pappe zum Nachbauen (Video)

Der Bastler Martin Raynsford hat mit dem Bau einer mechanischen Version des Game-Klassikers Donkey Kong begonnnen und soweit sieht seine Pappkonstruktion wirklich gut aus, auch wenn noch nicht rasend viel passiert: magnetische Kugeln rollen über Rampen abwärts, die der per NES-Controller gesteuerte Pappmario überspringen muss. Jenseits dessen ist der wackere Installateur allerdings noch unbeweglich, aber Raynsford will sein Modell dem Original noch soweit wie irgend möglich annähern. Die Dateien fürs Lasercutten aller Pappteile gibt´s übrigens auf Raynsfords Site, Nach- und Mitbauen ist nämlich explizit erwünscht.

Hitachis Quarzglas-Datenträger soll "hunderte Millionen Jahre" lesbar bleiben

Hitachi hat einen Datenträger für die Ewigkeit ausgetüftelt, mit dem der Beständigkeitsrekord von Steintafeln als Medium endlich getoppt werden soll. Hitachis Speicher soll nämlich "hunderte Millionen Jahre" lang lesbar bleiben und zwar mittels einfacher optischer Vergrößerung - wenn man denn auch den Algorithmus zum Entschlüsseln der binären Daten besitzt, die per Laser in Quarzglas gebrannt wurden. Die Details der Technik will Hitachi Ende des Monats auf einem Kongress für optische Speicher in Tokio erläutern.

iPhone 5-Kamera wird in Island auf Lichtstärke und Robustheit getestet, Vergleich mit iPhone 4S
iPhone 5-Kameratest, diesmal in Island. Fotograf Austin Mann hat sich zusammen mit ein paar Kollegen ein paar iPhone 5 geschnappt und sie im schummrigen Nordlicht Islands auf Lichtstärke und Qualität der Kamera (auch im Vergleich zum 4S) und das Durchhaltevermögen nach dem Fallenlassen in diverse Schlammlöcher und dem Besprühen mit Geysir-Gischt überprüft, die einigermassen schadlos überstanden wurden. Am meisten überzeugt hat ihn die deutlich verbesserte Lichtstärke und der schnellere Verschluss, aber auch der neue Sensor. Eigentlich hatten wir gedacht, dass Myspace endgültig zur Vergangenheit gehört, gestern abend haben sie aber per Video einen Relaunch angekündigt, der vom Interface her nach einer Mischung aus Pinterest und Google + aussieht. Das einst dominierende Social Network war in den letzten Jahren vor allem wegen seines unübersichtlichen Designs mehr und mehr ins Hintertreffen geraten. Tragbares System vermisst und kartiert Innenräume in Echtzeit (Video)

Schlaumeier vom MIT haben ein tragbares System ausgetüftelt, das von allen Räumen, durch die es getragen wird, in Echtzeit detaillierte Pläne anfertigt. Dabei soll die schlaue Kombination der Messdaten diverser Sensoren (Gyroskop, Accelerometer, Laser-Entfernungsmesser) garantieren, dass Räume nicht doppelt erfasst und Stockwerke nicht durcheinander gebracht werden. Xfire: Laserpointer im Fahrradrücklicht projizieren Radspur auf die Straße (Video)

Weil die Möglichkeiten kompakter Beleuchtungssysteme dieser Tage explodieren, wird auch das Thema Fahrradbeleuchtung wieder vermehrt behirnt, wobei es natürlich um eine bessere Sichtbarkeit und damit um mehr Sicherheit beim Radeln geht. Der neuste Vorschlag kommt dabei von der US-Firma Xfire, deren Rücklicht "Bike Lane Safety Light" die klassische Beleuchtung am Rad mit zwei Laserpointern ergänzt, die so etwas wie eine virtuelle Radspur auf die Straße projizieren. Apple hatte noch über ein Jahr Zeit beim Vertrag mit Google über Maps
Apples neuer Maps-Dienst hat bisher nicht gerade für positive Schlagzeilen gesorgt, viele User wünschen sich die seit 2007 in iOS integrierte, von Google unterstützte App zurück. Bisher hiess es immer, der Vertrag mit Google sei abgelaufen, The Verge berichten nun aber, dass es eher andere Gründe gab, die Apple dazu bewegt haben, den eigenen Dienst jetzt schon in iOS 6 zu integrieren. Demnach wäre der Vertrag ihren Quellen zufolge noch bis nächstes Jahr zu den bisherigen Konditionen weitergelaufen, Apple hätte sich aber unter anderem wegen im Vergleich mit der Android-Version fehlender Turn-by-Turn-Navigation dazu entschieden, jetzt schon mit Maps zu starten. Google Play erreicht 25 Milliarden App-Downloads, feiert mit 5 Tagen Special-Deals

Heute morgen hat Google Play die 25 Milliarden App-Downloads vollgemacht, Filme, Bücher und Musik nicht mitgezählt. Das feiert Google in den nächsten fünf Tagen mit diversen Sonderngeboten: so gibt es eine Auswahl von Games von Firmen wie Gameloft, Electronic Arts, Rovio, Runtastic und Full Fat für 25 Cent, ausserdem diverse 25er-Sets: die 25 Alben, die die Welt veränderten, die 25 wichtigsten Filme usw. Dazu hat Google bekanntgegeben, dass es jetzt 675.000 Apps in Google Play gibt, 75.000 mehr als noch vor drei Monaten. Das sind zwar immer noch weniger als die ca. 700.000 Apps in Apples App Store, bald dürfte Google Play aber vorne liegen.

Leak: Dashboard Beta zeigt neuen Xbox Music Pass mit Cloud Playlists und Preisen
Zum Ende von Zune wurden Engadget die ersten Bilder von Microsofts Xbox Music-Service zugespielt, auf denen im vertrauten Kachelstil auch schon ein paar Preise zu sehen sind. Der neue Service mit cloudbasierten Playlists soll 14 Tage lang umsonst zu testen sein, danach gibt wahlweise ein Monatsabo für 8,99 Pfund (ca. 11 Euro) oder das Jahresabo für 89,90 Pfund (ca. 113 Euro). Es soll "Millionen von Songs" geben, die sich dann auf Xbox, Windows, und Windows Phone streamen und runterladen lassen. Bei der London Design Week geht es dieses Jahr recht bunt zu, jedenfalls stolpert uns nach den Opern-Salat-Algen dieses Stückchen ins Haus: die Venus von Cupertino. Das Porzellanpüppchen als iPad-Dock wurde von Scott Eaton ausgetüftelt und punktet nicht nur durch Handarbeitsqualität sondern auch durch das Quentchen Selbstironie, deren Fehlen den Apple-Kult sonst so unerträglich macht. Die Venus of Cupertino kann derzeit für 200 Dollar (155 Euro) vorbestellt werden, geliefert wird dann "in 8 bis 10 Wochen".

Google Maps Street View via Mobile Safari in zwei Wochen
Apples neuer Map-Dienst für iOS 6 strotzt bekanntlich nur so vor Fehlern. Zurzeit umschifft man das Karten-Desaster am schnellsten, indem man einfach Google Maps als Web-App nutzt. Wie David Pogue von der New York Times nun ganz nebenbei in einem Artikel zu Apples Map App erwähnt, will Google in zwei Wochen Street View in die Web-App integrieren. Bis Google eine eigene Karten-App für iOS veröffentlicht, werden hingegen wahrscheinlich noch einige Monate ins Land gehen.

Bei der Benchmark von Anandtech war der A6-Prozessor des iPhone 5 noch mit knapp über einem Gigahertz gemessen worden, was auch TLDToday und andere gemessen hatten. Nach einem Geekbench-Update, das besser an den A6 angepasst ist, gab es aber ein anderes Ergebnis: 1,29 GHz. A newly-published Apple patent application seeks the US rights to Siri, notes AppleInsider. iPhone 5 worldwide sales sorted by region
Sameer Singh of TechThoughts did some number crunching to breakdown iPhone sales based on geographic location. He approximated shipments for sales and looked at the US, UK, Japan and Asia-Pacific in his analysis.
Not surprisingly, he found that demand for the iPhone peaks in the launch quarter and then declines in the subsequent quarters. This trend is seen in the US, UK, Japan and even in Asia-Pacific, which is surprising. Asian-Pacific counties like China are considered to be emerging markets with a large, untapped reservoir of customers. One smartphone feature that has steadily improved over the years is the camera. Once a novelty, the camera is now an important selling point that can influence a person's buying choice. Engadget recently had the opportunity to test the top camera-enabled smartphones at Nokia's Tampere, Finland research and development complex and found that the iPhone outperforms most, but not all, of the competition.

iPhone 5: Akkulaufzeiten sind stark von Signalstärke abhängig
In Apples iPhone-5-Präsentation sah die Auflistung der Akkulaufzeiten sehr einfach aus. In der Realität zeigt sich nun aber wenig überraschend, dass die Laufzeit stark davon abhängt, wie stark die Signalstärke ist. We're pretty sure we've suffered some amount of vision loss from staring at the ridiculously bright paint scheme on Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG E-Cell over the past few years. MB has rolled it out at virtually every auto show it can and we've always topped for a gander, but now we finally have the full production version -- and it's in a slightly more tame but visually perhaps even more stunning color, a sort of chrome blue that even in the flesh looks CG rendered. iPhone 5 battery journal and torture testing
I think the best tests of a battery are real-world ones. Rob Pegoraro tested his iPhone 5 in everyday life and found that it matches up great with competitors. My favorite quote:
"Each figure beats any Android phone I've tested on an LTE signal, although some 3G models have done better."
In other words, the iPhone 5 is a great LTE phone in particular. Pegoraro found he didn't have to charge his phone until into the night, although he's yet to fully test it at a mobile-heavy event like SXSW or CES. I find that when the phone has to strain for signal it drains the battery faster, so we'll have to see how that goes.

The optical nous of the Lumia 920 won't just be visiting Australia soon. European Commission set to fine Microsoft over 2009 browser compliance breach
The European Commission is planning to fine Microsoft for its failure to adhere to a 2009 ruling that required the software giant to offer customers a choice of default web browser. The EU Competition Commissioner, Joaquin Almuni, advised the press that a formal proceeding into the breach -- which Microsoft itself acknowledges -- has begun. Although iOS is widely considered to be all but completely malware-free, Mac security company Intego has created an iOS version of its malware scanner VirusBarrier that works with all iOS 4.0 and higher devices. Eine Statusleiste in der Midlife Crisis

New Java zero-day exploit puts Macs, PCs at risk
Users of Macs that are still running older OS versions such as Snow Leopard and earlier, as well as those running newer OS versions but have installed Java on their own, are advised to turn off the Java functionality in both their browser and system, thanks to a critical new flaw found in all currently-supported versions of Java, including the latest ones. The bug allows attackers to bypass security features and install malware on Macs or Windows machines that have Java installed and active. All versions from Java 5 on up are affected by the flaw.

Apple files for Wisconsin bench trial, Motorola agrees
The ITC-deferred patent counterclaim trial between Apple and Google subsidiary Motorola Mobile has been scheduled for November 5 in the Western District of Wisconsin. On Monday, Apple filed an unopposed motion for the patent suit to be heard as a bench trial. On Tuesday afternoon, Judge Barbara Crabb approved the motion, sending Apple and Google to trial without the encumbrance of a jury. The unopposed nature of the filing is noteworthy, as Motorola Mobility has spoken out against a bench trial in a very similar case versus Microsoft, also scheduled for November.

YouTube for Android update brings preloading to Froyo and Gingerbread, YouTube TV queuing
Just because your Android hardware hasn't been upgraded to the most recent (or, next to the most recent) version of the OS doesn't mean you have to miss new features. Google has shipped a new version of its YouTube app that brings the preloading feature we saw arrive on ICS and above devices back in June to Gingerbread and Froyo. Apple's A6 CPU actually clocked at around 1.3GHz, per new Geekbench report

Apple refutes Samsung's allegations of trial jury misconduct
Late Tuesday, Apple filed its response to Samsung's accusations of jury misconduct, primarily involving the jury foreman. Apple claims that "Samsung is attacking the jury verdict based on alleged juror misconduct" and that the attacks against both the jury as a whole and against Velvin Hogan directly are "baseless, and its jury misconduct motion frivolous on its face." Apple loses Music icon trademark due to MySpace/iLike logo
Apple has been denied a trademark on the orange Music icon used in iOS and elsewhere, reports say. The US Patent and Trademark Office's Trademark Trial and Appeal Board is this week said to have upheld an examiner's decision on the matter, arguing that Apple's logo is too similar to a trademark owned by MySpace. In 2008 a mark for an orange logo with a musical note was awarded to music tracking service iLike. MySpace bought iLike in 2009, but ended up closing the outfit earlier this year.
