Nach Massenschlägerei: Foxconn-Angestellte nehmen Arbeit wieder auf
Nachdem die Arbeit beim Apple-Auftragshersteller Foxconn im chinesischen Taiyuan aufgrund einer Massenschlägerei für einen Tag eingestellt wurde, kehrten die Arbeiter am Dienstag wieder zurück in ihrem Arbeitsplatz. Die genaue Ursache des Aufstands wird noch untersucht. Laut der örtlichen Presse soll es zu den Aufständen gekommen sein, da der Druck zur Massenproduktion des iPhone 5 gegenwärtig

Android Play Store: 25 Milliarden App-Downloads

Google Maps: Verträge wären erst in einem Jahr ausgelaufen

Cisco acquires WiFi data firm ThinkSmart Technologies
Networking kingpin Cisco announced on Wednesday that it had acquired ThinkSmart Technologies, a company that analyzes location data by using WiFi technology. Aiming to be the Zipcar of electric scooters, Scoot Networks has officially launched in San Francisco after months of beta testing. Ideal for areas with problematic parking, the Chinese-made scooters are 100 percent electric with a 20Ah SLA battery each, and there's even a dock built into the dash to charge most Android or iPhone models. Apple/Google mapping split based on turn-by-turn issues
The split between Apple and Google over iOS 6's Maps app can be traced back to a dispute over voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation, say sources for AllThingsD. While turn-by-turn has long been core to the Android version of Maps, the feature was missing from iOS until this month, in part because it wasn't included with the deal that originally brought Google Maps to the iPhone. Apple is said to have wanted the feature very badly, and pushed Google to supply data.

MySpace keeps Apple from Music app icon trademark
Apple's trying to file paperwork to nail down a trademark on its Music app icon, but the trademark is being blocked by a pretty unlikely source: MySpace. And it's not even related to the recent reinvention of the second-place social network, either.
Back in 2008, a music service called iLike registered the mark above on the right, and the trademark office is saying that mark conflicts with the mark Apple is trying to reserve, presumably because they both use orange and two eighth notes. iLike was eventually acquired by MySpace, which means that company now owns the trademark that Apple is trying to pick up.

Users reporting a big bag of hurt with iTunes Match and iOS 6
I don't use iTunes Match and I probably never will. I have seen a constant stream of complaints from people who use the service, with their music libraries unceremoniously deleted, re-downloaded and deleted again -- and that's just one of the many issues I've seen since the service began. Now iOS 6 appears to add another irksome wrinkle into Apple's service.

Netflix for iOS has second screen remote control for PS3
There's a sweet feature that's hidden in Netflix's mobile apps iOS and Android, in the form of a remote for Netflix on Sony's PlayStation 3, Engadget reports.
When you use the iPad or iPhone app to play a video while on the same network as a PlayStation 3 (also running Netflix), you'll see an option to watch on your device or the PlayStation. Opt for the latter, and you can control the PS3 playback with your iOS device.
It's a very cool feature that must have been implemented only recently (which is probably why it's poorly documented). Unfortunately, this trick seems to be limited to the PS3. As long as Netflix can see

Hubble reveals XDF, the deepest view of the universe ever captured
That picture above is the deepest and most detailed view of the universe ever captured. It's called XDF, or eXtreme Deep Field, and was created using Hubble Telescope data from 2003 and 2004. It combines ten years of NASA Hubble Space photographs of a single sky sample into one full-color historic view of the galaxies. Hubble pointed at this patch of the constellation Fornax for fifty days, with an exposure time of 2 million seconds. Apple reportedly had one year left on Google maps contract
It would appear Apple and Google could have kept the Maps app powered by Google for another year, at least according to sources who spoke to the Verge. The decision was made before WWDC this year, and caught Google unaware (according to sources), which is why we still don't have a Google Maps app.
According to the report, Apple felt Google's offering was lagging behind. Plus there's the contractual limitation of turn-by-turn directions (available on Android), as well as the added drama of Google requesting more branding and the inclusion of Latitude.

O2 to sell upcoming HTC smartphone without a wall charger, says it's part of a 'simple vision'
In what could be considered a relatively strange move, O2 has announced that an upcoming, unannounced HTC smartphone won't come with a wall charger inside the box. According to the Euro carrier, this idea is part of a "simple vision" in which it wants "to take chargers out of boxes full stop," adding that research has shown more than 70 percent of UK customers don't have the need for such charger as they already own one with the same compatibility. Google Chrome 22 adds mouse lock for first-person shooters
Google has released a new Chrome build for Windows and Mac platforms. The stable Chrome 22 build brings several new features, including a pointer-lock Javascript API that will enable mouse control in 3D first-person shooters. Rather than interrupting control when the mouse moves outside of a window or hits the screen edge, the cursor is hidden and input is locked until the user hits the Escape key.

Q: I recently bought an Apple AirPort Express and set up a set of speakers to give me AirPlay capability. It works perfectly from my iPhone, my iPad and from iTunes on my Windows 7 PC. A look inside Apple's Lightning cable
Apple's iPhone 5 includes a new Lightning cable that drops the number of available pins from 30 down to eight. Besides its smaller size, the new cable is also reversible and lets you insert the plug without worrying whether it's facing the right way. Apple says the cable has "an adaptive interface," but doesn't provide any additional information on this feature. Apple allegedly buying large quanties of carbon fiber parts
Apple has ordered a sizable number of carbon fiber parts from a Japanese company which began production with the material in March, a Macotakara source claims. Little other information is available, although Apple is said to have ordered "samples" from the company in too large a quantity for that to have actually been the case. That would presumably imply that Apple is putting a carbon fiber device into production, or at least doing large-scale testing.

Coverage is a great app to see where LTE is and where it isn't
AS high-speed LTE services roll out across the U.S., many are wondering when their neighborhood will benefit. The iPhone app Coverage (US$2.99) produces zoomable maps that detail 2G, 3G, 4G and LTE coverage across all four major US cellular providers: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and, for those willing to unlock their iPhones, T-Mobile.
The maps are stored locally, so a data connection isn't necessary. I used it to explore my Arizona neighborhood, the East Coast and West Coast. New survey says iOS 6 users aren't as happy as they were with iOS 5
The word from mobile customer research firm On Device (as reported by TechCrunch) is iOS 5 eked out a bit more customer satisfaction than iOS 6 has thus far. The company checked with 16,000 iPhone users, and even though it's only a small deviation, it's the first time there has been a dip in the numbers measured by On Device.

ABI Research: LTE subscriptions surpassed WiMAX usage in Q2 2012
WiMAX isn't exactly a fading technology, but LTE is more and more the name of the mobile connectivity game -- at least in Japan, South Korea and the US. That's what ABI Research gleaned from its "4G Subscribers, Devices and Networks" market data: according to the study the number of LTE subscribers in Japan, South Korea and the US shot past that of WiMAX users in the last quarter of 2011 through to quarter two of 2012. The firm says 77 percent of LTE devices were smartphones in 2011, and it projects that LTE handsets will make up more than 80 percent of device shipments in 2016. Comparing the iPhone 4/5 displays under a stereomicroscope
Scientist Bryan Jones of the University of Utah wanted to know if the iPhone 5 display really was better than the already-impressive iPhone 4 Retina display. My cheap, simple livestreaming rig: iPhone, Ustream, Zagg and Clingo

Roomba - Ein erstes Fazit
Mittlerweile habe ich eine Türmchenkonstellation gefunden, mit der der Roomba zuverlässig alle Räume bis auf das Bad reinigt und anschließend wieder an seinem Schlafplatz trinken geht. Montag bis Freitag startet er morgens um 9 und sammelt in allen Räumen einen Dreckball auf, der etwa halb so groß ist wie meine Hand und hauptsächlich aus Katzenhaaren besteht. Der Unterschied ist spürbar: Die Wohnung ist - wenig überraschend ;) - sauber. Katzenstreu und Katzenhaare sind kein Problem mehr.
Überraschend angenehm ist die mitgelieferte Wifi-Steuerung, mit der man den Roomba wie ein ferngesteuertes Auto durch die Wohnung fahren und somit Katzen jagen kann.

Route1 debuts MobiKey Classic 2 for remote logins
On Tuesday, security and ID management company Route1 debuted its latest security solution for OS X and enterprise users, the MobiKey Classic 2. The USB key, which is clientless and driverless and so works on both Macs and Windows machines, contains an embedded smartcard so that users can access remote networks with very high security, meaning their own notebooks or other devices never actually store secure data that could be lost or stolen. Access stays behind a company firewall and prevent the transmission of malware.

Mit iOS 6 stellte Apple auf eine eigene Kartenlösung um, die momentan in Teilen aber noch ein Rückschritt im Vergleich zur bis iOS 5 eingesetzten und auf Google Maps basierenden App darstellt.
