Mac mini catches 2010 Mac Pro in benchmark tests
As if we needed further confirmation of the rapidly closing gap between the Mac mini and what is supposed to be Apple's top-of-the-line offering -- the Mac Pro -- it looks like the latest mini refresh has brought the pint-sized PC's performance nearly in line with the previous generation of Apple's tower. According to benchmark tests by Macminiloco, the brand new minis are rapidly approaching the standards set by the 2010 Mac Pro.
Apple gave the Pro an extremely modest update in June 2012, adding just a small processor and RAM upgrade. The current Mac Pro is still without features like Thunderbo

Apple's Tim Cook sees Microsoft Surface as a 'fairly compromised, confusing product'
Anyone wondering what Apple CEO Tim Cook thinks of Microsoft's new Surface tablet didn't have to wait long to get an answer. Cook offered a fairly blunt assessment of the device on the company's quarterly earnings call today, saying that while he hasn't personally played with one, "we're reading that it's a fairly compromised, confusing product." Apple ships 26.9M iPhones, 14M iPads in latest quarter
Apple today posted its fiscal fourth quarter financial results, shedding light on yet another record-breaking quarter for iPhone and iPad sales. Apple 4Q 2012 earnings reported
Apple has announced its fourth quarter 2012 earnings, which will be discussed on the upcoming earnings call. From the press release:
'We're very proud to end a fantastic fiscal year with record September quarter results,' said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. 'We're entering this holiday season with the best iPhone, iPad, Mac and iPod products ever, and we remain very confident in our new product pipeline.'
'We're pleased to have generated over $41 billion in net income and over $50 billion in operating cash flow in fiscal 2012,' said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO.'Looking ahead to the first fiscal quarter of 2013, we expect revenue of about $52 billion and diluted earnings per share of about $11.75.'

Amazon Q3 2012 earnings: $13.18 billion revenue, net loss of $274 million
Amazon has just released its earnings for the third quarter of the year and it looks like it's slightly off analysts' expectations. The company reported $13.18 billion in revenue (a growth of 27 percent) and an operating loss of $28 million, with net income standing at a loss of $274 million. As Amazon notes, though, a chunk of that, some $169 million, comes from losses resulting from its investment in LivingSocial -- it says the figure is "primarily attributable to its impairment charge of certain assets, including goodwill." Warner, Redbox agree to 28 day delay on disc rentals, UltraViolet support for Redbox Instant
Redbox and Warner Bros. were at odds in January when Warner wanted to extend the window before discs hit kiosks to 56 days, but now the two have come to an agreement that keeps it at a 28 day delay. When their previous deal expired Redbox said it would find other ways to obtain discs and offer them day and date to its customers, although actually finding them in kiosks could be tough. iPad mini price blamed on low touchscreen yields
The iPad mini's price, which sits at the high end of analyst expectations, has been partially attributed to yield issues with the tablet's 7.9-inch touchscreen. A DigiTimes report suggests the 7.9-inch touchscreen modules in the Mini are only approximately $5 cheaper than the 9.7-inch panels used in full-size iPad models.

Sprint reveals new data plans or 4G tablets
Sprint will soon introduce new rate plans for 4G tablets, undercutting other carriers on pricing for 4G tablets. The carrier announced today that it will be offering customers up to 20 percent more data than AT&T and Verizon for the same price. Sprint is also going to temporarily waive the activation fee on all 3G and 4G LTE tablets.

Apple posts record quarter, $36B in revenue
Apple has announced financial results for its fiscal 2012 fourth quarter ended September 29, 2012. The company posted quarterly revenue of $36 billion and quarterly net profit of $8.2 billion. The Q4 results compare to revenue of $28.3 billion and net profit of $6.6 billion in the same quarter last year. Gross margin was 40.0 percent compared to 40.3 percent in the year-ago quarter, while international sales accounted for 60 percent of the quarterly revenue.

Extreme Orthodox Christians in Russia have upped their complaints about Apple's iconic logo, according to CNet. This specific group of Orthodox Christians say that Apple's logo represents a "blasphemous" attack on the church since it can be seen as a representation of the Christian mythology of Satan tempting Eve in the Garden of Eden.

ASUS PadFone 2 review: two times is a charm for this phone-in-tablet combo
It's only been half a year since the peculiar PadFone made its much-delayed entry into select markets, and earlier this week, ASUS' launch of its second-gen phone-in-tablet brings us back to this old question: are we better off with just one mobile screen instead of two? Judge excuses himself for Siri patent suit
Apple is facing a new patent infringement lawsuit in the US over Siri that was filed on behalf of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The lawsuit is off to a bumpy start as the judge assigned to the case recused himself over a conflict of interest, according to CNET.
When he stepped down, District Court Judge Gary Sharpe pointed to a law that says, "Any conduct that would lead a reasonable [person] knowing all the circumstances to the conclusion that the judge's 'impartiality might reasonably be questioned' is a basis for the judge's disqualification." Apple posts Fusion Drive FAQ
Have you just ordered a new Mac? Today, Apple posted a Knowledge Base article regarding the new Fusion Drive for the refreshed iMac and Mac mini.
The storage technology, which was launched this past Tuesday, combines flash and traditional hard drive technology to create a hybrid system that "combines the performance of Flash storage with the capacity of a hard drive."
According to the FAQ, Fusion Drive requires a special version of Disk Utility. This release is "unique," and Apple mentions that you cannot use older Disk Utility releases with the new setup.
Fusion Drive will allow users to add at most one extra partition.

Mac mini catches up to 2010 Mac Pro in benchmark tests
The new Mac mini has reportedly reached performance levels comparable to the previous-generation Xserve and Mac Pro desktops released in 2010, according to benchmark tests posted by colocation service provider Macminicolo. The overall design has not substantially changed since the last Minis were introduced in 2011, however the combination of additional RAM and Intel's Ivy Bridge processors brings a significant boost in performance.

New 12W iPad Charger can charge older iPads faster
When Apple introduced the fourth-generation iPad and its new iPad mini, the company also unveiled a new 12W Power Adapter. The USB adapter is compatible with all versions of the iPad from the second generation forward and will allegedly charge these models faster than the stock 10W adapter. New iBooks Author supports LaTeX and MathML
LaTeX is document markup system (similar to the popular Markdown) that's popular among high-level academia and mathematics authors. iBooks Author 2, which was released during Apple's big event, now supports the LaTeX protocol. Sprint sells 1.5 million iPhones in Q3 2012
Sprint is the third major US wireless operator to announce its earnings this week. The struggling carrier, now being acquired by Japan's SoftBank, reported that it sold 1.5 million iPhones in the quarter that ended on September 30. Forty percent of these sales were to new customers.

Siri: Apple wird wegen Sprachassistenten verklagt

The Mac Mini Vault has already grabbed a new Mac mini and taken it apart. You can read through the site's teardown and analysis right now. The short version is that much of the mini's design is the same. As you can see above, with the new version on the left and the 2011 version on the right. Sprint sells 1.5 million iPhones, 1 million other smartphones, but makes a net loss of $767 million
Sprint's latest financials show that while the network is slowly stemming the flow of cash from its veins, it's not yet there in terms of profitability. The country's third biggest carrier is taking a hit on a $767 million net loss and an operating loss of $231 billion. The business managed to bring in service revenues of $7.3 billion, but had to eat a $397 million write-down on costs related to Network Vision and the Nextel shutdown. On the customer side, it added a further 900,000 users, sold 1.5 million iPhones and a further million "LTE smartphones" in the three month period. Naturally, it's been a busy three months for Sprint after it reported a $629 million operating loss in the second quarter of the year. Whoa there! The next Nexus just got an early reveal over at UK retailer Carphone Warehouse. Delivery is currently pegged for October 30th and it's got brand new Android 4.1.2. ITC Judge finds Samsung in violation of four Apple patents
In an initial determination by Administrative Judge Thomas Pender at the US International Trade Commission, Samsung has been found to be in violation of four of Apple's patents, including one design patent. One utility, and one design patent were found to have not been infringed by the Korean manufacturer. The ruling adds to Samsung's legal woes in the US and if found to be valid by the ITC six-member commission could result in sales bans of the infringing products in the US.

Foursquare for Android updated for more social check-ins, shares club-hopping with the world
There's a good reason Foursquare has an Overshare badge. Still, that hasn't stopped the location service from rolling out an update to Android users that simplifies broadcasting your position to the world. The Android check-in screen now matches that of the iOS app with a more streamlined appearance that more quickly shares updates with Facebook and Twitter; mentioning friends is easier as well. Borderlands for iOS confirmed, to launch Oct. 31
If you didn't quite get your fill of the Borderlands universe with last month's release of Borderlands 2, Gearbox is about to invade your iOS devices with a new title exclusively for mobile called Borderlands Legends. It was announced by Entertainment Weekly. Interestingly, the game does away with the first-person perspective of the console titles in favor of a top-down approach, letting you control your entire four-person squad at once.
Legends features the familiar cel-shaded aesthetic as its bigger brothers, as well as similar enemy types including bandits and wild skags. Loot lovers will be happy to hear that you can still gather items from the world, either for personal use or to sell to vendors for upgrades. Action

ITC rules that Samsung violates four Apple patents covering design, touch
The back and forth continues.
