iPhone tops J.D. Power satisfaction survey ... again
Every year at about this time, J.D. Power and Associates releases the results of the U.S. Wireless Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Study. For the eighth consecutive year, Apple is at the top of the list in terms of customer satisfaction for smartphones.
On a 1,000-point scale, Apple ranked first with a score of 849, performing well in all key factors used to determine the overall score. Physical design, which makes up 23 percent of the overall satisfaction figure, and ease of operation (22 percent) w

Amazon's 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD impressions
Hey, check out this beaut. It's the 8.9-inch version of Amazon's new Fire HD tablet. The company trotted several of the 7-inch models, but the big daddy was a rare bird indeed -- thankfully, however, we were able to get up close and personal with the thing. It's almost a shame that this guy shares a name with last year's model. This feels like a completely different bird -- Amazon set out to make a slate that can compete with some of the top models out there, and from some passing impressions, this thing seems to stack up. Amazon: the Kindle Keyboard is sticking around
Old habits can be hard to break, and while Amazon made the point pretty clear that it's shifted toward a world of touch controls on its devoted e-readers, the company hasn't completely abandoned the Kindle Keyboard. The reader formerly known as the Kindle 3 is still available on Amazon's page in its 3G form and will continue to be so, at least for the time being, at $139 for the Special Offers version and $189 without. Judge tosses lawsuit over strength of iPhone 4 glass
A US District Judge, Edward Davila, has thrown out a class action lawsuit filed on behalf of iPhone 4 owners. Initially launched by Californian Betsalel Williamson, the suit complained that Apple misrepresented the strength of the glass in the device. Williamson says that after knocking a new iPhone 4 off the arm of a chair, the device broke, "resulting in spider cracks across the back glass panel" which forced him to get a replacement.

AT&T expands LTE, plans more launches
Good news for AT&T customers who are tired of cruising on 3G. The wireless carrier announced on Thursday that it is expanding its 4G LTE footprint to seven new markets now and another 30-40 by the end of the year. It'll bring LTE to outlying cities like Anchorage, Alaska and smaller ones like Nashua, New Hampshire. By the end of this year, AT&T will cover 100 markets in the US.
The list of markets that'll see LTE in 2012 include: Anchorage, Ak.; Rochester, N.Y.; Jacksonville and Ft. Ask iLounge: Backing Up Phone Numbers to iCloud
Q: I have just bought an iPhone 4 and want to use iCloud to back my phone numbers up every time I connect to my Wi-Fi network. The problem is we have a Windows XP desktop which we bought in 2001. It does say we are using iCloud but how do I know that my numbers have been backed up, and if I lose my iPhone how can I get them back? Amazon's new Kindle line-up now available for pre-order
Well, that didn't take too long. As promised, Amazon's entire line-up of new Kindles is now available to order on the retailer's site (in the US, at least), from the basic $69 Kindle to the top-end Kindle Fire HD 8.9 with 4G LTE. Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Leather Cover hands-on
Those prone to throwing their e-readers into backpacks and messenger bags know the value of a good case -- and Amazon clearly does, as well. Last time around, the company offered up a lighted version for the Kindle Touch -- obviously that technology's no longer needed on the Paperweight. Apple retail: Swedish store confirmed, Temecula break-in
Apple has confirmed plans to launch its first retail store in Sweden. As previously rumored, the outlet will open in Täby Centrum, a mall in the suburbs of Stockholm. The debut has been set for 10AM on September 15th; notably the Täby store will also be Apple's first in all of Scandinavia, despite the relative wealth of markets like Sweden and Norway.

Kindle Fire, meet the new hotness. The holiday shopping crowd may have fallen in love with Amazon's tablet last year, but there's a new Fire in town. We snuck a Fire into today's Amazon event, and placed up next to the new model, the difference is clear: the Fire felt a bit OEMed and boxy, sort of a remake of the BlackBerry PlayBook, from a hardware perspective, at least. This is clearly not the case with the seven-inch HD -- it really feels like a reasonably high-end tablet with an extremely nice price point. Weathercube is an interesting but eccentric iOS app
Weathercube is an interesting and graphically pleasing approach to giving you the weather on your iPhone or iPod touch. It is not universal, but will run on an iPad in 2x mode. It sells for US $1.99.
Weathercube supports several gestures which will get you to extended forecasts, other pre-set cities, and even the settings. It provides a lot of information, and swiping the screen gets you a slick animation that looks like the cube is turning in perspective. If you look at the app icon you can get an idea of the animation effect.

Of course, today's event wasn't just about the Fires. Amazon's still got a dog in the devoted e-reader race as well. The big news here, of course, is the company's entry into the world of lighted E Ink readers -- coming several months after the release of Barnes & Noble's own Nook Simple Touch With GlowLight. The front-lit technology here is proprietary, of course. Amazon mentioned some four years in R&D on glowing alone. And the difference is pretty immediately clear: it's all about distribution. Looking at the Nook for a second, you can immediately isolate the top as the light source, with a stronger concentration and somewhat even distribution. The Kindle's light however, is hard to spot,

Nokia? War da was?
Da ist es also: Das neue Flagschiff von Nokia. Das Lumia 920. 185 Gramm schwer, mit 4,5”-Retina Display, Full HD-Videokamera mit Stabilisator, 32GB Platz und kabelloser Stromladung per Induktion. Dazu endlich das neue Windows Phone 8! Und erscheinen wird es irgendwann später in diesem Jahr.

Ja, richtig gehört: Wenige Tage vor der Vorstellung des nächsten iPhones kündigt Nokia für irgendwann später ein Telefon an. Das ist größer und schwerer als das aktuelle iPhone und bietet nur die Hälfte an Speicherplatz. Dafür braucht es zum Laden aber kein Stromkabel mehr, sondern eine Matte. Die dann das Kabel hat.
Ich verstehe das nicht.
Windows Phone finde ich interessant. Die Nokia-Hardware finde ich ebenfalls interessant. Aber schon die 32GB Speicher sind für mich ein Ausschlusskriterium. Das war bei Apple vor zwei Jahren aktuell. Apple may kill iPhone 3GS, introduce 8GB iPhone 4S
Apple is planning to axe the iPhone 3GS, and make the iPhone 4 the company's entry-level smartphone, retail sources tell The Telegraph. It's expected that the phone will probably be given away free on contract. The sources add that an 8GB version of the iPhone 4S could be launched, and that the iPhone 5 will come in three different storage capacities like its predecessor, shipping on the week of September 21st.

More tablets with more ways to connect! Jeff Bezos has just announced another flavor of the Kindle Fire HD, this one offering connectivity to AT&T's 4G LTE network. San Jose court: iPhone owners can't sue over broken glass
In a victory for common sense, US District Judge Edward Davila threw out a class action lawsuit from a group of iPhone 4 owners claiming that Apple misrepresented the strength of the glass materials used in the phone.

Kindle Paperwhite: Amazon beleuchtet das E-Ink-Display

Amazon hat soeben einen neuen Kindle vorgestellt. Das Modell Paperwhite verfügt über ein beleuchtetes Display mit 212ppi und hat damit eine deutlich höhere Auflösung als die bisherigen Modelle: 62 %, um genau zu sein. 9,1mm dünn ist der Paperwhite, die Batterie soll acht Wochen halten. Jegliche Knöpfe gehören der Vergangenheit an, alles läuft über den Touchscreen. 119 Dollar kostet wie WiFi-Version, für 3G-Verbindungen muss man 179 Dollar investieren. Los geht's am 1. Oktober, zum Start in Deutschland ist nichts bekannt.

I've harped on this before, but it bears repeating: Apple is in for the fight of its life when it comes to making the TV experience better. Huai'an students 'forced' to build iPhone 5 at Foxconn
"Thousands" of students are being "forced" to help build iPhone 5s as a part of an internship with Foxconn, says the Shanghai Daily. University students from Huai'an in Jiangsu province are said to have been driven to a Foxconn factory after the plant couldn't get enough regular workers to assemble the smartphone. A new set of photos posted at a Chinese site, NetEase, depict what is allegedly a rear shell for Apple's upcoming mini iPad model. The part notably bears some traits of the iPhone 5, specifically dual grills on the base and a new, smaller dock connector port. Research: iPod touch benefits workers with autism
We often hear about iOS devices being used in schools and in the workplace, but a recent study from researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University shows how the device can be beneficial for those struggling with autism.
The study was recently published in the the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation and is part of a longer four-year study being conducted in conjunction with Virginia Career Support Services and Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services.

iPhone about prestige for smaller carriers
GigaOM talked to Pat Riordan, CEO of regional carrier Cellcom, about the iPhone and why this small wireless provider decided to add Apple's smartphone to its lineup. Cellcom is one of seven small carriers that started carrying the iPhone earlier this year.
According to Riordan, selling the iPhone is not just about numbers; it's also about prestige. The iPhone is desirable to customers, who were leaving Cellcom to get the Apple handset elsewhere. Würden es unsere Redaktionsrichtlinien zulassen, würde ich den täglich neuen Spypics von iPhone 5 und iPad mini maximal zwei Sätze widmen – der Vollständigkeit halber. Aber ein lesenswerter Artikel benötigt nunmal eine anständige Einleitung, einen multimedial bestückten Hauptteil und einen im idealfall witzigen Schluss, der zum Nachdenken anregen sollte.
In diesem Artikel verzichte ich aber auf die empfohlene Gliederung, auch weil ich nach dutzenden iPhone-5- und iPad-mini-Fotos wirklich nicht mehr weiss was ich anderes schreiben sollte als die Male zuvor.

Apple unveiled a third beta of OS X 10.8.2 developers late Wednesday, just a week after the previous release. The rumors didn't lead us astray this time around: T-Mobile's latest QWERTY device, the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze Q Relay 4G has been officially announced. While we're still waiting to hear pricing and availability (aside from the usual "coming weeks," that is), we have confirmation that the 4-inch Super AMOLED device will offer ICS, HSPA+ 42Mbps connectivity and a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor. The World Ends With You is one of the best role-playing games of the last five years. It was originally released by Square Enix on the Nintendo DS, and it not only made great use of an original setting (it's based in the highways and byways of a mystical version of Tokyo's biggest shopping district), but of some very innovative touchscreen combat controls. Now, almost five years after its initial release, Square Enix has brought the title over to Apple's iOS platform, and the game fits very well on Apple's larger screen.

If you've been taking your trusty ethernet cable for granted since 1985, then we don't blame you -- that's when the IEEE 802.3 standard was first published and it hasn't had a full revision since 2008. Nokia Lumia 920 optical image stabilization demoed, faked
Alongside the launch of the Nokia Lumia 920 phone earlier today, a new feature called "PureView" made its debut. One benefit of PureView is Nokia's optical image stabilization (OIS), as demonstrated in promotional media, featuring a couple recording with the phone as they ride down a river road. The ad showed side-by-side video, representing the OIS feature in action. Nokia has since confirmed in an apology that the video was not shot with the Lumia 920 as originally represented, but by a film crew with physical stabilization, on a truck riding along side the couple.

Adobe updates Photoshop Touch for iOS, Android
Adobe has updated its mobile photo-editing app Photoshop Touch to version 1.3, bringing Retina display support for the new iPad and new support for print-resolution images up to 12 megapixels with up to 16 layers. In addition, the program adds two new effects, a new three-finger tap, support for Apple's Photo Stream and overall smother performance in the organizer, tutorial browser and file picker. There is also a new "pixel nudging" mode for more precise movements.

Four trials scheduled for German Apple versus Samsung battle
While the opening salvos in the Apple versus Samsung smartphone patent legal fight has died down, the battle continues in Mannheim, Germany between the two titans. Four separate trials are scheduled between the pair between September and mid-October. Looks like WP8 is going to get a lot more love from Verizon Wireless than WP7 ever did. Apple issued a minor update to iMovie for OS X on Wednesday that addressed an issue related to third-party QuickTime components (such as Perian, the now-in-beta Flip4Mac WMV Player 3.0 or other non-Apple add-ons designed to expand QuickTime's compatibility with other file formats) that was preventing iMovie from opening. The update is large in size -- 1.08GB -- as it replaces the application entirely rather than just patching it. Specific changes were not detailed.
