AMD Trinity review roundup: good bang for your entry-level buck

It's never easy playing second fiddle, but AMD is trying their best to keep Intel on their toes with its latest line of Trinity desktop chips. We were introduced to the Trinity last week, but now the official reviews are in from the usual specialist sites. The consensus seems to be that it provides solid performance for the price. The Trinity A10-5800K is in the same class as the Core i5 but sells at $130 on NewEgg, which is the going rate for the

iPhone 5, 4S are Apple's greenest phones yet

Apple says it makes the "the most environmentally responsible products in our industry," and an independent study has backed up this claim. iFixit and Healthystuff.org dissected 36 smartphones and analyzed their chemical composition using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The study graded the phones based on the presence of know hazardous chemicals like bromine, mercury and lead. Over the years, Apple has steadily improved its products moving from a "high concern" rating for the original iPhone to a "low concern" rating for the

Ask iLounge: Restoring Apps from iTunes vs iCloud

Q: Thanks for the great Ask iLounge article Restoring Apps and App folder layouts. I have two followup questions: My iPhone 4 was backed up to iCloud, and was NOT set up to sync with iTunes. iPhone bell accessories will definitely wake you up

During my sophomore year in college back in 1976, I had a roommate named Chuck who had problems waking up when his alarm went off. Not much worked to wake up Chuck, including punching him and dumping water on him, and it was the downfall of his college career. Perhaps if I could travel back in time to 1976 with an iPhone and the new iBell (at right above, US$38) or iBell Mini accessories (at left above, $27), Chuck could graduate from the University of Colorado and change the course of history I

Lockitron plans to help you unlock your door with your phone

Keyless entry using your iPhone isn't a new thing, but Lockitron has introduced a system that allows keyless entry for your home with some extras geared toward the iPhone. With the US$149 Lockitron, a box fits over your existing deadbolt and allows you to manage your door locks from anywhere via SMS or the Internet. It will allow you to share access with family and friends, which can keep you from running to the closest hardware store to get multiple keys made. If you have an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, you also can use Bluetooth 4 to have your door automatically unlock as you approach it. With knock sensors, notifications and more, it's a pretty nifty gadget.

Their tipster is also reiterating the specs we've seen before, talking up a Windows 7.8 handset with 256MB RAM, 800MHz CPU and 5-megapixel camera that's destined to stand between the Asha and

Why a 7.85" mini makes sense

The iPad mini rumors have been going on a good long time. Here at TUAW, we've long since moved past "will they or won't they." I want to address the "most likely iPad mini" scenario that many pundits have agreed upon. A 1024x768 pixel 7"-ish unit offers a budget, non-Retina scenario that allows minis to run existing iPad software without modification. At 7", an iPad mini is workable, as it just (barely) allows the device to retain its base interactive integrity. As Rich Gaywood has long since pointed out, a 7.85" device offers a much better compromise than 7-inch model, but more about that in a bit. The Retina iPhone was first introduced with the iPhone 4. Its 960x640 display enhanced the screen sca

Nissan NSC-2015 self-driving car with LTE and smartphone connectivity (test-ride with video)

NCC-1701 is the machine that took the world's imaginations to strange new worlds in the '60s. If Nissan has its way, NSC-2015 will be the machine that keeps us out of strange new parking lots. It's a concept car from Nissan, part of the CEATEC 2012 Smart Mobility Zero exhibit that has half the show floor covered by crazy electric-powered cars of all shapes and sizes. Nissan's Leaf is one of the more conventional looking ones, but the technology that lets it drive itself down the road is far from standard. We just took it for a spin, so please cruise down past the break to read how it went. Gallery:
