It's been a full decade since the first Roomba scuttled off the assembly line and onto the floors of slatternly geeks. Understandably, iRobot's looking back over the period, revealing that since then, it's sold over six million of the units -- with each one covering an average of 705 miles in its lifetime. Must See HDTV (September 17th - 23rd)
Football is officially in swing, and this week we've got a couple of big college matchups with LSU taking on Auburn and Michigan vs. Notre Dame. iMessage was a bit rocky for some today
After a rough patch last week for iCloud, Apple has been having some issues today with iMessage. Reports on MacRumors and Twitter indicate some people were having trouble using Apple's SMS replacement. Problems included messages not sending and error messages.
It's not a problem for everyone using the service, but it had many Apple users gritting their teeth. Many people are now reporting the service is working again, but my personal experience with iMessage is that most of the time it works, but several times a week the service stumbles and my iPhone has to revert to standard SMS.

Leica reveals S-System medium format digital photography lineup
Leica wasn't about to let everyone else hog the spotlight at Photokina this year. The company took the wraps off more products than you could possible cram into one post (or two, or three). But among the more intriguing is certainly the new S-System -- an update its pro-series medium format line. The sensor and accompanying board have all been refreshed, with the 30 x 44mm sensor cramming 37.5 megapixels into its expansive CCD surface.

Concept video shows a better Spotlight for iOS
Designer Cody Sanfilippo put together this concept video of how Spotlight on iOS could work, and it's quite impressive. The current implementation of Spotlight for iOS (accessed by swiping left on your iOS device's homescreen) is fairly useless; while the search is very thorough, the list of items you get is not very helpful, and you generally end up seaching through the list almost as long as it would have taken you to just go find whatever you're looking for in your actual iPhone.
But Sanfilippo's concept wisely separates the found items out into a filtered window, and then crams as much information about each found item as possible there. There's even a solid bit of functionality: You can not only access apps and other information directly f

Leica launching new Leica M in early 2013, Leica M-E out now
Do you need a stylish, undoubtedly expensive German camera early in 2013? Perhaps right now? Leica's got you covered on both fronts, announcing today that it's Leica M line is getting a new iteration in "early 2013" and a budget version is already available, starting today, in the Leica M-E. Apple shares toy with $700 barrier in after-hours trading
Apple stock is flirting with the $700 mark in after-hours trading, according to NASDAQ data. The stock closed at about $699.78, and a slight fluctuation quickly helped it reach the $700 level. Since then however, the stock has been repeatedly dipping below the milestone only to top it again.

AMD CFO Thomas Seifert calls it quits, Devinder Kumar takes his place on an interim basis
Advanced Micro Devices' Senior VP and Chief Financial Officer, Thomas Seifert, has decided to leave the AMD three short years after joining the company. Google acquires iOS photo app Snapseed
Snapseed is a popular iOS photography app around here at TUAW -- not only have we spotlighted it a few different times, but the app also won a coveted Apple Design Award back in 2011. Pegatron reportedly nabs 50 to 60 percent of iPad mini orders, breaks up Foxconn's monopoly
While folks are waiting for their precious new iPhones to arrive on their doorsteps, word has it that the leaky iPad mini has unsurprisingly entered mass production, but with a twist. According to today's front page news on Taiwan's Economic Daily News, reports from two local securities firms claim that Pegatron's managed to nab a staggering 50 to 60 percent of iPad mini orders from Apple, meaning Foxconn is finally no longer the sole assembler of iPads. Pad & Quill has emerged within the past year as a great competitor for the DODOcase. I managed to play a bit with the review cases that Steve Sande reviewed in January at Macworld/iWorld and was impressed with the build quality for the iPad. Briefly: Interactive 4G coverage map, Combat Mission demo
CNNMoney has posted a new interactive map that allows users to see the difference in 4G coverage offered by AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint. Verizon currently provides the greatest coverage, offering 4G service in 371 markets nation wide, while AT&T and Sprint cover 65 and 19 markets respectively. AT&T has stated that it will be expanding into more than 100 cities by the end of 2012, while Sprint is hoping to expand into 100 additional cities "in the coming months." Meanwhile, Verizon plans to cover up to 400 locations by the end of the year.

iMessage suffering from failed, delayed messages
Some users of Apple's iMessage service are having problems with delayed messages, or even messages failed to be delivered at all, according to complaints. In some circumstances people are getting read receipt notification errors. The issue in fact appears to be inconsistent as a rule, affecting some people but not others, and even those with trouble are occasionally getting a reprieve.

Rumor Scorecard: iPhone 5 edition
Now that the iPhone 5 launch event has come and gone, it's time for a thoroughly unscientific and begrudging look back at several months worth of rumors.
Predictably, the farther from the path of physically-based evidence the rumors strayed, the more inaccurate they became. But the overarching theme this rumor cycle was parts leaks -- physical evidence is usually the best kind when it comes to rumors, and we had plenty of it this year when it came to the iPhone 5. In fact, anyone who paid even a modest amount of attention to the rumors these past few months probably wasn't the least bit surprised by the iPhone 5's features. iPhone 5 pre-orders begin leaving China
If you're anything like me, you ordered the iPhone 5 as soon as you could last week, just minutes after midnight PT as the Apple Store went live for pre-orders. And if you did happen to get in on that early pre-order frenzy, we've got good news: Your iPhone 5 has started the trip on the slow boat from China. As you can see above, the iPhone 5 shipments have headed out from Zheng Zhou, and are presumably on their way to America, where they'll then be distributed out to all of the various customers.

Rogue Amoeba does magical things with audio on the Mac. I've long been a fan of their software, and one of their best applications just got a big update with Fission 2. If you've ever wanted to split, edit, join or otherwise mangle audio clips regardless of format, Fission is a great tool. Dan Deacon takes over your smartphone with clever app
Now this is terrific. Dan Deacon, a musician currently on tour, has an app for iPhone (and Android) that allows him to take over the screens in an audience and display colors or make sounds. The audience becomes more of a part of the show, even part of the instrumentation.

Security researchers dissect Flame's handling program, find three new viruses 'at large'
It seems that there's more than two out-of-control computer viruses roaming around the Middle East. Security researchers think that a further three could be operating "at large," with one positively identified on machines in Iran and Lebanon. Teams from Symantec and Kaspersky have separately found that the Flame malware had the electronic equivalent of a "handler," a program called NEWSFORYOU, which is also in charge of three viruses that are code-named SP, SPE and IP. iPhone owners looking forward to the new Maps application in iOS 6 might be disappointed when they try to search for points of interest, says Josh Carr, former TUAW writer and founder of Rocky Mountain Mac Repair.

iPad tops JD Power's tablet survey
A recent study by J.D. Power and Associates suggests iPad owners are overwhelmingly happy with their tablet purchase. The survey of 1,900 tablet owners found that the iPad ranks the highest for owner satisfaction. Respondents gave the iPad high marks for its performance, ease of operation, styling and design, and features.

iOS 6 Maps integrates with Yandex search in Russia
For Russian data, Apple's iOS 6 Maps app is integrated with a popular local search engine, Yandex, according to TechCrunch sources. If a person browses Russian maps, the Yandex geosearch API is said to kick in, presenting basic details about streets, businesses, and other content. Google acquires iOS photo app Snapseed
In a post on the company blog today, Nik Software, developer of iOS photo editing/sharing app Snapseed, announced that it had been acquired by Google. According to The Verge, the acquisition will see Nik's Snapseed developers relocating to Google headquarters in Mountain View in order to work directly on Google's social layer, Google+. The future of Snapspeed's iOS app, which provides image editing and sharing capabilities in a manner similar to Facebook's Instagram, is as yet unknown.

Shazam hits 250 million users, lets you tag TV shows
Shazam is one of those nearly magical apps that has been around since 2008. If you hear some music, you use Shazam to identify it by just holding it up and allowing the app to match it up with its database. The service makes money off partnerships and a sort of subscription services for its hardcore users.
I've noticed the Shazam logo on a few ads here and there, and they've had some high profile partnerships like American Idol, where using the app will bring up song lists and iTunes links. Shazam now lets you tag any TV show on any channel, and will tell you who the actor is or what song is playing. There's even support for sports scores, although local programming won't register.

VirnetX refiles ITC complaint against Apple
VirnetX has refiled a complaint with the US International Trade Commission against Apple, according to an announcement. The new filing is being made jointly with Science Applications International Corporation, and is meant to deal with a "procedural standing issue" that led the ITC to dismiss the previous complaint. The iPhone 5 is now also included. VirnetX is asking the ITC to investigate Apple's imports, and eventually hand down orders banning them, and blocking any US sales of allegedly patent-infringing products.

Laut der Korea Times könnte der Nachfolger des Samsung Galaxy S III bereits im März nächsten Jahres vorgestellt werden. New Samsung Galaxy ad attacks the iPhone 5
Samsung released a print ad on Sunday attacking the yet-to-be-released iPhone 5. The ad lists a side-by-side comparison (known as "The Ben Franklin Close") of the iPhone 5's features and those of the Galaxy S III.
The Galaxy's larger screen is right at the top of the list (not necessarily a good thing), which goes on to address the display, battery life, RAM and so on.

In amongst the deluge of new cameras at Canon's press event here in Cologne, Germany was this looker. It's the PowerShot SX160 IS, a nice-looking, if somewhat beefy mid-range superzoom point-and-shoot. Schon jetzt muss man mit langen Wartezeiten für das iPhone 5 rechnen. Vor Oktober wird es für die meisten Leute nichts werden. Nun ist Apple mit offiziellen Zahlen rausgerückt. Satte zwei Millionen Vorbestellungen sollen in Cupertino innerhalb der ersten 24 Stunden eingegangen sein. Zum Vergleich: das iPhone 4S hatte im gleichen Zeitraum "gerade mal" 600.000 kaufwillige Kunden. Enttäuschte Early User dürfen also jetzt schon ihre Zelte vor den Apple Stores aufschlagen, dort wird die Nachfrage ab Freitag wohl nicht kleiner ausfallen. iPhone 5: LTE in Deutschland und der Schweiz sehr eingeschränkt möglich
Für die Schweizer ist es eine gute Nachricht, für die Deutschen eine schlechte: Mit dem iPhone 5 lässt sich eingeschränkt die schnelle Datenverbindung LTE (bald) nutzen. Nach der Apple-Präsentation des neuen Smartphones gingen wir zunächst davon aus, dass die Breitbandtechnologie in der Schweiz und Österreich nicht verfügbar ist.

Apple announced the iPhone 5 last week, and pre-orders of the device were very impressive. According to the Washington Post, Wall Street responded favorably to the news of the iPhone 5, and brisk trading pushed Apple's stock to another record high.

Canon could be facing a costly drop in production of both its digital cameras and laser printers, following reports that widespread protests in China have forced it close most of its factories in that country. It's a similar story at Panasonic, which is said to have had one of its plants "sabotaged" by Chinese workers. Sword of Fargoal 2 and the iControlPad 2 both head to Kickstarter
Two big followup iPhone projects are looking to Kickstarter for funding. First up, the developers of Sword of Fargoal 2 have launched a US$50,000 campaign. The first game in that series was a relatively early hit on iPhone. The sequel has a much larger scope and is expected to hit several platforms, including iOS. iPhone 5: Apple veröffentlicht Karte mit geplanten Auslieferungsdaten
Seit dem vergangenen Freitag können Apple-Fans endlich das iPhone 5 vorbestellen. Wer schnell genug war, hat das Glück das iPhone bereits Ende dieser Woche am Freitag, den 21. September entgegen zu nehmen. Für einige Insel-Bewohner könnte die Lieferung innerhalb Deutschlands allerdings etwas länger dauern.

iCloud: Solaranlage für Apples Server-Farm ist fast fertig

A6: Apple hat Chip selbst designt – schneller als Quad-Core-Chips

RIPE NCC handing out its last block of IPv4 addresses, tries to fend off internet survivalism
In a world where IPv6 lives and IPv4 addresses are scarce, network providers must fight for survival or at least, claim their IP blocks quickly. The RIPE NCC, the regional internet registry for Asia, Europe and the Middle East, warns that it's down to assigning its last set of 16.8 million IPv4 addresses as of this weekend.
