Hands-on with Kobo's Glo and Mini e-readers (video)
Earlier today we had a nice sit-down with Kobo, where we got some quality hands-on time with the company's Arc Android tablet. As you can imagine, that was the marquee product on display, but we also had the chance to handle the outfit's newest e-readers: the Glo ComfortLight, which has built-in backlighting, and the Mini, which is exactly what it sounds like. Daily iPhone App: Square Enix's Unreal game is called Demons' Score
Oh man, Square Enix's entries to the App Store just keep getting weirder. We heard a while back that the company would be working on an original game using Epic's Unreal engine for iOS, and here it is: It's called Demons' Score, and it's a rhythm-based shooter. No, really.
The idea of the game is that, like the great Elite Beat Agents (which, by the way, should probably get an iOS port sooner rather than later), you have to tap circles on the screen as they count down, in time to whatever track is playing. In the background, then, your character (in this case a scantily dressed female named Serenity with a teddy bear sidekick -- oh, Japan) fights demons with a firearm, in time to your tapping. Unity and Nintendo partner to bring Unity Engine, and its 1.2 million devs, to Wii U
Unity Engine is best known for supporting mobile and digital titles, but Unity Technologies CEO David Helgason sees his company's engine as more flexible than that. Nintendo apparently does as well, partnering with Unity on a worldwide licensing agreement that offers first- and third-party Pro level engine access to Wii U developers. The partnership also grandfathers in the existing 1.2 million Unity licensees to the Wii U platform, which Helgason tells us is, "extremely easy" to port to -- Unity's calling the partnership an "excellent opportunity"

UAV Lifeguards to patrol Australian beaches, Hasselhoff given notice
Look, up in the sky. It's a bird, it's a plane -- it's a lifeguard? Microsoft Office for Mac now has Retina support
Microsoft has updated the Office for Mac software to have Retina display support for Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint. The update is available via Microsoft AutoUpdate.

Office for Mac 2011 gets Retina display support
The most recent update for Office for Mac 2011 brings the software into full compatibility with the Retina display featured on some of Apple's newer notebooks. iOS 6: Minor visual changes come to the Music app
In iOS 5, the iPad's iPod app got both a name change to "Music" and a complete rethinking of the user interface. While some people may have found the new, visually-driven interface an improvement, I found it so cumbersome that it forced me to completely re-evaluate the media distribution across my devices. I wound up putting most of my music on my iPhone and only keeping the most essential of tracks on my iPad, because the navigation UI just isn't suited to a huge library like mine.

OS X 10.7.5 adds Gatekeeper, minor bugfixes
Complementing the release of OS X 10.8.2, Apple has also posted OS X 10.7.5, an update for Lion users. Don't you hate it when an app asks for permission to use photos or location data and you hit the wrong button? In iOS 6, you can bypass this headache and change permissions on an app-by-app basis.

iOS 6: FaceTime over cellular
With iOS 6, FaceTime gets a feature that it arguably should have had from day one: FaceTime now works over a cellular connection, not just Wi-Fi. That's assuming you have the right device, and assuming your carrier allows FaceTime over 3G/LTE without making you jump through hoops first. *cough*AT&T*cough*
Even though the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G model both have 3G and FaceTime capabilities, for some reason only the third-generation iPad, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5 have been blessed with FaceTime over 3G capabilities. There's been no word why the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 don't get this feature, and it's doubtful they'll get it later down the line.

Nokia Lumia 920 gets the FCC nod
It was going to happen eventually, but we're big fans of the "better soon than later" mentality. The global edition of Nokia's Windows Phone 8 flagship, the Lumia 920, has been given the thumbs-up from the FCC. The device, which supports five LTE bands used outside of the US and zero within, has already been WiFi-certified (the certification papers actually specify this model, the RM-821, as the Lumia 920.1, which leads us to assume the AT&T-friendly version might be the 920.2). OS X 10.8.2 adds promised Facebook integration
Apple has posted OS X 10.8.2, a major update for Mountain Lion. The main addition is Facebook integration, which was originally expected at the launch of the OS. The feature allows not only quick sharing of links and photos, but also the ability to receive Facebook alerts in the Notification Center. More hooks extend into Game Center, where people can "Like" games, and use Facebook as a source for friend recommendations. Scores can now be shared to Facebook, Twitter, Mail, or Messages; friends can be challenged to beat scores and achievements.

Apple releases OS X 10.8.2 with new Facebook, iMessage features
On the same day it released iOS 6, Apple also dropped the latest version of OS X Mountain Lion. Version 10.8.2 adds new Facebook features including single sign-on, the ability to share links and photos via Facebook and the addition of Facebook notifications in Mountain Lion's notification center.
Apple also improved iMessage and FaceTime so that iMessages and FaceTime calls sent to your phone number will be also land on your Mac. There's also a handful of bug fixes that affect Twitter, AirPlay Mirroring, Safari and more. If you're not an iPhone 4S owner, chances are that until today you haven't been talking to Siri, Apple's wonderful virtual assistant. With iOS 6, Siri debuts on the iPad 3, the iPhone 5, and the iPod touch 5th generation. A horde of new users are getting ready to jump on the Siri bandwagon this week.
You enable Siri from Settings > General > Siri on your device. The Siri pane lets you choose a language, link a primary contact ("My Info"), specify when you want the service to speak to you, and (for iPhone only) enable or disable the "Raise to Speak" option. Updating to iOS 6: Using over-the-air update
Most of our readers will already be familiar with iOS's over-the-air update system. You'll probably want to move onto the next post. For those of you new to iOS, here is a quick how-to.
Software update appears in your Settings app in Settings > General > Software Update. Here's what the iOS 5.1.1 update looked like. You tap on "Download and Install" to get started. You don't have to connect to iTunes. Everything happens on your device.

The iPhone 5 is getting very scarce before a single phone has been delivered, and it's likely to get worse before it gets better.
According to Electronista ship times for Apple's latest object of desire have now extended to 3-4 weeks in the US, Canada and Australia. Apple had been saying delays would be 2-3 weeks, but obviously supplies are dwindling.
The iPhone 5 sold out almost immediately for online pre-orders on Friday. That amounted to 2 million sales in 24 hours. Carriers are also quoting long delays. That means your best bet is to get in line at an Apple store or other retailer like Best Buy on Friday.

Time Warner willing to cede UI control to third parties
Time Warner Cable is "hard at work at a cloud-based [TV] guide experience,' but willing to allow third parties to create interfaces for it, says president and COO Rob Marcus. We just had a chance to see and handle the colorful Windows Phone 8X by HTC, but where will we find it in the US? On stage, the company told us that the new device will be heading to three major carriers: AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. US International Trade Commission to investigate Motorola claims against Apple
The US International Trade Commission announced on Tuesday that it will look into Motorola's claim that Apple is infringing on patents that cover messaging notifications, location-based reminders, media playback and more. According to a Computerworld report, the ITC will assign the case to an administrative law judge who will hear the evidence and make a preliminary ruling. Apple allegedly planning to ask for $3B from Samsung
Apple is planning to ask US Federal Judge Lucy Koh for $3 billion in damages from Samsung, even though a jury recommended $1.05 billion, according to "multiple legal sources" for The Korea Times. A hearing between the two corporations is set for September 21st. One of the sources -- who put forward the $3 billion figure -- comments that "the decision means Apple wants to quickly address the harm that Samsung's infringing products are said to be causing," and that "as has been the case throughout this trial, Apple is pressing its full advantage over the jurors' decision."

US Cellular will get Samsung Galaxy Note II in late October, will cost $300
We already knew that US Cellular would be getting its hands on the Galaxy Note II alongside the four national players in the US, but the company just came out with specific pricing and general availability. Evernote has released Skitch 2.0 with new design, cool new features and an app for the iPhone and iPod touch.
The desktop app's look has been pared down to the minimum and it looks a lot cleaner than previous versions. There are new functions, too, like pixelate. Plus, everything you create or modify in Skitch is now synced to your Evernote account.

iPhone 5 shipping times have extended to three to four weeks in the US, Canada, and Australia, checks of the online Apple Store show. More recently Apple was quoting two- to three-week delays. Americans reportedly spent $6B on broken iPhones
Warranty provider SquareTrade queried 2,000 iPhone owners and discovered that they have dumped an estimated US$5.9 billion into repairing their iPhones over the past five years. This price includes repair costs, insurance deductibles for phones with a warranty, and full-cost replacements for iPhones that are broken beyond repair.

Satechi's Swift BT Speaker provides some impressive functionality in a very affordable package
The Satechi Swift BT Speaker is a surprisingly affordable little speaker (at just $29.99) that performs quite well. It's small and fairly stylish, and though its functions are about what you'd expect from a Bluetooth speaker, the Swift accomplishes them with an understated flair that I really appreciated.
Setup is pretty standard for any Bluetooth device. You need to turn the speaker on, hold down a button for six seconds to put it into pairing mode, and then flip your iPhone's Bluetooth on and pair it up. Once that's done, the Swift works almost automatically. Whenever you're in signal, the speaker will connect up to the phone, and you can share audio signals across between the two devices.

Bisweilen wirkt es, als wären Apples PR-Texter inkognito als Praktikanten in Redaktionen und Blogs weltweit unterwegs. Die ersten Tests zum iPhone 5 schwirren durchs Netz und es fällt kaum ein böses Wort über das neue Apple-Smartphone. Oder liegt das einfach daran, dass es so verdammt gut ist?Seit der Präsentation des iPhone 5 konnten einige Medienvertreter bereits mit dem Gerät herumspielen, es testen und prüfen. Digital Publishing Suite SE now on Adobe's Creative Cloud
Adobe has announced that the Single Edition of its Digital Publishing Suite (DPS), a program that takes publication files created in InDesign and converts them into iPad applications, is now part of the company's Creative Cloud app initiative. The project lets users effectively download and "rent" the programs that make up Adobe's Creative Suite, but pay for them on a monthly or yearly basis. Adobe's DPS lets users create single-issue publication apps that can be sold through iOS App Store.

Looking for a superzoom camera without the bulk of a DSLR? Casio's Exilim EX-H50 is a pretty slick proposition. The camera's got a reasonably slim profile that's a bit more like an oversized point-and-shoot, slight bulk that's presently largely because of the extended soft grip and big three-inch TFT display on the rear -- and then, of course, there's that 25 mm wide-angle lens with 24x optical zoom that certainly adds a good deal to the camera's footprint when extended. In an unusual move, ArenaNet has made a beta release of Guild Wars 2, a massively-multiplayer online role-playing game, available to gamers with a select class of Mac machines, mostly very recent releases with beefy video cards. The beta comes just a few weeks after the release of the Windows version, using Transgaming's Cider technology to make the port possible. Just after their pre-TGS announcement, we were able to snag a closer look at the new slimmed-down PlayStation 3 consoles. While we weren't able to put our grubby mitts on the pair, we did get a peek at some of the exterior differences. According to reports, Apple's next giant data center will be constructed in Hong Kong, China. Apple has recently selected a location in the New Territories area of Hong Kong. Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2013, and it should take over a year for operations to commence at the new center. Full operation is planned by 2015. Apple is currently selecting bids from local and international construction companies for the buildout of the facility.

Just because Sony's focus during the Tokyo Game Show is on its two newest consoles, the Vita and the PlayStation 3, doesn't mean the company's forgotten about the PlayStation Portable. Career website holding company Dice Holdings has purchased the online media aspect of Geeknet, leaving retailer ThinkGeek out of the transaction. The $20 million transaction includes Geeknet properties Slashdot, SourceForge, and Freecode. For the past few years, the Game Developers Conference has held a satellite show in Austin, Texas called GDC Online (and I went there a few years back for TUAW to cover the mobile gaming track). But GDC has announced that this year is the last year it'll do GDC Online in Austin.
Starting next year, the conference (which has mostly been about online gaming) is moving to Los Angeles, and will be renamed the App Developers Conference. The App Developers Conference will be co-located with another show called GDC Next (which will apparently featur

Follow up: Sprint to sell iPhone 4 through web only
Previous reports suggesting that wireless carrier Sprint won't be carrying the iPhone 4 are partially correct -- the now free after contract phone won't be available at retail, and will only be purchasable online. A Sprint spokesperson told Cnet that the ""iPhone 4 will become a Web only device effective on September 21. We will certainly still be selling it." The original report showed that the older device would be "removed from Planogram on 9/21/12."

Daily iPhone App: Space Holiday asks you to connect the stars
Space Holiday is a recently released puzzle title that definitely tries something new, with varying degrees of success. It's sort of a line-drawing puzzle game: You play for a little space traveler who needs to open up portals by connecting stars on a 2D field, and the idea is that you connect up the stars with lines that don't cross, trying to create shapes that turn into the portals you need. The basic mechanic is that there are some angry asteroids trying to block your path, so you need to make sure to draw your lines around (or through, sometimes) the asteroids in exactly the right order.

Apple's Jony Ive to design limited-edition Leica M camera
Hot on the heels of its announcement of five new cameras in a wide range of price points at Photokina, German camera maker Leica has revealed that Apple Senior Vice President of Design Sir Jonathan Ive will create a special one-of-a-kind edition of the new Leica M camera which will be auctioned off for charity. The Leica M, a high-end DSLR that will retail for $7,000, is part of the company's "rangefinder" series and features a retro 1950s camera look. Only one copy of the Ive-designed version will be produced.

Inventory shortfalls suggest iMac refresh around the corner
Low iMac inventory numbers may suggest an upcoming refresh. If these screenshots from an Apple Authorized Service Provider who asked not to be identified are a true reflection of channel supply on current inventory, numbers are running low -- way low.
Our AASP friend writes, "While putting in an order today we stumbled upon both our suppliers have no stock of 21 or 27 inch iMacs. One picture has an estimated ETA while the other shows all current models at 0 stock. All 4 models look similar to the picture that displays the ETAs."

Advocacy groups notify AT&T of net neutrality complaint with the FCC over FaceTime restrictions
Public advocacy groups aren't all that impressed with AT&T's justifications for limiting FaceTime access over 3G and 4G to those who spring for its costlier Mobile Share plans. Guild Wars 2 Mac beta available now
Guild Wars 2 was released earlier this month -- it's a very popular sequel to a great (subscription-free) MMO game, and it offers up a lot of interesting innovations in regards to online massively multiplayer RPGs. When the game arrived, it was a PC-only title, but the developers have now announced that they will be supporting the game on Mac as well.
As ArenaNet says, the company is happy to "offer [Macs] as part of our employee laptop subsidy program, and our president Mike O'Brien is rarely seen without his Mac laptop. We're as excited as anyone to play Guild Wars 2 on OS X."
The Mac beta is available right now. Of course, you'll need to purchase the game
