Outwitters, Super Knights and more get nice updates
There are a few new solid updates out to popular games on the App Store, and you should head into the App Store app and grab them as soon as you get a chance. First up, Outwitters has gotten a big update to hit version 1.1. The biggest change is a new item in the in-app store that allows you to run more games at one time, but there are a number of bug fixes as well, for game crashes and game timeouts. If you are interested in checking out a very well-polished turn-based strategy title and missed this one a while back, now's the time to grab the free app.
Knights of the Round Cable has also gotten a big update, as well as a name change: It's now called

Pandora stock takes a beating on Apple music service rumor
Following a report that Apple was starting its own subscription music service, shares of Pandora Music, Inc have plummeted more than 16 percent, with most of the losses happening overnight following the wide distribution of the rumor. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has been in negotiations with record labels to license music for a service that would play songs based on listener's genre or artist selection.

Pantech ADR930LVW knocks on the FCC's door, brings Verizon LTE along for the ride
Are you familiar with the ADR930LVW from Pantech? Well, you'd be excused for never having heard of it, but given that it's just popped up at the FCC, you might be getting to know it soon. Typically, details are sparse, but a bit of sniffing around suggests that this will be rolling with Verizon friendly LTE (which might also explain the "VW" in the product name). South Korea called "courageous" for investigating Samsung's patent abuse
Samsung's "enormous political clout" in South Korea speaks well of the decision by the nation's Fair Trade Commission to investigate Apple's charges that Samsung is abusing patents it has already committed to fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory licensing terms, and instead using them to block Apple's products from the market, notes patent blogger Florian Mueller.

FedEx expecting heavy shipping volume September 21-24
Courier FedEx is bracing itself for a period of heavy shipping activity called a "surge volume," likely tied to Apple's impending new iPhone release. The period of September 21-24 has been identified by various sources, placing it nine days after Apple's iPhone announcement. FedEx had similar periods 10 days after the iPhone 4S announcement, and eight days after the iPhone 3GS presser.

Nvidia's Quadro K5000 GPU coming to a Mac Pro near you, and it's fast
Graphics card maker Nvidia has announced that its brand new Quadro K5000 GPU will be available inside of Apple's Mac Pro computers, and Engadget recently got a chance to see the new cards in action. The cards will offer 4 GB of graphics memory and some superfast performance, and will be able to support up to the new 4K video standard (which is what the television manufacturers are planning as a resolution after the current 1080p).

Apple going with NFC-less 'N42' version of iPhone 5
The iPhone 5 that will be showing up at Apple's September 12th event is an "N42" model first identified in May, sources tell 9to5Mac. The unit is said to have features like a 4-inch, 1136x640 display and upgraded processors and RAM. The N42 was reportedly picked over an N41 design, which had NFC technology; recent reports have claimed that the shipping iPhone 5 will indeed skip NFC.

iPhone revenue greater than all of Microsoft's
The next iPhone is expected to launch next week and CNN Money decided it was a good time to run a list of superlatives related to the financial impact of Apple's smartphone.
To start out with, Apple's iPhone business unit could be a Fortune 50 company on its own. That business unit is already bigger than all of Microsoft in terms of revenue. From June 2011 until June 2012, the iPhone generated $74.3 billion in revenue for Apple. By comparison, all of Microsoft's business units together generated $73 billion in revenue.

App Store acting wonky by showing free apps in the top paid list
Anyone else notice that the desktop version of iTunes is acting weird today? We were browsing through the top paid apps in several categories (Medical and Social Networking, for example) and noticed that all apps listed are free apps. Amusingly, the top paid app in the Books category is iBooks!
This is one of several reports that have trickled in this week with other unusual behavior in the iTunes App Store. Maybe Apple is tweaking things on the backside in preparation for some big announcement next week? We can only hope.

TUAW Origin Stories: Picky
Picky used to be Pod+, but since WWDC (when this was filmed), the developer has changed the name.
The idea behind Picky is simple: a tool for quickly filtering through artists and songs by viewing them based on how many songs of theirs are on your iOS device. When Pod+ became Picky, the dev who created it (Charles Joseph) gave it a substantial UI facelift. The result is a simple tool for picky music listeners.

Daily iPad App: Splice is a different puzzle game
Splice is an experimental puzzle game for iPad, put together by a developer called Cipher Prime. It was originally released on Steam and has received several awards. After being selected for PAX 10 and Indiecade 2012, Splice has made the jump over to iPad.
Splice is intriguing in that it's not easy to get into, as it's a puzzle game that plays hide-and-seek with its mechanics. But it definitely creates a striking mood, and it wordlessly communicates its principles quite well.

Blackmagic Design outs camera body with MFT lens support
Blackmagic Design has just added a version of its Cinema Camera that supports Micro Four Thirds lenses. The older camera will get an EF suffix to differentiate the two. The new camera will accept Passive Micro Four Thirds lenses with a manual iris and focus, though adapter rings will allow mounting other types of lenses as well.

Sept. 12th to see iPod touch, nano, shuffle updates
Beyond the iPhone 5, Apple's September 12th event will also see updates to the iPod touch, nano, and shuffle, according to 9to5Mac sources. NextGuide for iPad intends to get you to stop using the grid guide
Believe it or not, most people still start their TV watching routine by hitting the guide button and browsing. After that, they might check to see what's on the DVR, and eventually make their way through the streaming options available on their smart TV or game console. Verizon CMO confirms carrier will sell a BlackBerry 10 device at launch
This bit of news got a bit buried amid the back-to-back-to-back press events that happened earlier this week, but Verizon Chief Marketing Officer Tami Erwin confirmed in an interview with CNET on Wednesday that the carrier will be offering at least one BlackBerry 10 smartphone at launch. As you'll recall, that launch date now sits at sometime in the first quarter of 2013, following some delays, and it's expected than an all-touch device will debut prior to a more traditional keyboard-equipped BlackBerry. Audience Inc says Apple unlikely to use its audio tech in iPhones
Audience is a US-based company that makes voice and audio processors for mobile products. In the past, Apple used Audience's audio technology in the iPhone, but that may change with the next iPhone model, says a report in Reuters.

Apple-Samsung judge refuses to change sales ban hearing dates
US District Court Judge Lucy Koh denied Apple's request to move its December 6 injunction hearing to an earlier date, according to a Bloomberg report. Koh said there have been no new facts and no changes in the law, so she will adhere to the original schedule. She also said a later hearing would give Apple opportunity to broaden the list of Samsung products it wants to include in a permanent ban.

Airline support of iOS 6 Passbook reportedly ready for takeoff

Apple going with NFC-less 'N42' version of iPhone 5
The iPhone 5 that will be showing up at Apple's September 12th event is an "N42" model first identified in May, sources tell 9to5Mac. The unit is said to have features like a 4-inch, 1136x640 display and upgraded processors and RAM. Fox News: New iMacs are imminent
Fox News "Fox and Friends" host Clayton Morris is a huge Apple fanboy like us, and he's reporting today that "the iMacs are coming."
His take is that delayed in-store pickup of the 27-inch model -- which TUAW reported on last week -- as well as multiple sources telling him that a "new lineup of desktop machines from Apple is imminent" is enough to run a story saying that the company is going to "unveil (a) new lineup of desktop iMacs."

Apple is on the verge of updating the iMac lineup, several sources tell Fox News. The news agency doesn't elaborate on the claims, but does note that Amazon is out of 27-inch iMacs, while Apple is low on stock of them; 21-inch iMacs are still said to be widely available. Bereits Ende August tauchten Bilder von einem iPhone auf, welches einen besonderen Ship im Inneren platziert hat. South Korea investigating Apple's antitrust complaints of Samsung
Samsung and Apple are engaged in a bitter legal battle over patents both here in the US and overseas. Besides court cases like the high-profile one in the Northern District of California, Apple and Samsung are also taking their complaints to the FTC and other, smaller regulatory boards. According to a report in Reuters, the latest battleground is in South Korea, which is investigating whether Samsung broke antitrust rules when it accused rivals of infringing its 3G cellular patents.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Hands-On
Auch wenn der Kindle Paperwhite erst mal nicht in Deutschland landen wird, bzw. kein Veröffentlichungsdatum oder Preis bekannt sind, wollen wir euch das Hands-On nicht vorenthalten. Anders als beim beleuchteten Nook ist auf dem Paperwhite von Amazon die Beleuchtung nicht wirklich auszumachen als Lichtquelle von aussen. Der Kontrast ist im Vergleich z.B. zum Touch massiv besser. Viel schärfer wirken die Schriften trotz Licht und die neuen Schriften und Größen kommen auf dem Paperwhite voll zur Geltung. Amazon möchte zwar, dass man das Zusatzlicht generell an lässt, und die Batterie soll damit bis zu 8 Wochen durchhalten, aber das Licht ist so intensiv,

Sci-Fi-Strategie für das Smartphone: Avalon Wars eröffnet deutschen Server
iFree Studio veröffentlicht das MMO Avalon Wars für iOS- und Android-Geräte. Das kostenlose Sci-Fi-Strategiespiel ist bereits auf Englisch erschienen. Nun folgt die deutsche Version, für die auch eigens ein deutscher Server angelegt wurde.
Es handelt sich um ein klassisches Strategie- und Aufbauspiel, in dem man durch geschickte Verteilung von Ressourcen und das Ausbilden einer schlagkräftigen Armee insgesamt drei Planeten erforschen kann. Das Besondere an Avalon Wars ist das Helden-System. Jene Heroen werden wie es sich gehört in einer Bar angeheuert. Nicht weniger als 370 davon zählt das Spiel und es gilt, die stärksten Helden ausfindig zu machen und mit der besten Ausrüstung zu versorgen. Audience noise reduction chip reportedly cut from new iPhone
Audience, Inc, voice quality chip manufacturer for Apple's iPhone has said that its technology is unlikely to be used in the newest iPhone. The chips, which filter out background noise are supplied to Apple manufacturers, including Foxconn and Protek Ltd. Boarding pass support for Passbook discovered early
An Australian man running a developer preview of iOS 6 discovered when he checked in for a Virgin Australia flight using the airline's website on his iPhone that Passbook -- a forthcoming feature that is meant to "store" digital passes, tickets and membership cards -- had detected the checkin and offered to save the boarding pass. The discovery indicates the development on the new feature is already in an advanced state, with support from existing partners or the ability of the software to detect some types of check-in and act on them.

Report: Apple cutting Samsung DRAM, NAND orders
According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple has reduced its orders for memory chips for iPhone production from its main supplier Samsung Electronics. WSJ: Apple working on streaming music, custom 'stations'
A report in The Wall Street Journal claims that Apple is in talks with labels for a customizable radio service not unlike the service offered by Pandora and more recently by rivals such as iHeartRadio and Spotify among others. Judge Lucy Koh of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California has denied Apple's recent motion for leave to file a motion for reconsideration of Samsung's request to end the preliminary injunction on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Judge approves publisher settlements with DOJ over e-books
US District Judge Denise Cote, who is already on the record as believing that publishers conspired to fix e-book prices, has approved a settlement between three of the five major publishers and the US Department of Justice that could see e-book discounter Amazon restored to a monopoly position in the market, reports The Wall Street Journal. In the settlement, Hachette, Simon & Schuster and HarperCollins agreed to tear up their contracts with Apple and allow steep discounting of e-books for at least two years.

The pi Mount: it would be irrational not to love this iPhone accessory
In continuing the theme of tiny iPhone mounts from yesterday's review of the Universal Mini Stand from Tabu Design, today we'll look at the cleverly designed pi Mount (US$9.00).
The pi Mount gets its moniker from the shape of the design. When viewed from the front, the design looks like the mathematical symbol for pi. The legs of the symbol are perfectly sized to squeeze the Apple iPhone power adapter when it's plugged into a wall socket. Apple keeping Dock Connector Adapter manufacturing to itself
By now, it's widely accepted that any iPhone announced next week will come with a new, smaller connector port. iLounge is reporting that Apple is initially going to be the exclusive vendor of a Dock Connector Adapter -- a potential windfall for the company.

FCC expands internet speed monitoring to wireless broadband
Expanding a service already in place monitoring wired broadband promises and performance, the US Federal Communications Commission has announced a program to monitor performance of wireless Internet service using actual data collected by volunteers.
