Android 4.2 shows up in our server logs, shocks no one
Reports have been circulating that devices running Android 4.2, rumored to be code-named Key Lime Pie (though it's seeming more likely that it will retain the Jelly Bean moniker), have been popping up in server logs and benchmarks across the web. Well, after doing some digging through our own records, we're seeing quite a few instances of hardware running the unannounced Google platform visiting Engadget. Groupon debuts Breadcrumb iPad-based point-of-sale system
Groupon has announced its first point-of-sale system for retail, Breadcrumb. The technology is iPad-only, but designed to be easily connected to hardware such as cash drawers and receipt printers. TweetDeck gets cross-platform visual updates
Twitter has released simultaneous updates for the Mac, Windows, Chrome, and web versions of TweetDeck, its more advanced client software. The main change is the addition of a new theme which casts black text on a white background, instead of the standard white text on gray. A simple toggle control flips the theme back and forth at will.

Leap finally gets LTE, rollout starts next week
Leap customers, go ahead and jump for joy. The CDMA-based carrier is finally rolling out its first LTE market next week after about a year of testing it in Tucson, Arizona. (The first official market has yet to be named, however.) With its spectrum swaps finally complete, Leap hopes to spread LTE to around 21 million POPs by the end of this year and to around two-thirds of its current network by the end of 2015. Doodle Jump getting an Arcade version, plushies via licensing deal
Doodle Jump has been moving along at a much slower pace than Rovio's Angry Birds lately, but of course it's one of the other early success stories from the App Store. Developers Lima Sky have updated the game almost constantly since its launch (including just recently to make it compatible with the iPhone 5), and as a result, it's a hugely played and downloaded game. Lima Sky has now turned that success into a major licensing deal with a company called Innovation First International. Thanks to this new deal, you can expect to see all sorts of Doodle Jump merch available soon, from plushies and collectibles to robotic toys and other merchandise offerings on the brand.

Consumer Reports: 'Purple haze' issue not limited to iPhone
The "purple haze" problem with the iPhone 5's camera is actually prevalent along several major smartphones, according to Consumer Reports. The publication recently tested several devices, and found that the iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S III, and Motorola Droid Razr Maxx all displayed degrees of the issue. In some cases the haze took on a different color or a rainbow effect, but all displayed similar trouble when bright lights were in the frame.

Slingbox rolls out two new units that stream to Mac or iOS
You might have forgotten about the Slingbox service if you're not using it. The company hasn't updated its hardware in over four years. But that's not the case any more Today, Slingbox introduced two new boxes, the Slingbox 350 and the 500, which let you stream video from your TV to any number of connected devices, including your Mac, your iPhone, or your iPad.
Both devices stream in HD quality, and the 500 model also includes a Wi-Fi connection, an HDMI hookup, and a new service called SlingProjector, which allows content to go the other way, streaming from your devices onto the TV. The Slingbox 350 is available now for US$179.99, and the Slingbox 500 is listed at $299.99.

eBay unveils redesign, deals site and launches same-day delivery
After eBay finally straightened out its logo and became ebay (it'll always be camel-cased in our hearts) it seemed only logical that the site itself would get a long overdue facelift too. Groupon launches iPad-based restaurant point-of-sale system
Groupon is primarily known as a company that provides special deals to consumers via a free app, but they've now branched out into the restaurant point-of-sale (POS) system market with a new offering called Breadcrumb.
Breadcrumb runs only on the Apple iPad, and client establishments pay US$99 a month to run the service on one iPad or $199 a month for two iPad kiosks. Larger restaurants get a discount, with the cost for five iPads at $299 per month and up to 10 iPads at $399 per month. Clients can either buy their own iPads or purchase iPads through Groupon at cost.

HTC exits US tablet market, but will keep a watchful eye
Taiwanese smartphone and tablet maker HTC has revealed it will stop selling tablet devices in the US. The market is saturated and Apple's iPad is far and away the leading offering, according to HTC's global online communications manager, Jeff Gordon. MIT pencils in carbon nanotube gas sensor that's cheaper, less hazardous (video)
Carbon nanotube-based sensors are good at sniffing out all kinds of things, but applying the cylindrical molecules to a substrate has traditionally been a dangerous and unreliable process. EarPods ship without mic with new iPod touch
If you're one of the many people who has picked up a new fifth-generation iPod touch recently, you probably noticed one little change to the EarPods that came with it -- they don't have the same inline remote with microphone that comes with the iPhone 5.
The new iPod touch also has an A5 processor instead of the A6 found in the iPhone 5, and the specs of the camera aren't as good (a 5-megapixel sensor in contrast to the 8-megapixel camera in the iPhone 5), but then again, the device isn't an iPhone 5 -- it's an iPod touch.

Analyst claims 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro still on track
Production of a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display is still "on track", claims an analyst at NPD DisplaySearch. Speaking to CNET, Richard Shim believes the notebook will begin manufacture in the fourth quarter, later than estimates made by other analysts earlier this year for an October production start.

T-Mobile denies dropping iPhone from unlocking campaign
T-Mobile USA is denying claims that it plans to drop the iPhone from its "Unlimited and Unlocked" campaign, a spokesperson tells 9to5Mac. Yesterday TmoNews reported that T-Mobile had issued an internal memo warning workers to no longer refer to Apple or the iPhone as a part of Unlimited & Unlocked marketing. The document also allegedly mentioned that "BYOi [Bring Your Own iPhone] Program focus will change to BYOD [Bring Your Own Device]," although "iPhone Demo Devices should continue to be used for training and customer demonstration purposes."

Twitter buys yet-to-be-launched video-sharing app Vine
Twitter may soon allow its subscribers to link to and share short video clips, if the latest reports of it buying a yet-to-be launched video clip sharing service prove true. While the details of the deal aren't known, Vine promises to let its user base share short video clips, often just seconds in duration, with others. This certainly fits in with Twitter's short character limit as well.

Canada vaguely hints it'll block Huawei from government projects, citing security concerns

Apple 1 fails to sell at auction
Christie's auctioned off an original Apple 1 motherboard this week and the piece of Apple history failed to garner enough bids to reach its reserve price. According to an ABC News report, the Apple 1 had a top bid of £32,000 (US$51,155), which is well below the £50,000 ($80,000) reserve.

Office 2013 for iOS, Android due in March, says MS manager
iOS and Android versions of Office 2013 should be released in March, according to a Microsoft product manager. Petr Bobek made the comment at a press event in the Czech Republic earlier today. McDonald's lets customers use iPads
At a McDonald's restaurant in Virginia Beach, Virginia, customers are getting more than service with a smile. According to a report in The Virginian Pilot, they are also getting access to a free iPad that they can use to browse the web while they down their burger and fries.
The iPad-equipped franchise is located at Lynnhaven Parkway and operated by long-time McDonald's employee Hugh Fard. He told The Virginian Pilot that he decided to install the iPads after hearing about the idea from several French colleagues. German site MobileGeeks has leaked further details about the new Mini version of the Galaxy S III -- the device Samsung confirmed just this morning. Apple knew of iOS Maps app problems as far back as June this year, reports CNET. After the first beta of iOS 6 was seeded to developers, feedback on the error and inaccuracies on the new Maps app was supplied by numerous developers to Apple. Die Karten-App von iOS 6 zeigt Staus und Verkehrsstörungen auf den Straßen an. Die Funktion muss erst angeschalten werden was ein bisschen versteckt ist.
Bevor wir die Verkehrsinformationen einschalten können, müssen wir in die Einstellungen. Dort aktivieren wir den Zugriff des Verkehrsdienstes auf die Ortsdaten. Denn die Stauinformationen generiert Apple (teilweise) aus den Standortinformationen der iOS-Geräte und dafür ist die Nutzung der Lokalisation eben Voraussetzung. Die großen Hersteller von Navigationssystemen haben übrigens ähnliche Lösungen.

Ein neues Gerücht zum iPad mini: Angeblich soll es das kleinere iPad nur in einer WLAN- und keiner Variante mit einem Mobilfunkchip geben. Außerdem gibt es erneut eine Meldung zum verbesserten “großen” iPad: Dieses soll Apple mit einem neuen LTE-Chip ausstatten, der auch mit Netzen außerhalb der USA kompatibel ist.

EU testing Apple e-book settlement, due in next few months
The commissioner of the European Commission believes that a settlement could be reached in the Apple e-book antitrust case "in the coming couple of months." The European Commission is now market-testing an offer by Apple and four publishers in a bid to end the probe. The publishers involved mirror those from the US case over the same e-book price-fixing allegations -- Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Hachette Livra, and Macmillan are all named in the settlement offer. Publisher Penguin was also charged in the investigation, but is not participating in the settlement.

Survey: iPhone, iPad devices still tops with teenagers
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has again surveyed 7,700 US teenagers and has found that iPhone and iPad ownership among the teen demographic is growing rapidly, with iPhone owners nearly doubling over the last year. The survey had plenty of good news for Apple, as iOS devices remained heavily dominant in the buying plans for those who expected to acquire a new tablet or smartphone in the next six months. Late Tuesday, Apple updated its Apple Configurator mass-imaging and control program for Macs that manages remote iOS devices to version 1.2, adding support for iOS 6 features on supervised devices. Also new with this version a "Lock to App" feature, a global HTTP proxy, support for iOS 6 restrictions, and a way for managers to allow users access to features previously restricted, including access to the iBookstore for purchase of certain kinds of e-books, use of Game Center, iMessage and allowing users to remove apps from the device themselves if desired.

Several PC security firms have independently verified a weakness in Authentek's UPEK Protector Suite that allows hostile users with physical control of a machine to rapidly recover Windows account passwords. Apple I motherboard fails to sell at Christie's auction

Slingbox 350 and 500 review: Sling Media finally upgrades its line of media streamers
It's hard to believe that the Slingbox has been around for seven years, but that only makes it harder to accept these are the first retail models that have been released since 2008. That finally changes today, though: Sling Media just introduced two new place-shifters: the Slingbox 500 and 350 (pictured). Available on October 14th for $299 and $179, respectively, these new set-top boxes replace the Solo and Pro-HD. While the 350 simply adds 1080p streaming for the same price, the 500 adds SlingProjector, a feature that lets you take photos stored on your iOS or Android device and send them to your television (video streaming will soon be supported as well). The Slingbox 500 will also soon be able to play content on USB-attached storage, but that will come in a future software update.

USPTO extends Apple patent to cover opening apps, more
Apple's "slide to unlock" patent, which has been at or near the center of a number of patent battles, has been continued -- and perhaps powerfully extended -- in a new patent just awarded to the Cupertino computer maker. The new patent, in addition to re-validating the original patent, adds the ability for Apple's particular "slide to unlock" gesture to open directly into an application, an expanded meaning that could have serious legal implications in the ongoing litigation.

Lodsys in-app purchase patent validated by USPTO
The otherwise-stagnant Lodsys lawsuit has shown signs of life after six months of inactivity. Valpak coupons: When Passbook finally clicked for me
Like any new tech, Passbook took a few stumbles when it was born unto the world. I thought the only card I'd be using was the Starbucks pass, but I soon found frustration that it didn't work yet. Target's generic coupon offering wasn't very enticing, and Walgreen's Balance rewards card, while nice, wasn't exactly a compelling offering or a "gee whiz" moment. Delta has yet to integrate Passbook into its app. Then, after 3 years as a single dad trying to get into the coupon habit, I started using coupons again thanks to Passbook.

iOS Task Switcher concept explores feature's potential
The Verge forums user Sentry posted the concept art you see above for the (underutilized) iOS task switcher, and I think it's awesome. Sentry's vision adds a lot of worthwhile information to the multitask bar without sacrificing the clear layout.
The app thumbnails are great, but I really like the various controls for music, WiFi and Bluetooth. It's such a pain to have to dig down into the Settings app every time I need to switch one of those on my phone or iPad, and having them accessible with just a double-tap and a swipe would be excellent.
