Some iPhone 5 orders arriving with cosmetic damage
Apple iPhone 5 purchasers are taking to Twitter and other social media to complain that their newly purchased phones are cosmetically damaged straight out of the box. According to the complaints, a small amount of launch-day phones are being delivered straight from the factory with scuffs and other defects in the anodized coatings on the metal band surrounding the phone.

Apple demands $707 million more in damages from Samsung
In the latest maneuvers in the continuing legal battles between Apple and Samsung, the Cupertino computer manufacturer has asked for an extra $707 million dollars in addition to the billion-dollar verdict won in August. Additionally, Apple has asked for a permanent sales ban on products found to have violated its patents in the trial. Samsung continues to complain that the equal time restrictions imposed on both sides by Judge Lucy Koh prevented them from mounting an effective defense, and have filed for a retrial on that basis.

AmEx, Starbucks announce plans for Passbook integration: both live by end of the month

Facebook verzichtet auf Gesichtserkennung in Europa
Facebook ändert unter dem heftigen Druck von Datenschützern seine Praxis und stoppt die automatische Gesichtserkennung in Europa. Bis zum 15. Oktober werden alle bereits erstellten Profile gelöscht. Für alle neuen Nutzer sei die Funktion bereits nicht mehr aktiv. Das gab die irische Datenschutzbehörde in Dublin bekannt. Sie ist für die Kontrolle von Facebook in Europa verantwortlich, weil der Konzern seinen europäischen Hauptsitz in Irland hat. Apple seeks additional $535 million, permanent injunctions in patent case against Samsung
In a court filing late Friday night Apple has requested the court enhance the $1.05 billion in damages a jury awarded it from Samsung for their patent lawsuit in California. FOSS Patents' Florian Mueller has a breakdown of the figures revealing that Apple has chosen to seek enhancement just on the "willful" patent infringement to the tune of $135 million (less than the 3x amount it could have pursued) plus an additional $400 million for infringement of trade dress. Three new TV ads for iPhone 5, one for Earpods debut
Apple on Friday debuted a clutch of new television commercials, with a trio of new spots promoting the new iPhone 5 and one devoted to the new EarPods earbuds that now come with the iPhone and iPod Touch (and are available separately for $29). All four of the ads feature a narrator (Jeff Daniels) extolling the virtue of the highlighted features with a jaunty musical background in the style that has become a signature for Apple and was described by SVP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller in a recent court appearance as a "product as hero" approach.

YouTube brings interactive quizzes to videos with Questions Editor beta
Feel like something's missing from your YouTube viewing experience -- like some good 'ol multiple-choice questions? The chronic learners among us will be happy to hear that the site is testing an interactive -- and potentially educational -- feature that lets users add quizzes to their clips. A new page on the YouTube site describes a "Video Questions Editor Beta," which lets channel owners display multiple-choice questions on top of their videos as they play. PC Magazine: iPhone 5 is world's fastest smartphone
Benchmarks that rate RAM, processor speed, browser speed, JavaScript and graphics capabilities of various smartphone published by PC Magazine let the publication to declare the iPhone 5 "the fastest smartphone in the land" and able to substantially surpass rivals like Samsung's Galaxy S III and Motorola's Droid Razr M, the latter of which was just released last week (the S III came out in June). The iPhone 5 was more than twice as fast as any previous iPhone model, even when they were updated to iOS 6.

Paul Grant alias @chpwn, seines Zeichens Mitglied der Jailbreak-Gilde rund um das iPhone Dev Team, präsentiert auf Twitter das erste gejailbreakte iPhone 5.
Weniger als 24 Stunden hat es gedauert bis Cydia seinen Weg auf die sechste iPhone-Generation gefunden hat. Noch lässt sich aber nicht abschätzen wann der iOS6-Jailbreak für das iPhone 5 veröffentlicht wird, auch da sich Grant bislang mit weiteren Informationen zurückhält.

You knew that the hackers of the world would be anxious to jailbreak their fresh new iPhone 5's, and the feat's been accomplished just a day after older hardware running iOS 6 was similarly set free. Facebook meeting European privacy guidelines, avoids fines
Facebook has passed a review by the governing body that regulates the social network's privacy policy and failures ouside of North America. Ireland's Data Protection Commissioner ordered a privy overhaul for it's users outside the United States and Canada after an investigation found its privacy policies were too convoluted and lacked transparency to governing agencies and users.

Briefly: More iPhone 5 units stolen, self-repair teardown
An O2 cellular retailer store in London's Wimbledon area was hit in a robbery early Friday morning, with more than 250 iPhone 5 units stolen along with cash in what police say was an inside job. The BBC reports that 252 iPhones were taken from the shop in the Tandem Centre at 1:30AM local time, and want to speak with Usman Sethi, 23, who worked as an assistant at the shop. Sethi is also wanted for questioning regarding the theft of jewelry belonging to a member of his family. Lenovo ThinkPad 2 pegged for October 26th release, with a $799 price tag

Google Maps comes under legal fire again by Skyhook Wireless
Geolocation company Skyhook Wireless has filed suit in Delaware against Google's Maps service. The suit is the third against the search engine by Skyhook Wireless in as many years. The new suit alleges infringement of nine Wi-Fi geographical location patents by Android and Google Maps. Shoparoo promises a fun iPhone-alternative to box top school fundraising
If you're a parent like I am, you may be collecting box tops for your school. Box tops are great -- they help schools raise funds in a really effective way. For those who don't know, select merchandise in grocery stores contains a redemption value for school fundraising, usually a few pennies per item bought.
Due to the labor of dealing with these box tops, they can also be a big pain. Someone has to collect them, bundle them, count them and track them.
Now there's a new entry in the school fundraising arena. The free Shoparoo iOS app isn't intended to replace box tops. It offers another distinct avenue for parents to raise money for schools.

German court: Motorola, Samsung don't violate Apple touch event patent
Motorola and Samsung won a small victory in Mannheim Regional Court this week when a panel ruled that the two companies do not infringe on Apple's "touch event model patent," says Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents. Judge Andreas Voss oversaw the two separate lawsuits that happened to make their way through the German court at the same time.

Google will not kill Snapseed or other Nik software
A lot of photographers and artists were worried about what would happen to some of their favorite products after Nik Software was purchased by Google earlier this month.
Snapseed, HDR EFX Pro and Color EFX Pro, along with other Photoshop and Aperture plug-ins are extremely popular in the Mac universe.
