AMD Trinity review roundup: good bang for your entry-level buck
It's never easy playing second fiddle, but AMD is trying their best to keep Intel on their toes with its latest line of Trinity desktop chips. We were introduced to the Trinity last week, but now the official reviews are in from the usual specialist sites. The consensus seems to be that it provides solid performance for the price. iPhone 5, 4S are Apple's greenest phones yet
Apple says it makes the "the most environmentally responsible products in our industry," and an independent study has backed up this claim. iFixit and Healthystuff.org dissected 36 smartphones and analyzed their chemical composition using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The study graded the phones based on the presence of know hazardous chemicals like bromine, mercury and lead.

Adobe outs Lightroom 4.2, Camera Raw 7.2 final releases
Adobe has announced the availability of final releases for both Lightroom 4.2 and Camera Raw 7.2 today. The new updates bring functionality improvements and added raw file and tethered capture support for a range of new cameras. A number of new devices from Canon, Fujifilm, Leaf, Leica, Nikon, Panasonic, Pentax, Samsung, and Sony are now supported.

Huawei Ascend P1 LTE takes a tour through the FCC with AT&T-capable 4G and beyond
Huawei hinted last week that the Ascend P1 LTE would travel beyond British shores; it just didn't say where. Based on a new FCC filing, North America is sounding like a good (if very broad) destination. The regulator has cleared a version of the Android 4.0 hardware packing AT&T-friendly 700MHz LTE frequencies as well as AWS support that could suit it to Canadian LTE providers and future T-Mobile deployments

First Looks: The Joy Factory Airmax for iPhone 5
While the general shape of The Joy Factory's Airmax ($35) is pretty boring, the textured back gives this iPhone 5 case some unique character. A series of soft, clear raised diamonds float over a camouflage pattern and attach to a silicone rubber border. LG Optimus G coming to AT&T and Sprint in the near future
The LG Optimus G has already been confirmed to be heading to US shores, but we hadn't been given any details on specific carriers. AT&T and Sprint are the first to reveal their intent to carry the quad-core smartphone. still taking advantage of the 4.7-inch HD display, Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor, along with 2GB RAM, Android 4.0, a 2,100mAh battery and 32GB internal storage (with expandable memory available). Sadly, it looks like AT&T is going with an 8MP rear camera, while Sprint will opt for 13MP. As often is the case, pricing and availability weren't announced, so we'll keep you posted as soon as we have it. In the meantime, have a look at the press releases below the break.

Apple considering transition away from Intel CPUs for Mac?
Apple may be considering a long-term transition away from Intel chips for its Mac computers, according to a new report. Citing unnamed insiders, authors of a Bloomberg outlook for Apple's future under CEO Tim Cook suggest the company's leadership has "deliberated" over the move, which would help differentiate its computers from the competing Windows/Intel platform.

Weather Live, an iOS app that delivers weather forecasts with live weather scenes, has been updated for the iPhone 5. Apple asks retail workers to point out iOS 6 Maps mistakes
Managers at Apple Stores are asking their subordinates to help spot mistakes in iOS 6 Maps, according to Twitter posts by ifoAppleStore's Gary Allen. The initiative is said to be voluntary, but no other details have been mentioned. Over 40,000 people work at Apple Stores around the world, and Apple may be hoping to use this base to accelerate Maps fixes.

Tapbots finishes Tweetbot for Mac, Netbot for App.net
Tweetbot for Mac has finally been finished and submitted to the App Store, developer Tapbots has announced. The software has been in testing for several months, during which time Tapbots struggled with the limits of Twitter's API rules. Satechi's USB Surge Protector ($10) is designed for users who want to charge an iPhone or iPod without giving up an outlet. If you live in India and ask Siri to find you a restaurant, you may be disappointed. Siri isn't set up to provide local business searches in non-supported locales. Here's what normally happens in this case. Siri replies, "Sorry, I can't look for restaurants in India."

Apple retail employees encouraged to report Maps issues
With many thousands of staffers in the US alone, Apple's retail team has numbers on its side. It also has geographic diversity, with stores in 45 of the 50 states. Lots of people in lots of places who presumably carry lots of iOS devices -- just what you need if, perchance, you're looking to clean up some facepalm-worthy glitches in a shiny new mapping dataset.

Sources: Steve Jobs instigated move away from Google Maps
Former CEO Steve Jobs was responsible for Apple's push away from Google content in iOS Maps, according to "Apple insiders" quoted by Bloomberg. By the time of his death Jobs is said to have come to hate Google, which he accused of copying iPhone features while at the same time withholding turn-by-turn directions, a key feature of the Android version of Google Maps. Sometime before then he put iOS chief Scott Forstall in charge of the project, creating a secret workgroup on the third floor of Building 2 at Apple's Cupertino headquarters.

Sure, Nike+ will track your gait and help you tell your friends just how that couch-to-2K training is working for ya, but wouldn't it be nice if it your shoes were smarter? That's partly what Murata is enabling with its Walking Measurement System, on display at CEATEC 2012. It's a piezoelectric sensor that sits in the sole of your shoe and detects pressure at different points. App search engine Chomp shuts down, but is Apple cracking down on app discovery apps?
This should come as no surprise to anyone following the saga of Chomp, the app search engine Apple acquired some time ago. It has now ceased operations as an independent app.

During my sophomore year in college back in 1976, I had a roommate named Chuck who had problems waking up when his alarm went off. We tried a variety of alarm clocks and clock radios, all of which failed. Then we did an experiment with a timer plug and his stereo, setting the volume to 11 and placing the speakers next to his head. Google to reveal Street View for iOS web app tomorrow
On Thursday, Google will announce the addition of Street View to the iOS web app for Google Maps, says the Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg. The claim is included as a part of Mossberg's comparison of Apple's Maps app versus the one Google builds into Android. The New York Times launches HTML5 web app for iPad
The New York Times has launched an experimental HTML5 web app specifically for viewing content on the iPad.
The web app has a few different features from the regular iPad app, including the ability to find out which articles are trending on Twitter and a continuous wire feed. It supports swipe gestures and orientation for portrait or landscape viewing.

Why a 7.85" mini makes sense
The iPad mini rumors have been going on a good long time. Here at TUAW, we've long since moved past "will they or won't they." I want to address the "most likely iPad mini" scenario that many pundits have agreed upon. A 1024x768 pixel 7"-ish unit offers a budget, non-Retina scenario that allows minis to run existing iPad software without modification.
At 7", an iPad mini is workable, as it just (barely) allows the device to retain its base interactive integrity. As Rich Gaywood has long since pointed out, a 7.85" device offers a much better compromise than 7-inch model, but more about that in a bit.

Microsoft reportedly set to launch Xbox Music on October 26th, ad-supported option on tap
We've known that it was coming for some time now, and today we have a report of an actual launch date for Microsoft's Xbox Music service. According to The Verge's sources, the rollout will coincide with the launch of Windows 8 on October 26th. What's more, the site is also reporting that the service will include a free, ad-supported option in addition to a paid subscription -- rates for the latter leaked out last month. Apple working with MicroLatch on fingerprint recognition
Apple has signed a deal with an Australian company, MicroLatch, to work on fingerprint recognition technology, The Australian reports. The information comes by way of David Murray, formerly the head of the Commonwealth Bank and now a major MicroLatch investor. He claims that the help Apple wants is explicitly related to mobile payments using NFC (near-field communications). Samsung goes after credibility of jury foreman

A report from the Wall Street Journal suggests Asian suppliers have started mass production of components for the iPad Mini. Cited in the WSJ report are LG Display and AU Optronics, both of which are supposedly mass producing 7.85-inch displays for the rumored tablet device.

Judge Koh lifts Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales injunction
Judge Lucy Koh lifted the injunction that banned the sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the US, says a Reuters report. The court issued the injunction as part of a contentious legal battle between Apple and Samsung in the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California.

Apple's iOS 6 sees record adoption rate, topping 60 percent

EE confirms 4G rollout will begin October 30th, 10 cities at launch, 16 by the end of the year
EE has just confirmed that its 4G roll out will commence on October 30th in the UK. The announcement comes direct from CEO Olaf Swantee, and reveals both the official launch of the new EE brand in the UK, along with those much sought after 4G data services. Purported iPad Mini parts leak as WSJ reports production has started
Hey look, another round of purported iPad Mini parts have surfaced, this time courtesy of Ukrainian iPhone. Conveniently enough, the Wall Street Journal also happens to be reporting that its sources have confirmed "mass production" of the still unannounced slate has begun. This time around, we're looking at an anodized black version of the familiar backplate and its insides, notably hosing a SIM card tray and similar antenna spaces to the current iPhone crop. Alongside that is a separate digitizer in white, hinting that we may be end up seeing the final device in

Man konnte Regale anlegen und pro Regel alle Bücher hinzufügen, die in den realen Regalen standen. Der Clou: Es genügte, den Barcode vor die im Mac eingebaute Kamera zu halten. Is Nokia selling off its headquarters in Espoo, Finland?

Schulze and four equity firms examine Best Buy for takeover

iPhone 5: Lieferprobleme bei In-Cell-Touchscreens sollen behoben sein
Apple hat wieder einmal Probleme, genug iPhones herzustellen, um die Nachfrage zu bedienen. Beim iPhone 5 soll dafür auch eine Knappheit bei In-Cell-Touchscreens verantwortlich gewesen sein. Zumindest dieses Problem soll jetzt aber nicht mehr existieren.

Motorola versus Apple judge blog post criticizes patent law
Court of Appeals Judge Richard Posner who dismissed the Apple versus Motorola smartphone patent trial posted a blog entry complaining about the rampancy of patent filings. ComScore: iPhone gains market share, Samsung flat
Apple is gaining market share among US phone buyers; its arch-rival Samsung's share remains flat, even as the South Korean company leads all phone manufacturers. This according to the newest figures from comScore, which just released its August report on the US mobile subscriber market. The research firm's August figures found the iPhone maker gaining more share than any of the other top manufacturers, and doing so even before the release of its smash hit iPhone 5.

Batman: Arkham City Game of the Year Edition headed to Mac
Feral Interactive has a lot of expertise bringing PC games to the Mac, but they haven't quite figured out how to do it quickly yet. Batman: Arkham City was one of the biggest console hits of last year, but Feral Interactive is only now releasing it on the Mac. Sandia Labs builds massive 300,000 Android phone network

SuperSync 5 will add support for iTunes Match
SuperSync is a really impressive app that you've probably already heard about if you've ever tried to keep iTunes libraries between various computers synced together. It basically scans your iTunes library as you add to it, and then tracks different libraries across Macs and PCs to make sure that they're all the same (or at least that they all follow whatever rules you've set up for them).
And now, SuperSync is adding in support for iTunes Match. SuperSync will help iTunes find the best quality copies of those songs and sync them to any other computers you've set up on the system.

Batman: Arkham City GOTY Edition coming to Mac in November
A port of Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham City is set to come to the Mac in November, Feral Interactive has announced. BBC looks to build Playlister, stream own archive
The BBC is looking to leverage its own music archive holdings into a digital streaming service that would be known as Playlister. Valve opens applications store on Steam online service
Steam online store owner Valve Software has announced the availability of the first non-game software for purchase on the online venue. Audio gear maker Phiaton recently put out the PS 210 BTNC, a set of noise-cancelling Bluetooth 3.0 headphones; Electronista had an opportunity to put them through their paces. In practice they seem to strike a nice balance between cost and performance. They won't set the world on fire in terms of audio quality, either in clarity or bass response, but neither will anyone be disappointed.
