Operation Cyber Storm III underway, makes digital certificates cool again
Fans of cyberwarfare (which we are, if only because we like to imagine that it looks like Battlezone) take note: following hot on the heels previous Cyber Storm I and II and Cyber ShockWave wargames, the Department of Homeland Security is sponsoring a little something called Cyber Storm III. Starting yesterday, the three-day exercise simulates more than 1,500 different types of attack, with a special emphasis on identities, trust relationships, and digital certificates.

RIM: QNX to replace BlackBerry OS, run some BlackBerry apps
RIM during a breakfast at the BlackBerry DevCon session today said the QNX foundations at the heart of the BlackBerry PlayBook would eventually replace BlackBerry OS itself. Confirming a rumor, a vice president said the roots to the currently isolated BlackBerry Tablet OS would eventually spread to the smartphones. BlackBerry 7, which doesn't have a timeframe, would likely be a gateway ahead of the full switch.

Xmarks calls it quits
I've been a big fan of Xmarks for a while now -- I work on a few Macs and PCs regularly, and while MobileMe is nice, I've always appreciated Xmarks' ease of use (after a one-time setup, it basically worked automatically) and compatibility across whatever browsers I happened to use. That's why I was disappointed to hear yesterday that they're calling it quits. In around 90 days from now, the servers will shut down and Xmarks will be no more.

NFL FanVision review -- and behind the scenes
We've been wanting to try out Kangaroo TV's FanVision in-stadium video handheld ever since we first heard it was coming to 10 NFL teams (and the Wolverines) this year, and we finally got our chance last night during the Packers / Bears game here in Chicago. The system is actually super interesting, as it's the only large-scale DVB-T operation we've seen in the States; FanVision sets up a private network for each team and sports event they work with. At Soldier Field, that means there are two transmitters at either end of the field for people in the stadium, and another located in the scoreboard so the devices work while people are tailgating in the park

Archeologists brave flinging bits of rock with the iPad
You hear about interesting uses for the iPad all the time, and many times those uses are merely theoretical. Sure, using an iPad at an archeological dig sounds cool and practical and all, but does anybody really do it? As it turns out, the answer to that question is "yes."
in some of Apple's online promotional galleries, the company highlights a team of archeologists making use of the iPad for tasks such as text and graphical data entry. One of those in charge of the dig says using the iPad for this work has saved countless hours of data entry that would have otherwise been done back at the field office.

BlackBerry 6 shows up on Bold 9700, Pearl 3G -- and we check it out
To the untrained eye, you might think you're looking at a garden variety Bold 9700 here -- but you'd be wrong. So wrong! It's actually running BlackBerry 6, something that no device other than the touchscreen-equipped Torch has managed to do in public (in an official capacity, anyway) so far. Snippets show FaceTime, DVD references in Apple TV code
In addition to significant product references, the new Apple TV firmware also contains some more unusual bits of code, reports note. Among these are files apparently related to video conferencing, even though the set-top doesn't have a FaceTime camera. Several PLIST files meanwhile make references to DVD manufacturers, including Sony, Sharp and Sanyo. No version of the Apple TV has included an optical drive.

Jabra has unveiled the Go 660 in an attempt to stand out in the crowded Bluetooth headset field. The earpiece hinges on a new noise cancellation technique that Jabra claims is no-compromise. Office 2011 to ship October 26
That's right -- Office for Mac 2011 now has an on-sale date; it's October 26th, just about a month away. The suite will be the first Mac OS X version that offers Outlook rather than Entourage, and will come in a few different flavors. Home and Student 2011 will be available for $119 (or $149 for a three-copy family pack), and will come with Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Messenger. iControlPad to use Bluetooth instead of dock connector

Appeals court: music downloads aren't public performances
A Second Circuit Court of Appeals handed down mixed results for Internet music providers today in a ruling in New York. The appeals panel rejected claims by the royalty group ASCAP that downloads were live performances and said that transfers alone didn't amount to a public airing. Terms in the Copyright Act made it clear that a performance involved actual playback or a live show, none of which was guaranteed.

Bose VideoWave fits surround audio, iPhone/iPod dock into TV
Audio hardware maker Bose has just announced the VideoWave, an all-in-one surround sound audio and video entertainment system. It sports a 46-inch, 1080p LCD TV with some of the system's 16 speakers integrated into the TV enclosure itself. Surround sound processing comes from the company's Adaptiq software, while the speakers use deflection to bounce and disperse the sound through the room.

A thread was started today by a forum goer who spilled some water on their Mac and now they are having issues with the screen not staying on, any tips, advice and suggestions could be helpful. Konami's Road Fighters 3D hits Japan's arcades
We know it's tough to deal with the sorry state of arcades these days, but they're still thriving in Japan, and Konami has just announced one more reason to be jealous in the form of Road Fighters 3D. As you can see, that's actual 3D complete with 3D glasses, although the game can apparently also be played in 2D if you're not quite ready to experience "one of the most thrilling arcade racing experiences on the planet." Roku makes Hulu Plus official, touts edge over Apple
Roku today landed a minor coup and confirmed the addition of Hulu Plus streaming to its media hub. The deal gives owners access to the same $10 service and its expanded show reach, including both ongoing seasons and an expanded back catalog. First Look: Updated Apple Remote app on an iPad
As we reported earlier, Apple has updated the free Remote app for iPhone and iPad. It's about time. The new version looks fine on the iPad since it is not up-scaled. To pair the Remote software to your iTunes library, you must enter a 4-digit code into iTunes on your Mac. From there, you are on the way. You only need to pair once.
Control over WiFi is fast and responsive. The iPad makes a really nice remote for controlling media. Sonos will also soon offer an iPad remote for its whole house music system to join its popular

Hulu Plus coming to TiVo Premiere too
It looks like the Hulu overlords have finally seen the light, because Hulu Plus is coming to the living room in a big way -- in addition to the cheap'n'easy Roku players, the service will hit TiVo Premiere DVRs sometime "in the coming months." News: Apple sues Nokia in U.K. over patents
Apple has filed a lawsuit against Nokia in Britain claiming patent infringement, extending the ongoing dispute between the two companies beyond U.S. borders. Apple today sued Nokia in the UK today over most of the same patents that have covered its US countersuit. The claims cover nine of the 13 original claims covering the touchscreen technology of the iPhone and other computing technologies. Bose VideoWave fits surround sound into TV, custom UI aims to simplify set-top box clutter (video)
Keep it simple, stupid. That seems to be Bose's driving philosophy in its just-announced VideoWave entertainment system, and it's all about integration. There's no separate sound system to speak of: everything is built into the 46-inch 1080p LCD display. There are 16 speakers in all, including six woofers in a magnesium enclosure -- yeah, that's heavy; the total weight of this sucker is just under 100 pounds, according to PR. The surround sound is calibrated automatically via Bose's own Adaptiq, and its PhaseGuide sound radiator technology shoots high frequency audio waves to bounce off adjacent walls to recreate the effect of surround sound (i.e. a surround sound bar). iPhone 4 trumps Galaxy S in smartphone display showdown
Despite perceptions, the Retina Display on the iPhone 4 is overall better than that on the Samsung Galaxy S, DisplayMate discovered in a close look at smartphone screens. Apple's screen was undersaturated and too high contrast in photos, but its brightness, deep blacks, high contrast ratio and 960x640 resolution all made it the overall best display of five different models. The Galaxy S' Super AMOLED was better in blacks and contrast but, like many OLEDs, had oversaturated color and was noticeably dimmer.

Google Voice due in the App Store soon
TechCrunch has reported this morning that the Google Voice iOS app has been approved and should be in the App Store soon. They quote "sources" who claim that the app simply needs some tweaks for iOS 4 multitasking, and should be out within "the next few weeks." This is potentially huge news for Google Voice customers.
Getting to this point wasn't easy to say to the least. Here's a brief recap of the saga. First, Apple pulled all Google Voice related apps from the App Store in July of 2009, which prompted an FCC inquiry. Apple responded by saying, in so may words, "

Bluetooth Stylus für Galaxy Tab

Es gibt nun diese Bluetooth-tauglichen Stylus-Eingabegeräte für das Samsung Galaxy Tab. Wenn auch nicht wirklich offiziell, sind sie nun in der Vorbestellungsphase angekommen. Beim britischen Onlinehändler Play gibt es das Set für umgerechnet 59 Euro. DIe kapazitativen Stifte sollen Handschriften erkennen und via Bluetooth bis zu zwei Geräte verlinken können, weiterhin können damit Anrufe angenommen werden. Zwar konnte bislang das Displaykeyboard mit Swype schon gut überzeugen, aber als Zusatz scheinen die Stifte gar nicht schlecht. Sieht so aus, als müsste Samsung den offiziellen Stempel noch nachliefern.

Tim Cook denies rumors of heading to HP
Apple's chief operating officer, Tim Cook, has denied a rumor he is considering the CEO position at HP, according to Gleacher & Co. analyst Brian Marshall. Study paints iPad owners as young, male, susceptible to ads
A new Nielsen study has identified some of the demographics of iPad owners, and made some significant contrasts with other devices, Fortune notes. Of 400 surveyed iPad owners, a large majority -- 65 percent -- were found to be male. The imbalance was paralleled only in a group of Sony PSP owners, which slanted 62 percent towards males. Another e-book reader, the Amazon Kindle, only recorded a 52 percent male bias.

Apple Remote app v2 now available for iOS4
Apple has released an all-new version of their long-untouched Remote app for iOS devices, which has been well overdue an update for some time now. It has a number of significant new features, including Retina Display support, an all-new iPad UI, gesture-based remote control support for the new Apple TV, and (perhaps most significantly for some people) the ability to use use Home Streaming to stream content from an iTunes library on your local network to your iOS device. This last addition will be really useful for people with music libraries too large to fit on their device.

No surprises here, but Apple's just released version 2.0 of the Remote app for iPhone and iPad, which adds in support for the new iOS-based Apple TV in addition to iTunes on OS X. Dev-Team: Apple TV jailbreak exploit found
Members of the iPhone Dev Team have dropped hints on Twitter that it will be possible to jailbreak the new Apple TV. Team members pod2g and iphone_dev have both mentioned that the SHAtter exploit has been able to decrypt the Apple TV's firmware's keys. While Apple TVs are not yet in people's hands, the firmware is available from Apple's public distribution servers.

Android pushes iPhone to less than majority of ad share
Android has grown enough to break the iPhone out of its majority of mobile ad share, Millenial Media found in its latest study. Google's share of the US smartphone space saw it jump seven percent in August to reach 26 percent of ad traffic. iPhones still had a clear lead in share but were pushed back to under half at 48 percent with "flat" growth. The BlackBerry also grew slightly, but at 19 percent was now more clearly being outpaced by Android.

Official Google Voice for iPhone already greenlit, due soon?
Google may finally join others in bringing Google Voice back to the App Store based on tips early this morning. A contact near Google has reportedly indicated that the official Google Voice app for the iPhone has already been approved and that Google is simply holding off to finish iOS4 and iPhone 4 support. The source for TechCrunch claims it could be in the App Store within the "next few weeks."

Ehrlich gesagt sind wir schon lange keiner Tischtennisplatte mehr so nahe gekommen, dass sportliche Betätigung gedroht hätte, aber diese Tischtennistrainingsmaschine von Hammacher hat es uns trotzdem - oder gerade deshalb? - angetan: Analog zu Tennis-Ballmaschinen nimmt das Teil den Spieler unter Dauerfeuer, wobei zwischen drei Spin-Varianten (Underspin, Topspin, Heavy Topspin) gewählt werden kann. Levytator claims to be the world's first bendy escalator, has the patents to prove it (video)
You've seen conveyor belts before, most probably at your local airport ferrying beaten-up luggage in circles, but for some reason the same tech doesn't seem to have been applied to people yet. Leave it to City University London prof Jack Levy to correct that oversight with his eponymous Levytator -- an escalator that follows freeform curves (but not convention!) and offers a better "cost per usable step" than your typical moving stairs. AOC bringt "grünen" Monitor e2240Vwa mit Tribals auf dem hässlichen Gehäuse

AOC hat einen 22-Zöller vorgestellt (WLED-backlit, 1920 x 1080, 60Hz, Kontrastverhältnis 20.000.000:1, DVI-D), der dank "intelligenter Energiesparfunktionen" mit hohlklingenden Namen wie "eSaver" und "eSensor" fast schon in den Bioladen zu gehören scheint. Aber damit nicht genug hat AOC dem e2240Vwa auch noch sowas wie Tribal-Tattoos verpasst, als ob das zeitgeistig gewölbte Gehäuse in "Klavierlackoptik" nicht auch so schon hässliche genug wäre (Entschuldigt bitte unseren Furor, wir haben in letzter Zeit einfach zu lange damit zugebracht, Monitore ohne Design-Schwüngchen und Klavierlack zu finden). Jedes zweite in der Schweiz gestohlene Handy ist ein iPhone
Dass Apples iPhone in der Schweiz beliebt ist, zeigen nicht nur die Verkaufszahlen, sondern auch eine Statistik der Versicherungsgesellschaft AXA Winterthur (Danke, Thomas!). Rund jedes zweite als gestohlen gemeldete Handy ist ein iPhone, im ersten Halbjahr 2010 waren es 379. Zum Vergleich: Im gleichen Zeitraum wurden rund 100 Mobiltelefone von Nokia und je etwa 70 bis 80 von Sony Ericsson und Samsung als gestohlen gemeldet. Geräte von HTC, Blackberry und LG tauchen in der Statistik hingegen nur vereinzelt auf.

OCZ bringt Onyx 2 SSDs mit 120/240 GB, Preise fallen langsam aber vielversprechend

OCZ hat neue SSDs vorgestellt: Die Flash-Speicher Onyx 2 mit SandForce-Controller gibt es in 120 und 240 GB, gelesen wird mit bis zu 270 MB/s, geschrieben mit bis zu 265 MB/s. In den USA kosten die flotten Speicher 190 bzw. 449 Dollar, womit ein GB immer noch mit satten 1,58 Dollar zu Buche schlägt, aber langsam - gaaanz langsam - schweben die SSD-Preise in den vorstellbaren Bereich. Hierzulande haben wir die Onyx 2 noch nicht gesichtet, auf die Preise sind wir jedenfalls ordentöich gespannt.

The Shatter exploit that was discovered for iOS 4.1 devices has, predictably enough, been found to function on the latest Apple TV as well. Though a jailbreak fit for distribution is still brewing for all of Apple's iOS wares, this will be welcome news to folks interested in trying to add a little extra functionality to Apple's hockey puck of a media streamer. Then again, even the best of apps might not make up for it being a 720p media device in a 1080p world.

In New York nimmt das Bike-Sharing-System, von dem hier schon mal im August die Rede war, langsam Gestalt an: Jetzt gibt es das vernetzte GPS-Fahrradschloss immerhin schon mal als Prototyp, als nächstes kommt der Praxistest. Social Bicycles (SoBi) basiert auf einer Handy-App, die derzeit abgeschlossene und damit freie Fahrräder in der Nähe anzeigt, was natürlich ein halbwegs schlaues Schließsystem mit GPS voraussetzt.

Mit dem durch das Dev-Team bereitgestellten Schlüssel ausgestattet, durchstöberte MacTalk-Forumsmitglied matthew858 die speziell für die zweite Apple TV-Generation gedachten Version von iOS 4.1, die Apple über Nacht auf den eigenen Servern zu Restore-Zwecken bereitstellte. Laut TechCrunch bereitet Amazon einen eigenen Android App Store vor. So seltsam das erstmal klingen mag, rein Traffic-technisch scheint es uns eine gute Idee zu sein. Weniger klar ist die Aufteilung des Gewinns: "mehr als 70 Prozent des Kaufpreises oder 20 Prozent des Listenpreises zum Verkaufsdatum", was auch immer das heissen soll, wahrscheinlich geht es bei der Formulierung darum, dass man nicht bei anderen Anbietern billiger anbietet. Pixel Qi has today announced it's taking the next step in its quest for global domination of sunlight-readable displays. Partnering up with German outfit Display Solutions AG, the company is about to start selling its 10-inch, 1024 x 600 panels as standalone units, which you'll be able to hook up to your computer or smartphone via USB, either the wired or Wireless version. Power consumption maxes out a measly 1.5W with the LED backlight turned on, meaning that one USB tether will be sufficient to feed it both power and data. Kurz nach der Vorstellung des Apple TV wurde noch spekuliert, welches Betriebssystem die neue Generation des Apple TV einsetzt. Just slightly ahead of the new Apple TV's arrival at purchasers' doorsteps, Apple has posted the restore firmware for the new device (download link). The firmware's filename and .ipsw extension both confirm what practically everyone already knew: the new Apple TV runs on a flavor of iOS, the same operating system running on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. Amazon launching its own Android app store?
This sounds like madness to us, but take it for what you will: TechCrunch is reporting via some tipsters that Amazon is preparing to launch its own Android app store, of all things. Revenue split is rumored to be "the greater of 70 percent of the purchase price or 20 percent of the List Price as of the purchase date," which is pretty strange wording -- this "List Price" concept is apparently designed to prevent you from undercutting pricing with other services -- and there'll be a $99 fee to gain entry, which is pretty standard. TUAW Review: Tagalicious for iTunes metadata, artwork, and lyrics
Tagalicious is a $20 Mac application from the The Little App Factory (best known for their excellent DVD ripper RipIt) which will clean up your iTunes library metadata, fetch artwork, and even find lyrics. So far it's been extremely impressing both in accuracy and price.
I had a "Guns N' Roses" song "1-01 Sweet Child O' Mine.mp3" with existing metadata saying it was the song "Sweet Child O' Mine" from their Greatest Hits album. Tagalicious said it was "Welcome to the Jungle." I played the file in iTunes. Sure enough, my metadata was wrong. It was "Welcome to the Jungle." I have no idea how Tagalicious figured that out, but I suspect it is guilty of practicing

Okay, we've got a long way to go before we can do a fair, apples-to-berries comparison between these two titans of industry, but consider this your first sneak preview of the deathmatch to come. As we mentioned in the previous post, the PlayBook is hopelessly locked away in insanely thick Plexiglas -- and the iPad is unactivated, though that doesn't much matter for getting a sense of the size comparison between 'em. Cabinet members in Saskatchewan getting iPads to reduce paper use
The Canadian Broadcasting Company is reporting that 18 Canadian cabinet ministers and five senior staff members in the province of Saskatchewan are receiving iPads in an attempt to get a handle on the costly consumption of paper. With the cost of the 64GB 3G iPad running about CDN$879 plus fees and taxes, the initial cost of the iPads will run about CDN$23,000. However, the government expects that double that amount will be saved in the first year alone, since paper and printing costs will be cut drastically, and fewer courier runs will be required to deliver physical documents.

BlackBerry PlayBook first eyes-on!
So RIM's got these PlayBooks locked in thick Plexiglas that seems specifically designed to prevent you from seeing the side, though we don't know why they'd want to do that considering it's a sexy 9.7mm thin. Anyhow, the screen seems pretty great -- we're not sure if it's IPS, but it's definitely high-res and should function really well for video and gaming. All told, it looks like it'll be about as easy to lug around as the Galaxy Tab, which makes sense considering we're looking at the same size display and roughly the same form factor. Hitachi makes 30 percent thinner touchscreen LCD
Japan's Hitachi Displays is developing an touchscreen LCD for mobile devices that is just 1.5mm thick, or about 30 percent thinner that today's displays. The touch panel layer was reduced from the 0.5mm thickness in traditional displays to just 0.1mm by eliminating the glass substrate and other materials from the design. The additional inherent noise emission that is a result of this will be handled by Hitachi's touch control software, the company said.

A new Gadget Census study, released by Retrevo, has looked into substantive differences between habits of iPhone, Android and Blackberry users on both their handsets and other high-tech devices. Android users were deemed the most "cutting edge," with iPhone users positioned as young, satisfied consumers and Blackberry owners as older and tending to hang on to older technology for longer periods of time. Patent illustrations hint at double-dock iPad, touch-based corner button
Patently Apple has a few new patent illustrations from China that may hint at future iPad hardware features. The first is a second dock on the side of the tablet. As you can see above, the connector would come in handy if you wanted to view the iPad in landscape form, but didn't want to have a cable sticking out of the side. Personally, I can't really see Apple duplicating functionality in this way, though -- while a second port would be handy, it seems a waste to have a completely separate port used only half the time. Like most patents, this is only an idea at this point -- Apple isn't required to actually use it in a future release.
