YouTube options, iPad multitasking animation, Game Center flagging coming in iOS 4.2
9to5Mac has been digging through the brand new iOS 4.2 beta, and they've found a few new features hidden in the mix. First up, the build offers some new YouTube uploading options -- you can now choose to make your uploaded YouTube videos public, unlisted, or private right on upload. RIM on BlackBerry app count: "we don't need 200 fart apps"
RIM VP of product platform management Alan Panezic defended BlackBerry App World's low 10,000 app count at DevCon by striking back at Apple and Google. He rejected the notion that hitting 50,000 or otherwise increasing sheer quantity was important and reiterated the notion that RIM valued "super apps," or heavily used apps that will both improve the phone and be helpful to developers. Android and iPhone app counts were considered deceptive since they include a large amount of redundant and low value apps.

T-Mobile G2 now shipping to some pre-orderers
You can't grab one of these bad boys from your local store just yet -- you'll have to wait until early October for that -- but some current T-Mobile customers who'd pre-ordered the G2 (including our own Myriam Joire) are reporting that their devices have shipped. That means we'll probably see at least a few of these showing up in excited forum threads tomorrow, and a whole phalanx of 'em by week's end. Get those QWERTY thumbs oiled and warmed up, folks.

OCZ outs High-Speed Data Link SSD interface
Computer storage maker OCZ on Wednesday said it has developed a High-Speed Data Link (HSDL) interface to help speed up the transfer speeds of SSD drives. With the bus technology, OCZ hopes to eliminate I/O bottlenecks and enhance high-performance computing for its pro users.

Spanish paper identifies second Barcelona store location
A Spanish newspaper, La Vanguardia, says it has confirmed the location of a second Apple Store to be built in Barcelona. A lease has reportedly been signed for a 27,000 square-foot space at 1 Paseo de Gràcia, located within the city's center. The building was founded in the late 1800s, and features apartments on its upper levels. One corner is noted to face Catalunya Square, making the structure extremely visible.

Chromium OS hacked to run on iPad
Hexxeh, which builds Flow Chromium OS-based software for Windows, Linux and Mac computers, has posted an image of what it says is Chromium OS running on Apple's iPad. No details on how this was done were revealed, but they are promised to be forthcoming. The creator of the hack did say it involves a few catches, however, which likely means compromises in functionality.

Apple TV teardown shows 256MB RAM, 8GB storage
DIY repair shop iFixit this afternoon finished a teardown of the new Apple TV. The close look reveals that the hub has the same variant of the A4 processor as the iPod touch and has 256MB of RAM, rather than the 512MB of the iPhone 4. Apple has also put just a single 8GB Samsung flash chip to both hold the OS and cache movies during the streaming process.

Nintendo announces Wii Remote Plus with built-in MotionPlus tracking
No details to speak of right now, Nintendo says it will be fleshing out this announcement at "some later date." What we do have is confirmation from Nintendo that they are indeed building the Wii Remote Plus, which combines a Wii Remote with its Wii MotionPlus gyro add-on into one Wii Remote-sized package. We spotted the controller in a FlingSmash bundle last week, the telltale "smile" text below the Wii logo, and now all we really need is a price and a launch date. iFixit: Apple TV has 8GB of onboard flash RAM
One of the big questions concerning whether or not the new Apple TV will be able to run apps of some sort is "how much onboard RAM does it have?"
That question has been answered by the guys at iFixit, who as usual have been the first to tear apart and document the internal workings of the Apple TV. The answer? 8 GB of NAND flash RAM made by Samsung. The iFixit team speculates that the RAM is most likely going to be used to cache incoming video streams, but it might also be used to temporarily hold apps that could run under iOS on the device.

Sonos delivers free iPad remote for its wireless music systems
It must be 'iPad Remote Week' because hot on the heels of Apple releasing iTunes remote control for the iPad, Sonos has delivered a very nice, free iPad remote that is feature complete, and elegant in execution.
Previously, Sonos owners had to make do with the iPhone version of the app, which only ran in portrait mode and had to upscale to fill the iPad screen. Apple TV teardown reveals 8GB flash storage, 256MB RAM, leftover iPad parts
"Of course the new Apple TV gets a teardown, silly," is what we would tell you should you have the audacity to question its inevitability. But alas, we're too busy analyzing every photo of iFixit's gallery to even dignify your raised eyebrow with an unprovoked response. Amazon App Store terms would let Amazon force DRM
Amazon's upcoming Android App Store will have terms that will let it alter apps against developers' wishes to add copy protection, a leak of the terms and conditions has shown. The tentative developer agreement for the store would give Amazon full rights to change an app to use "technologies enabling digital rights management." Developers could choose to make apps copyable but would have no choice but to use Amazon's choice of DRM, SlashGear's source discovered.

China Unicom iPhone 4 sales break 100,000
China Unicom has managed to sell over 100,000 iPhone 4s since last Saturday's launch, according to the carrier's vice president, Li Gang. While fast, the sales still mean a backlog, as some 200,000 people had pre-ordered the phone as of last week. Gang says he only expects the next shipment of iPhone 4s to arrive on October 1st, China's national holiday.

Apple TV deliveries begin -- we have unboxing photos and video
Several TUAW readers have let us know that their Apple TVs have arrived, and reader Clint even sent us a link to his MobileMe gallery of his official unboxing of the new device.
As you can see from the photos, the thing is tiny. The Apple TV comes packaged with a power cord, a remote, a small user manual, and of course the ubiquitous Apple stickers. There's no HDMI cable included, so if you don't have one available, be sure to run to your nearest electronics store to pick one up so you can start playing with the Apple TV as soon as possible.

Queuing and downloading in the App Store
Here's a great idea from Ryan Cash to put iOS apps unavailable for immediate download into a queue that will automatically resume when they can.
Ryan notes that he often buys iOS apps when he's out-and-about, whether it be on the recommendation of a friend, riding in a car, etc. The problem is many of the target apps are over the 20MB 3G limit. I've experienced this myself, as well as the inevitable conclusion: I forget to try again once I'm within a Wi-Fi network and the app's author has lost that sale.
Ryan suggests an "add to queue" option to accompany or follow the notification at right, which would put that download into a holding pattern until the iPhone found a Wi-Fi network. That way, the download would resume, we'd get that cool app we

Wireless USB 1.1 brings near-field pairing, more
The USB IF promised an easier time with wireless support today by posting and detailing the Wireless USB 1.1 standard. It now supports near-field communication (NFC) and proximity detection as a way of setting up peripherals. Denon outs N7 stereo with iOS AirPlay
Electronics maker Denon has introduced the RCD-N7, a new small home entertainment center that integrates a CD player and iPod dock. It supports the popular digital audio formats and will support Windows Media Player 11 for syncing through integrated Wi-Fi. Sprint Epic 4G update coming tomorrow, should fix 3G upload issues
So, you aren't crazy after all. Feels good, right? After nearly a month of bickering from Epic 4G owners, a Sprint forum administrator has finally come forward with glowing news about this so-called 3G upload issue: a fix is coming, and soon. If you missed out on the story, users were finding that their 3G uploads were being capped at around 150kbps, and a ginormous thread over at the carrier's message board has grown as the problem has persisted. Apple to create new HTML5 content for website
Apple has published new job posting for a Creative Technology Manager, tasked in part with creating new HTML5 content at Apple.com, with support for iOS devices.
The listing seeks an individual who "will be responsible for driving web-standard (HTML5) innovation that enhances and redefines the marketing of Apple's products and services to millions of consumers. Work will also include exploring opportunities with apple.com, email and mobile/multi-touch experiences on the iPhone and iPad."

Steve Ballmer: Kin 'defocused activity from Windows Phone'

Analyst: Amazon to sell 5 million Kindles, fend off iPad
Barclays Capital analyst Douglas Anmuth today estimated that Amazon would sell about five million Kindle readers this year. Latest iOS 4.2 beta shows lower memory use
The second beta of iOS 4.2 makes some significant improvements to memory usage, testing is said to show. In general the code is observed to use almost a quarter less memory than beta 1, even under the weight of Safari and YouTube. A slightly smaller margin exists when the two betas are idling.

AT&T welcoming BlackBerry Curve 3G and Pearl 3G to the fold later this year

Finnish broadband provider Elisa to sell unlocked iPhone 4 starting tomorrow
People who are anxious to get an iPhone 4 without a carrier lock-in in the land of Nokia will now have an opportunity to get an unlocked device.
Finnish broadcaster YLE is reporting that broadband provider Elisa will start selling unlocked iPhone 4s on Thursday, September 30th. The iPhone 4 is currently being sold in Finland with a contract by mobile carrier TeliaSonera.
The pricing for the unlocked phones is €589 for the 16GB model and €689 for the 32GB version. And in case you're wondering what those words below the iPhone 4 banner in the picture above mean? "Coming soon."

Tim Cook rumors affect Apple, HP stock
Late yesterday morning, a rumor hit the the Internet suggesting that Apple's COO Tim Cook was going to leave the company to become HP's CEO. As a result, Apple's stock took a dip while HP's showed a sudden spike.
In morning trading, Apple's stock fell nearly US$17 (or 5%), while HP's rose by more than $0.40 (over 1%). Clearly, investors like Tim Cook, and saw his rumored departure as detrimental to Apple and a win for HP. Fortunately for Cupertino, it's not true.

SMAVNET: Notnetzwerk aus fliegendem Botschwarm (mit Video)

AK Zensur kristisiert Unwirksamkeit dänischer Netzsperren
Der Arbeitskreis gegen Internetsperren und Zensur (AK Zensur) hat eine in Zusammenarbeit mit anderen europäischen Bürgerrechtsorganisationen erarbeitete Analyse aktuell in Dänemark gesperrter Websites vorgestellt. Demnach enthalten von 167 zwischen 25. und 28. September 2010 überprüften Einträgen lediglich drei tatsächlich Inhalte, die als Kinderpornografie eingestuft werden können. Zwei davon waren schon 2008 auf der dänischen Sperrliste verzeichnet und stehen beziehungsweise standen in Norwegen, Finnland und Schweden darauf, wurden aber bisher nicht entfernt.

Apple wins patents on antenna tech, iMac and Touch designs
Apple has been newly granted some 17 different patents, two of which would allow for a 3G-enabled MacBook, according to Patently Apple. Antennas for wireless electronic devices documents taking advantage of conductive housing in a notebook to produce antennas using dielectric members. In one part of the filing, Apple remarks that "cellular telephone communications could be handled using a multiband cellular telephone antenna and local area network data communications could be handled using a multiband wireless local area network antenna."

HDCP exploit released, decrypts 1080p in real-time
The HDCP exploit Intel tried to downplay a couple of weeks ago is now being offered to the public. Created by Rob Johnson and Mikhail Rubnich, the open-source software is said to be capable of decrypting 1080p HDCP video in real-time. This does requires a moderately powerful system, however, with the creators saying a high-end, multi-core 64-bit CPU can decrypt 30FPS, 1080p content using two cores and about 1.6GB of RAM.

This one, which comes in both 15.6 and 17-inch sizes, boasts an integrated Intel 6250 WiMAX card and an updated chassis design. Time Warner exec joins chorus against 99-cent TV rentals
Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes has joined others in the TV industry in criticizing 99-cent TV show rentals and purchases from Apple and Amazon. The executive recently spoke at the Royal Television Conference in London. "How can you justify renting your first-run TV shows individually for 99 cents an episode," he said, "and thereby jeopardize the sale of the same shows as a series to branded networks that pay hundreds of millions of dollars and make those shows available to loyal viewers for free?"

China Unicom sells 100,000 iPhone 4s in four days
After 4 days of availability, China Unicom (CU) has sold 100,000 iPhone 4s in China (here are some photos from launch day). Pre-orders began on September 16th, and CU reported earlier this week that 200,000 orders were taken. Today, all online reservations have come to a halt. Customers must be physically at a retail store to buy one. For now, the iPhone 4 is outselling the iPhone 3GS many times over.
Phones bought through China Unicom require a two year service contract; however, the phone is also available contract-free at Apple stores.

Wecker Aphelion zwingt Schlafmützen auf Murmelsuche
Der Designer Corey Harris hat sich ein Wecker-Konzept ausgedacht, das notorische Schlafmützen mittels einer Kugel auf Trab bringen soll: Zur Weckzeit wird diese aus dem Gehäuse gekickt und rollert dann irgendwo im Schlafzimmer herum. Panasonic announces 10-inch Let's Note J9 laptop in Japan
Panasonic Japan has announced a new compact laptop, the Let's Note J9 series. Specwise, this one's got a 1366 × 768 resolution, 10.1-inch LCD, a 2.53 GHz Core i5 CPU, up to 6GB of DDR3 RAM (with 2GB coming standard), and a 128GB or 160 GB SSD. Other than that, the J9 boasts three USB ports, and HDMI out. A 3G model with an Intel Core i7 CPU, and a 256GB SSD will also be available for purchase online in Japan. CLEAR WiMAX router passes the FCC without a scratch
The world is not suffering from a dearth of WiMAX routers, but CLEAR has just a bit of room in their stable: while they offer 4G modems that plug into your computer over USB or Ethernet, along with battery-powered WiFi hotspots, they don't offer any home routers that do the WiFi thing, router thing, and WiMAX thing all-in-one. If this sounds like soft spot in their lineup to you, you'll be happy to know that an honest to goodness plug-it-into-a-wall 802.11n router with WiMAX, CLEAR branding, and possibly even a VoIP plug has just passed through the FCC. It's one of several iOS text editors that feature support for Dropbox, so we thought a quick roundup of these apps was in order. If you're thinking about joining me for NaNoWriMo 2010 starting on November 1st, it's a good idea to think about what device(s) you'll be writing on and getting your writing software ready to roll as soon as you can. Text editors make excellent writing tools, since they're bare bones and don't get in the way of putting words onto "paper."

Nintendo 3DS pushed past holidays, will cost $299 in Japan

When we reviewed the $150 Kobo e-reader this summer we liked the value it offered, but didn't particularly appreciate the poor performance nor the missing wireless connectivity. HP rechnet für 2011 mit bis zu 23 Prozent Gewinnsteigerung
Hewlett-Packard hat gegenüber Analysten eine erste Prognose für das Geschäftsjahr 2011 abgegeben, das im November 2010 beginnt. Demnach rechnet der Computerhersteller mit Einnahmen zwischen 131,5 und 133,5 Milliarden Dollar (98 Milliarden Euro) und einem GAAP-Gewinn von 4,35 bis 4,45 Dollar je Aktie. Gegenüber den für das laufende Fiskaljahr erwarteten Zahlen würde dies ein Umsatzplus von 5 bis 7 Prozent und einen Gewinnanstieg zwischen 20 und 23 Prozent bedeuten.

Das iPad mit einem neuen OS? Nö, das hier scheint ein Port vom Chromium OS für das iPad zu sein, was ja nicht weniger sensationell ist. Sagt jedenfalls Hexxeh, der sich ansonsten um die Nightly Builds von Googles OS kümmert, als Beweis hat er auch gleich von seinem "befreiten" iPad getweetet. Allerdings dämpfte er die Euphorie (nicht ohne sie vorher noch ordentlich hochzuschaukeln) ein wenig mit der Bemerkung, dass es durchaus ein paar Haken und Ösen gibt, aber bis er die weiter ausbreitet, können wir uns unseren Fantasien von einem iPad mit alternativem Betriebssystem hingeben.

Wie aus dem Xmarks-Blog zu entnehmen ist, wird der Betrieb des beliebten kostenlosen Bookmarc-Sync-Dienstes «Xmarks» per Ende Jahr eingestellt. Begründet wird die Schliessung mit fehlenden finanziellen Mitteln.
Xmarks (früher: «Foxmarks») stellte seit Anfangs 2006 eine Plattform zur Verfügung, um zwischen mehreren Computern und Browsern Lesezeichen, Passwörter und zuletzt auch geöffnete Tabs zu Synchronisieren. Davon profitierten gemäss eigenen Angaben über 2 Millionen User verteilt über 5 Millionen Geräte. Sony A55/A33 video recording limited by overheating sensor
So this is why the promo video accompanying Sony's launch of the A55 and A33 was set against a snowy backdrop. It turns out that these oh-so-revolutionary translucent mirror shooters can't keep their cool for any longer than 11 minutes when recording video at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius with Image Stabilization turned on. Twitter startet Werbeformat "Promoted Accounts"
Twitter hat auf der Konferenz Mixx des Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) in New York ein neues Werbeformat für seinen Mikrobloggingdienst vorgestellt. Wie die New York Times berichtet, können Werbetreibende mithilfe sogenannter Promoted Accounts dafür sorgen, dass sie in der "Who to follow"-Liste erscheinen, mit der Twitter seinen Nutzern vorschlägt, anderen Mitgliedern zu folgen. Die Auswahl erfolgt nach einem Algorithmus, der die Interessen der Nutzer berücksichtigt.

Apple und Google führen mobilen Werbemarkt an
Nur wenige Monate nach dem Start von iAd scheint Apple zu Google, dem bisherigen Leader im Werbemarkt auf Mobilgeräten, aufgeschlossen zu haben. Einer Schätzung des Marktforschungsunternehmens IDC zufolge wird Google bis Jahresende auf einen Marktanteil (in den Vereinigten Staaten) von 21 Prozent kommen. Dies entspricht einem Rückgang von sechs Prozentpunkten im Vergleich zum Vorjahr. Apple besitzt ebenfalls 21 Prozent Marktanteil und liegt damit gemeinsam mit Google an der Spitze. Microsofts Marktanteil im mobilen Werbegeschäft ging von zehn auf sieben Prozent zurück. Das gesamte Marktvolumen in den USA schätzt IDC auf 500 Millionen US-Dollar. Das ist mehr als doppelt so viel wie noch im vergangenen Jahr.

It's tough for yet another Flip-like camcorder to stand out these days, but GE might just stand a better chance than most with its new DV1 model, which adds a waterproof, shockproof enclosure to the familiar form factor. PDF Studio update adds measurement calibration
PDF Studio, a full-featured PDF editor positioned as an alternative to the more expensive Adobe Acrobat, has upgraded to v6.5 -- a significant update that adds several new features and offers improvements in every area. The most significant changes include a new batch dialog to manage, open and view several documents at once on startup, a new callout annotation tool, a calibration tool to supplement the existing measuring tool which will allow users to set scale directly from a drawing, and dragging and dropping pages across documents, among others.

Star Wars flicks to see 3D re-release, starting with Episode 1 in 2012?
The Star Wars series hasn't even hit Blu-ray yet, but The Hollywood Reporter reports sources saying George Lucas definitely intends to refill his money pit in 2012 by bringing out the movies, one each year, in 3D. Mozilla: No plans to build Firefox browser for the iPhone
Mozilla has outlined its future plans for Firefox Home, the App Store utility that serves as a bridge between the desktop Firefox experience and iOS browsers. Although the app has been periodically updated with additional features from the desktop software, the company claims it is not working to make mobile Firefox browser for the iPhone.

TUAW review: DomainBrain
I'm not much of a collector, but I do have an inordinate number of websites and domains to my name. How did that happen? You get an idea, buy a domain and set up a site. Repeat that process a few times and you find yourself in my situation.
What's worse is that I've been storing the login creds, database details, registrar information and so much more in text files. Trying to find any bit of data is a real hassle, not to mention a security risk. Thank goodness for DomainBrain. PluralEyes for Final Cut Pro gains multiclip management
Singluar Software's PluralEyes, a software companion to Final Cut Pro that allows for synchronizing multiple sources of audio to FCP video sequences without timecodes or clappers, has been updated to v1.2 which the company describes as "a major update," and brings new merged clips management and support for locked tracks, along with support for audio from DSLR video-shooting cameras.

Ivi hit with lawsuit over unauthorized use of TV shows
Several broadcasters have filed a lawsuit against Ivi TV after the startup defied cease-and-desist demands to stop retransmitting broadcast TV signals via the Internet without permission. Fox, ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS have accused the small company of copyright infringement for its web-based streaming service, which provides access to over 20 channels for $5/month.

Apple posts iOS 4.2 beta 2, iTunes 10.1 beta
Apple tonight posted both iOS 4.2 beta 2 and a new, first beta of iTunes 10.1 to the Developer Center. It's unclear what the two provide besides bug fixes, although iTunes 10.1 is said to support some level of printing and is likely needed to make a computer an AirPlay target. More details are expected soon.

MacNN reviews PCSync 6.0 for Macs, PCs
MacNN has reviewed PCsync for Mac, describing how the recently PC-only software works with its new Mac-host that allows for PC-to-Mac syncing. The syncs are good but Mac-PC file-naming differences are an issue and the Mac software feels like PC software, in that it is slightly counter-intuitive.

Briefly: ThemePAK updates to widescreen, Jumsoft iWeb themes
DVDthemePAK.com has announced that all of its ThemePAK collections and button products are now available with widescreen formatting and theme family features. Every theme also now includes two templates, one for the main screen and one for the chapters screen. Additionally, the company has made each theme available as a digital download, and is now selling individual themes in addition to the standard ThemePAK collections. iDVD ThemePAK collections are priced between $30 and $40, while individual themes sell for $10.

Italian Tourism official not too happy with iPhone travel app
iPhone travel app What Country describes Italy as "Pizza, Mafia, Pasta and Scooters." That isn't sitting too well with Italian Tourism Minister Michela Vittoria Brambilla, who says the app's description of her country is offensive and is threatening legal action against the developers, Apalon of Belarus.
The US $0.99 app is rated pretty highly by users in the App Store, and is described as having "a light-hearted and funny view of the world."

Onkyo dropping three Windows 7 slates on totally-suspicious-by-now public
Never saw this coming, did you? Oh, right, you did. Onkyo is joining the Windows 7 slate tablet fray with three new models, which will begin shipping next month in Japan. The variety is minor, though each tablet is getting its own design language: the 11.6-inch and 10.1-inch TW317A5 and TW217A5 both rock 32GB SSDs, while the TW117A4 kicks it old school with a 160GB HDD. Thanks to Windows 7 Home Premium the trio will be getting all the touch-friendly benefits the OS can offer, and Atom N450 and Z530 processors will sipping battery on behalf of the machines. Fable 3 getting 'smartphone' tie-in game called 'Kingmaker'
Just the other day I was talking about larger gaming companies using iPhone games to promote their major titles, and here you go: Microsoft and Lionhead Studios' Peter Molyneaux are set to introduce a "smartphone" game next week (presumably that means iPhone, although given that it's Microsoft, it might not be) that will tie-in to the upcoming Fable 3 release on the Xbox 360. Sony's Google TV makes an early public appearance, reveals little
We weren't expecting to see Sony's first Google TV for a few more days, but that didn't stop this 46-inch LCD from showing up today at Best Buy's press event in New York. It's a three part system (if you want it to be), consisting of the EVS-2000, EVS-3000 and EVS-4000. Bonzai3D update v2.2 adds Artlantis support
AutoDesSys, the 3D imaging company best known for their modelling software FormïZ, have updated their 3D design program Bonzai3D to v.2.2, adding support for Abvent's Artlantis and two new languages (French and Czech) along with 75 minor fixes and improvements -- but the software has also had to modify support for Google Sketchup's 3D Warehouse and Google Earth due to changes on Google's part, meaning users will have to adapt to new ways of using these components.

The ever-growing iTunes basket
The Guardian puts to words something I've been thinking for a long time: that iTunes is actually Apple's weakest link. You'd be forgiven for believing the opposite -- iTunes is arguably Apple's strongest brand, given that it encompasses all of the "mobile device company's" products, and remains the springboard for all iPhones, iPods, and iPads, even across into Windows-land. I'm sure there are even non-Apple customers that use iTunes to organize and even share their music. So there's no question that iTunes is a powerful component of Apple's success so far.
