Yesterday, we saw that LG's Optimus One might ship with WiFi calling, and that's all well and good, but a new leak suggests the Optimus was just the tip of a UMA iceberg to come. European Union closes Apple investigation
I think we can call this one "saved by a policy change." Earlier this month Apple changed its rules and is now allowing developers to use third-party tools for creating apps for iOS devices. In a statement released this weekend, the EU said it welcomed Apple's changed policies, and that the investigation would be closed.
Apple also loosened policies on cross-border warranty repair of computers and iOS products. Previously people who bought a product in one EU country and tried to have it fixed under warranty in another EU country encountered red tape or a refusal to fix the product, but apparently t

Sling founder concocts Crestron home automation app for Android, demos it on Galaxy Tab
Two years ago in Denver, we watched as a Crestron iPhone app wowed crowds at CEDIA. At this year's show in Atlanta, a similar app has been unveiled for a rival platform: Android. Apple entgeht EU-Wettbewerbsverfahren

iPad: Geschmacksmustereintrag untermauert angedachten zweiten Dock-Anschluss
Zwei Geschmackmustereinträge beim Patentamt in Hongkong (1001055.9M001, 1001055.9M002) zeigen, dass Apple für das iPad ursprünglich tatsächlich zwei Dock-Anschlüsse vorgesehen hatte. Zu dem gewohnten Anschluss an der Unterseite wäre ein weiterer Dock-Anschluss auf der linken Außenseite hinzugekommen, so dass das iPad beispielsweise auch im Querformat ins eigene Dock gepasst hätte. iPhone 4 hits UAE and Qatar, but without FaceTime installed
The iPhone 4 launched this weekend in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, but buyers wound up with a surprise -- their handset's front-facing cameras couldn't do FaceTime. HyperDock puts some Win7 in your OS X Dock
My shocking day job revelation: I write enterprise Java software using Windows. There, my secret shame is finally out.
Now that's off my chest I have something to confess about Windows 7: Microsoft must be doing something right because I hate it considerably less than any other version of Windows. For example, it might have taken it eight years to bring the draggable reorder feature from OS X 10.0's Dock into the Windows Taskbar, but they got there in the end and I'm a happier user for it.
One of the things I quite like is Aero Peek. Suppose you are juggling three PowerPoint presentations because you are a SRS BSNS enterprise user so obviously you're not doing anything fun. You move your cursor down to the PowerPoint icon

Crazy, beautiful human being designs 3D raycaster engine for Arduino
Look, not everybody gets to be super smart. Some of us have to struggle along with our mediocre intellects and just bask in the glory of genius. Like this time: we ran into Adam Wolf at Maker Faire in New York, and while many burgeoning hackers were using their Arduino to flip LEDs on and off in vaguely interesting ways, Adam was showing off a 3D raycaster engine. It's like witnessing some sort of alternate history where Wolfenstein 3D came out for Atari first. Mac 101: Open new tabs to reveal browsing history in Safari
Safari's Top Sites feature is nifty and all, but what I've really wanted to do is have new Safari tabs open showing me my recent browsing history. I couldn't figure out a way to do this until just now. Maybe if you're an experienced Safari user this is obvious, but I'm still a fairly recent Safari adopter.
If you look in Safari's preferences, it will show that new tabs can be set to Top Sites, Home Page, Empty Page, Same Page, or Bookmarks. No 'History' option. The good news is that you can work around this by choosing "Bookmarks" (as shown above) and then click on "History" under "Collections" at the top-left of the window.
Safari remembers what you had selected in the Bookmarks window, so whenever you open a new tab, it will open to the Bookma

EU gegen Apple: Hersteller lenkt bei Reparaturrichtlinien ein

New DirectTV TiVo delayed into 2011
The DirectTV TiVo that was set to be delivered before the end of 2010 before the end of 2010 has now been delayed until 2011. CEO Tom Rogers has indicated that beta testing for the device will continue into next January. Am gestrigen Tag wurde der Apple Store Oberhausen eröffnet und wie schon bei den Stores in München, Hamburg und Frankfurt wollten sich viele Apple-Fans dieses Erlebnis nicht entgehen lassen. Konkurrenz für Google: Nokia arbeitet an einer eigenen Street View

Nokia plant laut Wirtschaftswoche, eine noch viel detailliertere Street View als Google zu erstellen: Mit 360-Grad-Kameras, Lasergeräten und Satellitenpositionierung ausgerüstete Spezialfahrzeuge werden ein "haargenaues 3-D-Bild der Umgebung produzieren". Loslegen will Geodaten-Anbieter Navteq, eine Nokia-Tochter, in Frankreich und Großbritannien. Netduino Plus earns you Ethernet and microSD, an approving nod from Microsoft
The two new Arduinos should spell good things for the Arduino heads out there, but meanwhile, on the other side of the tracks Secret Labs is launching its .NET-friendly Netduino Plus, which adds Ethernet and microSD to a regular Netduino board (which in itself is a sort of high powered, Visual Studio-compatible Arduino, with a 32-bit 48MHz ARM7 processor, instead of Arduino's 8-bit number, but pin compatible with Arduino "shields"). Arduino is so much about what is made with Arduino boards that we hardly spare a thought for the boards themselves. Well, Arduino cares, and they've just gone about redesigning their base model, now dubbed the Arduino Uno. It's of course backwards compatible with existing Arduino add-ons, but sets itself apart with a new USB controller with lower latency and driver-free operation on Mac and Linux. This should make Arduino slightly more friendly to the super novices, but of course the USB chip can be reprogrammed by the experts to be all sorts of things.
