HP says its webOS tablets will resemble the iPad
HP in a circulating developer memo from Peter Helm has likened its upcoming webOS tablet to Apple's. In addition to saying the former Palm team was going "full speed ahead" with an apps initiative after being acquired, he explained to developers that HP was working on both webOS for more phones as well as "tablet-style devices similar to the iPad." The PC builder has said for months that it has planned a webOS tablet but until now hasn't made any direct allusions to Apple.

HP and Oracle kiss, make up, agree that Mark's better off with Larry
Guess it wasn't "virtually impossible" for Oracle and HP to work together after all -- the two companies have settled their little tiff over disgraced former HP CEO Mark Hurd. According to the statement we just received, Oracle and HP have "reaffirmed their long-term strategic partnership" and have decided that ol' Mark can "protect HP's confidential information while fulfilling his responsibilities at Oracle." OnLive rolls out beta support for game streaming over Wi-Fi
OnLive this weekend switched on a Wi-Fi play beta. The Mac and Windows service had previously needed a wired link to stream games without hiccups but is now optimized to address the possible temporary interruptions and other connection issues with wireless. Using the wireless induces some extra lag but otherwise works the same as for wired.

iPad newsstand has minimum of one company onboard
At least one company is willing to sell subscriptions through an iPad newsstand, Apple is allegedly telling publishers. The information comes by way of an anonymous source, who suggests that Apple is using the claim to lure more content providers in. Other sources add that Hearst -- parent of magazines like Esquire, and newspapers like the San Francisco Chronicle -- has been more accommodating to Apple's plans than other major publishers.

Sony's PlayStation division looking for engineers with Android dev experience
It's been just over a month since we broke the news that Sony's working on an Android 3.0-based gaming phone with PlayStation branding, and a new job posting seems to indicate that progress is being made -- the PlayStation division is looking for a senior server engineer in London with "experience in mobile development, specifically Android." The rest of the listing sounds like this person will be involved in running an online game service, which certainly makes sense; Sony would do well to counter Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7 and Apple's Game Center with PSN on their own device. London, New York on track for subway cellular coverage?
After nearly three years of setbacks, if New York City isn't careful it looks like London just might win the race to extend cellular service to its underground transit system. The plan laid out by London Mayor Boris Johnson calls for the UK's big five wireless carriers (Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, and 3) to cover the cost (some "hundreds of millions of pounds," according to the Telegraph) for a system that should hopefully wire the Tube by the 2012 Olympics. Apple releases Security Update 2010-006
Yes, as you can see above (and in a Software Update near you), Apple has released Security Update 2010-006, the latest OS X issue-fixer of the year. It's recommended for all users, so run your SU, let it download and install, and you'll be good to go.
This one apparently fixes an issue where a remote attacker could have snuck into AFP shared folders without having a password. Apple releases OS Security Updates a few times a year, and given how simple it is to update and install them, you should go ahead and update as soon as possible.

NimbleBit: Over half a million playing Pocket Frogs, "3-4%" buying in-app purchases
I've been playing NimbleBit's freemium Pocket Frogs game since it was released last week, and apparently I'm not the only one -- Ian Marsh tells TUAW that the game has been downloaded by half a million people so far. The company is also seeing 200K daily active users, and while Marsh couldn't share exact stats on how many people have taken advantage of the game's in-app purchases, he estimates that 3-9% of the player base have bought stamps or potions in the game.

Apple's supplier orders extending out as far as early 2011
Apple's device orders are so heavy that it's already asking suppliers for orders as distant as early 2011, assemblers and chipset makers said on Monday. iPad, iPhone, iPod and MacBook demand is strong enough that Apple is scheduling orders into next year. Sicherheitsupdate 2010-006 für Mac OS X 10.6.4 schließt AFP-Schwachstelle
Apple veröffentlichte soeben das Sicherheitsupdate 2010-006 für Mac OS X 10.6.4, das eine spezifische Sicherheitslücke im AFP-Server schließt. Diese erlaubt(e) einem Angreifer auch ohne bekanntes Passwort auf einen per "Dateifreigabe" freigegeben Ordner zuzugreifen, entsprecht bald sollte das Update bei Nutzung von File-Sharing eingespielt werden. New Snow Leopard security update fixes AFP vulnerability
Apple has released a new patch for Snow Leopard, Security Update 2010-006. In contrast with some other updates, the new one fixes just a single vulnerability, found in the Apple File Protocol. Through an error handling problem in AFP Server, an attacker knowing a person's account name could bypass password screening and access files in shared folders.

HP reveals AirPrint-friendly printers
When iOS 4.2 makes it to the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch in November, we'll finally be able to print from those devices with a native Apple capability called AirPrint. In most cases, you'll need to have a printer that has been shared on a Mac or PC, since AirPrint won't have drivers available for the huge variety of printers that exist.

VLC Media Player comes to iPad
VideoLAN's cross-platform media player, VLC, has finally been released in promised iPad form at the App Store. The app allows playback of video formats outside of Apple's normal MPEG-4/H.264 combination; developer Applidium notes, in fact, that most publicly available codecs should be supported. Pixel Qi have issued a status update stating that they are currently ready a seven-inch screen for tablets and e-readers set for mass production in the first half of 2011. VLC for iPad hits the store
Just like that, the multi-format video playback app VLC has now made it to the App Store in the form of VLC Media Player for iPad. As Chris reported a couple of weeks ago, the much-beloved open source media tool has been ported and is now available for free download.

Facebook phone still thought in works, Android in tow
Despite trying to debunk rumors of a self-made phone, Facebook today was claimed to both still be working on the project but to have picked its choice of OS. A source for SAI maintained that the phone would use Android as its foundation and focus mostly on making the platform more aware of the social network. Dragon Dictate for Mac now available
That didn't take long. Earlier this year, Nuance Communications took over the MacSpeech product, with the intention of improving what was already a good application.
That has now been accomplished, and today Dragon Dictate is available for the Macintosh platform -- a reasonably priced upgrade for MacSpeech users.
The new version offers easier editing, the ability to switch between different microphones, and it uses a computer voice to proofread your dictated documents. The speech engine has been updated to new state-of-the-art technology.

Apple has bought out Polar Rose
Apple has spent a little bit of that huge cash surplus to buy Polar Rose, a Sweden-based technology company that focuses on face recognition. In a blog post dated September 2nd, Thijs Stalenhoef notes that their face-tagging service is closing down, and, "You may yet see our technology in one of our licensees' products in the future."

Nokia N8 delayed 'for a few weeks to do some final amends'
Sounds like it's not much of a delay -- but be that as it may, if you were hoping to pick up your colorful N8 in the tail end of this month well, we don't quite know how to say this, but you're going to want to make other plans. Backing up rumors that have been going around the past couple days, locales that had expected to get the N8 in September have now been pushed back to October while Nokia makes "some final amends." South African iPhone 4 tipped for Wednesday launch
South Africa will get the iPhone 4 on Wednesday, September 22nd, a national business site reports. Two carriers are said to have confirmed launches, namely Vodacom and MTN. Apple in an SEC filing today revealed that it has struck a "multi-year agreement" with Rovi in what may be a strategy to support the new Apple TV. The terms are considered secret but will let Apple license Rovi's technology over the course of the deal. Neither company has commented on the plans.

RIM files 'SurfBook' trademark in Canada, cyberspace awaits
It's pretty common for companies in the heat of product development to file for trademarks, domain names, and patents first and ask questions later, so we can understand (we guess) that RIM took the initiative to put the milquetoast "BlackPad" on lock earlier this year for the tablet it's almost certainly working on -- the logic, of course, is that if you fire enough shots in the dark, at least one of your filings isn't going to suck. Google preps Google Docs editing for iPad, Android
Google has announced that Google Docs, its online productivity suite, will soon support editing via the iPad or an Android device. The technology should roll out during "the next few weeks," and at least allow co-editing of documents produced by others. Support for authoring is unmentioned so far. On a desktop or notebook PC, Docs users have access to form, illustration, presentation, spreadsheet and word processing tools.

Rumor: Apple's newspaper subscriptions could debut next month
Last week the Mercury News reported that Apple is working on plans to sell newspaper subscriptions to iPad owners. Today, a follow-up from the Wall Street Journal suggests that it could launch as early as next month, and will include magazines as well.
While Apple declined to comment, the WSJ's sources note that plans are moving forward, even though publishers are hesitant. Some see Apple's dominance over the online music market as foreboding, while others are leery of Apple's typical 30 percent cut.

Ubuntu prototype uses face recognition to intelligently move UI elements (video)

RIM files for SurfBook trademark; smartbook, tablet in mind?
RIM has fueled speculation about its BlackBerry-influenced tablet with a recently discovered trademark filing. An application at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) for a SurfBook name is vague about the uses of the name but would cover all of the likely devices RIM could make, such as a tablet, a computer or a smartphone. A matching trademark hasn't the US, but it's unknown if RIM is simply waiting or is considering using different names in different countries.

Aus einem Bericht an die US-Börsenaufsichtsbehörde SEC geht hervor, dass Apple mit einem Unternehmen namens Rovi Verträge zur Lizenzierung von Technologie abgeschlossen hat. Kaufman ups AAPL target to $374 based on iPad
Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu has raised his target for Apple stock from $350 to $374, citing the potential of "significant upside" to iPad shipments. Sources are said to indicate better screen supplies, eliminating a significant production bottleneck. Pop musician Lily Allen to sue Apple
After singer Lily Allen's laptop was hacked into, she turned to Apple for help in identifying the attacker. When they refused, she decided to sue Apple into helping her, according to The Sun.
As The Next Web points out, the Sun's article is brief (to say the least) and the backstory -- was Allen's initial request for help refused by Apple? -- is dubious. It sounds to us like she's motivated to find the attacker, and the lawsuit is not necessarily designed to punish Apple. It seems there are 3rd-party companies that would gladly do what Allen's after, so we're not sure why she's suing Apple.

HTC Android tablet may pack Tegra 2, 720p screen
HTC's rumored Android 3.0 tablet may aim for the high end of the space to claim an edge over Apple. A purported leak from component suppliers has it getting a very sharp 1280x720 screen as well as NVIDIA's dual-core Tegra 250 processor to drive it. AT&T's mobile data plans expanded today with its first options for prepaid data. The DataConnect Pass gives those with a 3G modem or built-in 3G in a notebook the option of paying for just a short stint of data without having to commit to a contract. 7-inch iPad claimed coming with front and back cameras
At times contentious Rodman & Renshaw analyst Ashok Kumar today claimed that a seven-inch iPad was not only coming but that at least one future iPad would have dual cameras. While suspicions have been raised that Apple would at least have a front camera for FaceTime support, the researcher believed that it would have both front and back cameras. The finished devices would arrive sometime in 2011, Kumar said.

Taiwanese carriers can't meet iPhone 4 pre-orders
Taiwanese customers placed 200,000 iPhone 4 pre-orders, yet carriers fear that only about one-fourth of those orders will be filled by the end of the year.
iPhonetouch.Blorge reports that Apple's three Taiwanese carrier partners, Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone, had access to a mere 1,800 iPhone 4s when they finally became available on September 15th. Additionally, the carriers expect to receive no more than 50,000 units before the year's end.

T-Mobile hat am Samstag begonnen, ein Update auf Android 2.2 (Codename Froyo) für das gebrandete HTC Desire an seine Kunden auszuliefern. Israel, Turkey, Thailand and others to get iPhone 4
The iPhone 4 should be launching in several more countries over the course of the next week. Three rollouts are scheduled for September 24th, when Israel will get the phone through Orange, Turkey through Turkcell and Vodafone, and Thailand via TrueMove. BMW kickstarts iPad OEM accessories for cars
BMW has showcased its plans for iPad OEM accessories at the Paris motorshow, signalling that the device is set to supplant the traditional car-based DVD unit with flip down screen as the future of in-car entertainment. C64-Emulator: Nun auch mit Basic-Interpreter

Autodesk mit grossen Plänen für die Mac-Plattform
Vor wenigen Wochen überraschte der amerikanische Softwarekonzern Autodesk mit der Ankündigung, die CAD-Software AutoCAD nach 18 Jahren wieder für den Mac anzubieten. Neben dem Animationsprogramm Maya wäre AutoCAD das zweite Softwareprodukt von Autodesk, welches für Mac OS X erhältlich sein wird. 100’000 iPhone 4 in der Schweiz verkauft
Wie ApfelBlog.ch unter Bezugnahme eines Artikels der SonntagsZeitung berichtet, hat Apple in den ersten sieben Wochen seit dem Verkaufsstart mehr als 100’000 iPhone 4 in der Schweiz verkauft. Demzufolge habe die Swisscom bereits rund 50’000 Exemplare des neuen iPhones abgesetzt, Sunrise kommt auf bisher 25’000 und Orange auf 20’000 verkaufte Geräte. Nicht berücksichtigt sind offenbar all jene iPhones, welche direkt über Apple bezogen wurden. Bei allen drei Mobilfunkanbietern ist nach wie vor mit langen Lieferzeiten zu rechnen. Apple tonight confirmed plans to launch the iPhone 4 in China and added the surprise of two new Chinese stores. The device will go on sale in the country on September 25 at 8AM local time. iPhone launch in China gets official date of 9/25
In a Sunday press release, Apple announced an on-sale date for the iPhone 4 in China. Saturday, September 25, 8 am is when customers in the world's largest market can get their hands on the new phones; both the Apple Store Hong Kong Plaza in Shanghai and the Apple Store Xidan Joy City in Beijing will be carrying them, coinciding with the opening of the Bejing store.
China Unicom (the phone's domestic carrier) will also be selling them in retail stores. Just as in other countries, new purchases via China Unicom will require a two year service contract; however, the phone will also be available contract-free at the Apple stores.
Suggested retail price for the phone is CNY4,999 for the 16GB model

Fujifilm intros vintage-styled X100 pro compact
Fujifilm helped kick off the start of Photokina a day early by launching the FinePix X100. The 12.3-megapixel camera carries a 1950s metal-and-leather body but is targeted at pros who need a close-up camera or hobbyists who thrive on macro or near-macro shots. An APS-C sized CMOS sensor using Fujifilm's EXR technology gives it DSLR-level light sensitivity and is helped by a fixed-in-place but bright and fast 23mm f2 prime lens.
