SD Card Association: flash card speeds to triple by 2012
The SD Card Association (truth be told, one of our favorite card-related associations) has a new spec in the works that will almost triple the speed of its SDHC and SDXC cards, according to CNET. The specification, which should be complete Q1 next year, will achieve 300MB per second by adding a second row of electrical contacts on the bottom face of the card, and will be backward compatible with older, slower devices. Analyst: Apple producing more iPads
Analyst Katy Huberty from Morgan Stanley tells All Things D that she believes Apple is ramping up production on the iPad, aiming to build as many as three million a month by the end of this year. That would mean that the company could make 36 million iPads next year, which brings the total close to (but not quite) the whopping 40 million units predicted by her supply chain analysis. Sales estimates for next year started out around 10 million iPads, but have since risen to as high as 42 million units, which would be quite a year for a product that didn't exist before this past April.

Klipsch issues first on-ear headphones, Image S5i Rugged and bargain Image S3 earbuds
It's been awhile since we sashayed through Klipsch's world headquarters back in December of last year, but the company certainly hasn't let off of the pedal. Today at IFA, it managed to introduce no fewer than three new headphones, including the outfit's very first on-ear set. Xcode 4: Weitere Vorabversion erschienen

Belkin, Waterfield unveil cases for the new iPod touch
Following Apple's announcement of the fourth-generation iPod touch, Belkin and WaterField have launched cases for the new iOS device. Belkin has announced 14 new cases -- five grip cases, two shield cases, four verve cases and three armbands. The grip cases are textured for easier handholding. The Grip Ergo with Strap features a fitted design and a removable strap, in translucent black or taro, while the Grip Groove Duo has a wavy texture and arrives in either black-and-clear or gray-and-purple color combinations. Mobee intros wireless charger for Apple's Magic Mouse
Mobee today caused a minor stir at IFA by unveiling the Magic Charger. The peripheral uses the same induction behind devices like the PowerMat to recharge Apple's Magic Mouse without wires. By replacing the regular battery section and cover with a special rechargeable pack, the device can run for about six days without gaining any weight or bulk.

Fixing broken iTunes Automator workflows in iTunes 10
If you depend on Automator workflows for managing music or other tasks in iTunes, the upgrade to version 10 may have come as a bit of a cold shock. Macworld pointed out that most available workflows for iTunes simply would not load with iTunes 10; a frustrating circumstance, to be sure.
Fortunately, the problem turns out not to be that complicated; Automator's version checking thinks that iTunes 10.0 is a lower version than 9.0, because the versions are sorting alphabetically instead of numerically (oof!).

App Review: Angry Birds (Android)
What does it take to make an addictive game? Not much -- just throw in some super simple controls, cute graphics, and basic physics. Rovio Mobile's Angry Birds is one such game that includes all these elements, and today the studio's just released a public Android beta to cater those without an iOS or Ovi-enabled device. Briefly: Demo Cup finalists announced, iWeb themes launched
The jury for this year's Demo Cup, an open source competition that takes place during the Open World Forum, has sorted through entries and picked 13 finalists. The finalists include a variety of different products including the Mozilla 4 project from Mozilla, the Accelo project from Obeo, and the EveryDesk project from Conecta. The 13 finalists will compete against each other on October 1, demonstrating their products with an eight minute presentation. Following the presentations, the jury will hand out five Open Innovation Awards recognizing the most convincing demo

Vodafone's Microsoft Surface: like Go Fish for phones
Microsoft worked with Vodafone late last year to deploy Surfaces to a few dozen stores in several European countries (much as AT&T has done in the US), and one of those units happens to be set up at the carrier's IFA booth this week. The basic idea here is that each available model appears as a card that can be twirled, resized, and flung around the screen. When the software first starts, the cards start in a deck from which you can "deal" onto the table -- but when we first approached it, the Surface had obviously already been played with because the cards were in complete disarray. LG's 180-inch plasma that wasn't
When we first caught wind of LG's "180-inch plasma" we were understandably enthused (and just a little skeptical), but our excitement was quickly ruined with word that LG was merely sticking nine 600Hz 60-inch plasmas next to each other and calling it a day. We got a glimpse at the "multi-vision display" (LG shorthand for "a bunch of screens next to each other") today, and it's still decently impressive in its own right. LG's managed to get the seams between the screens down to a mere 1.5mm, and while the lines are still noticeable, they could be a lot worse. Apple optimizes Movie Trailers page for HTML5
Apple has expanded its Movie Trailers page with new features based on iOS-friendly HTML5 standards. The portal now includes a Showtimes page that provides a variety of information regarding closest theaters and movie schedules. Users can input a zip code and pick a theater, or allow the site to determine the closest theater.

Ringtone creation disappears from iTunes 10
The option of buying and creating ringtones has been removed from iTunes 10, users note. Under the software's View Options menu, the earlier "Ringtone" column has been removed; this previously let people know if it was possible to turn tracks from the iTunes Store into ringtones for an extra 99 cents. Throughout the rest of the program, the only references to ringtones include information on syncing and the Ringtones tab under the Library.

News: OpenFeint brings cross-platform gaming for iOS and Android
Aurora Feint has announced plans to expand its OpenFeint social gaming network to connect users on both iOS and Android devices. Named OpenFeint PlayTime, the service will allow multiplayer gameplay, matchmaking, and even real-time voice chat between users playing games on iOS and Android devices. The service is currently available in a private beta; iOS and Android developers can apply to the program at the OpenFeint Developer page. No further details…

Apple trailers page adds showtimes and theater maps
Since people still seem to want to leave their houses and go to the movies (despite Apple's best efforts to keep them firmly on their couches), the iTunes Movie Trailers site now features a sophisticated Showtimes view. This HTML5-savvy offering uses location awareness in your browser to show the movies playing nearest you, along with the upcoming screening schedule and links to the theater sites for ticket purchases.
The site works great in Safari, Firefox 3 or Chrome on your Mac; it also works perfectly on the iPad, although on the iPhone it's a little bit compact.

Panasonic cranks out new 31 and 19 Series Toughbooks for Japan
Panasonic's gone on a real tear here, releasing two new Toughbook models at once. While you grapple with the implications of such a thing, let's get down to details. The new 31 and 19 Series Toughbooks are 13.1-inch and 10.4-inch models, respectively, and as far as specs go, they both pack in a 160GB hard drive, up to 6GB of DDR3 SDRAM (with 2GB coming standard), and Intel QM57 Express chipset, and 1024 x 768 resolution displays. Nikon president hints again at mini pro camera
Nikon president Makoto Kimura in a new interview has dropped hints again at an in-between camera. He told Reuters the company wanted a camera "different from SLRs and compacts" and hoped to create a new category. It wouldn't be like typical mirrorless models, although Kimura wasn't clear on whether it would still be mirrored or occupy a pro point-and-shoot space like the Canon G11.

Antec expands into audio with virtual 3D speakers
Normally known for its computer cases and power supplies, Antec has announced a new 2.1-channel speaker system which it says will deliver realistic 3D soundscapes for movies and games. The Soundscience's anodized aluminum satellite speakers accept either digital or analog input. An external toggle switches the speakers between stereo and Antec's proprietary 3D sound mode.

Flick this! Croke puts Crokinole on the iPhone
Crokinole is a beautiful, simple game with a long history. In the tradition of pool and Carrom, Crokinole is a dexterity game that pits two (or four) people against each other around a circular wooden board. Players try to flick little wooden discs towards the center, knocking out opponent's discs if they're in the target area. It takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to get frustrated at because you're just not good enough.

Apple hatte in Sachen Webstandards dank dem eigenen WebKit immer eine führende Rolle. Seit diesem Jahr stellen Apple und auch Google in hoher Dichte immer ausgeklügeltere HTML5- und CSS3-Seiten ins Internet. Als neustes Beispiel für eine Webseite, die neue HTML5-Techniken benutzt, hat Apple die beliebte «iTunes Movie Trailers»-Seite um ein neues Angebot ergänzt, neu können nach Kinovorführungen einzelner Filme gesucht werden. Aktuell gibt es dieses «Showtimes»-Angebot nur für Städte in den USA. Die Seite baut unter anderem auf «HTML5 Geolocation», damit kann ein Browser auf Positionsdaten zurückgreifen, die entweder über das Mobilfunknetz oder über das den WLAN- oder kabelgebundenen-Internet-Zugang ausgelesen werden. Die «Showtimes»-Seite benutzt diese Daten, um dem Besucher der Seite direkt die kommenden Kinovorführungen rund um seine aktuelle Position anzuzeigen. El Paseo outlet to do one-time, open One to One sale
The El Paseo Apple Store -- set to open in Palm Desert, California this Saturday at 10 AM -- will be doing an unusual promotion related to the company's One to One program, reports say. Subscribers to the program can get a new Mac configured by Apple technicians, and then sign up for personal training courses on topics like iWork, Bento and the iPad. New official MeeGo screenshots show promise, influence
MeeGo's official user interface guidelines could easily end up determining whether the platform sinks or swims -- no one wants a phone whose UI looks like junk, after all. Samsung hopes to crack 10% smartphone share, sell 25m units
Samsung hopes to break through the 10 percent mark in smartphone share by the end of 2010, the company' mobile group head JK Shin said at the IFA show today [sub. required]. He was optimistic about Samsung's success in light of the Galaxy S and explained that Samsung now expects to ship 25 million smartphones this year, up from an earlier prediction of 18 million. It may ship as many as 50 million smartphones in 2011.

How Apple's newest iPods prove (and disprove) that it learns from design mistakes
When Apple released the third-generation iPod shuffle in 2009, I saw it as a perfect example of the design hubris that many Apple detractors point to. From a usability perspective, there really wasn't anything wrong with the second-generation iPod shuffle -- it had a minimal number of buttons, true, but their functions were fairly obvious. Xbox 360's transforming D-pad controller gets handled on video
Boy, we've gone from rumor to hands-on experience in just a couple of days with this thing. Microsoft's November 9-bound Xbox 360 controller refresh couldn't escape the clutches of Joystiq, who have put together a neat photo gallery and video overview. Apple CEO Steve Jobs will be getting a Lifetime Achievement in Technology award from the Vision Awards come September 23rd, says the Beverly Hills Courier. Rydeen hopes to cash in on tablet fever with Android-based, Armada-powered PND
You may never have heard of auto electronics provider Rydeen Mobile, but it certainly knows of you -- or more specifically, your desire to obtain a slick new tablet PC -- and has thus created an 7-inch Android tablet that integrates the dedicated map functionality of its GPS machines. The "gPad" GCOM701 won't be a terribly high-end device, mind you, with an 800MHz ARMADA 166 SOC, 256MB of RAM, bring-your-own-microSD-storage and what we're led to believe is a resistive touchscreen, but it sounds like at least Rydeen isn't being stingy on the software front. Ping under fire from spammers, says security firm
Despite being active for just a few days, Apple's Ping social network is already being invaded by spammers, says a Sophos security analyst. Some profiles, such as Katy Perry's, are reportedly being flooded with messages, often from scammers promising free Apple gear. "If half as many free iPads, iPhones and iPods were being given away as Ping comments might lead you to believe, there would be no reason to bother with going to an Apple store," comments Sophos' Chester Wisniewski.

Apple awarded new patents
This past week, Apple had a host of new patents officially approved by the US Patent and Trademark Office. From streamlining the way images are rendered to preventing the accidental opening of applications, a large chunk of the patents seem to relate to the ways that a user interacts with a device. Macsimum News has a synopsis of all the patents awarded.

Apple manufacturers churning out 2 million iPads per month
Apple has greatly ramped up iPad production in the past few weeks, says Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. Manufacturing partners are now said to be delivering 2 million iPads per month, double recent levels. The increase is likely the explanation behind current iPad shipping times, which have plummeted from 7 to 10 days to within 24 hours. Even the iPhone 4 is still suffering from three-week delays.

Sind das die Länder die mehr iTunes Content erhalten?
Steve Jobs kündete am Mittwoch in seiner Special-Event-Keynote an, dass Apple das iTunes Film- und TV-Serien-Angebot noch dieses Jahr auf neue Märkte ausweiten werde. Aktuell bietet Apple Filme und TV-Shows über den iTunes Store in Kanada, im Vereinigten Königreich, in Frankreich, Deutschland und Australien sowie natürlich in den USA an. «Mehr Länder werden noch in diesem Jahr folgen», so die Aussage des Apple CEO am Mittwoch-Abend. Welche Länder also noch innerhalb der nächsten vier Monate in den Genuss der neuen Inhalte kommen wird, hat Apple nicht bekannt gegeben. Aber mit dem Launch von iOS 4.2 im November und der allgemeinen Verfügbarkeit von Apple TV innerhalb vom Oktober kann zumindest auf eine Marktausweitung noch zum Start des Weihnachtsgeschäftes gehofft werden.

iTunes 101: Using the Album Art widget
Here's a cool new feature in iTunes 10 that we haven't mentioned yet: when listening to any song in your library, you can double click on the album art window in the lower left hand corner to detach it from the main window and see it full size. That's not new -- you could get a closer look at the art in previous versions of iTunes. But what is new is that when you mouse over that detached art, you now get full QuickTime-style controls for your tracks. You can then minimize the main window (using those weirdly-aligned buttons, of course), and then just control the music directly from that square widget (which can also be resized any way you want).
Pretty neat, and somewhat hard to find if you don't usually zoom in to see your album art full size. This

Official iOS 4.2 page details upcoming features for iPad

Android-Zahlen: Google widerspricht Steve Jobs
Dass sich die Fronten zwischen Apple und Google, dem Anbieter des iOS-Konkurrenzsystems Android, in letzter Zeit verhärtet haben, demonstrierte Steve Jobs auf seiner Keynote am vergangenen Mittwoch gleich mehrfach. Im August verkündete Google-CEO Eric Schmidt, Google würde täglich 200’000 neue Android-Geräte aktivieren. Bei Apple sind es offenbar 230’000 iOS-Geräte pro Tag, wie Steve Jobs den Journalisten erzählte. Dabei konnte er sich auch einen kleinen Seitenhieb auf Google nicht verkneifen: «We think some of our friends are counting upgrades in their numbers». Dies hat Google nun seinerseits offenbar zu einer Richtigstellung bewegt. Die 200’000 Aktivierungen würden nur Neugeräte betreffen und zwar nur all diejenigen, welche mit Google-Services ausgestattet seien.

Maybe we're a bunch of idiots, but while the Flip and its ultra-simple camcorder ilk have certainly made shooting video simpler and more accessible for the masses, we still find many of these cameras surprisingly unintuitive or just "blah" at doing what they do (Kodak's otherwise excellent Zi8 and PlaySport cameras come to mind) when it comes to UI. The problem with the future is that it's always 3 to 5 years away. Nevertheless, what you're looking at is what Philips and Dimenco, a small company of ex-Philips engineers, say will be coming to the consumer television market as early as 2013 -- earlier if you're in the professional advertising business or just want to view your family photos on a small 3D photo frame. Just remember that Philips has been showing off variations of the glasses-free technology behind this prototype lenticular lens television for years, so we're not getting our hopes up. Kommentar: Sorgenkind Apple TV: Erfolg im zweiten Anlauf?
Zum ersten Mal seit Januar 2008 erhielt das Apple TV diese Woche eine nennenswerte Überarbeitung. Vielleicht wäre es passender, die Überarbeitung als Neubeginn zu bezeichnen. Denn in seiner bisherigen Form ist Apple TV auf dem Markt gescheitert. Dank Apples riesigen Erfolgen mit dem iPhone und dem iPad wurde dieses Scheitern von der Öffentlichkeit zwar wohlwollend übersehen, aber mit einem von einer breiten Masse ignorierten Gerät wird Apple den iTunes-Siegeszug nie bis in die anvisierten Wohnzimmer führen.
Apple TV war ein Flop. Oder, um es in Apples Worten auszudrücken, «ein Hobby» - der Ausdruck «Flop» existiert in Cupertino nicht. Wird es Apple gelingen, mit der neuen Apple-TV-Generation aus der Sackgasse zu finden?

Plex to integrate with LG TVs as "free" Apple TV alternative
Plex at IFA has revealed that its media front end is being integrated into new LG TVs and Blu-ray players. Any Internet-capable devices made in 2011 will access an online version of Plex. Although they won't have the usual local storage, they will recognize any Plex Media Servers on the local network and share their content much like the Mac and iOS clients.

SD Association vows breakthrough 300MBps SD card speeds
Following an announcement from Toshiba at IFA yesterday that it has developed SDHC memory cards based on the new UHS-1 standard, the SD Association today outlined its plans for its forthcoming SD 4.0 standard. The breakthrough means that SD 4.0 can support real-time HD video playback, whether from a media player or a camcorder. The new SD 4.0 standard is based on a dual-row pin memory design that achieves bus interface speeds of up to 300MBps, or nearly three times faster than UHS-1's 105MBps.

NVIDIA unwraps mid-range GeForce 400M notebook graphics
NVIDIA kicked off the IFA show in earnest by unveiling the rest of the GeForce 400M lineup. Like the GTX 480M, the series is built on the Fermi architecture and supports full DirectX 11 (and OpenGL 4) features, but now in thin-and-light notebooks. IFA: Vodafone bietet LTE-Zugang ab 40 Euro an
Vodafone hat auf der 50. Internationalen Funkausstellung (IFA) in Berlin (Halle 18) seine Pläne für den bundesweiten LTE-Ausbau konkretisiert und auch erste Tarife vorgestellt. Bis Dezember 2010 will der Düsseldorfer Provider über 1000 Gemeinden mit dem UMTS-Nachfolger versorgen, die bislang noch keinen Breitbandzugang haben. Der Ausbau startet Ende September, bis Ende 2011 sollen die sogenannten weißen Flecken verschwunden sein.

Netz-Marktanteile: iOS auf der Überholspur
Wie Steve Jobs diese Woche verkündete, wurden bisher über 120 Millionen Geräte mit Apples Mobile-Betriebssystem iOS ausgeliefert. iOS läuft auf dem iPhone, dem iPad und dem iPod touch. Täglich kommen rund 230’000 neue Geräte hinzu. Dieses Wachstum scheint sich auch in den Marktanteilsstatistiken im Internet niederzuschlagen. Die meisten Zugriffe im Internet erfolgen weiterhin von Windows-PCs (91.3 %) und Macs (5 %) aus, so Net Applications. Doch dahinter taucht nun iOS mit einem im August gemessenen Marktanteil von 1.1 Prozent bereits auf Rang drei auf. Dies mag auf den ersten Blick nicht nach sonderlich viel klingen, im Vergleich mit anderen Plattformen zeigt sich aber das starke Wachstum von iOS. Alle Linux-Derivate zusammen kommen noch auf 0.85 Prozent Netz-Marktanteil, nach dem dritten Rückgang in Folge. Android steht derzeit bei 0.2 Prozent, sämtliche mobilen Plattformen beanspruchen zusammengezählt einen Marktanteil von 2.6 Prozent für sich.

Keine neuen Streaming-Angebote auf altem Apple TV
Besitzer von Apples bisheriger Apple-TV-Lösung erhalten keinen Zugriff auf die neuen Funktionen, welche Apple diesen Mittwoch zusammen mit neuer Apple-TV-Hardware präsentiert hat. Dies berichtet MacRumors. Apple werde für die älteren Geräte kein Software-Update veröffentlichen, womit der Zugriff beispielsweise auf die Streaming-Angebote von Netflix verwehrt bleibe. Perhaps the worst, and least repairable, shortcoming of touchscreens is their failure to act as viable game controllers. Keyboard-equipped smartphones alleviate that pain a little (particularly if you pair them with a Game Gripper), but ultimately we'd all prefer real controllers for our real games. Such was clearly the thinking behind the homebrewed setup here, which combines an HTC EVO 4G -- with Android and an NES emulator inside -- with an Arduino board, a BlueSMiRF Bluetooth module, and a classic NES control pad. Samsung Galaxy Tab price may start where iPad stops
Samsung's Galaxy Tab could have an unsubsidized price high enough that it would be more expensive than most any Apple model, based on early if unconfirmed claims. Ringtone creationism banned iTunes 10, but DIY still seems to work
Not that we've ever been a fan of paying an additional 99 cents to turn an already-purchased track into a seconds-long ringtone, but if you fancied the option in iTunes 9.2.1, we're sad to inform you that yesterday's update seems to have nixed said option. But hey, look at this way, now you can learn a new skill: how to make iTunes 10 ringtones free of charge with some filename finagling. Apple only computer maker not lowering notebook orders?
Apple appears to be the only company immune from a falloff in notebook shipments for the month of July, according to a report from Digitimes Research senior analyst Joanne Chien. HP is said to be the hardest hit, with notebook shipments expected to reach only 39.5 million units by the end of the year. The company had set a goal of 45-47 million units.

Erneute Meldungen: iPhone-Exklusivität in Deutschland kurz vor dem Ende
Die Deutsche Telekom und Apple unterschrieben im Jahr 2007 mit der Veröffentlichung des iPhone classic einen bis heute andauernden Exklusiv-Vertrag. Dieser sicherte der Telekom die exklusiven Vertriebs- und Vermarktungsrechte aller bisher enthüllten iPhones in Deutschland. Das geschieht freilich zum Leidwesen der konkurrierenden Mobilfunkanbieter, die sich erfolglos zu wehren versuchten. Unter der Hand verkauft jedoch sowohl Vodafone als auch O2 seit Monaten iPhones an interessierte Bestandskunden. Hinzu kommt die Tatsache, dass tausende iPhones aus England über Borderlinx nach Deutschland gehen. Steve Jobs: Facebook had "onerous terms" for Ping
Steve Jobs was surprisingly candid with All Things Digital's Kara Swisher yesterday -- he reportedly told her that both Facebook and Apple had spoken about integrating more closely with the new iTunes social network Ping, but Facebook asked for "onerous terms that we could not agree to" regarding Facebook friends connecting on Ping.
He didn't elaborate, obviously, but you can see in Facebook's public documentation that Apple probably wouldn't have appreciated handing any more of its network over to Facebook than it did. A

Toshiba Camileo S30 and P20 pocket camcorders get touchscreens
Toshiba's launching some new Camileo pocket HD camcorders at IFA, and hey -- just like everything else in the world, they've sprouted three-inch touchscreens. Both offer 1080p recording and 10x digital zooms with HDMI out and support for 64GB SD storage; the £139 ($214) S30 comes in a more standard form factor that's 19mm (.7 inch) thick and features eight megapixel still photos, automatic exposure control and image stabilization, while the £119 ($183) P20 comes in a pistol grip package and takes five megapixel stills. Toshiba goes all LED with new HDTVs at IFA 2010
Besides that Android tablet, Toshiba's brought a whole slew LED-lit LCD televisions to IFA 2010. The REGZA WL Series is the company's first range of 3DTVs, available in 40-, 46- and 55-inch sizes (pictured above) with LED backlighting, 7,000,000:1 contrast ratios, it 3D Resolution+ upscaling tech and one pair of active shutter glasses bundled with each one. They're also DLNA enabled and ready for Windows 7, with the Toshiba Media Controller software making streaming content as easy as dragging and dropping a file. Roku XD and Netgear Roku XD Player hit the FCC

Toshiba outs record-setting SDHC memory cards
Toshiba has revealed new SDHC memory cards with the Ultra High Speed I (UHS-I) standard that enables them to reach maximum data read rates of 95MBps and write speeds of 80MBps. This makes them the fastest SDHC UHS-I memory cards in the world. The cards can thus far only use these speeds in USB 3.0 readers, as no camera can fully use their performance.

Compal head expects shakeout of would-be iPad rivals in 2011
Compal president Ray Chen told those at an investors' meeting that he expects the fledgling tablet industry to undergo a major thinning effect for all but Apple's iPad in 2011. He saw the entire competition moving just 10 million to 12 million tablets next year where many expect Apple to reach those numbers in 2010 with only eight months of sales. The poor results will likely see some companies quit the market after just a year, DigiTimes heard, because they falsely assumed they would automatically succeed.

Apple releases preview 3 of Xcode 4
Okay, I might be a little bit fangrrlish about the new Xcode 4 IDE. But seriously, it's really an awesome update to the existing Xcode tools. Yes, it's still majorly buggy and yes, there are still many features missing in action -- but it's such a treat to see how the new tools are evolving into their final form.

Samsung Wave 723 flaunts Bada, little else at IFA
Samsung just grew its Bada line with a low-end foil to the original Wave, the so-called Wave 723 -- and we just happened to catch it hanging out tucked away in a distributor's booth at IFA this week. Toshiba issues recall for 41,000 T Series laptops because of burn hazard
Toshiba's announced a worldwide, voluntary recall of about 41,000 T Series laptops because of a burn hazard. The laptops apparently carry the risk of overheating AC adapters which can then burn you. Toshiba has reported that its received 129 complaints, including two minor burns, about the laptops, which include the Satellite T135, Satellite T135D and Satellite Pro T130, which were sold between August of 2009 through August of 2010. Google rebuffs Apple's claims of exaggerated Android numbers
In response to Steve Jobs' disbelief that Google is seeing 200,000 Android device activations daily, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said in a response today that Android numbers do not include upgrades. He clarified further to Fortune, saying only devices that have Google services are counted. Only web-connected devices such as smartphones are accounted for where embedded and other basic devices aren't registered.

OpenFeint announces PlayTime, real-time multiplayer with voice chat for iOS and Android
Game Center is almost out in consumers' hands, but that hasn't stopped the folks at OpenFeint from pushing forward on their unofficial social network for gamers. PlayTime is a newly-announced feature of the third-party social networking software that will allow players on both iOS and Android to play in real-time with each other, and even use voice chat while doing that. OpenFeint is splitting its multiplayer services into two different paths: "Casual" games will use highscores to offer up multiplayer and even co-op challenges, while "Core" games will actually run real-time multiplayer, in conjunction with a system from a company called Exit Games.
