GEZ-Neuregelung: Ab 2013 zahlen alle
Die Rundfunkgebühr, im Volksmund auch "GEZ-Gebühr" genannt, ist für viele ohnehin schon ein rotes Tuch. Heute wurde eine Neuregelung beschlossen, die wohl auf wenig Begeisterung stoßen wird: Ab 2013 sollen alle Haushalte zahlen, auch ohne Empfangsgeräte.

O2 offers early iPhone 4 upgrade amnesty in bid to retain customers
Would you look at that. Following in the footsteps of AT&T, O2 has today announced it'll allow current customers to pay off the remainder of their contracts at a discounted rate when they re-up with the network for the iPhone 4. Irrespective of how much you're paying now, the UK carrier will charge you a flat rate of £20 ($29) for each leftover month. Considering most iPhone users rock out at £30 and above, that's a solid 30 percent discount (or contract amnesty, however you wanna view it) for the impatient types. Palm Pixi Plus now free on AT&T
Wow, that didn't take long! A couple days ago, you were paying $50 to take this thing home, but AT&T has moved perhaps quicker than any carrier in memory to adjust pricing on the Pixi Plus down to a more reasonable $0 -- on contract after rebates, of course. The only catch appears to be that you'll have to sign up for a data plan of at least $15, which corresponds to the carrier's recently-introduced DataPlus package that includes 200MB per month with overage of $15 per additional 200MB. That might seem low for your average power user on your average smartphone -- but this is a Pixi Plus we're talking about here.

O2 UK details early upgrade options for iPhone 4
Following up on a Monday announcement, O2 UK has disclosed the specifics of its upgrade deal for people switching to the iPhone 4 while still under contract. Most people will be forced to pay a special penalty fee, only available between June 24th and July 24th. This will involve a £20 charge for each month remaining in a contract.

Samsung jabs iPhone's Retina Display, says AMOLED wins
Samsung joined in the attacks on the iPhone 4's Retina Display with a retort in the Korean media. A spokesperson for Samsung argued that quadrupling the resolution actually had little impact on clarity, at most three to five percent, and that that it would allegedly hike the battery drain by as much as 30 percent. AMOLED is purportedly better as it doesn't need a backlight and makes up for any resolution loss in other ways, such as higher contrast with true black, more accurate colors and no limits on viewing angles.

T-Mobile Garminfone now on sale, price still boggles the mind
As promised, T-Mobile has brought the Garminfone to retail today for $199 after $50 rebate on a new two-year contract, calling into question the viability of selling a nav-centric Android device with an HVGA display, 3 megapixel camera, and no 3.5mm headphone jack for $250 out of pocket in the store. Hoo boy. This is a tough one, isn't it? In our years at Engadget, we've rarely seen such deafening debate and adulation for a pair of devices. In one corner we have the iPhone 4, coming off a few relatively easy rounds atop the smartphone mind share heap. ESPN and StubHub have teamed up to introduce a new ticket purchasing service for mobile devices. Starting today, the StubHub Mobile Ticketing Center will be available through both the ESPN ScoreCenter application for the iPhone, and the ESPN mobile website. Links to the ticketing center will be placed across ESPN's mobile properties, directing fans to the appropriate event, where tickets can be sorted by price or quantity. Marware announces 14 cases for iPhone 4, to ship June 24
Cases for the new iPhone are being rapidly announced following Apple's launch of the iPhone 4 at WWDC. On Wednesday, Marware announced 14 cases across four lines for the iPhone 4. The cases are divided among four lines -- Marware calls them families -- The hard shell family has polycarbonate cases, the leather family is aptly named for its use of leather in its cases, the women's leather family features pocket, purse and wrist cases and the soft family features a pair of soft cases.

Adobe promises fix for Flash vulnerability by tomorrow, Reader and Acrobat fix on June 29th
Well, it looks like Adobe isn't wasting much time in fixing that "critical" Flash vulnerability that could allow remote hijacking of a user's computer, but it's a slightly different story when it comes to patching Adobe Acrobat and Reader. According to Adobe, the Flash fix will be rolled out by tomorrow at the latest, but it says the fix for Reader and Acrobat won't be available until June 29th. Somewhat curiously, Adobe says it had considered rushing out a "one-off 0-day" fix for Reader and Acrobat as soon as possible, but says that would have caused too much "churn and patch management overhead on our users" considering there's already a regular

Tweetie dev promises new Mac, iPad clients
Tweetie 2.0 for the Mac is coming, says Loren Brichter, the developer of the first app. Tweetie 1.x is a popular desktop Twitter client, but work on the follow-up was delayed when Brichter's company, atebits, was bought out by Twitter itself, ultimately resulting in the Tweetie iPhone app becoming Twitter for iPhone. The Tweetie 2.0 Mac project should resume within a few weeks, says Brichter.

News: Best Buy, Radio Shack to offer iPhone 4 at launch
Both Best Buy and Radio Shack will offer the iPhone 4 on launch day, according to a new report and a series of Twitter updates, respectively. US PlayStation 3 gets four 3D titles starting tomorrow

Sprint faces ill-timed New York City-wide voice outage
Sprint today suffered a critical setback today as the carrier's CDMA network appeared to be suffering an outage through most or all of New York City. Data over 3G and 4G still appears to be working. The carrier in a statement said that one of its voice over IP switches encountered an "equipment failure" that rerouted voice traffic the wrong way after an attempted repair, creating congestion on the whole area network.

Orb Networks has launched a new version of Orb Live, bringing the app to the iPad. Users can stream music, photos and video hosted on a remote computer by means of a Wi-Fi, EDGE or 3G connection. Hawaiian volcano in sped up, thermal video: pretty intense
The United States Geological Survey's thermal camera recently captured some wild stuff over at the Kilauea volcanic caldera in Hawaii. My new EyeTV set-up, and why Comcast's digital transition is a pain

Apple's iPhone 4 Retina Display claims "exaggeration?"
Apple's claims behind the iPhone 4's Retina Display aren't completely true, display research veteran Raymond Soneira claimed today. While Apple claims that 300 pixels per inch (PPI) is the limit of the human retina and that the iPhone 4's 326PPI easily exceeds it, the DisplayMate president notes that the resolution would need to reach 477PPI for the pixels to truly be 'invisible' to a healthy human eye. Apple's claims don't become completely true until about 1.5 feet from the LCD.

Fast PDF brings iBooks functionality to PDF files

Sprint voice service down in New York City
We certainly don't want to point the finger at a wildly-successful EVO 4G launch just yet, but it seems that Sprint's voice service is down in New York City (data is still working, for what it's worth). This is happening consistently for three of us here in the city with EVOs on hand, so it certainly seems like a real problem. AdMob CEO responds to Apple's new advertising rules: 'not in the best interests of users or developers'
We had a pretty good idea what Google and its AdMob division would think of Apple's new rules on outside advertising companies collecting analytics, but AdMob CEO Omar Hamoui has now spelled it out himself. MSI replacing BIOS with UEFI firmware interface sometime this year?
The United EFI Forum is a trade group that includes Microsoft, Apple, Intel, and ARM. The goal? To develop and implement UEFI (United Extensible Firmware Interface). The specification replaces BIOS as the software interface between your computer's hardware and OS, doing away with several limitations of the BIOS firmware interface in the process. Unlike the old, dependable BIOS, however, UEFI comes with a flashy-mouse driven interface; and instead of being written in assembly, it's written in C -- which might mean that it needs more resources, but it's also a lot more flexible. AdMob: new iPhone ad rules hurt competition
AdMob founder Omar Hamoui today responded to Apple's updated iOS ad rules with a complaint that Apple was engaging in anti-competitive practices. The executive of the now Google-owned advertiser claimed that it could reduce the revenue for "tens of thousands" of app developers by limiting what AdMob could do for ads and would restrict app writers' choices for advertisers. Evizone debuts server communications service for Mac users
Evizone has launched a new self-titled communications service, designed to enable private e-mail conversations between individuals or workgroups. Evizone provides its own encryption key, which guards messages and documents stored on the companyís server. Wann kommt Google Maps Navigation für iOS? Android-Version jetzt in Europa verfügbar
Google hat sein Angebot für Mobilgeräte in Deutschland um zwei neue Features erweitert.
Die Möglichkeit, Googles Mobile App jetzt auch per deutscher Spracheingabe mit Sucheingaben und Fragen zu bombardieren, haben wir bereits auf dem iPhone-Ticker im Video demonstriert.
Die Google Mobile App ist kostenlos im App Store erhältlich und läuft neben dem iPhone auch auf dem iPod touch und dem iPad.

Wir haben bei den drei grossen Mobilfunkanbieter der Schweiz (Swisscom, Orange und Sunrise) angefragt, wie ihre Pläne betreffend dem Apple iPhone 4 — welches am Montag Abend vorgestellt wurde — aussehen. Die aktuelle Lage bei der Swisscom und bei Sunrise haben wir bereits in Artikeln erläutert.
Nun haben wir auch von Orange eine Stellungsname erhalten und auch diese gibt vorerst keine grossen Überraschungen preis: «Orange wird das iPhone 4 in der Schweiz in den kommenden Wochen lancieren. Weitere Informationen zu den Preisen und Preisplänen finden sich in Kürze unter orange.ch und in den Orange Verkaufsstellen.»
Bereits seit Dienstag steht im Orange-Shop, in dem das neue iPhone 4 bereits gelistet wird, dass das iPhone am 31. Juli erhältlich sein wird. Diese Angabe ist jedoch — nicht zuletzt auch aufgrund der obigen Orange-Stellungsname — mit Vorsicht zu geniessen, ist aber natürlich durchaus ein möglicher Lancierungstermin.

3M shows first USB 3.0-powered desktop display
3M at an event today showed the first example of a USB 3.0-based display. The 18.5-inch LCD is powered entirely by the bus, albeit over two ports, but should have much better refresh rates for video and other visually intensive tasks through the roughly 10 times larger, 5Gbps bandwidth versus USB 2.0's 480Mbps. The panel uses just 8W of power, or about half of what a similarly sized LCD would need.

Microsoft says Office for Mac 2011 will be 32-bit only
On the heels of releasing security updates for previous versions of Office, Microsoft on its blog Tuesday said that the 2011 version of the Office for Mac suite will be 32-bit only. The focus of development has been on improving compatibility between Mac and Windows platforms, according to product unit manager Jake Hoelter, and so Office has not been completely transitioned over to Cocoa. Unless the entire suite is written in Cocoa, it cannot take advantage of 64-bit processing.

Samsung shows new 3D, pico projectors in US
Samsung showed its upcoming A800 3D home projector and SP-H03 pico projector in the US for the first time. The 1080p A800 3D uses Samsung's Active 3D technology and can reproduce broadcast-standard colors. CPT starts a little transflective LCD fire under Pixel Qi
No, not literally. CPT is showing off some transflective display tech that's remarkably similar to Pixel Qi's, and the good news is that CPT is actually a display manufacturer. Pixel Qi's tech seems more advanced, with 5X power savings with the backlight off, versus CPT's 2X, but if CPT can get this 10.1-inch, 1366 x 768 panel onto the market soon for a good price, we think they could find some takers. Check out a hands-on video after the break. Interestingly, Netbook News says text is a bit less clear when the backlight is off, so perhaps Pixel Qi doesn't have so much to worry about though of course they'd have a lot less to worry about if one of the devices using their tech started shipping!

Apple kündigt Xcode 4 an
Apple kündigte im Rahmen der WWDC vor wenigen Stunden die baldige Veröffentlichung von Xcode 4 an. Da sich das Entwicklertool noch in der Betaphase befindet, steht es momentan nur den Besuchern der WWDC zur Verfügung. Xcode 4 soll den Entwicklern vor allem die Arbeit mit Code erleichtern und so für einen besseren Arbeitsablauf sorgen. Zusätzlich soll der Interface-Builder nun in das Programm integriert werden, anstatt weiter separat angeboten zu werden. Genauere Seednotes sind bislang noch nicht bekannt, sicher ist jedoch, dass Xcode 4 mindestens Mac OS X 10.6.3 benötigt.

Innovativ? Das iPad im iBook
Auf was für Ideen manche kommen. Wobei die Umsetzung schon beeindruckend ist. Ach ja, um was geht es hier eigentlich?
Ein bastelwütiger Japaner hat sein iPad in das Gehäuse eines alten iBook (Clamshell) verpflanzt. Es dient da unter anderem als Displayersatz. Zusätzlich wurde auch noch eine Alu-Tastatur von Apple verbaut die via iPad Camera Connection Kit am iPad angeschlossen ist. Sieht irgendwie lustig aus die ganze Sache. Ob das Sinn macht, diese Frage stellt sich hier wohl weniger.

Skype today clarified its interest in iPhone 4 and the possibility of video chat. A spokesman said Skype was curious about FaceTime and wanted to "see how this process unfolds" but made clear that the company didn't have any near-term intention of using Apple's open video call standard for Skype chats. Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock axe gets the fingers-on treatment (video)
We saw this flame-adorned guitar imitator in pictorial form just a couple of days ago, but now the GH: Warriors of Rock controller has been investigated in full detail and on video. Notable changes include an easier to hit star power button, a flanged strum bar, and the replacement of the touch pad on the neck with a battery compartment (which will store the Wii Remote on that console's version). Sprint "erred," Evo 4G launch sales much lower
Sprint in an update late Tuesday had to drastically scale back its claims of the Evo 4G breaking sales records. While it still had its strongest launch ever, the company said it "erred" and that sales were just equal to the combined sales of the Palm Pre and Samsung Instinct, not three times higher like it said on Monday. It didn't say how many of the Android phones actually sold, nor what had triggered the mistake.

New York Times for iPad update adds content

Specifically, the new build adds an Arts section and some videos. The Arts section has two "pages" worth of articles, so it's on par with the others. There are also five videos. Remember when Sprint said this:
"The total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined."

Texas Instruments hebt Quartalsprognose an

Breko: Telekom klagt gegen Entscheidung zu Schaltverteilerzugang
Laut einer Mitteilung des Bundesverbands Breitbandkommunikation (Breko) klagt die Deutsche Telekom gegen die am 5. Mai 2010 durch die Bundesnetzagentur ergangene Entgeltentscheidung zum Schaltverteilerzugang. Fujitsu's motion sensing laptop interface makes no sense (video)
We're not sure what Fujitsu is thinking here, but it has to stop. Get a load of its motion control interface running on a 15.6-inch laptop. Yes, a 15-inch laptop. We might be able to understand this if it was plugged into a big flat panel television or projector, but trying to manipulate those itty bitty controls from 10-feet away is, well, silly. The Core i3-350M-powered Fujitsu LifeBook AH700/5A does feature HDMI-out but you still have to place the laptop in front of you (and the TV) with the display popped open so that the camera can see your movements. On a positive note, it looks like a great way to develop your wax-on / wax-off ninja tuna skills.

Neue Entwicklerbuild von OS X 10.6.4 freigegeben
Mit der Nummer 10F566 dürfte Apple nun endgültig die letzte Vorab-Version des nächsten großen Updates für OS X Snow Leopard freigegeben haben. Die Bemerkungen zum Download offenbaren, dass es keine Neuerungen mehr gegeben haben soll, sondern lediglich einige Bugs entfernt worden sind. Wie auch schon bei der letzten Build fordert Apple die Entwickler dazu auf, besonderes Augenmerk auf die Bereiche Grafiktreiber, USB, SMB, Voice Over und VPN zu legen. Eine Veröffentlichung im Juni wird immer wahrscheinlicher.

Foxconn axes suicide compensation, relocating some production to Vietnam or Taiwan
At yesterday's annual shareholder meeting, Foxconn revealed that it'll no longer be compensating families of dead employees as a move to discourage further suicides. CEO Terry Gou reasoned by exhibiting evidence that showed the money -- an amount almost equivalent to ten years' worth of salary -- was a major motivation for the suicides. One such exhibit was a man's suicide letter that contained the following message for his parents:
"now I'm going to jump off Foxconn, really leaving now, but you don't have to be sad, because Foxconn will pay a bit of money, this is all your son can repay you now." Gou also blamed a possible "Werther Effect"

Apple verteilt iOS 4 GM, iTunes 9.2 beta und 10.6.4 10F566 an Entwickler
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute den Entwicklern den mittlerweile siebten Mac OS X 10.6.4 Build verteilt. Der neue Build trägt die Nummer 10F566 und ist gut 600 bis knapp 900 MB gross.
Nach wie vor werden in den Release-Notes keine bekannten Fehler gelistet und auch die Technologien, die die Entwickler beim Testen der OS-X-Vorabversion im speziellen beobachten sollten änderten sich nicht, es sind dies noch immer die Grafiktreiber, SMB, USB; Voice Over und VPN.
Bereits in der Nacht von Montag auf Dienstag hat Apple — wie an der WWDC-2010-Eröffnungskeynote angekündigt — den Gold-Master des neuen «iPhone OS 4» bzw. neu «iOS 4» an die Entwickler verteilt. «Gold Master» ist die Bezeichnung für die finale Version, welche später auch auf den Geräten installiert sein wird. Gleichzeitig hat Apple auch eine Beta-Version von iTunes 9.2 an die iPhone-Entwickler verteilt, diese neue iTunes-Version wird für iOS 4 benötigt.

Microsoft hat wie angekündigt an seinem Juni-Patchday zehn Updates herausgebracht, die 34 Sicherheitslücken schließen. PC-Markt: Analyst warnt vor geringem Wachstum im dritten Quartal
Chris Caso, Analyst von Susquehanna Financial, erwartet, dass sich das Wachstum der PC-Branche im dritten Quartal abschwächen wird. iOS 4 funktioniert mit allen kompatiblen Geräten - auch ohne Apple-Registrierung
Üblicherweise muss ein iPhone oder iPod touch bei Apple mit einer Gerätenummer registriert werden, damit noch nicht veröffentlichte Software darauf installiert werden kann. Wie Engadget jetzt jedoch festgestellt hat, ist es beim Golden Master des kommenden iOS 4 offenbar vollkommen egal, ob man bei Apple als Entwickler registriert ist oder nicht - so lange man ein kompatibles Gerät verwendet, installiert iTunes brav die neue Version. Der einzige Haken an der Sache: Der Download ist nur für Entwickler verfügbar, aber an dunklen Ecken im Internet wird die Software bereits munter verteilt.

Hersteller Microsoft veröffentlicht Aktualisierungen für seine Office-Versionen 2004 und 2008. HP will dank E-Mail ohne Treiber drucken
Rund um den Hardwaregiganten HP gibt es ein interessantes Gerücht, das von einer optionalen, treiberlosen Zukunft der HP-Drucker spricht. So plant das Unternehmen offenbar, seine Geräte mit einer E-Mail-Adresse auszustatten, um so ein vollkommen treiberloses Drucken zu ermöglichen. Die einzige logische Voraussetzung dafür wäre eine LAN- oder W-LAN-Verbindung zum Internet - interessant wird jedoch die Frage, wie HP effizient gegen Spam vorgehen möchte. Genau Details sind noch nicht bekannt, die NY Times geht jedoch von Preisen zwischen 100 und 400 US-Dollar für die ersten Geräte aus.

Bald 1 Million iPhones in der Schweiz
Cash führte bereits in der jüngsten Vergangenheit Statistiken über die Mögliche Anzahl iPhones in der Schweiz, so berichtete das Wirtschaftsmagazin im Dezember letzten Jahres, dass bis Ende 2009 in der Schweiz 600’000 iPhones im Umlauf sein sollen. Im April schätzte die Zeitung den Schweizer iPad-Absatz in diesem Jahr auf 100’000 Geräte. Im Zuge der Lancierung des neuen iPhone 4 rechnet cash nun vor, dass bis Ende 2010 das einmillionste Schweizer iPhone verkauft werden könnte. Demnach hat die Swisscom vom Schweizer iPhone-Start im Juli 2008 bis im Juni 2010 bisher sage und schreibe 550’000 iPhone 3G und iPhone 3GS abgesetzt, angeblich alleine im ersten Quartal dieses Jahres deren 85’000 Geräte. Gewinner der Apple Design Awards 2010
Viel Diskussion gab es im Vorfeld der diesjährigen WWDC um die Apple Design Awards. Ohne nachvollziehbaren Grund entschied sich Apple in diesem Jahr dafür, die Designpreise ausschließlich für iOS-Anwendungen ausgegeben. OS X-Programmentwickler fassten diese unnötige ‘Einsparung’ als Affront auf.

Panasonic announces 46-, 42-inch plasma 3DTVs for Japan
So far, Panasonic's well-reviewed (and naturally, 3D capable) 2010 V-series plasmas have been exclusively a 50-inch and above affair, but it's just announced 46- and 42-inch versions for Japan priced at ¥350,000 ($3,833) and ¥300,000 ($3,285), respectively. Sky-iPad-App kommt wohl diese Woche
Ursprünglich wollte der Bezahlsender Sky seine Sport-TV-App ja zum iPad-Deutschlandstart Ende Mai veröffentlichen, bislang ist jedoch immer noch nichts von der App zu sehen. Auf unsere Anfrage diesbezüglich bekamen wir bislang keine Antwort und auf der Webseite zum App hält sich der Sender mit der Formulierung "Bald im App Store erhältlich" nun alles offen.
Inzwischen wurde die App immerhin in der Münchener Diskothek P1 im Beisein Ex-Nationalkeeper Jens Lehmann öffentlich präsentiert und in diesem Zusammenhang auch von einer Verfügbarkeit zur Fußball WM (also bis Freitag) gesprochen. Video: Das iPad getestet von Kabel 1
Gestern Abend lief auf dem Sender Kabel 1 das K1 Magazin. In dieser Sendung wurde das neue iPad „getestet“. Nun ja, wirklich was neues war nicht zu erfahren. Das hatte ich aber auch nicht erwartet.
Wer diesen Test verpasst hat, kann ihn auf der Webseite von Kabel 1 sich noch mal ansehen. Aber aufgepasst, das geht nicht mit dem iPad selbst, denn das Video innerhalb der Webseite baut auf Flash auf.
Kleiner Tip am Rande: Der Bericht um das iPad fängt erst nach ca. 29:30 Minuten an. Ein wenig blöd ist auch die immer wieder auftauchende Werbung. Nun ja, irgendwie müssen die ja ihr Geld verdienen.

iPhone 4 at Best Buy for launch, at least 45 devices per store?
The iPhone 4 at Best Buy on launch day? It'd be no surprise, really -- after all, the retail giant had both the iPhone 3GS and iPad right from the get-go. We just got word from one of our trusted sources that Best Buy will indeed have the newfangled phone at launch, and even better, we've got some details on the inventory. A minimum of 30 units for the 32GB device and 15 of the 16GB will apparently be available at each store, and employee purchases are banned at launch. We can't say for sure without more paperwork, but this source has been pretty reliable before -- if nothing else, it should give you a decent idea just how early you should be preparing to wait in line.

Hulu for iPad, Xbox could be ready in two months
Hulu's rumored paid subscription service should be ready considerably sooner than thought, a pair of sources claimed Tuesday night. The TV streaming service should be ready within the "next month or two" and at some point should involve the iPad and Xbox 360. Rates weren't discussed, but the Reuters contacts echoed views that the free web-based service would still offer newer shows while the paid version would allow for older shows and other, unspecified content.

Sony: PSP Go was an experiment in gaming trends
The PSP Go was an experiment to see where the mobile gaming industry was going, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe head Andrew House claimed on Tuesday. He justified the handheld to MCV as a way to "learn more about what the consumer wanted" rather than as a replacement for the original model.
