RIM beats Apple as fastest-growing company
Research in Motion triggered a surprise in business today when it topped the list of the 100 fastest-growing companies on Earth. The originator of the BlackBerry outpaced others based both on its sheer revenue, which topped $11 billion in the past 12 months, as well as the balance of its growth: revenue grew 77 percent in the past three years, and its earnings per share grew 84 percent. Exploding iPhones are "isolated cases", Apple tells EU
Apple has responded to the European Commission’s enquiry concerning widely reported cases of exploding iPhones, saying these are “isolated incidents”.
Officials in Brussels this morning confirmed Apple to be investigating possible causes for these few incidents in which the iPhone screen reportedly spontaneously shattered. Meanwhile the company insists there’s no general problems with its product, said a commission spokeswoman, Helen Kearns.
"At the end of last week, we asked Apple and the member states where the incidents occurred to provide us with information on the matter," commission spokesperson Ton Van Lierop, currently charged with the industry and enterpris

Apple grabs one-third of US WiFi traffic
When it comes to active use of wireless networks, Apple’s devices are the fastest-growing clients, according to cloud-based wireless networking company, Meraki.
The company released the first-ever Meraki Wireless Census today, and the results reveal bold increases in the number of wireless-capable devices in use in North America, and even larger increases in the number of Apple devices and handhelds being used.
The number of Apple devices observed, including laptops, iPhones and iPods, grew by an impressive 221%. Apple devices now represent 32% of all the devices seen by this set of Meraki networks in North America, compared to just 14% in 2008.

Apple to release six inch iPod/tablet at September event?
Would you consider a 6-inch iPod touch to be a tablet?
Businessweek spoke to Richard Doherty, a director at market researcher Envisioneering Group on Apple's upcoming Tablet(s):
"There's no hotter topic [than tablets] in Asia right now," Apple has developed prototypes of two different tablet machines—one that resembles a large-sized iPod and boasts a 6-inch screen, and another that features a larger display. Apple may launch one or both devices as early as September, Doherty says. A decision on whether and when Apple takes the tablet plunge lies with Apple CEO Steve Jobs, Doherty says.

Apple iPhone surpasses Blackberry in Europe to become #2 smartphone vendor
While still trailing significantly behind Nokia, Apple has passed RIM's Blackberry to become the number two smartphone vendor in Europe, according to estimates made by Canalys. The market share increase is staggering (over 1000% growth)!
Other interesting stats: Apple's iPhoneOS accounts for 13.7% of global handsets. In the US, the iPhone is 23.3% of smartphones (compared to Blackberry with over 50%). In Asia, Sharp and Fujitsu trail Nokia who has over 50% of the market.

iTunes get's 25% of music marketshare, but*...
NPD came out with widely quoted numbers today which state that iTunes is responsible for 25% of music sales. While this is great news for Apple, it is only part of the picture. Most of Apple's sales are singles in the $.99 range while most traditional sales are full CDs which are more than ten times the cost. We're sure all of the intricacies of the data will be poured over in detail at next month's iPod/Music event, rather than Apple just throwing up a "We own 25% bitches" logos everywhere.

North Koreans love their spotty cellphone service
It's been nary a year since the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (aka "the North") got its very own 3G network, and now the Daily NK is reporting that -- no surprise -- cellphone use has taken the capital by storm. "Demand for mobile phones has been increasing" said one source. "Almost 30 percent of Pyongyang citizens seem to be using them." SecuritySpy 2.0 adds OpenGL, expands support
Ben Software has released v2.0 of its surveillance utility, SecuritySpy. The application is used to manage surveillance cameras, and catalog recorded security footage. The latest version includes support for audio recording from Axis and Panasonic network cameras, along with Axis video servers. New Maemo 5 screen shows fascinating, unique array of settings
Nokia may have shot down rumors that it was planning to completely replace its Symbian OS with Maemo, but that hasn't taken all the shine off the mobile OS, and a new, lone screenshot has now surfaced to further stoke those flames of anticipation (it's okay, you can admit it). PSP Go to get mobile-sized games, iPhone ports

Sony announces three new PSP-3000 colors for Europe
Sure, Sony's had plenty of big announcements at Gamescon today, but fans of lowered expectations aren't out of luck either, as the company's once again gone back to the paint shop and brought out three new colors for the still-sticking-around PSP-3000. Those include the all new "turquoise blue" and "blossom pink" colors, the former of which will come bundled with LittleBigPlanet, as well as the "lilac purple" model that's already made an appearance in the US (which'll also get the same Hannah Montanna Entertainment Pack). Sony finally hacks $100 from PlayStation 3 price, starting today
After begging, pleading and imploring Sony for months on end to lower the barrier to entry on its PlayStation 3 console, the company has at long last relented. Starting today (supposedly, anyway), all existing PS3 consoles will retail for $100 less than they did yesterday, though it looks as if most e-tailers have yet to ratchet their tags down to reflect the change.

Sony announces PS3 firmware 3.0, European PlayStation Video Store, Digital Reader comics viewer
Sony just announced a bunch of tweaks and additions to the PS3, PSP, and PlayStation Network at GamesCom, chief among them the new PS3 firmware 3.0. The new code features animated themes with avatars, a new status indicator, a modified friends list, assorted interface changes, tweaks to trophies, and a What's New section that replaces the Information Board. Sony's also bringing the PlayStation Video store to the UK, France, Germany and Spain in November, with more planned expansion in 2010 -- customers will be able to rent and buy films in SD and HD, and while it'll open with just movies, other content will be added as time goes on. Sony unveils slimmer PS3: $300, lands in September
Hardly a surprise, but Sony got on stage today at GamesCom and confirmed what we've all knew deep down in our hearts: the new, slimmer PS3 is really real. It'll be out in the first week of September, and retail for $300 (or 300 Euro). iTunes get's 25% of music marketshare, but*...
NPD came out with widely quoted numbers today which state that iTunes is responsible for 25% of music sales. While this is great news for Apple, it is only part of the picture. Most of Apple's sales are singles in the $.99 range while most traditional sales are full CDs which are more than ten times the cost. We're sure all of the intricacies of the data will be poured over in detail at next month's iPod/Music event, rather than Apple just throwing up a "We own 25% bitches" logos everywhere.

Fortune names RIM fastest growing company... in the world
It shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that RIM is doing pretty well even in the face of an economic downturn, but it looks like it's been doing really well -- at least according to Fortune, which has just named the Canadian company the fastest growing firm in the world. That's apparently based on a combination of profits, turnover, and investment return over three years which, in RIM's case, translates an 84% growth in profits in the past three years, a 77% growth in revenue, and a total return of 45%. It's also actually the first time RIM has made the list, although that's at least partly due to the fact that Fortune didn't include non-US firms last time around.

Analyst: Apple, Palm, RIM to lead in smartphones
Three American firms are ultimately going to take control of the smartphone business, RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky said today in a research note. He believes that Apple, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion and eventually Palm are all "positioned for leadership" and should command the smartphone market when it reaches 35 percent of all phones, or over 500 million smartphones, by 2012.

Apple iPhone surpasses Blackberry in Europe to become #2 smartphone vendor
While still trailing significantly behind Nokia, Apple has passed RIM's Blackberry to become the number two smartphone vendor in Europe, according to estimates made by Canalys. The market share increase is staggering (over 1000% growth)!
Other interesting stats: Apple's iPhoneOS accounts for 13.7% of global handsets. In the US, the iPhone is 23.3% of smartphones (compared to Blackberry with over 50%). In Asia, Sharp and Fujitsu trail Nokia who has over 50% of the market.

Businessweek spoke to Richard Doherty, a director at market researcher Envisioneering Group on Apple's upcoming Tablet(s)
"There's no hotter topic [than tablets] in Asia right now," says Richard Doherty, a director at market researcher Envisioneering Group, who says Apple has developed prototypes of two different tablet machines—one that resembles a large-sized iPod and boasts a 6-inch screen, and another that features a larger display. When it comes to active use of wireless networks, Apple’s devices are the fastest-growing clients, according to cloud-based wireless networking company, Meraki.
The company released the first-ever Meraki Wireless Census today, and the results reveal bold increases in the number of wireless-capable devices in use in North America, and even larger increases in the number of Apple devices and handhelds being used.
The number of Apple devices observed, including laptops, iPhones and iPods, grew by an impressive 221%. Apple devices now represent 32% of all the devices seen by this set of Meraki networks in North America, compared to just 14% in 2008.

It could also be a perfect timing for Apple to announce the new fully remasterized albums from "The Beatles". Microsoft wurde in den USA gerichtlich untersagt, weiterhin Microsoft Word mit XML-Unterstützung zu verkaufen. Auslöser ist ein Patentrechtsstreit mit dem kleinen kanadischen Unternehmen i4i. Dieses hatte im Mai erfolgreich gegen Microsoft geklagt, weil Microsoft mit der XML-, DOCX- und DOCM-Unterstützung das US-Patent 5.787.499 verletzt. Die DictaNet Software AG gibt die Verfügbarkeit von DictaNet Mobile for iPhone 1.52 bekannt. Damit können Diktate jetzt direkt aus der App via "ra e post" versendet werden. Wer noch kein ra e Kunde ist, kann sich unter www.ra-e.de registrieren. Die Nutzung ist bis 2010 kostenlos und soll dann 1 Cent pro angefangenes Megabyte kosten. Als Zusatzoption kann auch die Spracherkennungslösung "Dragon für DictaNet" (derzeit aktuelle Version 10) genutzt werden. Hierbei entstehen allerdings zusätzliche Kaufkosten für das Modul. Diktate, die mit Spracherkennung erstellt wurden, werden als Sprach- und Textdatei verschickt, so dass der Empfänger die in Text umgesetzte Datei gleichzeitig mithören und dann entsprechend korrigieren kann. Die Erkennungsrate beginnt bei ca. 96% an und kann lt. DictaNet durch Training und Korrektur auf 99-100% gesteigert werden. Spiele für Clickwheel-iPods vor dem Aus?
Noch bis Jahresbeginn konnten wir regelmäßig über neue Spiele-Neuerscheinungen für iPods mit Clickwheel berichten, etwa alle vier oder fünf Wochen fand ein neuer Titel den Weg in die Abteilung Clickwheel-Spiele im iTunes Store. Seit Februar herrscht hier allerdings tote Hose: Seit der Veröffentlichung von Scrabble fand kein neues Spiel mehr den Weg auf die iPod-Modelle Nano, Classic oder 5G.
Für uns sieht es momentan ganz danach aus, als hätten die Hersteller das Interesse an dieser Plattform verloren. Die Verkaufszahlen waren im Vergleich mit dem Absatz von Spielen für iPod touch und iPhone sowieso gering, der Aufwand für die Portierung wurde wohl eher fürs Prestige als für den Geldbeutel betrieben.
Mit dem App Store bietet sich den Herstellern jetzt ein unvorstellbar großer und dazu noch stetig wachsender Markt. Von daher wundert es nicht, wenn alle Energie h

Franzosen berichten von plötzlich berstenden iPhone-Displays
Nach einem Bericht der französischen Tageszeitung "La Provence" wurde im südfranzösischen Städtchen Aix-en-Provence ein 18-Jähriger durch das berstende Display des iPhone 3GS seiner 17-jährigen Freundin verletzt. Die beiden Teenager hätten am Abend auf der Terrasse gesessen, als das ungefähr zwei Monate alte iPhone laut zu knistern anfing. Prognose zu Apples Verkaufszahlen im laufenden Quartal

Qik im App Store, aber anders als gedacht

The story started last week in the south of France when a local newspaper reported the case of a teenager injured by his iPhone, cut close to his eye. A similar case is reported couple of days later in Marseille. Lenovo teases IdeaCentre Q100 / Q110 nettops, D400 home server
There's not a lot to go on here, but Lenovo's official Twitter account posted pictures of two products that are purportedly being revealed in more detail later this week. The IdeaCentre Q100 / Q110 nettops are said to be "some of the thinnest nettops in the world," and while the teaser image is certainly a looker, for better and for worse we can already smell the Atom processor from here. Also on the menu is the IdeaCentre D400, the company's first home server. We Got Served did a little digging, and as it turns out, the D400 was released in Asia at the beginning of this month, with four hot swappable bays, four USB ports, and an eSATA port. It'd be nice to know when this week Lenovo was planning to lift the veil of secrecy, but at least we won't be worrying about it come Saturday.

Less than a month before the iPod touch camera debuts, iPhone becomes king of Flickr
All sorts of caveats apply here. All iPhones are counted as one model, while Canon's DSLRs are separated into different model categories. Flicker is focused in US, iPhone has Flickr upload apps, etc, etc. Still it is impressive that the iPhone is now the number one camera on Flickr. This has been in the works for awhile.
It is also destroying all of the other cameraphones, naturally. One has to wonder how a camera-focused iPod touch will do comparatively.

In response to a number of rumors allegedly originating with Swedish news outlets, Spotify has denied that its iPhone app has been rejected from the App Store, according to Macworld.co.uk. Separate rumors suggest the app did receive approval, although the developer has clarified that Apple has not yet responded with an official decision in either direction.

Less than a month before the iPod touch camera debuts, iPhone becomes king of Flickr
All sorts of caveats apply here. All iPhones are counted as one model, while Canon's DSLRs are separated into different model categories. Flicker is focused in US, iPhone has Flickr upload apps, etc, etc. Still it is impressive that the iPhone is now the number one camera on Flickr. This has been in the works for awhile.
It is also destroying all of the other cameraphones, naturally. One has to wonder how a camera-focused iPod touch will do comparatively.

Dell bringt iPhone-Konkurrenten heraus - in China
Es entbehrt nicht einer gewissen Tragik, dass Dell, deren Smartphone angeblich von US-Providern als zu langweilig abgelehnt wurde, es nun in China mit dem Einstieg in den Smartphone-Markt versucht. Für den PC-Hersteller dürften die Verhandlungen mit potentiellen chinesischen Partnern einfacher verlaufen als für Apple, schließlich hat Dell keine Ambitionen, einen eigenen App Store aufzubauen.
