Adobe says sorry for 'unacceptable' customer support
Following the fuss and bother of earlier this week, Adobe now appears to be making moves to get closer to its customers. Lambert Walsh , Adobe Vice President, Technical Services, has penned an open letter to Adobe’s customers in which he apologises for the company’s recent customer service issues and makes a commitment to address these snags.

Two-mic system detects fetal heart rate anomalies, prenatal beat sampling
Patel Institute of Engineering and Technology's A.K. Mittra and associates have devised a clever and inexpensive early warning detection system for monitoring the fetal heart rate of that bun months-long in the oven. With two microphones -- one placed on the pregnant soon-to-be mother's abdomen and one inside the bedroom -- hooked up to a nearby computer, the two audio feeds are used to estimate and subtract the ambient room noise for a better read on the baby's vitals just before the woman goes to bed. Converted to a wav file, if anomalies are detected it's immediately compressed to MP3 and sent to the doctor for further testing. Snow Leopard: Neue Standardnamen für Bildschirmfotos
Apples neuste Version des Betriebssystems glänzt weniger mit offensichtlichen Änderungen, dafür mit vielen kleinen, zum Teil unsichtbaren Neuerungen. Anwendern, die gerne Arbeitsabläufe dokumentieren, wird auffallen, dass Bildschirmfotos nun nicht mehr die sinnfreie Bezeichnung “Bild X” mit fortlaufender Nummerierung erhalten. Find my iPhone leads to capture of
We aren't surprised by this at all and expect to see more and more of it as GPS devices become more ubiquitous. Pittsburgh police last night nabbed a trio of iPhone robbers who were caught using the iPhone's "Find My iPhone" service.
The victim, who was not identified by police, said two men approached him at about 1 a.m. near the intersection of Amberson Avenue and Amberson Place. He told police the men demanded his wallet and asked for his PIN number for his credit cards; one of the men also showed what appeared to be a handgun. Analyst: "MacBook Air has some of the aesthetic qualities of the tablet"
CNET has an incredibly vague analyst quote mentioning that Apple's tablet resembles the MacBook Air. Brook Crothers says:
I will make an exception--which I almost never do--and not identify the analyst. He claims to have seen a prototype of the Apple tablet and would prefer not to be identified. (Yeah, I know, more than a few analysts claim they have seen the furtive device. But I will go out on a limb and say I trust him. Smartbook AG (the company) follows in Psion's footsteps, issues cease and desist letter to website using the term 'smartbook'
Looks like smartbooks really are the new netbooks, after all. Aptly exemplifying déjà vu, German company Smartbook AG has issued a cease-and-desist to Netbooknews.de, claiming it owns the trademark and copyright on the term "smartbook" and that its use on the news site is damaging to the company's reputation and credibility. The letter demands that within two weeks all instances of the word be stricken from both the German and English-language versions, despite the latter being hosted in the US, outside of German jurisdiction. Unsolicited laptops sent to state governments never get used, now under investigation
Tempting though it may be, shipments of HP and Compaq (another HP brand) laptops sent to various US state governments have been sent either back to the manufacturer or to local investigators with nary even a game of Spider Solitaire in its account logs. As it turns out, the three to five machines sent to each state -- West Virginia, Vermont, Wyoming, and Washington -- were never ordered, and in at least three of the cases were purchased with fraudulent credit cards of unknown origin. Even with the shipments apparently coming from HP directly, officials are playing it safe and working under the guise of the machines possibly having malicious code running through its circuitry. Microsoft new media chief warns TV against 'iTunes moment'
Former BBC iPlayer boss and now Microsoft UK’s MD consumer and online, Ashley Highfield has warned broadcasters they have two years to create viable digital businesses, or face an ‘iTunes moment’ in which they could hand over control of their businesses online to Apple.
Highfield warned that advertising spend will eventually migrate to online services such as Facebook, which will create heavy pressure on broadcasters. Rather than give Apple control, Highfield told attendees at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival to take action now.

Sony R&D explains some background on the PlayStation motion controller
Well, it's no GameGun, but we hear this "PlayStation motion controller" thing from Sony is going to be "kind of a big deal." The SCEA R&D team was kind enough to put together some behind the scenes footage detailing a bit of the genesis of the controller and some of its technical prowess, and according to Sony this should be just enough of a calculated tease to get us excited for TGS in late September. iPod-Internetradio und Docking-Station von AEG
iPod-Zubehör von AEG? Kein Scherz: Zur nächste Woche in Berlin beginnenden Unterhaltungselektronikmesse IFA werden ein Internetradio mit iPod-Dock sowie ein Lade- und Audio-Dock mit AEG-Logo vorgestellt.
Das Internetradio IR 4430 lässt sich wahlweise über Wi-Fi oder Ethernet einbinden. Die Sender werden nach Genre sortiert angezeigt und können in einer Favoritenliste abgelegt werden. Zusätzlich fungiert das IR 4430 als Lade- und Soundstation für den iPod und kann auch als Wecker eingesetzt werden.
Die Docking-Station ID 4216 gibt Audio und Video vom iPod über Cinch-Anschlüsse auf der Rückseite aus. Gedockte iPods werden zudem mit Ladestrom versorgt, die Bedienung erfolgt über eine mitgelieferte Fernbedienung.

Grado takes on the earbud with the GR8
After years of shunning that most common of headphone styles, the earbud, Grado has at last taken a break from its over-the-ear, vented diaphragm purism (if you don't count the China-built iGrado) and created an in-ear pair for the kiddies. The GR8 doesn't really look like anything special, but the couple of reviews that have trickled in sound promising. The headphones are being built in Japan, but have some proprietary Grado magic in there to at least make them interesting -- and it certainly should, at $300 a pop.

Malware detection in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
Recently, there have been Trojan horses and other malware that have cropped up for OS X, and while for the most part they have just been a source of frustration, they pose a security risk. Apple has put some effort into malware detection in Snow Leopard, and users should see some form of warning when they've encountered a program or installer that contains a virus, Trojan horse, or other malware.

A personal farewell. This is my final mac.column.ted column. It also represents the end of my formal association with MacFixIt. As many of you know, I founded this site back in 1996 and sold it to TechTracker in 2000. Over the ensuing years, I maintained my relationship with MacFixit, initially as editor and later as the author of this monthly column. (If you're really curious, you can read a more detailed history here.) Now, with the transition of ownership to CNET/CBS, MacFixIt is heading in new directions. Running OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard: Initial Impressions and Review
Take any used car and tune it up, put new tires and brake systems on it, and rebuild the engine and transmission. When you are done it will feel like a new car even though it looks the same. This is what Apple has done with Snow Leopard: Functionally, it is the same OS as we've all seen in Leopard besides a few new features, but under the hood things have been optimized to a great extent. We saw the top, we saw the poster, and now it looks like we've got more or less the whole deal: Canon's EOS 7D has been leaked in (most of) its gory detail. At the heart there's an 18 megapixel sensor and dual DIGIC 4 processors, which shoots stills at 8 FPS with ISO from 100 to 6400 and a special 12800 ISO mode. The 3-inch LCD has a 920,000 dot resolution, while the viewfinder offers 100% coverage and a built-in digital level. Naturally the camera picks up the HD movie capabilities of the 5D, but no word on how it might expand upon them just yet. Alt: Neue Retro-Spiele für das iPhone
Im Dutzend billiger, oder zumindest platzsparender: Es ist wirklich verblüffend, welche mehr oder weniger bekannten Spieletitel aus der Vergangenheit für das iPhone wiederaufbereitet werden. Gleichzeitig gibt es neue Spiele, die grafisch und spielerisch ganz klar in die Retro-Ecke passen.

Larger Snow Leopard soft keyboard makes tablet computing EZ
Let's not jump to any conclusions here. We'd just like to point out that with all of the Snow Leopard coverage, no one is mentioning the new Snow Leopard soft keyboard which didn't exist in Leopard in the same capacity. In Leopard and before, the soft keyboard was located in the International System pref and was very small (half-sized - See below). You could make it bigger but only one size.
The new keyboard is much (finger sized) bigger and is located in an input method (keyboard) system pref. You can now resize it as well to stretch all the way across the screen.
After playing with it for awhile, you'll probably see that it would make a great interface for another type of device. Instructions below

Medion's 24-inch X9613 multitouch all-in-one PC actually looks pretty hot
Medion has never really been our go-to manufacturer for new hotness, but we're really digging this new X9613 all-in-one model it's showing off. Even better than the sexy, the computer is fronting a 24-inch multitouch display, a miniature SideShow screen, a gloriously large physical volume knob, and a bunch of convenient media controls along the bottom. Internals aren't bad either, with a Core 2 Quad Q9000 processor and GeForce GT240M graphics. The price range, unfortunately, is rather steep at 1,499 to 1,900 Euro (about $2,142 to $2,714 US).
