iPod3,1: Die dritte iPod touch-Generation hinterlässt Spuren
Ebenso wie sich das iPhone 3GS als iPhone2,1 schon lange vor seiner Veröffentlichung in den Nutzungsstatistiken einiger iPhone-Applikationen zeigte, so taucht seit April 2009 auch ein iPod3,1 immer häufiger auf. Laut Pinch Media nutzen inzwischen wenige Dutzend unterschiedliche iPod3,1-Geräte rund zwei Dutzend verschiedene iPhone-Anwendungen, deren Nutzungsweise sich durch Pinch Analytics nachvollziehen lässt.

Sharp intros slate of new AQUOS LCD HDTVs, first LED models included
There are just two months to go before CEDIA kicks off in Atlanta, but Sharp's obviously not down with waiting 'til the Fall to introduce its latest gaggle of AQUOS HDTVs. Labels, Internet radio agree to royalty deal
Owners of Internet radio stations and music label groups struck a deal on Tuesday that should allow online outlets to continue streaming music. MacProxy 1.0 provides anonymous Internet surfing
Tidal Pool has released MacProxy 1.0, which forwards network settings to a proxy server, enabling users to hide their IP address and navigate the Internet anonymously. The software supports Safari, Firefox, Mail, iChat, FTP and Telnet, and as well as other applications which may not have internal proxy tools. It may not be the snazziest thing to ever leave the labs at Oregon Scientific, but it's still a new take on the average desktop weather station that Ma Earth would certainly appreciate. Problems with the 10.6 "Snow Leopard" up-to-date ordering page.
Apple has offered a upgrade to Snow Leopard for existing Leopard users for $30, and has offered the upgrade to owners of qualifying products (those purchased between June 8 and December 26 of 2009) for around $10. Sony unveils two new 1080p Handycams
Nothing too remarkable about Sony's latest HD camcorders, but the new 64GB HDR-CX520V and 32GB HDR-CX500V are solid updates nonetheless. Identical apart from the built-in storage, both feature an Exmor R CMOS sensor with BIONZ processing that should offer solid low-light performance and decent 12 megapixel stills, Optical SteadyShot with a new active mode and three-way shake cancellation, Face Touch autofocus that allows you to simply point at faces to prioritize focus in order, and, most notably, a 1080p/60 scaler, which'll upscale your footage to 60p when connected to a compatible HDTV. Not a bad piece of kit, but they'll cost ya: the HDR-CX500V will run $1,100 and the HDR-CX520V will be $1,300 when they arrive in September.

Owners of the iPhone 3GS should now be able to both unlock and jailbreak their devices, the unofficial iPhone Dev Team has announced. The group has released 3GS-ready versions of ultrasn0w and redsn0w, which respectively handle both halves of hacking an iPhone. The move was forced, the Dev Team says, by the announcement of purplera1n, which can only jailbreak a 3GS.

BlackBerry apps double to 2,000; RIM "happy"

PSP2 to be based on iPhone-esque PowerVR GPU, rival original Xbox in power?
If Sony's PSPgo was some halfhearted attempt to quell incessant PSP2 rumoring (and our favorite PSP2 mockup render, above), it certainly doesn't seem to have worked. Panasonic banks on robot drug dispensers
Panasonic isn't the first company to turn to robots as a means for dispensing drugs, but it looks like it's set to become one of the bigger players in the still fledgling field, with it announcing today that it's developing a robot that it hopes will rake it about 30 billion yen (or $315 million) by 2016. Unfortunately, Panasonic isn't quite ready to actually show off the robot just yet, but it says it could be making the rounds at some Japanese hospitals by next March, and head into the United States and Europe sometime after that. Qik coming to iPhone..maybe for reals this time
If you've been with us awhile, you know we're pretty huge fans of Qik. Qik is simply a video broadcasting app for mobile devices. The video is sent from the iPhone to Qik.com where it can then be embedded into anyone's website. It has been running on jailbroken iPhones for over a year but the want to be legit. Qik has been submitting like crazy to the App Store only to be turned away time after time. Digg founder, Kevin Rose stated it would be accepted last year but unfortunately it got turned down.
Now that the iPhone has a video API as well as some more CPU power under the hood, Qik is going to try to submit again. Although we're optimistic, we wouldn't bet on it getting accepted.

If you've been with us awhile, you know we're pretty huge fans of Qik. Qik is simply a video broadcasting app for mobile devices. It has been running on jailbroken iPhones for over a year. Qik has been submitting like crazy to the App Store only to be turned away time after time. Digg founder, Kevin Rose stated it would be accepted last year but unfortunately it got turned down.

Forscher der Carnegie Mellon University haben ein Verfahren entwickelt, um US-Sozialversicherungsnummern (SSN) vorauszusagen. Dafür haben sie SSNs von zwischen 1973 und 2003 verstorbenen Personen untersucht, um ein statistisches Muster bei der Vergabe zu erkennen. Die SSN wird in den USA nicht nur von der Sozialversicherung und im Gesundheitswesen genutzt, sondern auch etwa von Finanzbehörden und privaten Unternehmen. According to Digitimes, Foxlink is making micro-projectors for future Apple (,Samsung and Nokia) products:
International brand vendors, including Nokia, Samsung Electronics and Apple, reportedly all plan to launch handsets with built-in micro projectors by the end of this year, indicated the sources, adding that Foxlink is likely to benefit from the emerging trend due to its strong business relationships with Nokia and Apple.
Although the site doesn't specify whether the parts will go in to Apple's Mac or iPod/iPhone line, the inclusion of Nokia seems to indicate they are products for mobile phones. Therefore, one could speculate that these devices will be built into Apple's iPhone/iPod touch line.

Informatiker finden in England am schwersten einen Job
Für Informatikstudenten ist die Jobsuche in Großbritannien im Vergleich mit anderen Akademikern am härtesten. Creative finally reading first touch device
Creative's first touchscreen media device has been revealed today through an FCC filing. Just called the Zii, the player is only shown in outline but already reveals some of its key selling points. It's no secret that some of our US editors have been feeling a bit of tech-envy toward our cousins from the far East, who consider 7-inch PNDs commonplace. HTCs Gewinn geht weiter zurück
Nach einem 30-prozentigen Gewinneinbruch im ersten Fiskalquartal hat HTC auch im zweiten Vierteljahr 2009 mit sinkenden Erlösen zu kämpfen. Vorläufigen Zahlen (PDF) des taiwanischen Handyherstellers zufolge ging der Nettogewinn gegenüber dem Vorjahr um 1,9 Prozent auf 6,49 Milliarden Taiwan-Dollar (umgerechnet etwa 141 Millionen Euro) zurück. 256 GB SLC-based SSD in 2010
Currently, most SSD models are based on MLC memory chips offering higher storage capacity than SLC chips at the cost speed and 10x shorter lifetime. However, MLC chips are much cheaper to produce. Nevertheless, Intel did not drop the SLC channel yet, and is expecting to release a 128 GB SSD model based on this type of memory, and could release early 2010 an even larger unit offering 256 GB. The main problem will be the price, as SLC unit are currently around 13 Euro per GB, so 4 times more expensive than MLC-based GB.
Of course, such SLC SSDs would fit perfectly in high-performance servers, this is a niche market, but also a field were performance and reliability are necessary and often worth the cost. Intel could even strongly compete with other manufacturers currently sharing this niche market if the founder would release SLC-based SSDs with a SAS interface.

Intel Has High Expectations for Its Future Mobile Processors
If you read HardMac regularly you should know that Intel will soon entirely refresh (in depth) its architecture dedicated to mobile computing, and we suspect that Apple will adopt it early 2010 in order to benefit from the performance gain offered by the Nehalem. This will be a major step for Intel as the founder will include on the same die a CPU engraved at 32 nm and a 45 nm engraved integrated graphics and integrated memory controller:

Auch wenn es noch ein wenig zu früh ist, feiert Apple doch schon den ersten Geburtstag vom App Store. Ganz offiziell wurde er am 11. Juli 2008 eröffnet, aber ausgedehntes Reinfeiern ist ja auch nicht unbedingt schlecht. Ungerechtfertigt ist dies keinesfalls, sind doch nach nur neun Monaten schon eine Milliarde Downloads zu zählen gewesen. Diese dürften Apple geschätzte 20 bis 45 Millionen US-Dollar Umsatz beschert haben.

GSM Palm Pre makes exclusive first appearance on Movistar
There it is, the first official press shot (see that HSDPA icon?) of the GSM version of the Palm Pre. The "more information" link isn't working at the moment but it's clear that Movistar has exclusive rights to the Pre in Spain. Nächste iPod-Touch-Generation erhält möglicherweise eine Kamera
Wie TechCrunch unter Berufung auf Quellen in Asien berichtet, hat Apple Aufträge für Kamera-Module platziert, die für die nächste Generation des iPod Touch gedacht sind. Der Umfang der Aufträge sei so groß, dass Apple womöglich Kameras für alle iPod-Modelle mit Ausnahme des Shuffle plane, so die Quellen. Allerdings handele es sich um günstige Kamera-Module in einer Preislage von rund 10 Dollar.

EMC hat im Bieterwettstreit mit Netapp sein Kaufangebot für Data Domain erhöht. Statt 30 Dollar je Aktie in bar will der Storage-Anbieter nun 33,50 Dollar je Aktie bezahlen. Mit OpenTrust iPhones sicher(er) einbinden
Der Authentifizierungsspezialist OpenTrust bietet ab sofort auch "kompletten Support für mobile Authentifizierung für Smartphones einschließlich des iPhones an". Dies soll es OpenTrust-Anwendern gestatten, "digitale Identitäten in den modernsten Smartphones wie dem iPhone zu verwalten". Mobile Arbeitnehmer können ihr mit digitalen IDs ausgestattetes Smartphone nutzen, um sich unterwegs automatisch am Firmennetzwerk zu authentisieren. OpenTrust Mobile will damit aus z. B. iPhones "ein vertrauenswürdiges Gerät für vertrauenswürdige Nutzer" machen. Dabei können laut Anbieter verschiedene Möglichkeiten genutzt werden, "um Berechtigungsnachweise und Sicherheitsprofile in iPhones zu registrieren und zu verwalten, SMS-Benachrichtigung". OpenTrust Mobile ist derzeit mit den neuesten Apple OS, Blackberry OS und WindowsMobile OS kompatibel. Die Unterstützung von Android wird vorbereitet.

A reader drew our attention to a problem that he met on his Macbook pro 2009 equipped with a 500 GB hard drive running at 7200 rpm. This disk regularly ceases functioning (10 to 15 times per day), causing the appearance of the multicoloured wheel, and emits what one can qualify as a beep. A video posted on Youtube allows us to hear it (around the fourth second, it is not loud).

Creative Zii and Zii EGG touchscreen handhelds served up by FCC
Guess who's back? Creative. Hard to believe, we know, but the company we've all but forgotten looks ready to make a comeback in the portable audio / video game. Creative Labs Zii and Zii EGG just made their first appearance at the FCC. Can't say that we're too enthused by the "EGG" moniker but we're definitely liking the looks of that "HD Camera" module along the backside of these "MP4 players with touchscreens" and 802.11b/g WiFi. That "developer edition" is also a good sign that Creative is looking to make this a software platform a la the ol' iPod touch only with Creative's Zii system-on-chip architecture secret sauce. Jammie Thomas seeks reduction of $1.9m RIAA damages
Following an unsuccessful legal battle against the RIAA, Jammie Thomas-Rasset has asked a federal court for a new trial or a reduction of the $1.92 million in damages she was recently ordered to pay, according to CNET News. SIRIUS XM iPhone app reaches 1 million downloads
The SIRIUS XM iPhone application has been downloaded by more than 1 million users since its release on June 18th. A new lawsuit has targeted Apple, Sony and Nintendo, for allegedly infringing on patents involving technology used in the iPhone, Wii and PS2, among others. The plaintiff, Shared Memory Graphics LLC, holds U.S. Patent No. 5,712,664 that describes a "shared memory graphics accelerator system."

Ogg Theora, H.264 and the HTML 5 Browser Squabble
Pundits are roasting Apple over a scuffle raised by Mozilla and Opera to define the free Ogg Theora video codec as the official way to present video on the web in the new HTML 5 specification. The problem: HTML isn't supposed to define content codecs, and even if it were, Ogg Theora, commercially abandoned nearly a decade ago, doesn't have what it takes to deliver video on the increasingly mobile web.

Demand surges for Apple and Palm smartphones
As consumers plan to purchase more smartphones than ever, future demand for Palm and Apple devices has continued to surge, according to recent ChangeWave survey data.
