Target bows to Apple in Pearl Jam 'Backspacer' deal

Nokia N97 Mini press photo outed, existence still not official

The future Macbook Pro will run slower?
One starts to know a little more about the next processors for laptops based on the Nehalem architecture that Intel will launch at the very beginning of 2010 and that Apple will doubtless use for the next major revision of its laptops. They are known at Intel under their internal code name, Arrendale.
To start, we should, with the image of what has already happened with the Mac Pro at the time of passing to the Nehalem, expect a reduction in the frequency. The fastest Arrendale, will be the Core i7 620M. The base frequency of its two cores will be 2,66 GHz. However it will be possible to overclock automatically up to 3,33 GHz as long as the total thermal envelope does not exceed a threshold fixed in advance by Intel. The TDP of these processors will be of 35W, the usual maximum threshold for Apple and its MacBook Pro. The quality of the cooling of these processors will thus be more important than before. Letterbox: view Mail in widescreen mode
Apple's Mail email client is a great and widely used program that shows the mailboxes section to the left, with the message list and message viewer on top of each other to the right. While this layout works great for the most part, there are many people who might benefit from or desire to have the layout in column view.

Samsung P410M pocket projector hands-on
As we heard before, its 170 lumens is a bit brighter than the 151 lumens P400M predecessor, but otherwise the P410M is pretty much the same not-quite-pocket projector. The USB input is a nice touch, but the rep we spoke with didn't know what codecs were supported at this point. Unfortunately, we couldn't get a chance to see it in action, as the device suffered through some accident on the way to the event, but we did find out that it's due out for public consumption next week for around $699. iPods doing better at retail than predictions?
In spite of recent Piper Jaffray observations, iPod sales actually did better than expected in July -- at least at retail, according to FTN Equity Capital Markets analyst Bill Fearnley Jr.. Duo brings pen-based computing to almost any display
An intermediate step between Livescribe and a touchscreen, the Duo by KCI Communications lets you use a stylus on your standard desktop or laptop display. It works (on devices up to 17-inches) by using a base station to track the XY coordinates of the pen as it makes its way around the screen. Blu-ray to be on just 16% of PCs by 2013
Attempts by many Windows PC builders have pushed Blu-ray as a major feature of their systems have largely fallen flat, iSuppli said in a new study published today. The optical drives should only appear in about 3.9 percent of PCs this year but, even by 2013, aren't expected to occupy more than 16.3 percent of desktops and notebooks. Microsoft's CEDIA event September 9th to reveal what's new in Media Center
We had a good feeling that Microsoft might have a thing or two to announce arround Windows 7 Media Center at the upcoming CEDIA show in Atlanta this September, but now we can start the official countdown. The after-hours event at ESPN Zone will help kick off the show in Atlanta at 6:30pm -- the event is invite only, but don't worry, we'll be brining you the events live as they happen. Apple to keep, redesign plastic MacBooks?
Apple is in the midst of redesigning its plastic MacBook to cement its share at the lower end of the notebook spectrum, a source said today. A good text editor is a must for people who edit formatted text files such as plists, html, and other code files. Canon intros first high-speed scanners for Macs
Canon on Tuesday introduced two new high-speed business scanners that mark the company's first to be Mac-compatible. The two add to Canon's imageFORMULA DR series and include the DR-2510M and DR-2010M. Both have the TWAIN driver necessary for use with Macs, as well as Canon's CaptureOnTouch software that lets users quickly scan to e-mail, printers, shared folders or specific apps such as iPhoto.

The leaked photo of the Storm 2's internal board got our juices flowing -- and our curiosity piqued -- of course, but this latest set of photos really takes it up a notch. Google bastelt an Verbesserung der Bildersuche
Google hat jetzt weitere Verbesserungen an seiner Bildersuche vorgenommen. Als Ordnungskriterien lassen sich nun nicht mehr nur die vagen Größenbezeichnungen "beliebige Größe", "mittel" und "groß" auswählen, es stehen mehrere unterschiedliche Auflösungen (400 x 300, 640 x 480, 800 x 600 und 1024 x 768 Pixel) sowie sechs nach der Zahl der Megapixel der Bilder geordnete Filter zur Auswahl.

It's too bad Sony doesn't have a working prototype to show of its new Daily Edition Reader (pictured on the right), but we got to look at all three of the Readers up next to each other, and it paints quite the picture of familial unity. Nokia Booklet 3G to run $799?
Barely more than 24 hours after the Nokia stunner of the century -- the company's announcement of the Booklet 3G "mini laptop" -- we're starting to get some more details about the 10.1-incher. Netbook News is reporting an unnamed source that claims the netbook will run $799 -- certainly not a netbook price. The Booklet will boast a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530, and will reportedly boast a 120GB HDD, plus integrated 3G, a swappable SIM card, A-GPS, Bluetooth and WiFi. Distributed-Computing-Projekt soll GSM-Verschlüsselung knacken
Sicherheitsforscher Karsten Nohl will ein Distributed-Computing-Projekt starten, das die Verschlüsselung von GSM knackt. Dies sagte er auf einem Vortrag bei der niederländischen Konferenz "Hacking at Random". Dann wäre es möglich, Gespräche und Datentransfers über Mobilfunk zu entschlüsseln. It was but a few months ago that we were lusting after a svelte little fanless Snapdragon Eee PC running Android and being demo'd at Computex. Now, ASUS is letting us all down softly, saying that project has been put on the shelf -- presumably to make room for another string of cookie-cutter netbooks. Facebook developer slams App Store approvals
Facebook developer, Joe Hewitt, has joined the throng of developers hitting out at Apple’s App Store approvals systems, but unlike others is saying there should be no App approval at all.
Writing on his blog, he vented his frustration at the process, which has hampered the release of Facebook 3.0 for iPhone, which remains unapproved.

Keine iSync-Unterstützung für Palm-Geräte in Snow Leopard
Wie AppleInsider berichtet, hat Apple in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard die iSync-Unterstützung für Palm-Geräte eingestellt. Anwender mit Palm-Geräten müssen also auf Dritt-Hersteller-Lösungen setzen, wenn sie auch unter Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard nicht auf die iSync-Funktionalität verzichten wollen. Anwendung schaltet zwischen Snow Leopard 32- und 64-bit Kernel um
Der Programmierer Markus Winter aus Heidelberg hat sich gefragt, warum Apple mit seinem neuen Betriebssystem Mac OS X zwar den 64 bit-Modus vollständig unterstützt, aber trotzdem den Kernel des Systems standardmäßig im 32-bit Modus startet. Statt dem EFI die Auswahl zu überlassen, kann man den "Startup Mode Selector" einsetzen, der beim Start des Rechners dem Benutzer die Auswahl überlässt, den Kernel des Rechners im 64-bit oder im 32-bit Modus hochzufahren.

Mobile Commerce 2: Vor dem Durchbruch?
Die Managementberater von Mücke, Sturm und Company haben Tempo und Bedingungen des weiteren Wachstums beim "Mobile Commerce"-Markts untersucht. Durch die Massentauglichkeit von Smartphones und damit einhergehend vom mobilem Internet sei bereits heute das Fundament für den Durchbruch von mobile Shopping gelegt. Laut Studie könnte im Jahre 2014 mit einem Marktvolumen von 1,8 Milliarden weltweit gerechnet werden, wenn sich hierauf aufbauend der mobile Einkauf weiter etabliert. Hierfür müssten aber begünstigende Voraussetzungen geschaffen werden: Beispielsweise durch gemeinsame Initiativen von Banken, Einzelhandel, Mobilfunk-Providern und Smartphone-Herstellern.

SAP dementiert Medienberichte über erneute Verzögerung von Business ByDesign
SAP hat auf Anfrage von ZDNet.de aktuelle Medienberichte dementiert, denen zufolge es bei der Markteinführung der SaaS-Mittelstandslösung Business ByDesign erneut zu Verzögerungen kommt. Die Berichte hatten davon gesprochen, dass der breite Marktstart für das Mittelstandsprogramm ab der zweiten Jahreshälfte 2010 erfolgen soll. Bis dahin laufe der Rollout noch in einem kontrollierten Verfahren. Dabei würden in diesem Jahr nur rund 100 Kunden zugelassen, 2010 dann zunächst nur 300, erst Mitte des Jahres entfalle die Begrenzung. Damit verzögere die Einführung des für das weitere Wachstum wichtige Produkt erneut.

RIM, the company known for its Blackberry mobile phones, announced to have acquired Torch Mobile, a start-up specialized in internet-dedicated applications. RIM plans to take advantage of their expertise to improve its internet browser installed on Blackberries. Apple Store Hamburg öffnet an diesem Samstag
Der zweite deutsche Apple Retail Store öffnet am 29. August um 10 Uhr im Hamburger Alstertal-Einkaufszentrum (AEZ). Wir hatten den dortigen Standort bereits im April vermutet und dann Anfang Juni bestätigt. Das AEZ liegt nicht in der Hamburger Innenstadt, gilt aber als eines der exklusivsten Einkaufszentren in Europa.

DDR3-Preise auf Rekordhoch
In der ersten Hälfte des Jahres 2009 zeigte die Preisentwicklung für DDR3-Speicher einen erfreulichen Abwärtstrend. Im Juni erreichten die Preise der aktuellen RAM-Generation fast das Niveau von DDR2, wodurch die Attraktivität der dritten Generation von DDR-RAM weiter stieg. There isn't a lot to go by here, but if the Wall Street Journal's sources are to believed, recently-returned Apple CEO Steve Jobs is currently focusing the vast majority of his attention on the oft rumored tablet device, micromanaging every detail much in the way he did with the iPhone. The report also says that the tablet project has been twice killed by Jobs in recent years -- first time because of bad battery life, which we get, and second because of insufficient memory, which seems a little less believable. NPD expects PS3 sales to jump 40-60% post-price cut
It doesn't take a whole lot of analysis to figure out that a $100 price cut will result in a boost in sales, but market research group NPD seems to think that the PS3's new $299 price point could have a particularly big impact on Sony's numbers once next month's sales are tallied up. Nokia Booklet 3G is really real, as seen on camera
Not that we thought it was a fabrication this morning, but Reuters has managed to snap a few pictures of the Nokia Booklet 3G "mini laptop" to assure us that there is indeed at least one physical unit in existence, located at the company's Helsinki headquarters. As seen in another photo, the model sports the blue lid, and just so you're absolutely clear how a 10.1-inch netbook sizes up to an actual phone, we've got a side-by-side with an E71. Looks like we'll have to wait until Nokia World to figure out what Intel Atom processor they've got inside that makes sense to pair with a HDMI output, however.

Creative Zii EGG orders being processed, will ship by the end of the month
We still don't know what to make of Creative's Zii EGG and "stem cell computing" but it looks like we'll be getting our first answers relatively soon -- pre-order customers are being charged and told units will ship by the end of the month. As an added bonus, Creative is apparently including a free HD-out cable in these early deliveries, but we don't know if these are being pre-loaded with Android or that Plazma OS.
