What CTA's iPhone steering wheel lacks in style, it also lacks in convenience
For many users, any game that ends up installed on an iPhone is something of an after-thought: It sits there, quietly, waiting for a spare moment in the dentist's waiting room or on the train. mProjector 4 features 50 sample app codes
Screentime Media has released v4 of its widget development utility, mProjector. UBS: 8GB iPhone 3GS could undo Apple profits
A number of positives and negatives are likely to affect Apple's gross profits in the near future, notes UBS analyst Maynard Um. Official Windows 7 upgrade chart is ridiculous
This is seriously Microsoft's Windows 7 upgrade chart, and it's ridiculous. It manages to highlight the insanity of shipping multiple OS versions while totally minimizing the good news: most Vista users will be able to upgrade in place to the corresponding 32- or 64-bit version of 7. That should cover the vast majority of people running Vista, but if you're still on XP or you're trying to do anything out of the ordinary you'd better get ready for some pain: all those ominous blue boxes require you to back up, wipe your drive, and reinstall a totally clean copy of 7. Apple patent application promises means to detect gadget abuse
Apple's already put liquid submersion sensors in some of its recent products, but a recent patent application seems to suggest that it has some considerably grander plans in mind to detect and prevent gadget abuse. Described as a "Consumer Abuse Detection System and Method," the new system would apparently make use of a whole range of sensors to various issues that might void the warranty of the device, like exposure to extreme cold or heat, drops, or submersion in liquid. What's more, unlike the current liquid sensors that simply change color when something bad happens, the new system would apparently store the damage digitally in memory which, presumably, wouldn't be as susceptible to damage as the device itself

Phil Schiller says Apple didn't censor a dictionary
Yesterday's story about Apple censoring the Ninjawords dictionary seems to have made some waves in Cupertino -- none other than Phil Schiller followed up with Daring Fireball's John Gruber to provide Apple's perspective on the situation. Rumored Micro Four Thirds Panasonic GF1 gets pictured
Well, this one's a bit out of the blue, but a member of the Xitek.com forums has produced this image of a hereto unheard of Micro Four Thirds Panasonic Lumix GF1 that's purported to come from an internal Panasonic PDF. A second image (after the break, and full size at the link below), also reveals a few more interesting details, like a port below the hotshoe that would presumably be used for a detachable EVF, and a built-in pop-up flash. TomTom for iPhone £99 UK price revealed in retail blunder
A UK retailer has revealed the local price for the long-awaited TomTom for iPhone navigation system - £99 ($168) excluding UK sales tax.
TomTom hasn’t yet revealed pricing for the system, promising only to ship the iPhone satnav “this summer” - and there’s scant weeks until summer’s end.
UK retailer Handtec prematurely listed the system on its site a month ago and has yet to remove it - for whatever that's worth. The system includes a windscreen mount, iPhone charger, amplified speakers, a hands-free kit and a GPS dongle.

Pressure-sensitive keyboard lets you express fury, tenderness
Microsoft's hardware division has always pushed the envelope, and its latest prototype is no exception: this pressure-sensitive keyboard looks exactly like a normal 'board, but each key can register up to eight levels of pressure, opening up all kinds of interesting possibilities. Sure, there's a gaming demo, where pushing buttons harder makes you run faster or jump higher, but that's sort of old hat -- we're super intrigued by the typing corrector, which uses the pressure difference between keys you mean to type and keys you accidentally graze to fix your mistakes. Dell goes pro with U2410 IPS monitor for Japan

Retro-Feeling: Pac-Man Remix und Q*Bert
Q*Bert stammt als Computerspiel ursprünglich aus dem Jahr 1982 und hat nun seinen Weg aufs iPhone gefunden. Touchable Holography uses Wiimotes to add touch to holograms
Researchers from The University of Tokyo have demoed a touchable hologram at Siggraph 2009. The project, called Touchable Holography, involves the use of Wiimotes placed above the display to track hand motion, and an airborne ultrasound tactile display created in the university's lab to create the sensation of touch. The result is a holographic image that produces tactile feedback without any actual touching, and without degrading the image itself. iPhone and Wiimote brought together by Bluetooth
It's been a long time going, but it looks like the invisible divide between the iPhone and the Wii remote has finally been bridged through the magic of Bluetooth. That was apparently made possible thanks to the portable Bluetooth stack from the BTStack project, which got paired with some custom OpenGL-ES code to allow the Wiimote to control a virtual representation of itself on the iPhone. Vice President Biden announces $2.4 billion in battery-related grants
It hasn't been much of a secret that the US government was planning to dole out a couple of billion in battery-related grants to automakers this week, but we only got the details on who gets what today when Vice President Joe Biden made the big announcement himself in Detroit. Hitachi one-ups WD with industry-first 2TB 7200RPM 3.5-inch hard drive
Western Digital may have been first to launch a two terabyte 3.5-inch desktop hard drive, but it's Hitachi snagging the first 7200RPM 2TB crown (WD's entry hummed along at 5400RPM). Launched today, the 2TB Deskstar 7K2000 also features 32MB of cache and a 3Gbps SATA interface, but unfortunately, few other details are being disclosed. New-fangled digital measuring cup actually improves upon the original
Now, there may not be a whole lot to this one -- it's simply a measuring cup with a backlit LCD on the handle that tells you the exact volume of the liquid you're measuring -- but it's a step forward in the culinary world, where it still feels like it's 1917 a lot of the time. The Smart Measure -- which started out as a concept on Yanko Design and has been picked up for distribution by kitchen giant Taylor -- boasts a bunch of preset measurements for ingredients in common recipes, and it can also do conversions for you, as well. Philips to unveil saliva-based roadside drug test later this year
In the vein of the breathalyzer, Philips has developed an on-the-go drug test, that can be used by the side of the road to test suspected imbibers for cocaine, heroin, cannabis, amphetamines and methaphetamine. Samsung and Sprint introduce the Reclaim -- a cellphone made from corn
We love the Earth, and apparently so do Sprint and Samsung. The two companies have just introduced the Reclaim, a super-eco cellphone made from 80 percent recycled materials. The device -- a stout, sliding, QWERTY message-friendly model -- is constructed from "bio-plastic" materials made from corn, is free of PVC, and mostly free of BFR (brominated flame retardants) which are apparently pretty bad. Telekom steigert dank OTE-Beteiligung Umsatz und Gewinn
Die Deutsche Telekom hat ihren Umsatz und Gewinn im zweiten Quartal gesteigert. Der Gewinn vor Zinsen, Steuern und Abschreibungen (EBITDA) legte gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahrs um 8,4 Prozent auf 5,3 Milliarden Euro zu. Studie zum CPU-Markt: Verkaufszahlen erholen sich wieder

TomTom for iPhone £99 UK price revealed in retail blunder
A UK retailer has revealed the local price for the long-awaited TomTom for iPhone navigation system - £99 ($168) excluding UK sales tax.
TomTom hasn’t yet revealed pricing for the system, promising only to ship the iPhone satnav “this summer” - and there’s scant weeks until summer’s end.
UK retailer Handtec prematurely listed the system on its site. The system includes a windscreen mount, iPhone charger, amplified speakers, a hands-free kit and a GPS dongle.

IDC: Markt für Online-Werbung schrumpft weiter
Im zweiten Quartal 2009 ist der Markt für Onlinewerbung laut IDC erneut zurückgegangen. Die Ausgaben sanken in den USA um 7 Prozent von 6,2 Milliarden auf 6,6 Milliarden Dollar, weltweit aber um 5 Prozent von 14,7 auf 13,9 Milliarden. Der Vergleich bezieht sich auf den Vorjahreszeitraum.

Verwirrung um Fehler in Windows 7

8GB iPhone 3GS coming shortly via Rogers?
BGR has the deets on what appears to be an 8GB iPhone3GS entering the Rogers inventory system. If this is real, it will most likely mean the end of the iPhone 3G as we know it as there isn't much room ($149?) in the middle of the current lineup for the sole non "S" 8GB model. As Tim Cook mentioned at the last earnings conference call, Apple is having trouble keeping up with demand on current iPhone3GS models around the world.

Massive memory leak threatens to derail Windows 7 launch
Infoworld is reporting that there is a very significant memory leak in Windows 7 involving the chkdsk.exe utility which appears when
you attempt to run the program against a secondary (that is, not the boot partition) hard disk using the "/r" (read and verify all file data) parameter. The problem affects both 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and is classified as a "showstopper" in that it can cause the OS to crash (Blue Screen of Death) as it runs out of physical memory.
Randall Kennedy tested the bug against a variety of different builds of the RTM Windows 7. The bug appeared in VMs, 32-bit Netbooks and 64-bit laptops. The bug also appears in Windows Explorer when you run the integrated disk check utility.

Seit gestern ca. 22:30 steht das voraussichtlich letzte System Update vor Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard zum Download via Software Update zur Verfügung. Der Fokus in 10.5.8 liegt dabei auf Bug Fixes. Nach all den schlechten Nachrichten über den App Store für das iPhone muss ein App Store für den Mac schlimmste Befürchtungen hervorrufen. Die Entwickler von Bodega müssen sich aber noch anstrengen, um einen ähnlich schlechten Ruf wie Apple zu erreichen. iPhone-Wörterbuch fällt Apple-Zensur zum Opfer
John Gruber meldet bei Daringfireball.net einen weiteren Fall, in dem Apple eine iPhone-Anwendung aus zweifelhaften Gründen zunächst von seinem App Store ausgeschlossen hat. Im Laufe der letzten Woche hat Apple viel Kritik um das löschen von Apps wie Google Voice erhalten. Die Google Voice App als Dienstprogramm wurde von vielen Nutzern gerne angenommen, entsprechend unglücklich war man über die Apple-Blockade. Gagan Biyani, vom Informationsdienst mobilecrunch.com, hat in einem Artikel zu Thema "AppStore Rauswürfe" mal über den Tellerrand geblickt. Was ist wenn Apple völlig nutzlose Apps vom AppStore löscht? Wie mit 900 Apps - alle von einem Entwickler - geschehen. Apple hat sich dafür entschieden, es hat die Lizenz des Entwicklers Khalid Shaikhs, Gründers von Perfect Acumen, widerrufen. Khalid Shaikh hatte bisher gute Gewinne mit dem App Store durch zweifelhafte Mittel gemacht. In weniger als neun Monaten haben Khalid Shaikh und seine 26-Mitarbeiter (von denen die meisten in Pakistan arbeiten) 943 Apps veröffentlicht. Bis zum 24. Microsoft seems determined to recover some of the AppStore developers for its Windows Marketplace, which should be launched soon. The company has published a case study detailing the porting of an iPhone application (Amplitude) to Windows Mobile 6.5.
Bearing in mind that porting an application to another platform is not an easy task. Indeed, the two development environments (SDKs) from Apple and Microsoft are quite different: the programming language is not the same (mostly C# for Windows Mobile and Objective-C on the iPhone OS, C/C++ is possible on both). Amazon offers Snow Leopard Pre-Order
Announced for September, Snow Leopard is now available as pre-order from Amazon (US) and has already obtained the first two spots for products in pre-order (ahead of Windows 7 which is not in the top 10).

TomTom support for the iPhone to Cost 135 Euros?
Announced at WWDC, TomTom iPhone support (as well as the navigation application) should be released this summer.
