Chrome, Safari chip at IE web share in July
Internet Explorer's share of the web browser market has dropped to its lowest point in recent memory thanks to inroads from Apple and Google, new stats from Net Applications show. Zune HD's browser previewed, sounds just as sexy as the hardware
The folks over at CNET got a quick look at a recent build of the Zune HD, and the player seems to be getting rather close to a final product. Among praise for the hardware, video playback and a quite refined music player and music discovery experience, they found the Zune HD's browser to be particularly excellent. Massive memory leak threatens to derail Windows 7 launch
Infoworld is reporting that there is a very significant memory leak in Windows 7 involving the chkdsk.exe utility which appears when
you attempt to run the program against a secondary (that is, not the boot partition) hard disk using the "/r" (read and verify all file data) parameter. The problem affects both 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and is classified as a "showstopper" in that it can cause the OS to crash (Blue Screen of Death) as it runs out of physical memory.
Randall Kennedy tested the bug against a variety of different builds of the RTM Windows 7. The bug appeared in VMs, 32-bit Netbooks and 64-bit laptops. The bug also appears in Windows Explorer when you run the integrated disk check utility

White Samsung Galaxy spotted in the wild
We just caught a glimpse of a white / silver Samsung Galaxy yesterday, but it looks like any doubts about its realness have now been put to rest, as the very same Android-based phone has now been spotted in the wild. As you might expect, however, there's apparently no other differences compared to the standard black Galaxy we've been seeing all along and, just like the black model, this one will reportedly be available first on O2 Germany before rolling out to other carriers in Europe. Apple phasing out iPhone 3G in favor of 8GB 3GS?
As brilliant as the $99 subsidized iPhone 3G strategy might seem on paper, the fact remains that the 3G now is a 13 month-old device -- the better part of a lifetime by smartphone standards -- and it stands to reason that Apple wouldn't be interested in consuming manufacturing capacity indefinitely with outdated equipment, especially since that game plan cuts into economies of scale on the 3GS' chipset and superior camera hardware. The solution? Let iPhone 3G inventory cool down for a few months -- $99 is a nice, round number after all that's plenty low enough to move units -- and when the carnage is over, phase it out in favor of a new lower-cost 3GS. First 21 Xbox 'Games on Demand' titles revealed
Next Tuesday (that's August 11th), a dream we have long held near our hearts will be fulfilled -- Xbox 360 will add the first twenty-one titles to its Games on Demand service. 8GB iPhone 3GS coming shortly via Rogers?
BGR has the deets on what appears to be an iPhone3GS entering the Rogers inventory system. This will most likely mean the end of the iPhone 3G as we know it as there isn't much room ($149?) in the middle of the current lineup. While Russia may have problems shifting its iPhones, it’s no way the same Down Under in Australia, where reports this week state the iPhone 3GS is selling out.

O2 to lose iPhone exclusivity October 9, other carriers and customers rejoice
Big news for iPhone cravers in the UK, as a report this morning claims O2’s exclusive claim to offer the device will time out on October 9, freeing other networks up to offer the must-have device for sale here.
Mobile Entertainment is claiming to have seen documentation, “that states it (exclusivity) will end officially on October 9.” This comes after weeks of chatter claiming other networks are vying to add the iPhone to their roster of available mobiles.
One limitation of the time out may be that O2 will continue to offer the iPhone 3GS exclusively in the UK, leaving the cheaper and less well-feat

The iPod is dying, long live the iPod....
How much is the iPod line faltering - - or how well is the rest of Apple's line doing in comparison? It turns out that after GAAP accounting is taken out of the equation, the iPod line, which once was Apple's profit leader is now #3 in profitability, beating only Apple's AppleTV line.
As this graphic shows, iPod sales have been contributing a shrinking amount of revenue to Apple’s general performance, skip past the break to see another graph which shows us in clearer terms the shrinkage of iPod revenues.

Sprint's new mobile broadband routers pack WiMAX and 3G, MiFi looks on in jealousy
As if the MiFi hadn't already piqued our interest, Sprint's new foray into mobile broadband routers is downright riveting. The Sprint Personal Hotspot PH300s and Cradlepoint MBR-1000 Broadband Router (pictured) both do essentially the same thing, pulling down EV-DO Rev. A or WiMAX data and sharing it with your closest compatriots over WiFi -- and finally sporting enough bandwidth to do it in style. The PH300s obviously has a more "personal" slant, with only four simultaneous 802.11g WiFi connections, while the MBR-1000 is meant for business use and can serve up to 32 users over 802.11n. Averatec's N3400 reviewed: looks good, performs well, dies early
Averatec probably isn't the first name that pops into your head when you think of cleanly designed thin laptops, but if the $800 N3400 is any indication of things to come, that could change. Big news for iPhone cravers in the UK, as a report this morning claims O2’s exclusive claim to offer the device will time out on October 9, freeing other networks up to offer the must-have device for sale here.

Palm Pre vs. Apple iTunes: Disput erreicht nächste Eskalationsstufe
Über die vergangenen Wochen waren regelrechte Grabenkämpfe zwischen Apple und Palm zu beobachten. Das eine Unternehmen stellt ein Programm zur Archivierung und Übertragung von Medieninhalten auf Smartphones namens iTunes zur Verfügung, das andere ein Gerät namens Pre, welches mit diesem Programm zusammen arbeiten soll aber nicht darf. While Russia may have problems shifting its iPhones, it’s no way the same Down Under in Australia, where reports this week state the iPhone 3GS is selling out.

Ustream 3GS Recorder im App Store

He’s only been in post a month, but new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman, Julius Genachowski, ain’t no slouch - he’s a tech-savvy consumer champion and he wants to foster a culture of competition and innovation - and he’s an iPhone user.
Perhaps that’s why Genachowski’s been so quick to act over Apple’s rejection of the Google Voice app, which most commentators still believe - despite AT&T’s rejection of the argument - was denied a place in the App Store because its users would be able to make calls with Google, circumventing AT&T’s network and impacting the telco’s revenue.

Silicon Alley Insider is reporting (Wall Street gossip) that Apple may be building an online payment platform similar to Google Checkout, Paypal and the also-rumored Facebook's "Pay with Facebook".
It really isn't that big of a stretch, Apple already plays that role for in-app purchases on the iPhone platform. They also already have millions and millions of global account holders tied to credit cards (Jobs noted 65 million active iTunes accounts just last year).

Shaw Wu starts guessing tablet screen sizes and release dates, doesn't miss much
In one of the more laughable tablet predictions to date, notoriously unreliable Shaw Wu from Kaufman Bros. announces that Apple has been ordering large amounts of 4, 7, 9, 10 and 12-inch screens over the past two years and "based on that information, the analysis [sic] predicts that Apple will launch at least one -- but possibly multiple -- new devices in the near future".

iProd 1,1(Tablet?) lives inside, runs iPhone OS 3.1
Ars points to a USBDeviceConfiguration file which lives in the iPhone SDK 3.1 that has a surprising new addition. Included in all of the recent iPhone SDK updates until now has been the iProd 0,1 device file. 0,1 device files typically stand for prototypes in Apple hardware lingo.
As of iPhone SDK 3.1, there is now a new device profile for an iProd 1,1. Theoretically, this means that production "iProd" devices are already being trialled on iPhone OS 3.1. Ars speculates that this could be the tablet or perhaps even an iPod nano with a camera that would run the iPhoneOS (and would therefore have a lot of other goodies).

Bitkom: Zahl der Handynutzer steigt dieses Jahr auf 4,4 Milliarden
Weltweit wird die Zahl der Handynutzer in diesem Jahr erstmals die Marke von vier Milliarden überschreiten. Das berichtet der Hightech-Verband Bitkom auf Basis aktueller Daten des European Information Technology Observatory (EITO). Demnach steigt die Zahl der Handynutzer um zwölf Prozent von 3,9 Milliarden im Jahr 2008 auf rund 4,4 Milliarden 2009. Damit nutzen rechnerisch zwei Drittel der Weltbevölkerung ein Mobiltelefon.

Native speakers of Welsh, take heed! Orange has announced that a Welsh-language version of the Samsung S5600 will be made available in September. Just a few weeks after debuting its Twitter and Facebook widgets, Verizon is refreshing them by giving viewers an onscreen cellphone-style keyboard to mash out their own tweets and Facebook status updates from the remote. Though we wonder if it wouldn't be easier to just use ones actual cellphone to spread your inane viewing habits amongst those unlucky enough to count you as a friend, the services have apparently been quite popular so far, with millions of Tweets and Facebook photos viewed since it was released. Fraunhofer Institute's fruit checker device tracks optimum ripeness so you can stop sniffing those melons
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute have developed a small device that can be used to check the freshness of fruit, telling the interested parties whether it's ripe or not. Based on previous technologies which measure, for example car emissions, the device measures the volatile gases emitted by the fruit and analyzes its makeup to determine the state of freshness. Study says LEDs are about as efficient than compact fluorescents, all things considered
As we've seen with the slight resurgence of new and improved incandescent light bulbs, the amount of energy used to actually light up the bulb isn't necessarily the whole measure of energy efficiency. There's also the small matter of producing the bulb, shipping it around the world, and eventually disposing of it. Sony Reader Pocket and Touch editions lower cost of entry, online e-book store follows suit

Acting Cybersecurity Czar resigns for 'personal reasons'

"iProd" - Rätselraten um neues Apple-Produkt
Erstmals ist die mysteriöse Produktbezeichnung "iProd" im März diesen Jahres in einer Beta von iPhone OS 3.0 aufgetaucht. Was damals noch sehr vage klang und im schlimmsten Fall Produkt eines Tippfehlers sein konnte, scheint sich langsam aber sicher tatsächlich als neues Apple-Produkt zu manifestieren: Ars Technica veröffentlicht jetzt Screenshots aus der aktuellen Betaversion von iPhone OS 3.1, auf denen der (oder das) "iProd" gleich mit zwei verschiedenen Versionsnummern in einer Voreinstellungsdatei gelistet wird.
