BlackBerry Essex to bring WiFi on Tour?
We're starting to get the feeling they just didn't know about WiFi in Waterloo until now, because almost every BlackBerry hardware rumor we're hearing lately is all about how RIM's adding the wireless networking spec and everyone's oh-so-happy. Case in point: today we've got word of a new BlackBerry Essex, which is essentially the Tour with WiFi. Seriously, that's the whole rumor, and we're guessing it has something to do with Sprint mandating WiFi on all of its future handsets, so it's not even particularly wild. Snow Leopard Boot Camp supports 64-bit Windows 7

Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 Update v.1.1 freigegeben

Apple veröffentlicht SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0 für iMac und Mac mini

Toyota develops breathalyzer ignition-interlock, BJ McKay promises to hack it
Shoving breathalyzers into MIDs and PNDs has been all the rage overseas for quite a while, and now it looks like Toyota itself is getting in on the act. The breath-alcohol ignition-interlock system features a handset that detects alcohol on your breath (if any) and snaps your mug with a digital camera. Depending on your level of "fun" (that is, alcohol consumption) the thing can be set to alert you (in case you forgot about those three Iron Citys) or lock the vehicle's ignition altogether. English scientists set out to build first biological robot using mold
Researchers at the University of the West of England have snagged a grant to fund the building of a whole new type of robot -- a non-silicon, biological plasmobot, built using plasmodium, a vegetative type of slime mold. The mold, which is commonly found living in forests and gardens, is, according to researcher Andy Adamatzky, a "naturally occurring substance with its own built in intelligence," which is capable of carrying out complex tasks, like figuring out the shortest path between two points -- all on its own. App Store: GTA im Herbst, Navigon Special
Rockstar Games wollen das bislang nur für Nintendo DS erhältliche Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars in den App Store bringen. Der Titel soll im Herbst für den iPod touch und das iPhone erscheinen.
Navigon beendet heute die Sonderaktion für den MobileNavigator Europe (79 statt 99 Euro). Statt dessen gibt es das Kartenpaket Deutschland-Österreich-Schweiz noch bis zum 30. September für 49 statt 69 Euro. Beides läuft nur auf dem iPhone, nicht auf dem iPod touch!

Canon EOS 7D video specs get detailed
Canon's seemingly imminent EOS 7D DSLR may still not be fully official just yet, but there's certainly no end to the leaks these days, with the camera's complete video specs only the latest to surface. Assuming this latest rumor is on the mark, it looks like you can expect to get your choice of 24, 25 or 30 fps video at full 1080p, or 50 or 60 fps at 720p, along with an external mic, full manual controls (though not continuous focus, it seems), some in-camera editing options and, of course, and HDMI out port for some big screen viewing. Researchers developing OLEDs as cheap as newspapers?
Sure, it'll probably be a good while before you get your hands on an OLED TV, but don't lose heart, young gadget-head! Techno-wizards at the RIKEN center in Japan have concoted a new way to fashion OLEDs that eschews the standard spin-coated films for something called electrospray-deposited polymer films, incorporating "a novel dual-solvent concept" that makes the 'em "smoother than before, thereby enabling superior devices." It may not be a Beatles line or a Hendrix line (it's a Stones line) but the September 9th event is now official. Apple sent invites out to the tech journalist community today. The event will again be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco at 10AM PST.

Nikon D300s unboxing and hands-on
Nikon's D300s has been filtering out to select retail locations for a few days now, and judging by the box that just arrived on our doorstep, we'd say Nikon (just barely) kept its promise of having these things out by the end of August. The semi-pro body is significantly more sturdy and somewhat heavier than our in-house D90, though the rear LCD sure looks awfully similar. We're planning on giving the 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor and 720p movie mode a go, but for now, feel free to peruse the gallery below to see exactly what a penny under $1,800 gets you in the DSLR world these days.

Apple releases ODBC and Server Administrator tools for Snow Leopard
When Apple released Snow Leopard they did not include the ODBC utility that was part of previous versions of OS X. Some people have relied on this for connecting to and administering various databases, and were concerned about it missing from Snow Leopard. In addition, the Administrator tools for Leopard did not function properly with the new OS.

Insider trading of Apple stock being investigated by SEC
According to the Huffington Post, the SEC is in the process of an investigation into the trading in Apple's securities both in the US and abroad. The information was revealed in a series of documents sent to the brokerage community:
I have obtained copies of those internal SEC documents from a regulatory contact. Interestingly, the nature of its interest shows that the commission is not investigating, as is usually the case, the trading that occurred in a specific time period, but rather, in this instance, in four specific time periods. Did AT&T get a sour apple when it snagged the iPhone?
No. But the WSJ feels otherwise. Their arguments:
The iPhone used to generate 40% new users for AT&T in 2007. Now that has dropped "all the way down" to 35%. No other Smartphone brings over a third of their customers from another network or anything close to that. What is a good number for the WSJ? 90%?

Dual SIM card adapter for iPhone 3G/3GS?
USB Fever has an interesting product in their matrix this morning. The Q-Dual SIM card adapter apparently allows you to manually switch between two SIM cards in your iPhone. The package also includes an external battery and case in one package.
It isn't clear whether this bypasses Apple's carrier exclusivity settings or, for instance, you would just need two legit AT&T SIMs. It seems to be geared toward international travellers who might have an AT&T card in the US and a O2 SIM when travelling to the UK, for example. Sony cooking up a Jimi Hendrix Apple iTunes Cocktail?
Alright, time for a little early morning speculation, but it seems to us the music business is preparing a range of tasty treats designed to fit like lovely snugly gloves around Apple’s rumoured Cocktail music format and the industry’s attempt at the same, CMX.
We know the Beatles have a box set coming through soon (which is picking up lots of pre-release positive murmurings on music industry networks), and we think that release could easily lend itself to Cocktail. Maybe. (We do look forward to testing speculation on or around September 9).

AT&T, O2 wave bye-bye to iPhone exclusivity, Gene Munster suggests
Those cosy exclusive deals between Apple and carriers including AT&T and O2 may be on the way out, as the company seeks to widen market share and regulators ponder the significance of these deals as they examine the business methods of the wireless industries.
We’ve heard plenty of reports suggesting Apple plans to at least partially abandon these exclusive tie-ups.

The fresh China Unicom iPhone deal is not an exclusive one, an Apple spokeswoman has confirmed. Thin Clients per iPhone administrieren
"Management by Turnschuh" für Netzadministratoren - das war gestern. Jedenfalls wenn es um die Verwaltung von Thin Clients des Herstellers Liscon geht. Der österreichische Anbieter kündigte jetzt eine Version seiner Verwaltungssoftware LMC an, die auch vom iPhone (oder Android-basierten Geräten wie dem HTC Magic) aus bedient werden kann. Dies geschieht allerdings nicht über eine native App, sondern passwortgeschützt über eine optimierte Website. Admins sollen dann alle Funktionen wie Änderung von Parametern, Verschieben von Thin Clients in andere Gruppen, Nutzung des Vererbungsmechanismus' zur Konfiguration und Weitergabe von Eigenschaften in den einzelnen Gruppen oder die digitale Peripheriegeräte-Inventarisierung nutzen können.

ASUS' Eee PC roadmap leaks: Ion-boasting netbooks, multitouch T91 coming soon?

Dual SIM card adapter for iPhone 3G/3GS?
USB Fever has an interesting product in their matrix this morning. The Q-Dual SIM card adapter apparently allows you to manually switch between two SIM cards in your iPhone. The package also includes an external battery and case in one package.
It isn't clear whether this bypasses Apple's carrier exclusivity settings or, for instance, you would just need two legit AT&T SIMs. It seems to be geared toward international travellers who might have an AT&T card in the US and a O2 SIM when travelling to the UK, for example. Snow Leopard: iSync-Icon ausblenden
Mit der Einführung von Snow Leopard ist es möglich, den Kalender und die Kontakte mit Yahoo und Google zu synchronisieren. Das hat allerdings zur Folge, dass das iSync-Icon in der Menüleiste eingeblendet wird.

Psystar klagt Recht auf Verkauf von PCs mit Snow Leopard ein
Wie AppleInsider berichtet, hat Psystar eine neue Klage gegen Apple eingereicht. Der Mac-Klon-Hersteller will per einstweiliger Verfügung Apple die Bindung von Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard an offizielle Mac-Computer untersagen. Snow Leopard: MobileMe Icon ausblenden
Mit der Einführung von Snow Leopard ist es möglich, den Kalender und die Kontakte mit Yahoo und Google zu synchronisieren. Das hat allerdings zur Folge, dass das iSync-Icon in der Menüleiste eingeblendet wird.
Als MobileMe-Benutzer kann man das Icon direkt in den MobileMe-Sync-Einstellungen entfernen. Ohne MobileMe-Account findet man die Funktion in den iSync-Einstellungen.

"Cheap" SLC-based SSD from OCZ
If most SSD manufacturers used MLC memory chips for their SSD models, this is only because one can reach higher storage space at a cheaper price, when compared to SLC which is faster in random access and offer longer lifetime. Nevertheless, there is a growing market for SLC-based SSD: storage units for servers. OCZ designed a new model especially for this purpose: Agility EX.
This is the first SLC drive with a "cheap"/reasonable price: It will cost you 400 € for 60 GB. thanks to a Indilix Barefoot controller, it offers 255 MB/S and 195 MB/s respectively in reading and writing mode. To capture the entire server market, manufacturers will have to also offer such SSD with a SAS interface.

Broken or cracked plastic near one or both of the hinges.
More than one inch (2.54cm) of free play while opening or closing the lid.

All iPods EOL?
According to ArsTechnica, all iPods would be EOL (End of Life) with new models expected for September 9th. If this information is not a surprise for iPods nano and Touch (larger storage capacity + integrated camera), it is relatively puzzling for the iPod Classic.
Last year, Apple limited the choice of iPod classic to a single model of 120 GB, despite new 1.8" HD offering 240 GB or more. So, Apple should either upgrade the iPod Classic to a larger HD, or change the design or most likely stop this product as sales are now only marginal and targeting a niche market. Such users could switch to the iPod Touch which could offer 64 GB of storage space. The answer in 10 days.

Insider trading of Apple Stock being investigated by SEC
According to the Huffington Post, the SEC is in the process of an investigation into the trading in Apple's securities both in the US and abroad. The information was revealed in a series of documents sent to the brokerage community:
I have obtained copies of those internal SEC documents from a regulatory contact. Interestingly, the nature of its interest shows that the commission is not investigating, as is usually the case, the trading that occurred in a specific time period, but rather, in this instance, in four specific time periods. NFL to let Cowboys giant HD scoreboard stay as-is, at least for 2009
The NFL has ruled on the Dallas Cowboys punt blocking super-sized videoboard deciding to leave it where it is, 90 feet above the playing field, at least for this season. Microsoft new media chief warns TV against 'iTunes moment'
Former BBC iPlayer boss and now Microsoft UK’s MD consumer and online, Ashley Highfield has warned broadcasters they have two years to create viable digital businesses, or face an ‘iTunes moment’ in which they could hand over control of their businesses online to Apple.
Highfield warned that advertising spend will eventually migrate to online services such as Facebook, which will create heavy pressure on broadcasters. Rather than give Apple control, Highfield told attendees at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival to take action now.

Analyst: "MacBook Air has some of the aesthetic qualities of the tablet"
CNET has an incredibly vague analyst quote mentioning that Apple's tablet resembles the MacBook Air. Brook Crothers says:

Find my iPhone leads to capture of iPhone thieves
We aren't surprised by this at all and expect to see more and more of it as GPS devices become more ubiquitous. Pittsburgh police last night nabbed a trio of iPhone robbers who were caught using the iPhone's "Find My iPhone" service.
The victim, who was not identified by police, said two men approached him at about 1 a.m. near the intersection of Amberson Avenue and Amberson Place. Adobe says sorry for 'unacceptable' customer support
Following the fuss and bother of earlier this week, Adobe now appears to be making moves to get closer to its customers.
