Palm complains about Apple to USB governing body, while Pre / iTunes sync "fix" is explained
You should be refilling that popcorn bucket right about now. While we thought the next round of the Pre / iTunes syncing fiasco would probably be something simple like Apple releasing another quick patch, Palm has stepped it up a notch by complaining to the USB Implementers Forum over what it sees is "improper use of the Vendor ID number" by the gang at Cupertino. What the company means is that when an ID is applied for, a form is signed that states:"Unauthorized use of assigned or unassigned USB Vendor ID Numbers and associated Product ID Numbers are strictly prohibited." WiTricity vows wireless power in 1.5 years

MathMagic 6.4 adds OpenType fonts
InfoLogic has posted v6.4 of MathMagic, its equation editor. The app is divided into two main editions: Personal, which exports generalized output, and Pro, which includes plug-ins for either InDesign or QuarkXPress. Japanese researchers develop baseball playing robots, Mark Buehrle reportedly unimpressed
Professor Masatoshi Ishikawa at the University of Tokyo has developed two baseball-playing robots -- one that pitches, and one that hits. The three-fingered pitching bot throws a plastic foam ball at about twenty-five miles per hour, and lands ninety percent of its pitches in the strike zone, while the batting bot has a sensor which determines whether the pitches are balls or strikes, and hits balls in the strike zone with nearly one hundred percent accuracy. They are currently working on increasing the pitcher to about ninety-three miles an hour. The robots don't have any human stylings -- though, personally, we do detect a hint of Terminator.

Pré Compatibility with iTunes Is Back
Palm released an update of Web OS for its Pré. Among the bug fixes, Palm brought back support for synchronization with the last iTunes version. So, they bypassed changes introduced by Apple in the recently released version 8.2.1 in order to avoid having to deal with Pré owners complaining about the lack of compatibility with iTunes, as this is used by Palm for advertising the Pré.Palm demonstrates that the company does not plan to give up its little hack to allow this partial interoperability with iTunes, so if it is not the war, one will have to see in the future how Apple plan to react. Indeed, the little cat & mouse game might remain soft and lead to more important consequences. Samsung confirms a Tegra-based smartphone is in the works, all other details shrouded in mystery
NVIDIA's Tegra chip has shown itself to be quite a gem, especially in the field of augmented reality zombie destruction. Looks like Samsung agrees with that sentiment, and has confirmed that it's currently developing a smartphone with the powerful processor. Motorola's MOTODEV "accelerates" Android development; isn't a phone
We can't fault Motorola for trying to get some developer tools out in the hands of Joe the App Developer before the company launches its own Android phone, but you'd think it would at least announce a handset before getting all dev tool happy. Microsoft relents to European Commission, will give users browser freedom in Windows 7

OWC reduces Mercury Pro, Toast Pro bundle prices
OWC is reducing the price of its Mercury Pro Quad Interface Blu-ray drives, and also introducing new Toast Pro bundle packages. The Mercury Pros feature FireWire 400/800, USB 2.0 and eSATA interfaces. Two models exist, the first of which now costs $300 and burns Blu-ray discs at 6x speeds, DVDs at 16x, and CDs at 40x. GlobalFoundries building 28nm chip factory
GlobalFoundries on Friday began building a new factory dedicated to making more advanced processors. The Saratoga County, New York-based Fab 2 plant is due to be completely ready by 2012 and will make processors on processes current by the time the factory opens. Epic Games VP says new consoles are a "long way off," Natal is the "next Xbox"
We've heard plenty of talk about ten-year console life cycles for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and it looks like there's some consensus starting to build around the idea that any new consoles really are still a long ways off. Speaking with Eurogamer earlier this week, Epic Games VP Mark Rein cast some doubt on the very need for new consoles anytime soon, pointing out that "over half the users who played Gears of War 2 so far do not have HDTVs," and adding that "there's no way we're ready for the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox Whatever." Palm claims Apple abusing USB ID in iTunes
Palm has not only restored iTunes syncing for the Pre but has accused Apple of abusing the USB standard to keep other devices out. Vodafone meldet Umsatzplus und bestätigt Jahresprognose
Die Vodafone Group hat ihren Umsatz im ersten Quartal des Geschäftsjahrs 2010 (bis 30. Juni) gegenüber dem Vorjahr trotz Wirtschaftskrise um 9,3 Prozent auf 10,743 Milliarden britische Pfund (12,411 Milliarden Euro) gesteigert. Auf organischer Basis schrumpfte der Serviceumsatz jedoch um 2,1 Prozent, wie aus der heute veröffentlichten Bilanz (PDF) hervorgeht. Dennoch bestätigte der britische Mobilfunkkonzern seine im Mai erstellte Jahresprognose für den operativen Gewinn von 11 bis 11,8 Milliarden Pfund.

Final Cut Pro let's you burn to Blu-Ray...bag of hurt en route to new Macs?
Purely speculation here:
As Gizmodo points out, the new final Cut Pro Studio allows direct burning to BluRay Disc. Problem is, Apple doesn't sell any Blu-Ray hardwareyet. Steve Jobs famously called Blu-Ray "a bag of hurt" because of all of the licensing restrictions, etc. that went along with putting BluRay into Macs.
You could always, of course, buy a Blu-Ray extern

Hacker: iPhone immer noch leicht zu knacken

Google hat im zweiten Quartal 950.000 Dollar für Lobbyarbeit in Washington DC ausgegeben. Diese Summe nennt zumindest eine Datenbank der US-Regierung, die sich auf der Website des Senats findet. Apple soll die Sicherheit beim iPhone 3 GS stark verbessert haben. Der iPhone-Spezialist Jonathan Zdiarski kommt zu anderen Ergebnissen. Verizon growth trails AT&T in spring
Verizon this morning hoped to upend AT&T's positive results by touting its subscriber additions ahead of its actual quarterly update. The company says it added 1.1 million new customers in spring and now has a total of 87.7 million subscribers, or 8.1 million more than AT&T has after its own spring quarter. Amazons Nettogewinn sinkt um zehn Prozent
Amazon hat im zweiten Quartal 2009 (bis 30. Juni) einen Nettogewinn von 142 Millionen Dollar oder 0,32 Dollar pro Aktie erwirtschaftet - zehn Prozent weniger als im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres. Das geht aus den gestern veröffentlichten Zahlen des amerikanischen Online-Händlers hervor.

iPhone vs. iTouch vs. Android
In ihrem monatlichen Report der Spezialisten für mobile Marketing AdMob haben sie sich auf die Verteilung von iPhone und iPod touch im von ihnen via integrierter Anzeigen betrachtbaren Netzwerk konzentriert. Verbunden mit den aktuellen Apple-Zahlen ergeben sich ff. Highlights:
1. Im Junie 2009 befanden sich 54% der iPhone und iTouch-Anwender im AdMob-Netzwerk in den USA. Im Januar d.J. waren noch 61% gewesen, was für zulegendes Wachstum ausserhalb der Vereinigten Staaten spricht. Auf den Plätzen folgen England, Deutschland und Frankreich mit je 5%. Diesen Nutzungszahlen sollen ca. 13 Mio. iPhones i.d. USA und je ca. 1 Mio. iPhones in UK, D und F entsprechen.
2. Das Verhältnis iPhone zu iTouch betrug im Juni in etwa 2:1. Dieser Wert ist bereits seit mehreren Monaten stabil.
Ein weiteres spannendes Ergebnis: Mit einem Wachstum von 25 Prozent pro Monat (!) haben Android-basierende Plattformen inzwischen rd. 5% Anteil im AdMob-Netz und haben damit erstmal Windows Mob

Fujitsu promises to deliver fastest gaming rig "on the planet"
Fujitsu may not be doing much talking about specifics just yet, but it sure is doing plenty of boasting about its now-in-development gaming desktop, which it says will be the "fastest rig on the planet." Adobe kündigt Flash für Smartphones an - iPhone-Version jedoch ungewiss
Bis Ende des Jahres wird es eine funktionstüchtige Flash-Version für Mobilfunkgeräte geben, verspricht Adobes CFO Kevin Lynch. Diese soll vor allem Multi-Touch und Bewegungssensoren unterstützen, die sich auf Smartphones derzeit bewähren. Ob damit auch das Warten der iPhone-Besitzer auf die Flash-Funktion ein Ende hat, bleibt jedoch unklar, denn Adobe präsentierte die Ideen ausschließlich auf Mobiltelefonen mit Googles Android.

Computer für 1000 US-Dollar und mehr: 91 Prozent sind Macs
"Der Marktanteil von Macs liegt bei 91 Prozent." Was wie ein äußerst optimistischer Blick in die Zukunft klingt, ist laut dem Marktforschungsunternehmen NPD tatsächlich wahr - zumindest wenn man den Fokus auf Computer-Systeme im oberen Preissegment setzt. Bei Hardware-Verkäufen für über 1000 US-Dollar hat Apple nämlich deutlich die Nase vorn, während Microsoft noch immer mit großem Abstand den Niedrigpreismarkt dominiert. Disney plans Alice in Wonderland game for iPhone, but not for Mac

Adobe kündigt Patch für kritische Flash-Lücke an
Adobe will in der nächsten Woche eine als kritisch eingestufte Sicherheitslücke in Adobe Flash schließen. Microsofts Umsatz und Gewinn brechen im vierten Fiskalquartal ein
Microsoft hat im vierten Fiskalquartal (bis 30. Juni) erneut einen Umsatz- und Gewinnrückgang ausgewiesen. Während der Gewinn gegenüber dem Vorjahresquartal um 29 Prozent auf 3,045 Milliarden Dollar oder 0,34 Dollar je Aktie schrumpfte, sank der Umsatz um 17 Prozent auf 13,1 Milliarden Dollar. Einnahmen in Höhe von 276 Millionen Dollar aus dem Windows-7-Upgrade-Programm sind darin nicht enthalten.

Umsatz und Gewinn bei Microsoft deutlich gesunken
Die Wirtschaftskrise hat Microsoft trotz ihrer PC-Werbekampagne stärker erwischt, als allgemein erwartet wurde. So gab das Unternehmen gestern Abend für das abgelaufene Quartal einen Umsatzrückgang um 17 Prozent auf nunmehr 13 Milliarden US-Dollar bekannt. Der operative Gewinn brach noch stärker ein und sank im vergangenen Quartal auf 4 Milliarden US-Dollar. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahreszeitraum entspricht dies einem Rückgang um 30 Prozent.

EMC übertrifft im zweiten Quartal Erwartungen der Analysten
EMC hat im zweiten Quartal 2009 elf Prozent weniger Umsatz erzielt als im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres. Die Einnahmen von 3,26 Milliarden Dollar lagen aber leicht über den von Analysten prognostizierten 3,2 Milliarden Dollar. Does Apple Really Hold 91% of Revenue Market Share for 1,000 USD+ Computers?
According to NPD, Apple broke a new record last June in USA by capturing 91% of revenue market share for &,000 + computers segment. Despite the fact that it is 3% more than in May, those figures are puzzling and might push competitors to think twice or start dissecting what is being those numbers.
As mentioned by some analysts, those figures would indicate that recent advertising campaigns from did not really target customers as expected or claimed. It could also define Windows as the OS of cheap and dirty computers? This is for sure not entirely true as some cheap netbooks are not powerful enough to run Vista, or even XP.
We also think that those figures might have been slightly biased or not really representing the reality. A percentage is always impressive, but one should also provide the number of units sold or corresponding revenue in the defined segment to provide a better perspective. Jailbroken iPhone: Issue with Push Function, not Apple's Fault?
Following the release of the iPhone OS 3.0, several hackers released tools to jailbreak aux iPhones loaded with this new OS. However, people rapidly notice that the psh function was not working anymore. Unexpectedly, some users started complaining against Apple as they wanted to blaim the company to punishing them for having jailbroken their iPhone According to AppleInsider, the jailbreak is directly responsible of this issue with the push function and due to the modification of the unique identification file of the iPhone. So all iPhone jailbroken with the same tools are missing one ID element used by Apple to identify the iPhone to ensure that the message and/or notifications are being sent to the right unit.

Hackers scoffing at iPhone 3GS' hardware encryption
There were other features taking higher billing in the iPhone 3GS' announcement than its hardware-level encryption -- hell, even the magnetic compass was getting more play -- but it's there, and Apple's actively marketing the bit-scrambling capability to enterprise clients. Problem is, hackers are apparently having a field day with it, rendering it useless in all but name. Intel Appeals on the European Commission Fine of 1.4 Billion USD
Without much surprise, Intel decided to appeal on the recent decision from the European Commission to fine 1.4 billion USD for abuse of a dominant position and anti-trust violation for computer CPUs over the past decades. So the legal action will still last for couple additional months. This is a expected move, but so far no company won against the EC in such legal battle. AT&T Activated 2.4 millions iPhones for Q2 2009
AT&T announced to have activated 2.4 million iPhone units for the last quarter (Q@ 2009). This is a new record for both Apple and AT&T. Does Apple Really Hold 91% of Market shares for 1,000 USD+ Computers?
According to NPD, Apple broke a new record last June in USA by capturing 91% of market shares for &,000 + computers segment. Despite the fact that it is 3% more than in May, those figures are puzzling and might push competitors to think twice or start dissecting what is being those numbers.
As mentioned by some analysts, those figures would indicate that recent advertising campaigns from did not really target customers as expected or claimed. It could also define Windows as the OS of cheap and dirty computers? This is for sure not entirely true as some cheap netbook are not powerful enough to run Vista, or even XP.
We also think that those figures might have been slightly biased or not really representing the reality. A percentage is always impressive, but one should also provide the number of units sold in the defined segment to provide a better perspective. Oh no they didn't! Palm re-enables iTunes synching
Well, you have to give them credit for having some cojones. Palm today announced that, a week after Apple cut off 3rd party access to the iTunes store, the Pre can now, again, sync with the software. Humorously, they call the fix "Resolves an issue" like Apple wasn't actively trying to block the Pre from using iTunes. The ball is now in Apple's court.
A third party, the EFF, has been rattling its saber about this issue as well.

Google Latitude now for iPhone (webapp)
You can now use Google Latitude on your iPhone, though it is just a webapp. Interesting information form Google on why they didn't build a "traditional" app:

Flash to support GPS, Accelerometer, Multitouch..."up to Apple" to support iPhone
Ted Patrick, Adobe's Senior Manager of Developer Communities has said that he expect to see Flash support the major capabilites (GPS, Accelerometrs, Multitouch) of modern mobile devices. The comments were made today at an event for analysts. Adobe's CTO, Kevin Rollins added that a full featured version of Flash for mobile phones will be available in beta by the end of this year and by early next year.

E-cigarettes contain carcinogens and toxins after all, FDA warns
In case you ever of the mindset that e-cigarettes were somehow toxin free, at least compared to the more traditional smokes, along comes the FDA to shatter your illusions. A report this week from the government agency calls out the product with a safety warning, charging that the cartridges they examined contained "carcinogens and toxic chemicals such as diethylene glycol, an ingredient used in antifreeze." Microsoft sees first annual sales decline in its history for fiscal 2009
Microsoft's fiscal year 2009 just came to a close, and the new milestones for the company aren't too boast worthy. Year-over-year, the company saw a 3.2 percent decline in sales, its first drop in the company's history -- guess that third quarter report was a pretty good indication of things to come. Net profit, too, fell 17 percent to $14.57 billion. Looking at just the fourth quarter, sales fell 17 percent to $13.1 billion, and profits saw a pretty massive 29 percent drop, to $3.05 billion.
