British border guards recruit robots to root out stowaways

Super Talent makes MasterDrive MX SSDs slightly faster

With the prices of SSDs sinking daily, Super Talent is hoping to grab a few eyes by offering faster drives at comparably low price points. According to a data sheet posted up on the firm's website, its MasterDrive MX line of SSDs now features a maximum read rate of 120MB/sec, while write speeds range between 60MB/sec (15GB and 30GB) and 80MB/sec (60GB and 120GB). Beim iTunes Music Store galt und gilt es für gekaufte Musik: Alle von euch erworbenen Songs lassen sich auf fünf dafür autorisierten Rechnern abspielen. Hattet ihr euch gerade zehn Euro für das neue Madonna-Album abbuchen lassen, so konnte die Musik mit zur Arbeit genommen, der dortige Rechner autorisiert und mit eurem Nutzer-Konto verbunden werden. Bis zu fünf Kollegen konnten so ihre neuen Tracks mit auf Arbeit bringen und diese zusammen in einer iTunes-Bibliothek verwalten.

Sennheiser bringt mit dem MM 50 ein iPhone-Headset auf Basis der bekannten CX 300 Ohrhörer. Texas Instruments meldet Umsatz- und Gewinnrückgang
Texas Instruments hat im zweiten Quartal 2008 bei Umsatz und Gewinn ein schlechteres Ergebnis erzielt als im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres. Der Umsatz sank um zwei Prozent auf 3,35 Milliarden Dollar. Beim Gewinn verlor das Unternehmen sogar vier Prozent und erreichte nur 588 Millionen Dollar. Der Gewinn pro Aktie stieg jedoch um 5 Prozent von 42 auf 44 US-Cent.

MLCs erlauben die Fertigung von Flash-Festplatten mit höheren Speicherkapazitäten, stellen aber auch höhere Anforderungen an den Controller einer SSD. Um Controller zu entwickeln, die auch unter Vista funktionieren, werde sich die Einführung von MLC-basierten Flash-Festplatten bis Anfang nächsten Jahres verzögern, so Sandisk.

Altes Dock für iPhone 3G umfunktionieren
Ärgerlich, wenn das alte Zubehör mit dem Umstieg auf das iPhone 3G aussortiert werden muss. Schlimm genug, dass Taschen und Hüllen des alten iPhones nicht mehr passen, wenigstens beim Dock kann Abhilfe geschaffen werden: Zwei recht unerschrockenen Nutzer gingen mit grobem Werkzeug auf das Plastik-Accessoire los und gaben ihm wortwörtlich den letzten Schliff. Das Ergebnis: Das alte Dock funktioniert auch für das iPhone 3G.

Virginia Tech assembles Top100 Mac supercomputer cluster
Buried beneath the hype surrounding iPhone and Apple's growing Mac market share, the company still offers server-grade solutions that are making some dent in the high-end research markets - and now one of the company's early champions is adding another Apple server farm to the collection.
Virginia Tech has deployed a new 29-teraflop Mac supercomputing cluster that's based on 324 Mac Pros, it has been revealed. The cluster is at the Center for High-End Computing Systems (CHECS) within the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The system would have been ranked in the Top 100 systems of the June 2008 Top500 list of supercomputers.
Ensuring the Macs are all talking to each other, Mellanox Technologies' 40Gb/s InfiniBand technology has been deployed to interconnect the machines.

Apple hat bei der gestrigen Bekanntgabe der Quartalszahlen verlauten lassen, dass man das iPhone ab dem 22. August in zwanzig weiteren Ländern auf den Markt bringen will. Diese Ankündigung erscheint allerdings etwas merkwürdig (oder auch nicht) vor dem Hintergrund der iPhone-Knappheit auf dem bisherigen Markt. Auf diesbezügliche Fragen der Analysten antwortete Tim Cook, dass die Knapheit allein auf die "überwältigende Nachfrage" zurückzuführen sei. Man sei aber sehr sicher, die Produktion ankurbeln und das iPhone termingerecht im August in weiteren Ländern einführen zu können.

Intel hat die Preise etlicher CPUs gesenkt. Im Desktop-Segment werden insgesamt vier Prozessoren billiger. Die größte Preissenkung erfährt der Core 2 Duo E8500 (3,16 GHz), der nun 31 Prozent billiger ist und 183 Dollar kostet. Der mit 2,53 GHz getaktete Core 2 Duo E7200 ist ab sofort für 113 Dollar zu haben, der E8400 (3 GHz) für 163 Dollar, was einer Reduzierung von 15 respektive 11 Prozent entspricht.

AMD trennt sich von der Handheld- und TV-Sparte

Earlier today we were reporting about the secret project Steve was mentioning during the conference call yesterday, clearly stating that this/those device(s) will mark a difference with competitors. Something similar to what was experienced 25 years ago when Apple introduced the Macintosh?
Over the last decades, the graphical user interface is most likely the part that did not really evolve in its concept, based on a keyboard but most importantly on the mouse. If the esthetical rendering today in OS X Leopard has nothing to do with the first version of Mac OS, we still click on icons with a mouse, we drag and drop elements from one location to another. The interface man/machine did not change much in its concept.

Apple Reports Record Third Quarter Results, As Usual?
It might look like as the usual game, and become expect by investors and analysts, but once again Apple posted record quarter results. If the figures look impressive, the way it is distributed over Mac, iPod, iPhone and software is interesting. First, Apple posted revenue of 7.46 billion USD and net quarterly profit of 1.07 billion USD, while the gross margin was 34.8 %, down from 36.9 % in the year-ago quarter.
However, Apple still heavily depends on the local US market, as International sales accounted only for 42 percent of the quarters revenue, but this might evolve in the future. Other figures:
- 2,496,000 Mac units shipped during the quarter, representing 41 % unit growth and 43 % revenue growth over the year-ago quarter.
- 11,011,000 (binary code?) iPods shipped during the quarter, representing 12 % unit growth and 7 % revenue growth over the year-ago quarter.
- 717,000 iPhone units old during the quarter, compared to 270,000 in the year-ago-quarter.

Gartner analyst says the mouse will be on the outs within five years

Still, that's the limb Gartner analyst Steve Prentice has walked out on, sort of.
