Duct tape server II gets proudly introduced

Don't deny it -- you totally blew the original Duct Tape Server off as some one-off project created after a hard night of truth or dare, but the DTS team is out to prove that this here is no fad. Just this week the DTS II (that's Duct Tape Server II for those who prefer things broken down) was introduced shortly after DTS I came unglued. Reportedly, this unit will be on server row at MillionManLan and will pack a 2.2GHz Pentium 4, 1GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive and a few fans to keep things breezy. 3D mammograms increase breast cancer detection by 23 percent

Scientists have developed stereo mammograms -- breast X-rays taken with special cameras and at multiple angles -- that they say can help them increase detection of breast cancer by 23-percent while decreasing false alarms by 46-percent. By overlaying images taken at different angles or using 3D glasses, Researchers at the Mayo clining say they can now see behind dense tissue that would normally block potential problem areas. iPhone 3G verspätet sich in Belgien
Gespannt warten viele Länder auf die Einführung des iPhone 3G. Einige werden in den Genuss kommen, dass Gerät pünktlich am 11. Juli erwerben zu können, andere müssen sich noch etwas gedulden. Auch in Belgien wird das Mobiltelefon von Apple wohl später verfügbar sein, gab Provider Mobistar bekannt.

MobileMe: me.com-Adressen funktionieren
Apples neuer Onlinedienst wirft seine Schatten voraus. Nachdem übereifrige Apple-Mitarbeiter angeblich bereits erste MobileMe-Softwarepäckchen verschickt haben, sind seit heute scheinbar auch alle 'alten' .mac-E-Mail-Adressen unter der neuen Domain erreichbar - letzte Woche kamen bereits einzelne Erfolgsberichte aus den USA. Mehrere Testmails an uns bekannte .Mac-Benutzernamen @ me.com kamen anstandslos an.

EU-Kommission: SMS-Preise von 5 Cent interessant
EU-Kommissarin Viviane Reding finde den Vorschlag, die SMS-Preise im EU-Ausland per Verordnung auf 5 Cent zu drücken, interessant. "Die SMS-Roaming-Preise sind seit Januar gerade einmal von 29 auf 28 Eurocent gesunken", sagte Reding. Dies sei ein "Armutszeugnis für die Selbstregulierungskräfte der Branche." (Entscheider, Studie)

Die Vorstellung des MacBook Air und dem passenden Werbespot ist zwar schon etwas her, Parodien des Films sind aber immer noch gerne gesehen. Researchers boast of progress with printed electronics

There's certainly no shortage of researchers working on printable electronics these days, but a group from the EU-funded CONTACT project is now boasting of a "major step" towards being able to print electronics on everyday materials. At the moment, they seem to be focused primarily on printing organic TFT displays directly onto glass plates, which apparently required the use of some aggressive solvents that "attack" the organic materials between the TFT and liquid crystal layers. Fujitsu Siemens Computers beklagt Preisverfall bei Notebooks

Axel Springer AG favorisiert Macs & iPhone
Die Axel Springer AG stellt konzernweit alle Rechnerarbeitsplätze auf Apple um. In einer Pressemitteilung gab das Unternehmen bekannt, dass neben Mac mini, iMac, Mac Pro, MacBook, MacBook Pro und MacBook Air auch das iPhone als mobiles Gerät zur Verfügung stehen wird. Axel Springer ist damit nach Google der weltweit zweitgrößte Firmenkunde für Apple, der Vorstandsvorsitzende Matthias Döpfner sprach in einer Videobotschaft ab die Mitarbeiter auch von einem kulturellen Wandel des Unternehmens.

Polymorph robot mimics human joints and muscles, puts curtain rings to good use

Using polymorph plastic, some curtain rods, electric screwdrivers, motors, and a whole lot of mad-scientist creativity, an Xrobots hobbyist created this organic-looking robot base. By using wooden sockets and curtain rings as hip joints, the designer is clearly going for a human-like creature of doom here. Hitachi will bring out 5 TB disks by 2010
Source : Electronista Hitachi announces that by 2010 its hard drives will reach the density of 1 terabit per inch, and will offer 3.5" products of 5 TB.
To illustrate these remarks, Hitachi announces that a computer equipped with 2 of these disks would have the same memory size as a human brain, a thing impossible to check.
More than ever, one should wonder what use could be made such products, at least for the general public and the vast majority of the professionals.

A big edititing group changes to the Mac
Source : Heise.deIf Apple needed a very strong sign to show the world that Mac has returned to business use, it has just been offered to them by Axel Springer DG of one of the largest editors of the European press, based in Germany.
The group announced that it was going to acquire Macs to replace its of its PCs used by its 10.000 employees. The reasons given by their DG in a Youtube video must give to pleasure the people running Apple:
- the Mac is simpler to use
- the Mac is more elegant
- the Mac is less expensive to buy and especially to maintain.
The changeover should be done gradually over 5 years.
Of course, it is also a large defeat for Windows Vista, the transition towards this latest version is not simpler than a complete change of computing environment.

It's not too often case mods cross over into the world of body mods, but when you kind of think about it, it was only a matter of time before people started using laser-etchers to give themselves immaculately detailed burn "tattoos." It's unclear what kind of lasting effects using an Epilog on your own skin will have, but don't be too stunned if it just peels right off and eventually becomes some weird, blurry scar. In other words, attempt this feat at your own risk. Oh, and you didn't think we would let this one off without a video, did you? Scientists train robots to love punk music
