Multi-robot command center built around Microsoft Surface (video)
While we've given up on ever winning an online match of StarCraft II, that doesn't mean top-down unit control schemes are only for nerds in their mom's basement with their cheap rush tactics and Cheeto fingers and obscene triple digit APMs (we're not bitter or anything). In fact, we kind of like the look of this robot control interface, developed at UMass Lowell by Mark Micire as part of his PhD research. The multitouch UI puts Microsoft Surface to good use, with gestures and contextual commands that make operating an unruly group of robots look easy, and a console-inspired touch control setup for operating a single bot from a first person perspective as well. iPads finally shipping within 24 hours
Apple on Saturday quietly shortened the shipping times for new iPads on the Apple Store to 24 hours. Every model now ships within a day after it was ordered and follows just a few days after ship times shrank to a few days earlier the same week. It's unclear if Apple retail stock has caught up, but other international stores also show the reduced lead time.

Toshiba Android tablet gets hard specs, Apple-style dock
Toshiba's Android tablet has been given a more definitive name and specs in a scoop that points to an Apple influence. Now labeled by Notebook Italia as the Folio 100, the device not only has a proprietary Apple-style dock connector but a similar cradle to match. Toshiba will also try ot take a cue by running its own store, Toshiba Marketplace, as a supplement to Android Market.

Apple's App Store cracks 250,000 apps
Apple has quietly passed the 250,000 app mark at the App Store, new data shows. As of Saturday morning, 148Apps recorded 252,227 readily available iPad and iPhone apps. The figure is a quick climb from 225,000 in June and is likely to be held up as a milestone by Apple at its September 1 music event.

Do you love or hate Safari 5's 'smarter' address bar?
I'll state for the record that the new address bar functionality in Safari 5 is the most un-Apple interaction I've seen come out of Cupertino in a long time. Perhaps adding RAM to my 8500 was more painful, but when a company known for ease-of-use screws up something so basic, it makes you wonder, "who thought this was a good idea?" But Safari 5 is "smart." As in, "I'm smarter than you, nya nya, and you'll go to the sites I say, not what you want!" It goes beyond preferring your history to primary domains. DIY: 3-Meter Gundam besteht aus Modellbauresten

Wer schonmal Plastikmodelle gebastelt hat, kennt die Reste, die dabei übrigbleiben: unförmige Plastikrahmen, die man eigentlich nur wegschmeissen kann. Geht natürlich auch anders: ein paar Gundam-Fans haben eine drei Meter große Gundam-Statue aus genau diesem Zeug gebaut, wobei die Reste auch noch ausschliesslich von Gundam-Bausätzen stammen. 250 Stunden Arbeit hat der Reste-Gundam verschlungen, aber das Ergebnis kann sich durchaus sehen lassen.

StreamTV Elocity A7 tablet packs Tegra 2 and Android 2.2, coming to Amazon for $399 in September
We can't say we'd ever heard of StreamTV, but all the company had to say was "Tegra 2 Android Froyo tablet" to get us to meet up with them in NYC earlier today. The Philadelphia start-up is planning to bring its Elocity A7 -- essentially a re-badged Compal's NAZ-10 -- to an Amazon order page near you, and from what we saw during the hour-long demo it may just be a contender for your stashed away $399. Apple says goodbye to design firm that helped develop some Apple products
The New York Times reports that Apple and SurfaceInk have parted ways after the small Silicon Valley developer showed off a tablet design to some potential clients. Apple obviously didn't like one of its partners demonstrating a product that could become a competitive threat, so out the door they went.
The Times quotes founder and Chief Executive Eric Bauswell as saying that SurfaceInk and Apple had "gone separate directions."
SurfaceInk was founded in 1999, and has worked for Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Palm.

1&1 verabschiedet sich schon wieder vom Smartpad

United Internet will im September die letzten Smartpads ausliefern, obwohl dieses erst Ende Juni vorgestellt wurde. Das kündigte 1&1-Gründer Ralph Dommermuth auf der Bilanzpressekonferenz des Unternehmens an. Grund ist wohl, dass das Smartpad mit dem durch das iPad ausgelösten Tablet-Rummel nicht mitkommt. United Internet hatte vor einem Jahr nur 25.000 Stück bestellt, und Dommermuth erklärte nun: "Es macht keinen Sinn auf Eigenentwicklungen zu setzen, wenn es schon viele Produkte dieser Art am Markt gibt". Wii Balance Board-controlled robot a hit with toddlers in Ithaca (video)
How could we resist a story involving robot-powered babies? The Ithaca College Tots on Bots project aims to mobilize infants with physical disabilities by setting them atop a "mobile robot" equipped with a Wii Balance Board to let the young operator steer by leaning -- which, it turns out, works pretty well. Additionally, the vehicle uses sonar to avoid nasty crashes and a remote control that an adult can use to take control. Further study has to be made before any long term developmental benefits can be ascertained, but in the meantime it does look like a lot of fun. See it in action after

EU-Kommission bestellt SWIFT-Aufseher

If you're like us, you're constantly on the hunt for the perfect small computer. Now, we're not saying we've found it in this new set of Zotac Zboxes but we do like where they're coming from. The minimal slivers pack Ion chipsets along with Intel CULV CPUs, making for a power-sipping experience that can actually push a couple of pixels (a couple, not many more). Rumors: iTunes at 99c per series per month, 3G iPod touch
Apple's proposed iTunes TV rentals could be cheaper still than originally thought if an unverified but notable rumor is true. Rather than charge 99 cents per episode, Cult of Mac claimed late Thursday that it would cost that amount per TV series per month. Under the model, a customer could watch every episode of four shows for $4 each month, or well under the $32 it would cost to buy the same content.

Ricoh outs rather rugged, water-resistant G700 point and shoot
Ricoh's released a new point and shoot, the G700. This little camera's water and dust resistant, it will supposedly withstand a drop of up to 2 meters, and its resistant to chemicals such as ethanol and hypochlorous acid, so shooting pics of the chemically-driven, zombie-infested apocalypse shouldn't be much of a challenge. Other than that, you've got a 12.1 megapixel sensor, a 5x optical wide-angle zoom lens, a 3-inch color LCD, and password protection. You know, so the zombies can check out your shots! iPhone 4 available in Mexico
South of the border, down Mexico way, that's where you can now purchase an iPhone 4 from Mexico's Apple Store online. Oh, and just to make the North American AT&T customers envious, the phone is unlocked. You know, just like in Canada.
iPhone 4 is available via Telcel and Movistar, but I was unable to find pricing on Apple's site, and both sellers were not forthcoming. Apple has not responded to a request for the price (if you know, please tell us in the comments). Still, the iPhone 3GS is now available for 8,199 pesos (which turns out to be around $650), so expect iPhone 4 to cost a bit more than that.TU

HP bringing dual-core Atom N550 to Mini 5103, other netbooks expected to follow
HP only just rolled out its Mini 5103 business netbook earlier this month, but it looks like it might already be set to get an upgrade -- a newly-discovered support document on HP's own site clearly lists the new dual-core Atom N550 processor alongside the current Atom N455 and N475 options. No indication of any other changes beyond that, but this should only just be the beginning of broader rollout for the dual-core CPU -- CNET says it expects a full refresh to hit HP's consumer netbooks

Overclocked, liquid-cooled Mac Pro trades noise for speed
I wonder if it's only a matter of time before Apple decides to go to a liquid-cooled solution rather than keeping with bigger and faster fans. In any case, one technically adept person over at Asetek didn't want to wait for that day. He went about not only water cooling an older 8-core Mac Pro, but overclocked it as well. The result was a much quieter system, with the same speed as a newer Mac Pro and at lower cost.
I haven't noticed a Mac Pro to be all that noisy, but the quieter the system the better, especially when it's on or under your desk. What this guy didn't explain, though, was how much time and money it cost to outfit th

Apple MacBook sleep indictor set to human breathing rhythm
In a nod to Apple's attention to detail and human engineering, Flood Light describes how Apple got its sleep status indicator right, while Dell got it wrong. A July 2002 patent for a Breathing Status LED Indicator describes how the blink rate of a sleep status LED would be timed to a slow breathing rhythm. The blink rate of current Mac notebooks falls within the average respiratory rate of an adult -- between 12-20 breaths per minute. For example, the blink rate of the MacBook Pro 15in late 2008 is exactly 12 cycles per minute.

Paid apps dominate App Store, opposite true for Android
The Android Market appears to be continuing on a trend toward free apps, while the opposite scenario holds true on the iOS App Store. The latest numbers gathered by AndroLib and 148Apps.biz suggest the Android portal is dominated by free titles, which account for 64 percent of all content. In contrast, 70 percent of App Store listings require users to pay.

New ARM architecture (likely Eagle) better suited for OS virtualization

Kodak adds higher-end AIO inkjet with Wi-Fi
Kodak in an unusual Friday launch brought out the ESP 9250 as its new flagship inkjet all-in-one. The printer carries 802.11n Wi-Fi for local network printer sharing, including through iOS devices, and optionally takes a Bluetooth adapter. It prints in color at 9,600DPI, with duplexing an option, and scans at a true 2,400DPI.

Nano tech display would be 8X denser than iPhone 4's
A team of engineers at the University of Michigan has created an ultra high-definition display that can display a logo of the school that is just nine microns tall. In comparison, the pixels on the iPhone 4's 3.5-inch, 960x640 resolution display are eight times larger. It was made possible by Jay Guo, an associate professor in U of M's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, who developed a new color filter made of nano-level sheets of metal with precisely spaced gratings.

FTC makes ruling in iTunes review case
The Federal Trade Commission, of all things, has laid down a ruling in the strange case of Reverb Communications' iTunes reviews. We didn't get to this story the first time around, but a PR firm named Reverb Communications (disclaimer: I've attended their press events here in LA) was accused a while back of asking its staff to leave positive iTunes reviews on some of their clients' App Store titles. This wasn't just a request to have the staff try out and review client games -- they had an "internal user reviews" process, in which employees of the firm were paid specifically to leave positive reviews -- "not over the top" were their words -- on iTunes and online message boards.
