Worms für iPhone im Preis reduziert
Am 26. August wird es nach einigen Jahren der Abstinenz mit “Worms Reloaded” wieder ein Worms-Spiel für den PC geben. Um die Veröffentlichung gebührend anzupreisen, hat man nun das iPhone-Version im Preis reduziert.

iPad management tools include camera reference
A reference in documents for the iPad's enterprise management tools may back the presence of a camera in next-generation hardware, according to AppleInsider. In configuring an iPad, IT departments can choose to restrict a number of freedoms, such as Safari or iTunes access, or the amount of times a login can be tried before a unit wipes clean. Mentioned as one option in a PDF file is the ability to restrict camera use, even though that technology is currently missing.

Amazon: Apple's claim of 20% e-book share is suspicious
Amazon today in a talk provided some rare added insight into the Kindle by disputing Apple's market share claims. The store's VP of Digital Ian Freed believes assertions the iBookstore has 22 percent share are false as Amazon has too large a share, at 70 to 80 percent, for Apple to take the rest. With a field that also includes Barnes & Noble's Nook, the iBookstore's actual share is likely smaller, Freed said.

Power Support Crystal Film for iPhone 4 now shipping
Filed under: iPhoneMost (probably all) of you who are or will soon be slapping a case on your iPhone 4 won't have a case that protects the screen from scratches. Well, except those of you with flip-top cases that cover the entire unit. When I received my iPhone 4, I wanted to immediately protect the screen, but the only thing available at the time was sticky films that are either permanently affixed to your screen with adhesive, or require a lot of post-clean-up when you decide to remove or replace it.

AT&T blocking Dell Streak beta units?
There's a fascinating discussion going on over in MoDaCo's forums today suggesting that Dell Streak units that were given out recently as part of the company's US beta test in and around Austin, Texas are no longer functioning on AT&T, the result of an apparent IMEI block; voice calls placed from the devices all get re-routed to AT&T customer service, and 2G / 3G data doesn't work at all. Our understanding is that beta testers were allowed to keep their units after the conclusion of the test period -- some of those ended up on eBay, naturally, so you can imagine that buyers are probably feeling a little steamed by this. Samsung preps first real Android alternative to iPod touch
Samsung is near releasing what should be the first true competitor to the iPod touch to use Android. Listed at South Korea's Daum store, the YP-MB2 would have the same features as the Galaxy S but targeted at MP3 players. The player would center on the same large, outdoor-friendly four-inch Super AMOLED screen and 1GHz processor but would depend on Wi-Fi alone to get online.

News: iPhone 4 jailbreak hack enables FaceTime over 3G
A newly-released hack for jailbroken iPhone 4 units allows for FaceTime calling over 3G networks. The hack, called My3G, has also allowed for a measurement of how much data FaceTime calls use. To celebrate its third anniversary, Readdle has announced a special discount on all of its products. The sale, which technically began August 1st, is set to last for 48 hours in total and reduces the price of every Readdle app, including ReaddleDocs and Calendars, to $1. iPad data cost by country analyzed and charted
Sure, you may already have a general idea of how countries stack up when it comes to iPad data costs, but sometimes there's nothing like a good chart to drive a point home. Thankfully, the folks at Tableau have done just that and, while there may not be a lot of surprises, the differences in cost are certainly striking. Apple quietly slips into number three spot in global portable market
Filed under: iPadWho would have thought that headline would ever appear? Well it has, and if you count the iPad Apple has just passed Asus, Toshiba, Dell and Lenovo and is now the number three producer of portables.

NEC intros 23-inch, LED-lit MultiSync E231W display
NEC has unveiled a new mid-range display aimed at pros, the 23-inch MultiSync E231W. It's said to be up to 40 percent more efficient than CCFL backlit monitors as it uses LED backlighting. It outputs at a native 1080p and the display has a 25,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio.

My3G update enables FaceTime calls over 3G
iPhone 4 owners should now be able to make FaceTime calls over 3G as a result of two recent software updates. The first is a fix to JailbreakMe, properly enabling FaceTime on jailbroken devices. An unauthorized app, My3G, has at the same time been updated with FaceTime support. The software fools iOS into treating a 3G connection as Wi-Fi, undoing artificial limits in some apps.

BlackBerry users running out of loyalty: 50 percent plan to defect to iPhone or Android
Nielson has its own angle on the smartphone numbers game out today, and the results vaguely resemble the numbers from Canalys. Connecticut investigating Amazon, Apple e-book deals
Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal on Monday launched an investigation into the legality of e-book deals reached by Amazon and Apple. The state is concerned that the no better price deals at the Kindle store and iBookstore may be anti-competitive as they prevent any other Internet bookseller from offering a better price. Tweaks to Dev Team jailbreak fix FaceTime, MMS
First made available over the weekend, the iPhone Dev Team's JailbreakMe site has already been updated to solve several problems. Hackers should now be able to properly use FaceTime on a jailbroken iPhone 4, along with MMS messaging. iPad owners should finally be able to jailbreak iOS 3.2.1, though some problems are said to exist with 3G iPads. Rumor: Update on white iPhone manufacturing
Filed under: iPhoneWebsite WhiteiPhone4Now, which happens to sell DIY white iPhone case kits, has posted pictures supposedly showing the front of a white iPhone.
The focus of the change depicted in their photos seems to be what they're calling a "rough & bent" condition resulting from the manufacturing process. It appears that the top case is rendered less-than-perfect in manufacturing, and as a result doesn't sit completely flush when the phone is assembled. They also claim, according to their "OEM sources," that the process has been adjusted to successfully remove this imperfection.

PlayOn web app to support Hulu, Netflix, other streams
Having yet to receive Apple's approval for a native app, media streaming service PlayOn is tomorrow launching a dedicated iPhone web app. Via HTML5, people will be able to stream content from Hulu, Netflix, Comedy Central and other services. Some restrictions exist; the PlayOn streaming client works only on Windows, for example, and can only broadcast over a local network. The iPad is not yet supported.

iPhone 4 jailbreak enables FaceTime video calling over 3G
We'd actually already hacked up a 3G FaceTime video call using an iPhone 4 and a MiFi, but now that Apple's latest handset has been jailbroken, you can toss the extra hardware -- you just need a little Cydia app called My3G, which lets you run WiFi apps over 3G. FaceTime video quality appears to be unaffected, but from what we've seen the framerates suffer depending on your connection -- pretty much what you'd expect to get when running a video stream optimized for high-bandwidth connections on a smaller pipe. Still, it's instantly the best reason to jailbreak your phone -- check a video after the break.

DARPA entwickelt mit NIST Echtzeitübersetzung via Nexus One
Die DARPA erforscht schon seit längerem die Möglichkeiten von Echtzeit-Übersetzungssystemen. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) entwickelten sie das TRANSTAC-Projekt, das unter anderem in der Lage ist, via Nexus One zwischen Englisch und Afghanisch (Pashto) hin und her zu übersetzen. Das soll vor allem im Afghanistan-Krieg Hilfe versprechen. Wenn auch die Macher selber noch sagen, dass es vom Universalübersetzer aus Star Trek ein Stück weit entfernt ist. Motorola says original Droid 'doesn't have the hardware' to support a mobile hotspot
This is the week that the original Droid will be getting the Android 2.2 update, but it looks like that update won't be bringing two of the most oft-requested features: tethering and a mobile hotspot. Why's that? While tethering seems to be simply due to a lack of an app that "isn't part of this update," the mobile hotspot issue is a bit more curious -- Motorola spokesperson Brenda Raney says that the Droid "doesn't have [the] hardware to support a mobile hotspot." PC builders not keen on making Atom-based tablets
An apparent scoop from the PC industry hints that most computer builders are actively avoiding pushes by Intel to develop tablets based on Atom chips. Intel's Oak Trail should improve performance and battery life, but most are focusing on the better battery life and touchscreen UI of ARM processors and the Android OS. Those who do make Atom tablets only plan to ship small amounts to placate Intel and Microsoft and prevent either from retaliating by cutting off supply.

iPad ads more lucrative than iPhone spots, study claims
The iPad may well be more profitable to developers than the iPhone, at least in terms of advertising, according to mobile ad network Mobclix. The company has released new statistics for month of July, in which it points out that the ECPM (effective cost per thousand impressions) rating of iPad apps is approximately five times higher than for the iPhone. This is offset by the comparatively smaller market represented by the iPad so far, since there are under 4 million tablets sold worldwide.

Sprint, Clear expand 4G in California, Delaware, Florida
Wireless provider Sprint and its 4G partner Clear on Monday said they have expanded the network coverage of their WiMAX network to some cities in California, Delaware, Florida and Michigan. The service launches today in Modesto and Stockton in California; Jacksonville in Florida; Wilmington, Delaware; and Grand Rapids, Michigan. Canalys: Android takes Q2 smartphone market share lead in US with 886 percent year-over-year growth
We knew Android phones were selling like gangbusters -- Google has been none too shy in telling us as much -- but numbers were slightly less clear in a larger context. Well, if a new report by Canalys is to be believed, those numbers are just fine in a larger context. Windows Phone 7 to reach US by November, Europe first
Microsoft chief operating officer Kevin Turner is now known to have revealed during the annual Financial Analyst Meeting that Windows Phone 7 will reach the US only in November. Contrary to the company's typical US-focused approach, the first WP7 devices will go to Europe first, in October, and will only reach the US afterwards. The executive didn't justify the timing, but most of Microsoft's launch partners have traditionally launched many smartphones in Europe first.

Zwei arabische Staaten verhängen Sperre gegen RIMs Blackberry-Dienste

Android may now be largest smartphone platform in US
Android has overtaken BlackBerry and iPhone sales to hold the largest share of the smartphone market in the US, Canalys argued today. Collectively, the sales from HTC, Motorola and smaller Android producers amounted to 34 percent of American smartphones in the spring, or just enough to edge out RIM's 32.1 percent and Apple's 21.7 percent. HTC's Droid Incredible, Evo 4G and other devices accounted for the largest slice at 14.4 percent, with Motorola, LG and others taking smaller pieces.

OWC outs upgrade program for 27-inch iMacs

Apple Store-Eröffnung in Philadelphia zeigt: Mitarbeiter sind Indianer
Was ist mehrere hundert Meter lang, hat ganz, ganz viele Beine und nicht den blassesten Schimmer, was es hier gerade tut? Korrekt, die Schlange, die darauf wartet in den nagelneuen Apple Store in Philadelphia gelassen zu werden. Da kann man schon mal Plumpssack um den Block spielen. Interessant auch der Habitus der Store-Mitarbeiter, die sich in ihrer Kommunikationsform anscheinend auf die Ureinwohner des nordamerikanischen Kontinents beziehen und in Gegenschlangen ausschwärmen, um die Wartenden abzuchucken. Filed under: iPadThere's a short post over at the Business Insider about the author's view of the success of the iPad, based on how interested (e.g., addicted) his kids are in the device. It got me thinking -- is the fact that kids love the iPad a good measure of its success? Well, yes and no.
In my gaming experience, technology of this kind can get outdated pretty quickly if something new comes to market. The minute something new and more interesting hits the stores -- and kids are speaking of the wonder of these new devices to their friends -- the older devices are suddenly not so hip and cool anymore.

Third-gen Amazon Kindle sold out until September 4
Amazon has already sold out of the first batch of the third-generation Kindle. Despite being on sale for just five days since the unveiling, both the 3G and Wi-Fi versions are listed as "temporarily sold out" and could ship as late as September 4 for new orders. The larger DX remains in stock.

Waschmittelhersteller versteckt in Brasilien GPS-Tracker in der Verpackung (PR-Fail)
Was waren das noch Zeiten als es bei uns auch noch OMO gab. In Brasilien gibt es das Waschpulver der Firma Unilever noch immer und nun wird das Land von einer zwefelhaften Promoaktion überrascht. In 50 Verpackungen wurden, zwecks eines Gewinnspiels, GPS-Tracking-Geräte versteckt. Das nennen wir erstmal zeitgemäß. Aber eigentlich geht es nur um 50 Videokameras, die dann an der Haustür der Gewinner verschenkt werden sollen. Das ist natürlich ein Überraschungseffekt wie er nur in Filmdrehbüchern stehen kann. Auch soll die Waschmittelbox irgendwann anfangen zu piepsen, was Mutter auch eher mit Erschrecken feststellen dürfte. Kundennähe stellen wir uns anders vor. SAP bringt Feature Pack 2.5 für Business ByDesign
Zwei Tage nach dem Verkaufsstart seiner On-Demand-Lösung hat SAP heute die allgemeine Verfügbarkeit des Feature Pack 2.5 bekannt gegeben. Neu sind darin unter anderem Analysen in Echtzeit, die Unterstützung mobiler Endgeräte und ein personalisierbares Interface. Umweltschutz: Schelte für PCs, Lob für Apple
Vor vier Jahren forderte die Umweltschutzorganisation Greenpeace Öko-Maßnahmen von den Computerherstellern: Polyvinylchlorid (PVC) und bromhaltige Flammschutzmittel (Brominated Flame Retardants, BFR) sollten nicht mehr verwendet werden – alle Hersteller versprachen, die Probleme zu beheben. Britisches Militär trainiert mit iPads

Hacker demonstriert einfaches GSM-Sniffing
Auf der Defcon hat Sicherheitsspezialist Chris Paget eine einfache Möglichkeit vorgestellt, mit der sich das GSM-Mobilfunknetz belauschen lässt. Weltweiter Handymarkt wächst 13 Prozent im zweiten Quartal
Laut einer Untersuchung von Strategy Analytics wurden im zweiten Quartal weltweit 308 Millionen Mobiltelefone verkauft. Im Vorjahreszeitraum waren es noch 273 Millionen Handys gewesen. Stab-proof Gorilla Glass coming to TVs near you in 2011
If you go to Corning Inc's website, you'll see the company advertises its seemingly indestructible Gorilla Glass as being available for LCD TV sets, but to this point, no major manufacturer has taken up this tempting offer. That's all about to change, apparently, as Corning has recently announced plans to massively expand its production capacity (see press release after the break) and is now predicting it'll secure its first deal this fall. iPhone Dev-Team puts out remote iPhone 4 jailbreak
The unofficial iPhone Dev-Team today sent word that it had published its first widely available jailbreak tool for the iPhone 4. JailbreakMe uses an exploit in Safari to derestrict the phone over the web. Like earlier jailbreaks, it voids the phone's warranty as long as it's installed but also allows running unsigned apps and others features that Apple chooses not to allow in normal use.

iPhone devteam releases browser-based 4.x jailbreak

Last we checked, the just-announced browser-based jailbreak (a return of jailbreakme.com) was so swamped that the server stopped responding.
